Force Cisco router to ignore RTS checking [7:39408]

2002-03-24 Thread dovelet

Hi all,

I have a Cisco 2501 router and wanted to connect a x.25 device, the Cisco
router is connected a Cisco DCE v.35 cable to that device. However, I found
that the x.25 device cannot provide the CTS signal and so the Cisco show
that the RTS signal was down. I wondering is there any command can ignore
the Cisco router to check the RTS signal or force the RTS signal to "UP"?

Regrds,
Dovelet

Re: Why we need BGP to establish MPLS? [7:39403]

2002-03-24 Thread nrf

Yes you are essentially correct.

Inter-domain MPLS may or may not require BGP, depending on the exact nature
of your network.

Watch out for that MPLS/VPN book. It provides a hugely Cisco-biased view of
MPLS, significantly more Cisco-biased than most Ciscopress books. So if
you think your network will always be 100% Cisco until the end of time, I
guess that's OK. But if you think you might ever want to use gear from
other vendors, you may want to consult some other sources.

Hi, all

Thank everyone here so kind to answer my questin. I am reading the MPLS

require BGP because what it will need to know by the control plane is

Re: ISDN Problem [7:39342]

2002-03-24 Thread Danny Andaluz

Dialer string is for use on dialer interfaces because for whatever reason
you cannot use a dialer map (not sure why). If you use physical interfaces
like BRI's or Async's, you typically use the dialer map, but since these are
also "dialer" interfaces, you can use the dialer string as well. With a
dialer string, when you ping the remote end, the router does a lookup of the
routing table and sees that to get to the destination IP it has to send the
traffic out of the dialer interface. As soon the as the traffic hits the
int, the router checks to see if the traffic is interesting and determines
whether or not to dial out based on that. With a dialer map you are
statically mapping the other end of the connection. Just remember this:
Dialer maps or Strings= Legacy DDR (physical interfaces) and Dialer strings=
dialer interfaces.

Hope this helps.

Re: TCP AcK and Seq numbers...HELP [7:39393]

2002-03-24 Thread John Green

i know there are many more knowledgeable here but just
lets get started with this thread.

Source sends a syn packet to the destination and this
packet contains sequence number(say x) and ACK bit not
set
The destination receives it and sends a syn and ack.
this packet contains its sequence number(say y) and
ACK bit or flag is set
Source recieves the syn and ack and sends back an
ack back to destination.

destination receives the ack and tcp connection is
established henceforth.
Refer RFC 793 for further details. (but any tcp/ip
book would deal with this)

RE: What's a good, cheap ATM router? [7:39390]

I guess I should specify that the Vivid Newbridge CS1000 is an ATM switch
with a 1.6GB backplane, has 16 ports for OC-3 modules, and is capable of
doing both pvc's and svc's.

I'm just wondering how low cost I can go (I stay broke!!) on the router side
(which, according to what I've been told, is what we're tested on
configuring in the CCIE lab).

Thanks for your help.

2002-03-24 Thread Spencer Penfield

Hi there,

My friend bought a Cisco 751 Router from a company and the company does not
the password. The cisco site gives a step by step instructions; however, I
am not sure what they mean 'by reloading original software' and where I
download it since my friends does not have any software. It is somewhat
confusing. I did not have any problem recovering the password on Cisco 1601
Router. How do I go about doing it. I have alredy copied the 750erase.hex
file. Any help is appreciated.

SP

Here is the link: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_700.html

Step-by-Step Procedure
Power cycle the router. While it is booting up, press the ESC key a couple
of times. This puts the unit into a software load mode. The unit will
respond with the following prompts:
Ready to upload new firmware into flash. Baud (1=19.2K, 2=2400, 3=38.4K,
9=9600)?
Select the baud rate for the transfer (in this example, 9600 is chosen). The
unit will respond with the following prompt:
Begin ascii upload at 8n1/9600 baud.
Start the ascii file transfer of the image: 750erase.hex for the 750 series
or 760erase.hex for the 760 and 770 series. These files are not
interchangeable. This file must be treated as a text file for loading into
the unit via the console port. At 9600, the transfer takes approximately 12
minutes. While the transfer takes place, the LINE LED flashes rapidly. When
the transfer is complete, the unit responds with the following prompts and
then reboots itself:
Firmware transfer successful.
Now writing firmware into FLASH, standby ...
Firmware upload complete.
Erase Version of 750/760 firmware. This will erase all configured parameters
ERASING NVRAM...
!--- unit reboots itself
Ready to upload new firmware into flash.
Baud (1=19.2K, 2=2400, 3=38.4K, 9=9600)?

