RE: CSU

2000-12-24 Thread Bowen, Shawn

CSU is a channel service unit. A CSU/DSU is similar to a modem in that it
converts analog signals to digital, as well as providing a mechanism for
breaking down individual DS0's in a DS1 so that they can be bundled or muxed
out. This would be the piece of equipment between you and the Telco, a
typical configuration would be Router to CSU/DSU to Telco SmartJack or local
DAX to local loop to long haul to remote local loop to smart jack / local
DAX to CSU/DSU to Router. Several flavors of routers have CSU/DSU's built
into them so that the external box is no longer necessary in some cases.

Unless, of course, this all took place at layer 2.

And I really want to avoid a discussion of whether or not ARF is

Re: Access List/EIGRP Problem

2000-12-24 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Like everything else, it depends.

For short lists, it doesn't make all that much difference.

For complex lists, I agree that most specific first is far easier to
understand and troubleshoot.

Performance problems with access lists are more likely to be
associated with the fact that an access list is there (i.e., forcing
traffic into a slower switching path) than to be caused by the total
number of rules. The number of rules was more of a concern in early
IOS releases where almost everything was process switched.

The most complex access lists will usually be machine-generated, so
they can be tuned for performance. You'll see some extreme cases in
carriers; I know of a tier 1 ISP that has to restore its
configuration from TFTP, not NVRAM, because NVRAM doesn't hold the
8000-plus access list rules they use.

You know, this is one of those things that really annoys me. The 1750
would be a *perfect* lab router if it could do 802.1q on the fast ethernet
interface. Is this a hardware limitation or a software limitation?

Of course, add 802.1q to the 1700 and the capabilities of the 1700 begin to
encroach on 2600 territory, so I suspect that the lack of trunking is a
conscious decision intended to distinguish between models.

Yes. They have been discussed in the archives before.

If the underlying question is, how good? Then yes again.

Pros: Very ECP1 like. The books read like they were written for a classroom
format. The content is like a reverse engineered CCIE exam.

Cons: They need more rent-a-racks. When I bought a year ago, they would be
booked up for 4-6 months because they had a single rack. Their website used
to look amateur - and was slow, this looks fixed now.

Summary: Good material / content - good addition to the CCIE prep bookshelf.
You had better have access to some equipment though to practice.

 Hi everybody:
I am study BSCN,there are something confused me:
in the book they says:The highest IP address on an active interface is
normally used as the router ID, but this can be overridden by configuring
an
IP address on a loopback interface.
I want to know which will be the Router ID if the loopback IP address
smaller than the active interface IP address?
 Any suggestion will be appreciate,thanks.

 Will Guan

If there are multiple loopback, the router ID will be the numerically
highest IP address on any loopback. In other words,

int loop 0 int loop 1 int loop 2
ip addr 1.2.3.4 ip addr 5.6.7.8 ip addr 2.3.4.6

The router ID, in this case, was 5.6.7.8.

If there is only a single loopback interface, its IP address will
 always be the router ID:

int loop 0 int ser 0 int ser 1
ip addr 1.2.3.4 ip addr 5.6.7.8 ip addr 2.3.4.6

Here, the router ID would be 1.2.3.4.

If there were no loopback interfaces, the numerically highest active
 interface would be used:

int eth 0 int ser 0 int ser 1
ip addr 1.2.3.4 ip addr 5.6.7.8 ip addr 2.3.4.6
   no shutdown shutdown no shutdown

2.3.4.6 would be the router ID.

Re: RJ45 to AUI

2000-12-24 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

A 10baseT to AUI transceiver is what is seems you want. These are quite readily
available and cheap. By using the transceiver at the AUI end you can get about 100
Metres away cheaply. An AUI solution is far more expensive.

Re: CCIE practice exams

2000-12-24 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

I reckon the fear is real. As I have said in the past I have been involved in the
telcom, computing and data comms fields for more years than most people reading this
have in this world yet I still fear what little I know.

I have young guns araound me that come to me for all sorts of help. My job is to be a
bit of a mentor. I can help in more ways and with experiences that aren't in books.

I fear the exams and bet most of the young guns would do better. But fear I shouldn't
as I can see things others miss, my nose for problems in the real world is good. One
day I'll have the confidence to pass the CCIE for I feel confidence as well as
knowledge must be a real part to it all. I will however enjoy learning more on the
way and as old and tired I become I won't have a lot of trouble carrying the knowledge
I gain.

Take it for what it is worth.

Keep Smilin'

Hi

I notice three things in your cut n paste...

1) From the sh ver, you have no flash installed. That is why it is still
booting from the ROMs. Better get some flash.

2) There is no DRAM installed either. The router is one of the 2500's
that
shipped with 2MB on board, of which the router is dividing up into 1MB
shared and 1MB for operations. Better get some DRAM too. If this is a
non
production router, there is nothing wrong with running 72pin parity 70ns
or
faster.

3) There is a time out in the Con, AUX, and VTY lines, i.e. if there is
no
activity for apx 5mins the router will discontect/reset the line. This
is
configurable.

 Hi

Sounds like the config-reg is set to 0x2101 as the router has booted
 from
ROM (R2501(boot)#) and not flash. The normal setting on a 2501 is
 0x2102.
