Good point. I missed the part about choking his leased line. The only way
to stop that would be upstream as you stated.

You can lock your network down all you want but without getting help from
your provider you cannot keep packets from the Internet from entering your
WAN connection and eating your bandwidth.

I can assure you that no matter how locked down your network, anyone
anywhere in the world can flood your link, even if every packet that
reaches
your router/firewall is blocked. The only way to block the traffic from
reaching your WAN line is to block it at the provider level.

This is what the poster asked in the original question, how to keep
traffic
which he is already blocking from choking his leased line.

I used the following to prepare:

  Bruce Calsow
  CCIE Exam
  Lou Rossi's TR White Paper
  Boson Exams.
In addition, my experience as a CSE 2 in a TAC helped me.

The questions were from all around and there wasn't too much emphasis on

Now on to the real test, Lab. I would appreciate input from fellow

as to where to start for the Lab. I am going to read the Jeff Doyle

I am also thinking of setting up a Home Lab. Can fellow members advise
what

From what I've seen each ip attempts 15 know vulnerabilities in IIS.
Normally they scan an address once so trying to block it after the fact will
do you little good and could cause trouble with legitimate traffic. I'd
suggest you create a map class and policy map to block based on url. Here's
a link with the info. It's geared towards code but with a little
modification it'll stop nimda...

I did an install just over a week ago, and unfortunately let the customer
know about the PDM GUI. I've had three maintenance calls so far, all of
them
turned out to be config changes made by PDM.
One of the configs was hardly recognisable. I think there may be a button
which reads Install a random config.

The GUI seems good and at least it is https and (hopefully) only
accessible
from the inside interface. The problem seems to be the ease of access it
gives to people who would normally be scared off by a Pix CLI config.

I've not seen any security bulletins yet, but I would be surprised if they
don't start arriving within the coming months.

 Guy...yes, you're correct - I mapped port 23 on the outside to 23 on a

'feature' of 12.1 and higher to deny incoming on the outside interface.
Some firewall feature gets enabled that prevents inbound telnet to the
outside interface unless that 'conduit' is opened using nat inside source
static. I might downgrade to 12.0 tonight to see if that's true.

We all are humans first and we follow one religion which is humanity. If

I express my sincere gratitude towards all of them who have lost their

The only way to stop the traffic from arriving at your router is to have
your ISP place an access list on their router to stop http traffic. You
could place an access list on your router but the traffic would already have
used your bandwidth by then.

What Cisco product would you recommend for dial in/dial out capability on

We also have users that would like to dial out from their desktop without

it locks up. Any advice/input would be appreciated.

Re: Edge Security... [7:17864]

2001-08-30 Thread Dennis H

What you want is not possible. It you want to host servers such as dns and
smtp you will need to have those ports open to the outside, which will show
up on any portscan, and therefore not be completely invisible...

Otherwise your scan looks pretty good. I would close up pop3, ldap, and
1002 though...

Brandon Peyton wrote in message

 Hi,

I'm sure this has probably been covered in the archives, and what I have
searched isnt exactly what I need.

I've got a 2611 (12.0) and I'm trying to configure my router to provide me
with a secure network. 2 mailservers and 2 DNS machines and about 12
 workstations and 4 routers.

What I'm trying to do is make my network completely invisible to the
outside
world. When someone scans my IP range they will see nothing. However my
inside traffic should have no problems accessing anything anywhere.

I also want to block certain ports, for some reason my unix machines like
to
advertise ldap 389 and i want to completely block that from being seen
 outside.

Currently if you scan my network you'll see:
 |___22 ssh
 |___25 Antigen
 |___53 domain
 |___80 Executor
 |___ 110 pop3
 |___ 389 ldap
 |___ 1002

I would like to close certain ports on the cisco for outgoing traffic, and
make anyone portscanning me see nothing open.

I've spend a huge amount of time on CCO but still havent found what I
want.

 Any suggestions?

 Thanks
 Brandon

Here is the new CCIE 1 day lab! [7:16960]

2001-08-23 Thread Dennis H

I just got a copy of the new one day lab from someone who shall remain
nameless. As you can see the troubleshooting has been removed as we all
know. However an extra credit task has been added!