**Reload the original software and repeat step 2.

Re:Suggestions for CCIE Written [7:39378]

2002-03-24 Thread A.Steinbock

Daniel,

I passed the CCIE written and I am now scheduled for the lab on May 24th in
Brussells. Wish me luck.

To pass the CCIE written I used Bruce Caslow's Book and Boson #1 by Bernard.
This groupstudy list was also a great help.

I would highly recommend Boson in general, and Bernard's practice tests
specifically for CCIE certification. Beside the outstanding practice practice
test, Bernard answered my emails with concern and showed me how to stay
focused.

Now I need someone to show me how to stay focused on my lab!

Hi Folks..

Could anyone know that how can I find free off-line Earlang B Calculator ?

The Erlang B Calculator can be used to work out how many lines you need for
a trunk group if you know the Busy Hour Traffic which the trunk group is
offered.

Thanks..

RE: 1760s [7:39338]

2002-03-24 Thread Mark Odette II

... Speaking of memory add-on. I heard this rumor the other day that Cisco
has a new plan for addressing the ability to by third-party DRAM and FLASH
for their products, and the plan is the following:

For all NEW products that they introduce to market (Routers, Switches,
Firewall appliances that aren't in production at this time), they are going
to release them with memory that is 100% proprietary and can't be purchased
on the open retail market.

Does anybody know if this has fact to it??

If so, would the 1760 be considered one of the units that are part of the
new product line with the proprietary memory in it??

Inquiring minds would really like to know :)

They're shipping in limited quantities. I sold three to a customer where
they still sit in the box. If you're looking to buy and think you'll want
more memory, get the 1760-V. It has more memory for less than purchasing
add-on memory from Cisco.

RE: issue with PIX and dhcp ? [7:39269]

2002-03-24 Thread Mark Odette II

Oh, he could do that, but if someone were multi-tasking (read: doing many
things at the same time and suddenly tried hopping on the "net", couldn't,
and it wasn't all that important at the moment, and they knew WHY they
couldn't get on the net (because of the DHCP issue)), they could just
power-cycle the PIX and keep going... It doesn't really matter... its just
one of those lazy factorseither way would probably take about as much
time... it just depends on your attitude. :)

I personally would, and always do, come to a screeching halt with what I'm
doing to go through the steps of troubleshooting to find out why the "net"
suddenly became unreachable I mean, you never know, something may have
changed physically in the topology, or maybe you entered a command on the
PIX that you didn't verify that you did correctly, and simply started
denying yourself access to the net. :)

Why doesn't he just telnet/console into the PIX and do
a 'ip address dhcp ...' instead of rebooting? This
should renew it - at least this was working for me in
a PIX class I attended last week. I did ask the
instructor if you could change the MAC address on the
PIX due to ISPs locking DHCP down to a MAC address and
right nows theres not a way to change the MAC.

Re: interface, MAC, IP_address ? [7:39352]

2002-03-24 Thread bergenpeak

All DOCSIS modems will have MAC addresses and the modem
will use DHCP to get an IP address. The modem must be
able to get an IP address via DHCP as part of it's boot-up
sequence.

Some older modem technologies did not require the modem have
a MAC address. A proprietary protocol was used between
the modem and the CMTS to configure and access the modem.

Note, bridges and switches will have lots of MAC addresses
and very few or no IP addresses.

For the most part, a modem is a bridging device.

