Cisco switches and laptops [7:56731]

2002-11-02 Thread Barry Warrick
I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same issues as we are having
at work. We have about 20 remote sites and are in the middle of a conversion
from 3com equipment to Cisco. Most of the sites we upgrade are getting a
Cisco Catalyst 2950 or 3550 switch. A pattern seems to be forming in that
after every site that is upgraded, a laptop user who bounces around from
site to site, cannot login because it won't let go of their ip address from
the last site they were at. No one has this problem at the remaining 3com
switch sites. At first I thought it was coincidence, but now its clear that
it happens at sites we change to cisco switches. I have enabled portfast on
all the switchports that are used for workstation access. This has
alleviated some of the problems with laptop users, but others still have
difficulty. Most users are using Dell laptops with Xircom network/modem
combo card. I thought for sure portfast would cure the issue, but it has
not. Anyone else have any experience, thoughts, or ideas?

Re: switch and router security [7:56721]

2002-11-02 Thread Wow
It may not be practical due to the physical location of the equipment but
you might also set up a terminal server. you can ssh to the terminal server
and rev telnet to the device on the console port of the device. then
disable access to the vty lines completely on each device.

My dillema is how to secure remote administration. I have not been able
to
find any documentation supporting SSH on the 4006's. I have found docs on
SSH for the 6509, but only in hybrid mode, and I am running native. I
have
found a sketchy doc for the routers implementation of SSH, but it lists
that
it is not supported software and documents are scarce. What are my other
alternatives? I have read about cisco secure ACS and have ordered the
software, which should enable many options, but they are unclear to me.
Does RADIUS, S/Key, and TACACS+ encrpt the data between my PC and the
router, or does it just encrypt the login iformation between the router
and
the ACS server? I need to protect my sessions end to end. Any advise
would
 be greatly appreciated!

Subject: HSRP VLAN Load Balancing [7:56689]

Here's a scenario I've been faced with recently and have a solution, but
wanted to get any other ideas somebody might have. The question calls for
this:

- - Configure cat1 and cat2 for layer 3 redundancy with HSRP for Vlan 5
- - Configure HSRP such that when both cat switches are available, traffic is
load balanced across both cat switches and when one is unavailable, the other
cat should take over all traffic from Vlan 5.

Here's my configuration idea:

Cat1:

Interface Vlan 5
ip address 150.50.5.5 255.255.255.0
standby 1 ip 150.50.5.100
standby 1 priority 150 preempt
standby 2 ip 150.50.5.200
standby 2 priority 155 preempt

Cat2:

Interface Vlan 5
ip addres 150.50.5.10 255.255.255.0
standby 1 ip 150.50.5.100
standby 1 priority 155 preempt
standby 2 ip 150.50.5.200
standby 2 priority 150 preempt

Cat1 will assume the role of the virtual IP 150.50.5.100 and Cat2 will assume
the role of virtual IP 150.50.5.200. One would then configure the default
gateways on the hosts. Half the hosts have 150.50.5.100 listed first as the
D.G. and the other half would have 150.50.5.200 listed first as the D.G.

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks,

Dale

Understanding Prefix/CIDR [7:56739]

2002-11-02 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

Having a slight problem fully grasping the benefits of Prefix Routing/CIDR.
In the Cisco Press book I am reading it points out the 2 main benefits as
being a reduction in routing table entries and conservation of IP addresses.

Now I understand the first one. The example they give is of a Class C
assignment to a company of 200.100.48.0/21, so they are in fact being
awarded 8 Class C networks but routing table entries need show only
200.100.48.0/21 when using an appropriate routing protocol pointing to this
network.

What I do not understand is how this conserves IP addresses. They might have
a nice way of moving around the subnet mask to reduce routing table entries
but surely they still have 8 Class C IP networks regardless?

One of their networks would be 200.100.50.0 which is a Class C network, and
they have it regardless of the subnet mask?

Can someone please explain?

Thanks, James.

Yep -- that was mean!! Fortunately I have a thick litigator skin!!!
To be honest, I don't pretend to be a know-it-all in this

As for your remarks -- while it doesn't bother me personally -- think about
the chilling effect of caustic criticism on other newbies and persons who

that's what this list was all about. We are here to help one another to

I know that I am somewhat intimidated to ask for help -- when I've seen the

Instead of laying out my questions more frequently, I tend to do the

This list is a learning tool -- for everyone! I think if someone possesses
the knowledge to help others and they are willing to offer such advice and

OK, sorry, that was mean. :-]

 I'll spell it out instead.

When you use HyperTerminal, you are essentially turning your PC into a
keyboard with a CRT, or what used to be called a Dumb Terminal.
 The paradigm
for Cisco router management comes from the days before personal computers.
Teletype typewriter-like devices attached to the console port of
 a mainframe
or minicomputer. Then, an advancement occurred and terminals got
 Cathode Ray
Tubes (CRTs!) But they were essentially still just typewriters
 with a video
display. That's what your PC becomes when you use HyperTerminal.

