Cisco 3005 VPN concentrator issues. [7:57495]

2002-11-15 Thread Umar Ahmed
Hi all,

Ive got a customer who has a 3005 concentrator connected to our network. He
has setup a vpn connection which he accesses from home over the public
internet. The problem he and the other 200 users are having is that they are
loosing connectivity to the box intermittently throughtout the day. When he
has loss of service, I can ping the vpn box directly connected to my
network, whats even more strange, is that I can ping other customer hosts on
the same subnet . Any ideas ??

Regards,

Umar.

Be careful with Nessus. I haven't used it for a little while, but from
memory it actually does (or can do) the exploit it is looking for , so
can crash vulnerable servers etc.

nessus, without a doubt.

These are OK for port scanning but do not really tell me about
vulnerabilites like ISS does. I've gotten good replies off other lists

all suggesting www.nessus.org . Another recommendation was sara
http://www-arc.com/sara/ . Its open source, runs on UNIX but has a
windows and X-windows based clients for using it. I'm gonna try this
som'ama bitch out and see how it works. I was very happy with snort as

free open source tool and hopefully this tool will be of the same
 quality.

Re: O/T too much time on my hands? [7:57484]

2002-11-15 Thread Marc Thach Xuan Ky
Hi Priscilla,
At the end of the slideshow you ask for other methods, well I've got one
and it's really easy. Before I start you should note that my emoticons
have broken down so you may need to insert your own.
Unfortunately my first attempt to implement the method that I'm about to
describe was error-prone and gave the answer as 31 triangles. Now, the
shape is five-way symmetrical (which indicated that 31 was probably not
correct), it's a five-point star with the pointy nodes joined together
by extra links. We'll call the five pointy bits distribution nodes, and
the five intersections in the middle we'll call core nodes. The area
outside the shape is the access area. Now any given triangle can have
either 3 distribution, 2 distribution / 1 core, 1 distribution / 2 core,
or 3 core (except that the core isn't meshed so this is zero). We will
abbreviate these types as 3D, 2D/1C, 1D/2C, and 3C because we like
jargon. Inspection also shows that the 3D types can be subdivided into
long triangles and fat triangles (3LD and 3FD) 2D/1C types can also be
subdivided, into adjacent D's and non-adjacent D's (2AD/1C and 2ND/1C).
With me so far? Good because we now subdivide the 2AD/IC into three
subtypes: straight down, hanging left and hanging right (2AD/1Cbis,
2AD/1C(L) 2AD/1C(R)). Anyway all told we now have eight categories of
triangle, we can count each category (please don't count the 3Cs during
your leisure time).
So by breaking the problem down this way, it is easier to count and thus
much quicker to implement. In fact we now just have to count from one to
five several times. Of course if we employed a project manager the
probleem could be shared between seven triangle-counters working in
parallel. This could bring the end-date in by a full ten percent.
Disclaimer: Note that if working in a quality-assured environment you
will need eight triangle-counters. The 3C type cannot be assumed to
have no triangles. Time-savings shown are for example only and cannot
be guaranteed.
Just to close, there is a further refinement of the technique. Because
the shape is five-way symmetrical, you in fact only have to count to
one, what could be more straightforward than that? This has the added
benefit of enabling the project to be broken up into even smaller and
more manageable tasks.
One more thing, perhaps it's a trick question. All nodes may run STP so
all loops are removed, hence the correct answer could be zero.
BTW if you were wondering about the access area, it's not actually
relevant.

LRE 9E0-821 Exam [7:57508]

2002-11-15 Thread Ron Hope
Has anyone taken this exam and PASSED? It requires a score of 888, and
there is almost no material, other than what is on the Cisco site. I
have no problem with this, but I had questions I could find NOwhere in
the study material. I feel I know the material very well, but don't
want to take the test again knowing they ask such obscure (and
irrelevant) questions, without more study. If I'm studying American
History and I know there's a test on the US Constitution, I don't expect
to have to know the name of Thomas Jefferson's 4th child just because
it's mentioned somewhere in the book. Any help??

Q in RIP. [7:57513]

2002-11-15 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

In the practice labs at the end of the book of CCIE prac studies by Karl
Solie, I see a very common mention like the one below ( mostly I have
seen under RIP routing, sometimes it also comes in other Routing
protocol sections as well )

Make sure that no other routes are redistributed into the backbone.
OR Don not allow any routes from the lab network to be advertised onto
Backbone 1

To be more specific - the lab is Darth Reid Section V under item # 4.

What exactly could be the configuration under this situations.

The only thing that I could think of is NOT to include redistribute
ospf 1 under RIP process. Is that all it needs or am I missing
something else?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Since this is not related to Cisco-specific nor networking specific, I have
a different take at this puzzle. What I've seen is only four triangles and a
trapezoid base. Other lines are just the reflection of the triangles... It's
fun to hypothesize all the possibilities that the problem could be or should
be, etc... However, it may not be a practical approach to solve complex
problems. I'm in favor of the simplicity approach when it comes to solving
problem.

Re: O/T too much time on my hands? [7:57484]

2002-11-15 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer
I like your methods.

Since we're networking people, I think the best answer is, run the STP on it
first, and the answer is:

ZERO triangles!