~Hi guys,
~
~I did a search on Karl solie End book Labs and here is the
~tough extract for
~you guys to get your help and comments.
~
~
~Q1.A Main frame resides on Vlan2 with three IP Addresses which
~coreesponds
~to single MAC address. Configure Router R4(vlan2) to suppot forwarding
~traffice to single MAC address for all three IP address???

Static arp entries will do this. I.E.

511(config)#arp 1.1.1.1 3.3.3 arpa
2511(config)#end
2511#sh arp
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
Internet 1.1.1.1 - 0003.0003.0003 ARPA

~
~Q2
~A large amount of IP fragmentation is occuring on VLAN2.Tune
~DLSW so that
~the IP fragmentation will not occur as soon

Make the largest frame size 1500 with lf 1500, I have heard that you should
even take it a little smaller, to like 1476. That should stop the
fragmentation.

~
~
~Q3. Configure Rx such that workstations on Vlan30 can
~dynamically locate
~their default gways. They are not using DHCP?? (Page 1167)

You could use IRDP here.

~
~Q4 On R2, create a SAP filter blocking all saps starting with "fake"
~

Don't quote me on this one, but I believe that this would do it:
access 1000 deny -1 0 fake*

~Q5.Configure VLan30 such that saps are advertised onlu when
~new server comes
~online?

No idea, will have to find out.

~
~Q6.Configure R1 as an NTP server. Configure peer asssociation
~such that R4
~synchronize with R1. When R4 synchronized allow R2 and R3 to
~synchronize
~with R4. If R4 is not Synchronized with R1, R2 and R3 also should not
~synchronize??
~

This is an interesting one, no idea, will have to try it.

~
~Q7. COnfigure R1 so that when the user Unnamed logs into the
~router, its
~immdediately put in enable mode.(pg 1177)

username unnamed privilege 15 password

~
~Hope u will enjoy...

ACRC chapter 11 (optimizing routing) questions [7:39372]

2002-03-24 Thread bergenpeak

I'm reading through ACRC chapter 11 and have a couple of
questions. I expect these are pretty basic...

* On page 267-268 theres the comment that "Only a default static
route is automatically advertised". I'm not sure I understand
this-- does it mean that I don't need to enable redistribution
in my iGP or eGP in order for other routers to see an advetisement
for this default static?

* route filters (page 270 and 271). It looks like diagram 11-3 is
incorrect and does not match with the steps provide on p270. In
the second diamond ("is there an entry for this address"), if the
answer is "no", isn't the update filtered? (step 4 on p270, indicates
that the update would be dropped)

* the "distance" command (p284). Specifically the "address" and
"mask" parameters. Do these two parameters define what interfaces
the "distance" command is actually applied? Can one have multiple
"distance" command per routing instance?

* does the "ip default-network" subnet command only have meaning or
significance in classful routing protocols (RIPv1, IGRP)?
** Must this command be coupled with the "ip classless" command on those
routers which will see the advertisement for the "default-network"?
** Does a "0.0.0.0/0 route get advertised or is there an attribute
set on the default network update which the routers detect and then
create a "0.0.0.0/0" routing entry whch has the same next hop as
the default network?

Thanks

What d'ya mean?
My failing German at school was due to the Americans?
I'd always blamed it on a lack of interest and study time, but that does
make me feel a little better.

Which Indians we talking about here? Shall we go 50/50 on that one?

We're eternally grateful, and maybe one day soon we can help you out?
You help us with quantity, we help you with quality - Ouch!
We're probably more on the same side than ever before and we still can't get
on.

BSCN [7:39365]

2002-03-24 Thread G Z

Passed the test. A couple points. The test was somewhat difficult but was
basically memorization ,not analytical like computer science(programming).
It reminded me of history tests in the past. I used a boson test for 2 days
(test #1), it helped a little but was not worth the money. The boson format
was not very close to the actual test and it was much easier than the actual
test. I read the cisco press book. I have no network experience.
As what the test is worth, I'm afraid all the knowledge will be forgotten in
not too much time unless I can find a job in this area.
The format shouldn't matter, if you know the subject then you'll be ok.
Hopefully this will help someone and is of course my view only.

