Re: ccie security advice [7:25024]

2001-11-03 Thread nrf

I would also say it depends on whether you like the stuff. Some people
really like fiddling with security procedures, and some people despise it
(same could be said for R/S topics). I know it sounds trite, but I would
advise anybody against doing something they despise, even if there is money
to be made.

So the next question is how do you know whether you will like security or
not? Some simple tests may do. If you are interested in all the stories
about security lately (Microsoft worms, events related to Sept. 11, etc.),
then that is a good sign. If you are really interested in how encryption
and authentication really work, down to the PDU level, then that is a really
good sign.

On the other hand, maybe you find it all boring, and there's nothing wrong
with admitting that to yourself. There is no law that says that you must be
interested in everything. Everybody here has a certain topic that just
bores them to tears. While I like networking, I can think of a few
networking subspecialties that just put me to sleep in a Sunday minute.

Note!!
The URL you refer to is for a 2500 series router - not the 2610 you are
having problems
with.

If you HAD TO "strap CTS high" you would probably try something like this:
Both the router and your PC are DTE devices and the rollover is allowing a
DTE-DTE
communication. Since a DTE normally pulls the DTR signal high once it is
ready to
communicate, you should be able to "strap CTS high" by soldering the DTR
wire to the CTS
wire inside the DB-9 connector.

I do NOT recommend the above procedure. I have worked with many 2610 routers
and have
never seen this exact problem but I have seen a number of Cisco devices with
dead
console ports.

Try connecting to the Aux port. You should get a screen and be able to type.
If that
works you almost surely have a dead console port.

Hi Jonathan ,
Thanks for your reply ,
I am using the Cisco blue cables and I am also using the Cisco conector
on the serial port of my IBM compatible computer with Win98 , I can connect
and use other Cisco devices , ie Catalyst 1924 and Cisco 2620 with it and it
works fine , ie these devices are accepting my commands , the only prob is
with my Cisco 2610 , I have changed everything , ie the PC, the OS , the
cable , the connector , and tried it with all combinations , but it is not
acepting the input .
I am planning to buy a Smart Net package ultimately if it does not get
solved , but I wanted to know if there is any solution to this issue , which
could have arised to anyone else.
But does anyone know how Strap CTS high as mentioned on this page :

The output means nothing to me (not that I've seen everything ;-)

But the fact you've been given some hardware suggests to me it has been
moved some
distance. I would open the box up and reseat any memory modules and look for
anything
loose. Finding loose stuff happens to me regularly on equipment moves.

Hi Navin,
Before you get too carried away, I strongly suggest abandoning HyperTerminal
and
installing any other good terminal emulator. Try Teraterm Pro, which is an
industrial-strength, stable, freeware terminal emulator that is MUCH better
than
HyperTerminal.

See
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html

Hardware-wise, I assume you are using the standard black or blue rollover
cable from
Cisco, right? Are you using the RJ-45/DB-9 adapter from Cisco or a something
else? What
kind of laptop or PC (or other?) are you using?

In my job at a Cisco reseller I have successfully connected to thousands of
Cisco
console ports (old and new) over the last 3 years and have never even heard
of this
problem. Do other experienced Cisco people see this?

Console Port Problem - Help ! [7:25201]

2001-11-03 Thread Navin Parwal

Hi ,
Iam facing a similar consle port problem as mentioned on this tips at :
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/471/17.html

on my Cisco 2610.
The symptom is as folows :
Output from the router on the console screen will be seen, but anything
which is typed in will not be seen

and the solution mentioned is:
The fix is to have the customer disable hardware flowcontrol or strap CTS
high.

I have disabled the hardware flowcontrol but that does not solvemy problem
, can anyone tell me how to strap CTS high as mentioned in the solution as
i could ot find that option on the Hyper terminal .

Thanks in Advance

Otherwise I'm running out of ideas, unless anybody does know how to turn off

RE: EIGRP [7:25125]

2001-11-03 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler

Some books describe the topology table as a compilation of routing tables
from all the neighboring routers.

Gareth did a good job trying to explain the feasible distance vs. advertised
distance thing...there's also a good explanation of this in Ch 1 of the
EGIRP Network Design Solutions (Cisco Press) - you may need to re-read it a
few times though.

Another thing to remember is that the receiving router adds its interface
metric to the distance reported by the neighboring router.

A router's feasibility distance is its minimum distance to a destination -
put another way, the best path to a destination network.

A neighbor router meets the feasibility condition if it reports a lower
distance than the feasibility distance. As Gareth said, this ensures that
the neighbor isn't using a path back through the querying router

If a router meets the feasibility condition it is a feasible successor.