That wasn't really what I had in mind, but it's a good one! Thanks for the
insight. :-)

Priscilla

Marc Thach Xuan Ky wrote:

 Hi Priscilla,
At the end of the slideshow you ask for other methods, well
 I've got one
and it's really easy. Before I start you should note that my
 emoticons
have broken down so you may need to insert your own.
Unfortunately my first attempt to implement the method that I'm
 about to
describe was error-prone and gave the answer as 31 triangles.
 Now, the
shape is five-way symmetrical (which indicated that 31 was
 probably not
correct), it's a five-point star with the pointy nodes joined
 together
by extra links. We'll call the five pointy bits distribution
 nodes, and
the five intersections in the middle we'll call core nodes.
 The area
outside the shape is the access area. Now any given triangle
 can have
 either 3 distribution, 2 distribution / 1 core, 1 distribution
 / 2 core,
or 3 core (except that the core isn't meshed so this is zero).
 We will
abbreviate these types as 3D, 2D/1C, 1D/2C, and 3C because we
 like
jargon. Inspection also shows that the 3D types can be
 subdivided into
long triangles and fat triangles (3LD and 3FD) 2D/1C types can
 also be
 subdivided, into adjacent D's and non-adjacent D's (2AD/1C and
 2ND/1C).
With me so far? Good because we now subdivide the 2AD/IC into
 three
subtypes: straight down, hanging left and hanging right
 (2AD/1Cbis,
2AD/1C(L) 2AD/1C(R)). Anyway all told we now have eight
 categories of
triangle, we can count each category (please don't count the
 3Cs during
 your leisure time).
So by breaking the problem down this way, it is easier to count
 and thus
much quicker to implement. In fact we now just have to count
 from one to
five several times. Of course if we employed a project manager
 the
probleem could be shared between seven triangle-counters
 working in
parallel. This could bring the end-date in by a full ten
 percent.
Disclaimer: Note that if working in a quality-assured
 environment you
will need eight triangle-counters. The 3C type cannot be
 assumed to
have no triangles. Time-savings shown are for example only and
 cannot
 be guaranteed.
Just to close, there is a further refinement of the technique.
 Because
the shape is five-way symmetrical, you in fact only have to
 count to
one, what could be more straightforward than that? This has
 the added
benefit of enabling the project to be broken up into even
 smaller and
 more manageable tasks.
One more thing, perhaps it's a trick question. All nodes may
 run STP so
all loops are removed, hence the correct answer could be zero.
BTW if you were wondering about the access area, it's not
 actually
 relevant.

2002-11-15 Thread Bruce Enders
Neil,
I assume you are considering connecting an FXS VIC port to a key system.
In that case you would connect to an FXO port on the key system. This
would qualify as a trunk circuit connecting the two telephone
switching devices. You are correct that this is not the best of possible
connections. Dialtone is intended to be used as a signal between a
machine, (a telephone switch) and a human listening to the telephone
handset. It does not do well from machine to machine. In the analog
world the best scenario for telephone trunk circuits is the EM
interface. But, your key system nay not support that.
Good luck with the FXS/FXO trunking. (Pay close attention to any calls
that get refused, as it could indicate that digits are getting lost
between the two systems).

2002-11-15 Thread Mike Martins
Without reading it, going on memory - it is saying the redistribute only the
routes specified or required (maybe will affect IBGP later etc), deny all
else.
One of the things that those labs require is to use a route-map or a
distribute list out/in (depending on the igp)for redistribution. It's up to
you which one you prefer.

Under Rip (routes u are receiving from ospf)
redistribute ospf x (metric) route-map test

route-map test permit 10
match ip address 1

access-list 1 permit x.x.x.x x.x.x.x (prefix you want to redis into rip etc)

I hope you were looking for something elementary. There is nothing really
complex about those labs.

 Backbone 1

CL: and the question is? seriously, R3 interface E0 is connected to the
backbone. The instruction is to prevent any sunets used inside the lab
network to be advertised into the backbone. So how do you do or not do that?

CL: filtering comes to mind. you have a number of options when doing so.
without going in depth into the requirement ( which is a nice one to
practice, if I do say so myself ) I would say that as you prepare for the
lab, you should be aware of any and all filtering options.

To be more specific - the lab is Darth Reid Section V under item # 4.

What exactly could be the configuration under this situations.

CL: that would be telling :-

CL: seriously, you have a number of choices and a number of knobs that are
applicable. how do you limit what routes are advertised into or out of an
protocol or an interface?

The only thing that I could think of is NOT to include redistribute
ospf 1 under RIP process. Is that all it needs or am I missing
 something else?

CL: be careful how your define interfaces in the OSPF process, for one
thing. be careful about how networks are placed into the RIP process. think
classful and it's implications.

CL: this should be enough to start your research.

 Thanks,
 Rajesh

ccnp switching - capus network design [7:57534]

A provided design of typical switch block:

L2 S1 L2 S2 (Layer2 switching)

   |\ /|

   L3 S3 --- L3 S4 (Layer 3 switching) - question is here
 \ /

My question is why the direct link between L3 S3 and L3 S4 is required?
Won't it be a bad design which would impose the potential of bridging loop?
Since L3 switching is used, HSRP and routing protocol will provide
enough route failure detection and redundancy function.

Is this a practical design in the real world?

You have to use it cause you need to restrict the local traffic in Switch

As you can specify S3/S4 as root/secondary bridge, there won't be bridging

hmm I dont think the router will drop the packet.. TCP has something called
path of MTU RFC 1191.

A quick defintion
The smallest MTU of any link on the current path between two hosts. This may
change over time since the route between two hosts, especially on the
Internet, may change over time. It is not necessarily symmetric and can even
vary for different types of traffic from the same host.
Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote:

Don't Fragment bit is set, the router sends back an ICMP Message:

The router also drops the packet.

By the way, in a related question - I've looked all through

I found this in RFC 3090: To avoid packet discards on the Frame
