RE: Understanding Prefix/CIDR [7:56739]

2002-11-03 Thread James Gosnold
Ok, thanks for the reply Jason. I think the example I gave was confusing me,
sometimes these books don't use the best example.

In the example I gave then am I to assume that this is NOT conserving IP
addresses but simply an efficient way of reducing entries in routing tables?
The examples you gave demonstrate this more but in the one I put forward
(pulling the bits to the left) 8 Class C networks have been given away
whichever way you look at it.

So this company could have been allocated either:
200.100.48.0/24
200.100.49.0/24
thru to
200.100.55.0/24

Or they could be allocated 200.100.48.0/21, it's the same thing but just one
entry is needed on their 'border' router and others with routes to their
network?

James.

Hi,

I do not know about switching, but for routing, use "Building Scalable Cisco
Networks" from Cisco Press. Also download the IS-IS chapter at cisco web
site (search for the free chapter there).

Also, buy a set of practice tests you need a lot of practice tests so
that the various routing concepts can "stick in" - this is in case you want
to do the exam as soon as possible.

Good Luck.

2002-11-03 Thread Aaron Ajello
I've had good luck with the Exam Cram books by Coriolis Press. They have
some errors, but they've worked for me. Don't be afraid of the fact that
they're for the older test version. The information in these books is still
accurate for the new tests. You'll need something to suplement the errors
and omissions in these books though. I recommend the Cisco Press CCNP
Preparation Library.
My method has been to read the Exam Cram books through a couple times and
use the Cisco books as reference - they're just way too big to read straight
through without falling asleep.
I also recommend getting some practice tests. I've used Transcender which
are good, but I'm not so sure they've been worth the money. Take a look at
some of the cheaper alternatives.

Cisco 3550 study materials and resources [7:56725]

2002-11-03 Thread The Long and Winding Road
As of this morning, I have been able to verify the following resources for
Cisco 3550 study and practice. By Monday, not only will these switches be in
the CCIE Lab, but test takers will be responsible for all L2 and L3
functionality, including things like VLAN tunneling, BGP, and a wealth of
other things. This otter be fun!

1) Configuration guides and command references on CCO
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12111ea1/index.htm
watch the wrap

2) NLI ( www.ccbootcamp.com ) I spoke to Mark Russell. Somewhere on the site
there is a free white paper covering 3550 basics. To judge from the web
site, it appears that 4 of the 5 rental racks have 3550's in them. Mark also
said that his package of updated and new scenarios is due "real soon now"
I'd like to say in a couple of weeks, but I don't remember if that's exactly
what Mark said.

3) IPExpert ( www.ipexpert.net ) has a new study guide out, which includes
scenarios with the 3550. The web site says that there are 3550's in the
rental racks. ( The diagram needs to be updated. )

4) Hello Computers ( www.hellocomputers.com ) has rental racks that include
3550's. They also sell a Lab study book with 24 scenarios and an optional
rack access purchase, including consulting with a CCIE

5) There are any number of e - bay auctions of rack rentals. rack rental
seems to be a going concern these days.

6) Certification Zone ( www.certificationzone.com ) has announced the
release of my white paper on the 3550. For a limited time, non subscribers
may download the two 3550 Lab scenarios with sample configurations that I
wrote as part of this white paper free of charge. Subscribers get the white
paper, the Q&A, and the labs. ( disclaimer - I was paid to write the Cert
Zone material, so I have a vested interest in its success )

Hope this helps.

Chuck

OT: 6509 w/2 SUP2/MSFC2 and FlexWAN [7:56774]

2002-11-03 Thread Tim O'Brien
Hello,

I am working on a high availability solution for a single 6509. The
customer currently has a 6509 with dual SUP 2's and dual MSFC2/PFC2's.
This box also has a FlexWAN module and I am having some difficulty
locating any useful information on Cisco's new site about setting this
up with some high availability or redundancy. When I configure the
MSFC's like normal with HSRP on all of the VLAN interfaces only the MSFC
in the active SUP can see the FlexWAN module and serial ports. They do
not even show up on the second MSFC. Is there a "Ciscoized" way to set
this up?

Thanks for any help!

2002-11-03 Thread Chris
You either have to use the high availability config synch config options.
ie.

Interface lvan 2
ip add x.x.x.x x.x.x.x standby ip add x.x.x.x x.x.x.x

or you have to config everything on the active including the Flexwan, fail
it over and config everything on the standby including Flexwan then fail it
back.

As well as workarounds, both initial and maximum window sizes. For example:

 RFC 3390

 Title: Increasing TCP's Initial Window

This document specifies an optional standard for TCP to increase the
permitted initial window from one or two segment(s) to roughly 4K
bytes, replacing RFC 2414. It discusses the advantages and
disadvantages of the higher initial window, and includes discussion of
experiments and simulations showing that the higher initial window
does not lead to congestion collapse. Finally, this document provides
guidance on implementation issues.

I recently deployed VoIP utilizing E1 link between customer's HQ & branch.
The routers is 2621(ios 12.2) & 3640 (ios 12.1) respectively. The
connection diagram is like this:

PBXE12621-Cat6509-3640-Wireless-3640E1PBX

The signaling is QSIG, PBS are Nortel's. No QOS yet.

My problem is, 1 out of 3 calls, I can't heard any thing beside dial tone.
I pick up the phone, heard the dial tone, dial, then absolute silence.
However, the other side did rang, when the other side pick it up, the same
silence occur. From the debug output, everything went normal, I did debug
isdn q931 and voip ccapi inout. Both went normal, the same output of debug
between the success & failed one.

Any suggestion are very welcome.