There's some good history at this site which talks about the DEC VT100
 terminal:

 http://www.cs.utk.edu/~shuford/terminal/dec.html

Whether you use HyperTerminal in serial COM1 or Telnet TCP/IP
 Winsock mode,
you are esentially still just typing on a typewriter that
 controls the router.

When you type ping, it works because the Cisco IOS has a ping
 command. It's
no different that what happens when you type show run or those other
 commands I mentioned.

RE: Understanding Prefix/CIDR [7:56739]

2002-11-02 Thread Boyers Jason
The way that CIDR conserves IP address space is by eliminating the need for
classful networks for every subnet. What used to be a class A network (i.e.
32.0.0.0/8) can be broken up and assigned to various entities (i.e.
32.0.1.0/24 to one company and 32.0.2.0/24 to another). Also, subnets which
require less than the number of hosts given by a classful boundary can be
assigned a subnet in line with the number of hosts required. For example,
company A has an address space of 32.0.1.0/24 assigned to them. If they
have multiple serial links, they can assign 32.0.1.0/30 to one, 32.0.1.4/30
to another, and still use 32.0.1.128/25 for a LAN segment which requires up
to 126 hosts. Previous to CIDR, this would have required 3 classful
networks. If using class A address space, this would have used up
16,777,216 addresses, instead of the 136 used in this example, with the
possibility to use the rest of the /24 for other subnets.

2) 10.5.0.0 should not access any resource on 10.1.0.0

So, the question is how to give internet access for 10.5.0.0.
The internet router is a cisco 2611.

A few other things. Just so you know: RADIUS, S/Key, and TACACS all
encrypt the login/pass from the router to the central authentication
server. If you only have a few routers and switches most people will just
use local usernames and passwords on the routers because its easier to
setup initially. If you really want to do it the right way or have lots
of devices I recommend a central authentication system like the above.
You can audit the system via syslog or the protocols like RADIUS and
TACACS support their own form of auditing/accounting. I personally perfer
RADIUS because it is not proprietary, I grew up using it (I'm familiar
with it), and all of my terminal servers and workstations support it (plus I
wrote my own
RADIUS server several years ago). Radius is good because Windows2K/XP
supports it, OS-X supports it, and *nix supports it. So you can have one
central
login server for your entire network and it can also perform accounting
for the entire network but that is another deal. TACACS was originally
mostly a Cisco thing (If I remember correctly, they developed it to
compete with and extend Livingston's RADIUS protocol. I'm not sure what
other vendors support it now) and while providing great support and tons of
abilities in
Cisco devices, it is not as widely supported by the other networking
vendors as RADIUS is. Radius has pretty much become the defacto standard
for authorization via
multiple platforms though TACACS may replace it in the future.

Remember the login/password is still sent unencrypted to the router/switch
regardless of the authentication method used. That is why SSH or IPSec is
recommend for management of your devices. The ideal thing is a seperate
management network but not everyone can do that. I personally recommend
SSH because you can carry a program like PuTTY around on a floppy and
manage your device securely from any Windows machine by just running PuTTY
from the floppy. IPSec takes some configuration on the management
workstation and is usually used when you have a fixed workstation you
use for management.

OK. First of all, have you drawn this out in a diagram? something like:

   internet
|
  router
e0 e1
  10.1.0.0/16 10.5.0.0/16

Second - placement of access-lists
how many access-lists are required?
where?
which direction?
can the goal be accomplished with a single access-list?

well, it appears to me that you can do this in a single access-list if it is
thoughtfully constructed and placed.

Information you have - destination adresses that are forbidden

Infomration you don't have - destination addresses that are permitted (
internet 0
well- you have this information indirectly.

does this give you enough to get started?

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Subnets [7:56745]

If I understand correctly, I believe this will accomplish it.

access-list 100 deny ip 10.5.0.0 0.0.255.255 10.1.0.0 0.0.255.255
access-list 100 permit ip any any
interface e0/1 ip access-group 100 in

This will deny traffic from 10.5.0.0 from getting to 10.1.0.0, but let all
other traffic through and let all 10.5.0.0 traffic get anywhere else it
needs to go.

Re: mapping OSPF tag value into BGP community [7:56450]

We use on our live network static binding between IGP routes tag (static

bergenpeak a icrit dans le message de news:

Is it possible to take tag values carried in OSPF external route
advertisements and automatically map them into the community
attribute of the respective BGP advertisement?

Consider a router running both OSPF and BGP. In the BGP config,
there's a redistribute from OSPF into BGP. Assume that only
OSPF external routes, and hence those with tag values, are being
 redistributed into BGP.

Assume that these external routes have different tag values.

Is there a way to automatically get each respective OSPF tag value
into the community value of the respective BGP route advertisement?

So, if an OSPF external route advertisment has a tag value of 42,
when the route is redistributed into BGP, the respective BGP community
value would be 0:42. If the OSPF tag value was 81, the BGP community
 value would be 0:81.