RE: issue with PIX and dhcp ? [7:39269]

2002-03-24 Thread Bautista, Audy

I set up the PIX with the outside interface (statically) the same as the IP
given to my server from the cable modem and it didn't work, so I reset the
cable modem and I had no choice but to put the outside interface on DHCP,
and it picked up an IP immediately. I did this around 1:30 am; so far so
good. But I'm worried about the problem you had; the IP failing.
Theoretically, as long as I keep my the PIX plugged in exactly the way I
have it and the same DHCP server is available, it should continue to renew
it's lease 50% into the lease period.

The bad part for me about the changing IP address is that I had to change
the host records for 2 of my domain names to reflect the new IP address
(bummer). I've had the same IP address for over 3 months. I'll let you know
if I have any other issues with this. Thanks.

They're shipping in limited quantities. I sold three to a customer where
they still sit in the box. If you're looking to buy and think you'll want
more memory, get the 1760-V. It has more memory for less than purchasing
add-on memory from Cisco.

Re: Basic ACL Q [7:39334]

2002-03-24 Thread Daniel Thiffeault

you want to block 172.16-31.0.0

160001
170001 0001
180001 0010
190001 0011
200001 0100
210001 0101
220001 0110
230001 0111
240001 1000
250001 1001
260001 1010
270001 1011
280001 1100
290001 1101
300001 1110
310001

from that you notice that the first 4 bits of the second octet never
changes- they always are 0001. Those are the bits you do not want to touch.
Those are the "Care bits". The last four bits of the second octet are the
ones that are changing- Those bits could be either 0 or 1. It does not
matter. They are the "don't care bits".
The "don't care bits" in wildcard mask are replaced by ones. The "care bits"
are replaced by zeroes.

You want the first octect to be 172 and nothing else - you are caring
You want the first four bits of the second octet to be 0001 and nothing
else - you are caring about those first four bits.
You allow the last four bits of the second octet to either take the value 1
or 0 - you are not caring about their values
You are not caring about the third octet
You are not caring about the fourth octet

now the wildcard mask should be:

0
15 255 255

You have 172.16.0.00.15.255.255

To verify if your mask is working accordingly you OR the two values. it
gives

1010 1100 0001 (172.16.0.0)
            (0.15.255.255)

1010 1100 0001 (172.31.255.255)

Now you test for example 172.20.0.0. OR this value with the wildcard mask

1010 1100 0001 0100 (172.20.0.0)
            (0.15.255.255)

1010 1100 0001 (172.31.255.255)

This is the same value. You could repeat the operation with any values in yo
u range and it will always give you the same (172.31.255.255) when ORed with
the wildcard mask.

Finally you should have:

access-list 90 deny 172.16.0.0 0.15.255.255
access-list 90 permit any

Why doesn't he just telnet/console into the PIX and do
a 'ip address dhcp ...' instead of rebooting? This
should renew it - at least this was working for me in
a PIX class I attended last week. I did ask the
instructor if you could change the MAC address on the
PIX due to ISPs locking DHCP down to a MAC address and
right nows theres not a way to change the MAC.

RE: issue with PIX and dhcp ? [7:39269]

2002-03-24 Thread Mark Odette II

"It Depends"!!

Historically, If the PC's DHCP-assigned address has never really changed
that often, then you should be fine. If it has changed on a rather frequent
basis, then it'll probably stop having outside communication after a small
period of time.

Just as a side note, in some parts of the US, specifically the D/FW area of
Texas, the Cable-modem providers have not configured their networks in a way
that the PIX 501 doesn't get a DHCP address. One of my colleagues is
running this with his provider. He has a PIX 501 set up on Cable-modem, and
just has to bounce his PIX every once in a while because the DHCP lease
doesn't renew in a standard automated fasion. But as long as he reboots the
PIX, it gets a new address, and keeps on transcieving

I'll have to check to see who his provider is though to give you an idea of
who does this functionality.

I'm having the same problem with a PIX 501 and cable modem. I'm probably
just going to take the IP received from the PC by the ISP and just put it
statically on the outside interface on the PIX. Does anyone foresee any
issues with this setup?