CCIE 1 Day Lab Exam - Morning

1. Describe the history of the papacy from its origin to the present day,
concentrating especially, but not exclusively, on its social, political,
economic, religious, and philosophical impact on Europe, Asia, America, and
Africa. Be brief, concise, and specific.

2. You have been provided with a razor blade, a piece of gauze, and a bottle
of Jack Daniels. Remove your appendix. Do not suture until your work has
been inspected. You have 10 minutes.

3. 2500 riot-crazed aborigines are storming the room. Calm them. You may use
any ancient language except Latin or Greek.

4. Create life. Estimate the differences in subsequent human culture if this
form of life had developed 500 million years earlier, with special attention
to its probable effect on the English Parliamentary System. Prove your
thesis.

5. Write a piano concerto. Orchestrate and perform it with flute and drum.
You will find a piano under your chair.

6. Based on your knowledge of their works, evaluate the emotional stability,
degree of adjustment, and repressed frustrations of each of the following:

a. Alexander of Aphrodisias

b. Ramses II

c. Gregory of Nicea

d. Iammurati

Support your evaluation with quotations from each man's work, making
appropriate references. It is not necessary to translate.

CCIE 1 Day Lab Exam - Afternoon

7. Estimate the sociological problems which might accompany the end of the
world. Construct an experiment to test your theory.

8. Define management. Define Science. How do they relate? Why? Create a
generalized algorithm to optimize all managerial decisions. Assuming an IBM
3270 with 257 Radio Shack and Panasonic terminals and each terminal to
activate your algorithm. Design the communications interface and all the
necessary control programs.

9. The disassembled parts of a high-powered rifle have been placed in a box
on your desk. You will also find an instruction manual printed in Swahili.
In 5 minutes, a hungry Bengal tiger will be admitted to the room. Take
whatever action you feel appropriate. Be prepared to justify your decision.

10. There is a red telephone on the desk beside you. Start WWIII. Report at
length on its socio-political effects, if any.

11. Take a position for or against truth. Prove the validity of your
position.

12. Explain the nature of matter. Include in your answer an evaluation of
the impact of the development of mathematics on science.

13. Sketch the development of human thought. Estimate its significance.
Compare this with the development of any other kind of thought.

Define the universe. Give three examples.

Thanks Mark!

Excellent solution... Number nine had me stumped a bit but I didn't have
the advantage of seeing the manual. I think I'm ready for the lab now!

Well, most of those are pretty self-explanatory, except # 9, which is a
trick question. I know I shouldn't be giving answers, but, what the 'ell:
Do NOT attempt to assemble the rifle using the Swahili manual (section c,
paragraph 4 of the manual requires 2 hours of prayer, which will put you
over your time limit). Instead, take the barrel of the rifle and club your
fellow labtakers over the head with it. Drag them to the door so the
Bengal
tiger will find them first. Continue with question 10 (which requires VoIP
 configuration).

Indeed I misspoke... as wan interfaces do not have mac addresses it does not
necessarily change each time a layer two connection changes, although it
could, depending on the topology and protocols in use...

Peter Slow wrote in message

 no it doesnt.

In fact under general circumstances those source macs are the MAC of the
router that was the last hop onto the lan.

Although i would love to, at the moment i dont have time to explain where
arp is used and how it works =)

Now, im guessing this 6509 has an MSFC (or MSFC2) am i correct?
If so it might be a bit easier to do what you want, cause ou are looking
at
IP addresses, in general, and i'm just making sure before going ahead and
giving guideance that you have that stuff =)

 Don't take this post personally.

 Totally disagree,

I'm finding that it's not just a vendor specific field, it's
technology, that you focus on, because regardless
of the vendor, there is only so many ways you can implement technology.
Don't just learn the vendor, learn the methodology of the technology that
 it
supports, and it will make life a lot easier.

