Re: EIGRP Question: Change of Feasible Distance (FD) - Please [7:39984]

2002-03-31 Thread Hamid Ali Asgari

But what if a route's metric changes, so that the minimum distance to
the destination increases beyond the FD. In this case will the FD be
updated or not?

If the answer is yes, (as I assume it to be) why does Dyole say that
because the route didn't become active the FD didn't change.(Chapter
8, before figure 8.15)

Thanks,
Hamid

RE: If it's a 2611, you're out of luck [7:39788]

2002-03-31 Thread Rik Guyler

Mayo, I humbly must disagree with you. The 2600 series does indeed require
IP Plus. The newer 1700s (1721, 1760 probably) only require IP (I setup
trunking on a 1721 w/IP a couple of weeks ago), which makes them a perfect
choice for low-cost InterVLAN routing.

I have attempted to use IP but found the necessary configs missing.

It should work with IP feature. IP Plus is not mandatory but recommended.

So if I understand, a 2620 router with a Fast Ethernet intf. with IP Plus
feature set is reqd. to get trunking working, either isl or dotqIs this
absolutely true that you need IP PlusHas anyone got it working with just

the IP feature set with ISL trunking? The reason I ask is the IP Plus
feature set requires more than 24Mb of mem. and I only have 24Mb on my
2620Moreover, there are no feature sets for 11.3x on Cisco's site. That
could have helped :-)
Thank you.

Rik, if you don't mind my asking, which IOS release did you try for the

RE: pix questions [7:39986]

2002-03-31 Thread Lidiya White

Activation key is something you can request from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
They generate act keys based on your request.
By default PIX doesn't come with all features enabled (unless you
specifically asked for it when you were buying a PIX).
So let's say if you decided to run IPSec, and want DES enabled, you need
a new act key. Or if you want failover enabled - again a new act key.
Those are feature based act keys.
If you bought a PIX firewall with 100 user license, and in few months
your company grew, you'll need a new activation key for more users
(let's say 500 user license). This one is connection based act key.
Activation keys are cut based on the serial number of the PIX Firewall,
so if you'll be upgrading OS code, you don't need a new act key. But If
you'll be replacing your PIX Firewall, you'll need to request a new
activation key...

Experience & the archives show that:

-Bruce Caslow's Book
-Boson #1 or #2 by Bernard
-CCO

During the period that you wait & practice for the lab exam, you will have
plenty of time to read:

Jeff Doyle (1 &2)

I also second John Neiberger when he says, get your CCDP first. CID

Hey John, I wish you good luck with your lab. I know you have about 10 more
days to go.
I hope you will continue to contribute to this list after you get your 9###,
otherwise we will miss your valuable posts a lot.

Catalyst switch user interface [7:39993]

2002-03-31 Thread LU

Hi all,

I am trying to put together a summary of the user
interfaces of different
Catalyst switches to help me remember this stuff,
seems to me that there are
four flavor:

1) Menu interface for Cat1900/2820(except Enterprise
SW which uses CLI),
3000 and all Token Ring Switches

2) IOS like CLI interface with layer 2 switching:
1900/2820 Enterprise,
2900XL/3500XL

3) IOS like CLI with layer 3 switching: 2948G-L3,
4908G-L3, 4000, 4840, 3550,
native IOS of Cat6000, routing blades of Cat 6500 and
5000/5500 and 8500

4) The rest are all CatOS

Please correct mistakes and help me with any missing
parts.

Thanks
LU

Re: If it's a 2611, you're out of luck [7:39788]

2002-03-31 Thread Cisco Nuts

Ha! Ha!.That's exactly what I meantHaving the IP feature set or
the IP/IPX...feature set only requires 8M flash and 24M memAnd you
can configure intervlan routing on itAnd thus was my question: If
this works, then why IP PLUS feature set...which is what you noted in
your earlier email Nevertheless, I am going to try it out in the next
half hour (it's Sunday) and let you know if just the IP feature set
works!!

Nevertheless, you are always welcome for a beer or two if you happen to
be in our area (Reston/Herndon).. :-)

playing vlans and ISL [7:39996]

2002-03-31 Thread geek

ok,

I have a 4700 with a fastE card that is connected to a 5505 switch (port
16).

  |---2514 (vlan1)
4700---switch|---2501 (vlan2)
  |---2509 (vlan3)

Port 16 is set for trunking ISL:

(snip)
Port Mode Encapsulation Status Native vlan
-
 2/16 on isltrunking 3

I have 3 subinterfaces setup on the FastE; fa0.1, fa0.2, fa0.3
each subinterface is IP'ed for 3 different networks;
192.168.1.0,192.168.2.0,192.168.3.0 (respectively):

(snip)
FastEthernet0.1 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is DEC21140, address is 0050.732e.da0a (bia 0050.732e.da0a)
  Internet address is 192.168.1.250/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,
 reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ISL Virtual LAN, Color 1.
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