Clear as mud yet?

Subject: EIGRP [7:25125]

Can anyone please help me on this?

For EIGRP, I understand that for routing table, EIGRP has kept a separate
routing table for each protocol: so it has one for IP EIGRP, another one
for IPX EIGRP, and another one for AppleTalk EIGRP. But what's a topology
table (show ip eigrp topology)?

Also, I have read the BSCN book (by Cisco Press) many many times... I
understand that the successor is the EIGRP main route, while the feasible
successor is the backup route. but the book states that to qualify as a
feasible successor, the next-hop router must have an advertised distance
less than the feasible distance of the current successor - also, what's the
difference between the advertised distance and the feasible distance?

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Hunt

Why would you have 3 msfc's in one chassis? Seems like a waste of money to

Re: Any Ideas For Alternative Internet Route Redundancy??? [7:25183]

2001-11-03 Thread Dennis

Why don't you just route traffic to the headquarters over the frame and
internet traffic over other link? This could be done with static routes or
through the use of a dynamic protocol such as ospf. If you require a more
specific answer you'll need to be more specific with the question. Posting
sanitized current configs also helps...

compatibility module switching between 2901 5000 [7:25182]

2001-11-03 Thread marcus jensen

I've read here and on Cisco's website that the 2901 is Exactly a cat5 with
sup1 and a ws-5213, this is fine. BUT, I've got conflicting reports from
groupstudy posts whether a ws-5213 can do ISL trunking or not, thusly
everyone goes for ws-5213a. I can't seem to confirm this on Cisco's website.

Can anyone confirm this. And, does this mean the ws-5213 inside a 2901 also
can't do ISL, or are there some 2901s with ws-5213a. I've only seen two, and
both were just ws-5213.

This is off a 2901

1 2 WS-X5009 003973541 1.8 2.1 2.1 2.1(6)
2 12 WS-X5213 003977192 1.0 1.4 2.1(6)

Thank you
Marcus

Re: is it really bad market for ccie ? [7:24297]

2001-11-03 Thread news

Hi

I agree with you. Even cert like CCIE is getting less and less important
for companies. I don't see the hype for CCIE that existed in 1999.
I am currently working on it but wonder whether it is worth it yet or not.
However, it is still a very difficult exam to pass. It is still very
challenging
I wrote both version of the test, 2 day as well as 1 day. Let me tell you,
1 day is not better then 2 day test. I found it to be more difficult when I
wrote the 1 day lab.
Often it become a personal challenge than the worth of cert that drive
people from going after this cert. It is still a good certificate and worth
getting it. Just look around
and you will see there are still very CCIE in the world compare the size of
the market. Once market bounce back, demand for CCIE may increase. Because
then every
company wants to make hire CCIE because CCNP now days is matter of reading
book and writing exam. so when companies realize that they will go after
CCIE only, atleast
it is guarantee that person has hands on. However, the downside is, pay
will be like CCNP as well.

Well, for me, once (if) I get my CCIE, it will be time to move to Security
and then start to think of management?
my 2cents.

DLSW issue [7:25179]

2001-11-03 Thread news

Hey guys

I need help on understanding DLSW.
I can not use the keyword promiscuous any where in my config.

R3 and R2 is connected to Ring 100. R5 is connected to R3 and R2 via serial
link.

Task:
1. establish DLSW peer from R5 and R3 and R2
2. R5 should choose R2 as a better path to reach Ring 100
3. If R2 is unavailable then R3 should be backup for R5
4. R3 and R2 should establish peer only when there is a DLSW data to sent
5. Configure R3 such a way so that if any router is added to the network
will establish a peer with R3 to reach Ring 100

Any tips or suggestion on how to configure these?

Faisal

How is this command going to change the AS path list. The require task was
that R4 should see the loopback is from AS 200 not AS 100 (which is the
originator).

Your making it too hard, you don't need the dialer map but you do need a
dialer
string 1800111. Your not telling the interface where to call.

Re: is it really bad market for ccie ? [7:24297]

2001-11-03 Thread DAve Diaz

I agree, you hit the nail on the head, it ccie really worth these days,
typing is that is tested, 8 hours to prove you know your stuff, lets face it
how hard is it to memorise a test and give the questions to the next guy,
does the programme today really meet the demand, no, does it really test
your knowledge no, does Juniper have any real market share no, like the
market stock price for cisco, ccie will follow the same path, down down
down, especially now the programme has changed from a great product to one
that max's money into Cisco, All of cisco is after revenue annd thats what
drives change, cash flow.