Hey Jason,

Thanks for your input. I defined local0 the facility to be used both in the
Cat and in syslog.conf. I have the same config in the route-switch card
which is on the Sup module and that logs to the syslog server just fine. I
did check the messages file on the server to see if messages were going
there somehow but no luck. I also did a tcpdump on the syslog server
listening on port 514 and no syslog messages are arriving from the Catalyst,
only from the RSFC. It seems like a gateway issue or something but the
strange thing is I can ping and telnet from the Catalyst to the syslog
server. I'll keep digging but might have to call Cisco on this one...

Remote logging with Cat5509 [7:14188]

2001-07-30 Thread Dennis H

I'm trying to get remote logging enabled on a Cat5509 and could use some
advice. I have everything set up according to Cisco's site but messages do
not make it to the syslog server. The sc0 is configured with an ip and
gateway and I can ping and telnet to the syslog box. I have the severity
and facility set up properly. I do receive messages on the syslog server
from the RSFC but not from the Cat itself. The syslog server is on a
different subnet and vlan than the Cat management interface and all I can
figure is syslog messages aren't getting routed for some reason. But like I
said ping and telnet work... hmmm

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Dennis

I'm in Atlanta and preparing for the lab for early next year. Drop me a

This sounds like a great idea. Are there people in the Atlanta area that
would be interested in setting up a study group such as this? I am taking
the lab in mid-November and would be interested in getting together with
other folks that are preparing for the lab sometime in 2001.

i passed the exam with 71 marks and 70 was the passing WOW!!! too
 close...
i was expecting more marks but didn't get... so its my advice to all to
study hard for the exam as it is not so much easy as i thinked off.
I have learn by hard the CCNP2.0 course (cover to cover) and was
thinking that i can do the CCIE too for just covering my left over
topics that is ATM, FR, QoS, SRB, RSRB,DSLW+ etc...
but this didnt work the exam was tuff

I have studied from the following books... they are just great..

all in one lab study guide
 routing TCP/IP (jeff)
router bridges and swtices (second edition)
CCIE preparation (todd lamede). good book...

u can not cover one topic from one book so u have to read all the
 books

anyways the paper is cleared . either it should be of good marks
or just pass the one thing i know is that i cleared the paper and is
heading toword my CCIE lab thatz a loog jurney. as
the lab is in my opinion is 10 times harder then the written exam...
 (hope for high).

Thanks for the info. Indeed I meant packet size. Funny that you mention
cpu utilization. I found myself bickering with our Cisco reseller over
the
difference in cpu load between DES and 3DES. He said there was no
difference and I saw (somewhere) on CCO that it was nearly 50% more
processor intensive on a PIX using 3DES than on (ordinary) DES.

What do you mean by payload? I assume you mean packet size. I don't have
the exact figures but I the overhead on packet size is about 10%. The
overhead on the CPU utilization could be 100%, which might be what he is
 thinking of.

I'm currently in a debate with one of my co-workers about the payload

Here's a link which might be of use... It describes split horizon which
means a router will not advertise a route back out the same interface that
it was learned from. Poison reverse is similar except it WILL advertise the
route as unreachable back through the same interface it was learned from (as
opposed to not advertising it).

What do you mean by payload? I assume you mean packet size. I don't have
the exact figures but I the overhead on packet size is about 10%. The
overhead on the CPU utilization could be 100%, which might be what he is
thinking of.

I'm currently in a debate with one of my co-workers about the payload
increase that 3des encryption would cause. I am sensing I may be wrong
here, but I was thinking that the payload increase for 3des encryption
would
be a nominal 10% increase over non-encrypted traffic, however my cohort
believes that there would be 2x increase in payload.
Would anyone have a reasonable estimate, or better yet, hard data

The Cisco Career Certifications Agreement (Mark usage guidelines) states
(among a lot of other things)...
You may only use the mark for the highest level of certification you have
 received.
BUT, before you all decide that this means you should put CCIE only, the
career certifications they are talking about are CCNA, CCDA, CCNP and
 CCDP. Not CCIE.
Don't forget that the CCIE has been around a lot longer than the CCNP/DP
etc. The CCNP/DP are not prerequisites for the CCIE, and although there
is
an awful lot of overlap in the material, the CCIE isn't really just an
extra step up (particularly from the CCDP).
My opinion would be that you should NOT put CCNA, CCNP or CCDA, CCDP -
that happens to be against the marks agreement, and anyway it's redundant
(except perhaps for HR scanning purposes).
But CCIE, CCNP, CCDP? Sure. They are different certs, and one doesn't
 imply the other.