It looks like it might be IOS possible to statically encode all the
 possible
OSPF tag values, via a route-map, and then set the BGP community value.
I've not actually done this yet, so not sure if its possible. However,
I'd rather use an automated mechanism for this. That way, as new OSPF
external tag types are used in the network, I don't need to update
 route-maps.

 Thanks

changed in 12.x, rendering obsolete materials written based on pre-12.x
versions.

I did not see anything specific in the 12.0 release notes, but I'll betcha
that's the deal.

  Stephane,
If you read a bit further in Doyle's Routing TCP/IP on
 page
654 you will understand the reasoning for the command within the
configuration. It's important to remember as Doyle also points out
 earlier
in his IS-IS chapter, that IS-IS was designed with the purpose of
transitioning TCP/IP to OSI. Doyle gives a brief explanation of this on
  page 593-595.

   Hi all,

I see in Jeff Doyle's book (TCP/IP routing vol1) that for each ISIS
 router
config (for IP routing only) there is the command clns routing. WHY
?
I think this command is not necessary as long as we don't use clns
 router
isis on interfaces : I already configured ISIS for IP routing on my
 2500
routers without clns routing and it works fine !
Does this command bring something in IP only environment ?

   Thanks for clarifying this.

RE: Problems w/Hyperterminal?? [7:56619]

2002-11-02 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer
I'm sorry I flamed you, especially after you asked not to be flamed. Your
question was in no way stupid. Your repeated insistence that you can ping
from HyperTerminal, however That's what got me into witch mode. I would
still love to see you ACK that you understand HyperTerminal.

Hopefully you were so focused on getting the copy to the TFTP server to work
that you just didn't want to deal with the side issue. That would make
sense. I'm glad you got it to work and I bet it was a great learning
experience.

Good luck to you! We're glad to have you joining our field. We need more

OK, sorry, that was mean. :-]

  I'll spell it out instead.

When you use HyperTerminal, you are essentially turning your
 PC into a
keyboard with a CRT, or what used to be called a Dumb
 Terminal.
  The paradigm
for Cisco router management comes from the days before
 personal computers.
Teletype typewriter-like devices attached to the console port
 of
  a mainframe
or minicomputer. Then, an advancement occurred and terminals
 got
  Cathode Ray
Tubes (CRTs!) But they were essentially still just typewriters
  with a video
display. That's what your PC becomes when you use
 HyperTerminal.

There's some good history at this site which talks about the
 DEC VT100
  terminal:

  http://www.cs.utk.edu/~shuford/terminal/dec.html

Whether you use HyperTerminal in serial COM1 or Telnet TCP/IP
  Winsock mode,
you are esentially still just typing on a typewriter that
  controls the router.

When you type ping, it works because the Cisco IOS has a ping
  command. It's
no different that what happens when you type show run or
 those other
  commands I mentioned.

RE: Questions before tests [7:56452]

2002-11-02 Thread Christopher Supino
I don't believe the survey questions effect the difficulty level of
question that you receive on the ensuing exam, as the exam has already
been downloaded to the workstation prior to the point where you are
asked the survey questions. Those testing engines are generally not
sophisticated enough to adjust test scoring on the fly.

The way I interpret this is that the answers you provide will be
evaluated
against your score and performance for future development of tests,
including future scoring mechanisms on exams that are authored. I
don't
think it is real-time modification of question pools or scoring
criteria.
I believe they are attempting to gather statistics to make sure the
tests
are updated properly as time goes on. For example, if someone has 1
year of
experience, but can pass all of the CCNP tests, great, good for him.
But if
a high percentage of candidates with 1 year of experience can pass the
CCPN
tests, then they must evaluate why the tests are so easy to pass. It
would
make sense that they would want these kinds of statistics. This is
purely
my speculation as to the reasoning behind the pre-exam questions..

Although this topic has been discussed in the past, there seems to be
disagreement on the correct answer. Personally, I have read the wording
before some of the surveys and it actually says that your answers will
be
used to help determine scoring on the exam. I don't believe it
determines
what questions you get, only the scoring. Whether it's done on all the
exams
or just some, I don't know. How it's done, I also don't know. My guess
is if
you downplay your skills too much, you will be graded harder because
your
skills should match the certification you're trying to achieve.
Regardless,
don't downplay your skills too much and make sure you really know the
material to be safe! :-)

I'm working on my CCNP, just have CIT to go and when I have taken the
first
three, I just kindof flew through the questions before the test where
Cisco
asks about your experience level, whether or not you can configure
things on
your own or need help with a coworker, etc.

Is it true that your answers will determine how the test is graded or
what
types of questions you will get on the actual test? I thought it was
merely
a survey so Cisco could get an idea of what types of backgrounds people
had
who were taking their tests. But recently I read where someone says
those
questions will actually determine how Cisco tests you and which
questions
from the pool you will receive.

This seems ridiculous to me, but I have to ask.

thanks,
Aaron