I have 1 router pugged into each vlan on the switch:

(snip)
Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is Lance, address is 0010.7be8.72d1 (bia 0010.7be8.72d1)
  Internet address is 192.168.3.1/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
 reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

I have RIP running on all the routers:

(snip)
Routing Protocol is "rip"
Sending updates every 30 seconds, next due in 6 seconds
Invalid after 180 seconds, hold down 180, flushed after 240
Outgoing update filter list for all interfaces is not set
Incoming update filter list for all interfaces is not set
  Redistributing: rip
Default version control: send version 1, receive any version
Interface Send Recv Triggered RIP Key-chain
FastEthernet0.1 1 1 2
FastEthernet0.2 1 1 2
FastEthernet0.3 1 1 2
Automatic network summarization is in effect
  Maximum path: 4
  Routing for Networks:
192.168.1.0
192.168.2.0
192.168.3.0
  Routing Information Sources:
Gateway Distance Last Update
  Distance: (default is 120)

now the problem. I am not getting the rip updates on the other routers. when
I do a show ip route on the router connected to vlan 2 for instance:

(snip)
Gateway of last resort is not set

C192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Ethernet0

all I see is the connected network. Nothing from RIP?!?

What am I missing??

Thanks,

-Joe-

I think I found it... I had some IP'ing wrong.

I can see the routes now :^)

Gateway of last resort is not set

R192.168.1.0/24 [120/1] via 192.168.2.1, 00:00:07, Ethernet0
C192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Ethernet0

RE: AS5301 modem question [7:39917]

2002-03-31 Thread Rik Guyler

Michael, I have not worked on a 5301, only a 5300 so I will tell you what I
know and maybe it will carry over. Since nobody else has any ideas, maybe
this will help.

In a 5300, the T1 card is a different card than the modem card(s). You said
this is a quad T1 card so you should see 4 T1 ports on a card by themselves
with maybe a couple of various other ports like console, etc. The modem
cards, again on my 5300, had no ports to speak of. They were accessed
directly via the backplane of the device. In order to gather modem
information, type "show modem" at the enable prompt and this will output
individual modem stats as well as tell you how many modems you have.

If the 5301 is like the 5300, there are different modem options depending on
the options you ordered. The 5300 could have up to 96 modems per card and
held up to 2 cards for a total of 192 modems in a single chassis.

Hope this helps!

Rik

I looked at the example on Pg. 352, and the distance did change. I think
the guy just wrote it weirdly. If you look at the remaining tables in ch 8,
the new metric rose from 1280 to 5888.

Sure, some vendors have implemented it. Not just any vendor, but most
notably, Cisco has partially implemented 802.1w in the 6500, the 4000, and
related switches. 802.1x has been implemented into several of the lower-end
Cat switches, Ciscosecure ACS, and should be integrated into the 4000/6000
shortly. As far as other vendors are concerned, I believe Foundry has
implemented 802.1w in some of its higher-end products. Enterasys too. Some
of the authentication server vendors like Funk support 802.1x also. Most
of the wireless LAN vendors support or have announced that they are
implementing support of 802.1x into their gear.. As far as 802.1v is
concerned, I don't think any of the larger vendors have shown any interest,
leaving it to small players like Marvell and others.

I take it you are talking only about 802.1w (dot1v and dot1x have nothing to
do with STP). Not really, at least not yet, because the present-day
implementations are not flexible at all. Foundry has commands to turn RSTP
on and off. Cisco has completely integrated RSTP into MST and has no
special RSTP commands. I expect this to change in the future as vendors
integrate more tuning features.

Probably not at the moment. 802.1w offers significantly faster failover,
but not that fast. It definitely helps, though, and combined with other
features might indeed offer SONET-like restoration.

If you set the root switch with the CLI command

help for STUN [7:40012]

Dear All,

I require certain help regarding serial tunneling (STUN). The modem
connected to the home router is US Robotics 33.6k courier.

Here are the details of the current scenario in the Serial Tunneling issue:

1. Serial interfaces of the 2 routers (home and remote)have been configured
for Stun.

2. The serial interface on the home router is showing UP, but needs the
modem to provide the clocking(DCE). How do u do that?

3. The handshake process is not going through when the call lands on the
answering modem connected to the home router. How do u set this right?

Pls find below the configs for both the routers along with the connectivity

RE: root switch [7:39975]

2002-03-31 Thread Larry Letterman

For the most part here at Cisco, we have no guarrantee
that setting a switch to root will stop another switch from
coming up as root. However, we set all our roots/sec roots by issuing
the set spantree root command. This should lower the prio. of the
root/sec root switches to insure that they will always be the roots...

We also use portfast to insure no unwanted switches are plugged into
our network and allowed to become live