With the death (or extended delay) of CCIE Design, I think that the CCDP
is
sufficiently different that it can/should be used alongside of CCIE.

CCNP on the otherhand flows directly into CCIE RS.

I've had this discussion before in the NOS world, MCSE/MCP - CBE/CBS -
 CNE/CNA.

and the greatest reason for using both is that HR often don't know how
 certs
are achieved or their order. Therefore, to allow HR people to catch the
keyword they're looking for, both junior/senior certs are often listed.

Now, on a business card - I only use the senior initials, but on a
resume -
 that's HR stuff again.

On an email list where supposedly everybody is clued into the cert tracks
(imagine a name like groupstudy) then I think I would also only use the
 senior initials.

But personal taste takes it in the end. Some people could presume that
their posts on this list as a legitimate form of advertising their
abilities - again a HR thing.

  then you most likely
studied a lot of socio/political/economic theory and
  their application. If
you studied a science or engineering, then
  high-level calculus was the
order of the day, in terms of expressing events in
  mathematical terms. If
it was computer science, then a whole lot of
  abstract programming theory.

But regardless of what you studied, I think it is
  universally true that
college graduates with whatever degree then plunge
  into their careers and
rarely use the actual skills that they picked up in
  college. Barring those
who have entered academia, how many times does the
  typical grad with an
English degree get the opportunity to do an literary
   analysis of Elizabeth
vs. Victorian poetry? How many real-world graduates
  of economics, in their
day-to-day working life, actually have to whip out
  supply/demand curves and
calculate marginal utility? Even the engineering
  graduates (historically
one of the most applied of all the college
subjects), how many times do they
really have to derive out a 40-line thermodynamics
  multivariable calculus
formula using just pencil and paper, and within 15
  minutes?

Ah but, college administrators and the pundits of
  education will stress,
what make the college experience so valuable is not
  the subject matter per
se, but rather the base level disciplining and
training of the mind that is
the ultimate goal. It is not the memorization of
  the political theories of
Plato that is important, rather it is the improved
  cultural exposure, the
openness to different philosophies, and the ability
  to conceive of and
defend a particular thought. It is not the ability
  to quickly derive and
calculate the eigenvectors of a linear algebra
  matrix that is important,
rather it is the improved grasp and understanding of
  abstract concepts that
is the real prize. In short, you college grads
  are hired not for the
precise subject matter that they studied, but
  because they have demonstrated
enhanced thought processes and the ability to
  quickly learn whatever skills
  they need for their career.

Having said that, I believe that the CCIE is
  evolving into a similar role.
CCIE's are prized by employers not because they can
  type a config for and
troubleshoot a OSPF NBMA frame-relay network without
  using subinterfaces and
while still electing a DR/BDR in less than an hour,
  typing at 150
words-per-minute. Rather they are prized because in
  the course of their
study, they have substantially improved their
  knowledge of networking
fundamentals and have developed a systematic and
  logical method of fixing
  problems.

Now, some readers out there might take exception to
  the above paragraph and
point out that there are some CCIE's who have
  developed more than a
superficial knowledge of networking, and obtained
  their 4-digit-number just

I don't believe you can do ISL trunks over a 10MB link period... and a 2523

 Good Morning,

 My question is as follows:

For my home lab is it possible to run ISL trunking on a 10 Mbps link.
I
know that it is supposed to be 100 Mbps, but I could swear I read that it
can run at 10 Mbps speeds, its just not fast enough to use it on a
production network. Is there any truth to this?

Second item on my mind this morning. I picked up a 2523 router which
will be coming to my door step within the next few days. I was told it
can
perform as a Terminal Server, does anyone know what type of cabling I
would
need for that? I know I should just buy a 2509 or 2511 but that's not
practical. Any suggestions would help as always.

Third item. Fatkid.com has some good practice labs, can anyone
recommend any other great lab scenarios without spending lots of mula?

 Thanks,

 JC
