ISP related question

2001-03-13 Thread JP

All,

A simple question for those who have related exprience/knowledge:
If we want to switch to another ISP, how soon we need to finish our
readdressing?
I understand as our current address is assigned by our current ISP, we need
to give back this address and migrate to a new range coming from our new
ISP, we definitely want to how sufficient time for this process, just want
to know how long most of the ISP allows for this kind mirgration. We have a
/16 address currently.

Thanks

JP

Re: ISP related question

2001-03-14 Thread JP

I made a mistake in the original email, we own the /16, but there are a
bounch of /24 which we got from our ISP. We are not globally routing the
/16, so this makes the story different. We just need to replace those /24s
from the new ISP, probably get something continious. I guess the big concern
is DNS, we will need the change the active time to about 10mins and wait
till it spreads out before the actual cut-over, so that our down time will
be minimized.

I know, but that will take a multination company many years to do that.
Yes, we do not have DHCP.

Dark Fiber question [7:769]

2001-04-16 Thread JP

All,

A question about normal practice of renting dark fiber.
We have two sites about 60 miles apart, each site has a cisco GSR. We are
going to connect them together with OC-48 PoS interface cards(haven't bought
cards yet).
My question is, should I ask for a pair of dark fiber from the carrier or
just ask for an OC48 sonet connection between these two sites?
I guess the dark fiber gives us less impact by the carrier's network, but we
would not be able to use any APS, as no ADM from the carrier will be
involved. Unless, we want to buy our own ADM, which is not likely to happen
at all.

This is the first time we run into this kind of setup, we need some
experience/suggestion before going any further.

Thanks
JP

This is exactly what we are considering right now. I think we need to bargin
with the teleco based the estimation of our bandwidth. We can always get the
dark fiber when requirement comes, it just a matter of how soon and how
much.

> David and Andyh both brought up good arguements for leasing from a
carrier.

Definitely, unless we could get two pairs, which is not practical for an
end user.

Based on you guys great inputs, I think we probably will intend to rule out
the the dark fiber solution, it is kind of like rent a backbone from the
carrier, if the carrier heavily oversuscribes the backbone(through ATM
etc.), they are unlikely give the end users a very cost-effective price.

Bruce or anyone has been in the picnic last year, could you guys let us know
how things like in the past, one day is not a whole lot of time of doing
something, when you finish hooking everything up, it is lunch time, after
lunch time.., sunset already... :)
got to be a great chance to know nice folks from the list. Do other regions

BGP community string question [7:6340]

2001-05-29 Thread JP

All,

When matching community string in BGP routes, it seems to be different than
matching as-path,
I have seen expression(new format in cisco) like 701: * to match any strings
starting with 701, in as-path term, it should be written like " 701: .*"
I saw the 701:* from juniper manual, did not find anything similar on CCO

So if there is a "701:*[3-4]2" expression, what does it match?
I guess 701:32, 701:42 are obvious, anything else does it match?

Thanks

BGP PfxRcd [7:29331]

2001-12-16 Thread JP

All,

I have three BGP routers learning full table from different ISPs, they are
fully
meshed IBGP peers.
If I do a "show ip bgp summary" on one of the routers:

Neighbor V ASMsgRcvd MsgSent TblVer InQ OutQ Up/Down
State/PfxRcd
10.200.255.22 4 1 3239033 1044612 604463300 1d02h
50645
10.100.255.22 4 1 730890 957516 604463300 20:18:35
59854
157.x.x.x 4 701 44859226 735704 604463100 5w0d
103907

The other two routers have similar output.

All three routers are learning about 103-104K routes from EBGP sessions, I
thought all prefixes learned from ebgp should be forwarded to all IBGP peers
but seems to me they only forward about 50% of these prefixes to their IBGP
peers.

What am I missing here?

Thanks

Natting problem...help!!! [7:66111]

2003-03-24 Thread JP
I have the following scenario

0---0--telnet application
  network3network 1 network 2
   lan wan link

I need all hosts on network 3 to telnet to my "telnet application"
Problem is network 3 and network 2 both have the same ip range.

My question is the following:
Is there any way i can perform natting to allow network 3 hosts to telnet to
the application and use an ip address other than the one assigned to the
application as the destination address???

Any ideas appreciated

Thanks

I disagree with you on this comment. There are coaches and players. In order
to pass the lab you will have to know the stuff and be able to type it in
time, some people may just do feel comfortable under some pressure, I am not
saying this is the case for anyone for sure, but to me, not being a CCIE
just means not having that number, period. You do not have to be a world
champion to coach your team to win it. I am not saying who claims to be a
coach is certainly capable of being a good one, but we just cannot logically
rule that out.

IMHO, the owner of the list owns the list. The owner has the freedom to give
some kind of privileges to anybody.

That said, I think no matter how much free stuff is in there, it is an
underestimation of people's intelligence claming that this kind of posting
is non-business related. People open mails everyday know this for sure.

Just my .02

Re: 7206 boot-image [7:25866]

2001-11-12 Thread JP

Duncan,

I did my research before posting the question. I just could not find
anywhere on CCO says if the boot image has to match the main IOS, thanks for
your confirmation about that. To me , if I use any old boot-image, it may
not recognize some of the new cards, but as long as it brings up the fast
ethernet, I can always load a newer IOS later.

Thanks
JP
