How to connect 3548 switches [7:1889]

2001-04-25 Thread Jeff Walzer

I need to connect two 3548XL switches that are on separate floors. The
distance is around 100 feet between the switches. Can I connect these
two switches using either a 1000BaseSX module or the 1000BaseT module
(not sure if the distance is too far for this one)?

If I am able to connect the switches using the 1000BaseSX module, I am
limited to 100MB or will I get 1GB connectivity?

Thanks,
Jeff Walzer

CiscoWorks 2000 vs. CiscoWorks for Windows

2001-03-15 Thread Jeff Walzer

We have a Frame Relay network that connects 8 remote locations. Our
locations have a combo of 3548 and 2924 Cisco switches. There are only two
IT guys in one location and we want to be able to monitor each location
using a protocol analyzer. Does either CiscoWorks 2000 or CiscoWorks for
Windows allow this capability? Or do I have to go with a solution from
EtherPeek or NAI's Sniffer products?

We are interested in seeing traffic, utilization, problems (errors,
collisions, etc) on all of our LANs from one central location.

Thanks,
Jeff

Connecting another vendor's switch to Cisco's

2001-02-15 Thread Jeff Walzer

We have a partner company that needs to do some heavy duty testing relating
to the network. We currently have them on a Cisco 3548XL switch. They would
like to buy a generic switch that has some gigabit ports and then create a
channel to the Cisco switch with 4 ports. Would this be possible? How does
Cisco's equipment play wth others?

Trunk question between 2620 and 3548XL

2000-12-20 Thread Jeff Walzer

I have a 3548XL switch and a 2620 router with the IOS Plus loaded.

The IP address of the 2620 is 10.10.1.1 and the IP address of the 3548 is
10.10.1.2 (VLAN1)

I have created two VLANs on the 3548XL, VLAN10 (10.10.10.1) and VLAN20
(10.10.20.1). Port 48 on the 3548 connects to the 2620's FE port.

On the 2620 I have created the following sub interfaces:
To Trunk VLAN1:
int f0/0.1
encap isl 1
ip add 10.10.1.2 255.255.255.0

To Trunk VLAN10
int f0/0.10
encap isl 10
ip add 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0

To Trunk VLAN20
int f0/0.20
encap isl 20
ip add 10.10.20.1 255.255.255.0

On the 3548 on int f0/48 I enter the following to start trunking:
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk encap isl

As soon as I do this I can no longer ping the router from the switch and
vice-versa. When I set port 48 on the 3548 back to access mode I can ping
again.
I think I am confused about the IP addresses to set. For example the
router's IP is 10.10.1.1 and the switch IP (VLAN1) is 10.10.1.2.
When I create the subinterface for VLAN1 on the router what IP address
should I assign to the subinterface (as well as for sub interfaces f0/0.10
and f0/0.20)?

Switch preference (network topology) question

2000-11-28 Thread Jeff Walzer

By next year our office will have over 50 people. This does not include
people who will be in our building and working for other companies. That
number will be around 15 and it will grow. Basically, our building hosts our
company and various other companies and I am part of a two-man IT staff that
runs everything for all companies. Currently, we are using three 3548 XL
switches and a 2620 for interVLAN routing.

In this scenario, would it be feasible (and cost-effective) for me to roll
out a 5000 (or a 5505) with a GBIC module and an RSM to take the load off
the 2620 (which also does routing for our Frame Relay network)?

Jeff

VLAN default gateway question

2000-11-15 Thread Jeff Walzer

I have a question concerning the default gateway for PCs when connecting to
a 3548XL switch that has VLANs. I have a 3548XL switch that has 3 VLANs
(VLAN1 is for the 10.10.1.x subnet, VLAN2 is for the 10.10.2.x, and VLAN3 is
for subnet 10.10.3.x) configured. The 3640 router has an address of
10.10.1.1 and sub interfaces for 2.x and 3.x. For PCs on the subnets 2.x and
3.x what should their default gateway be, 10.10.1.1 or 10.10.3.1?

Subinterface question

2000-11-06 Thread Jeff Walzer

Our internal network has 10 subnets that can be utilitized (10.10.1.x -
10.10.10.x). The router IP address is 10.10.1.1.

When I create a subinterface for 10.10.2.1 what is the metric for the
10.10.2.x subnet to get to the 10.10.1.x subnet?

Being that it is the same router will it be 1 or does each subinterface
increment the metric by 1 thereby making the metric 2 for each subinterface?

How do I assign an IP address to a switch cluster?

2000-10-16 Thread Jeff Walzer

I want to cluster three 3548XL switches together using GBICs. I set up the
first switch to be the command switch using 192.168.1.1 as the IP address.
When setting up the other two switches do I assign them IP addresses (ex:
192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3) as well or not?

Looking at the documentation it says to just plug the switches in and then
join the cluster but when you plug the switches in they walk you through the
config prompts to set up the switch. Should I skip these prompts that set
the switch up originally?

Layer 3 (2948G-L3) switching question

2000-10-03 Thread Jeff Walzer

I have 4 remote offices that have the 2620 router installed but need the

be a good solution? These remote offices will have various projects going on
using people from other companies and I want to keep their traffic separate

Video conferencing over IP question

2000-08-28 Thread Jeff Walzer

We are building a Frame Relay network from scratch. We have 2 main offices
and around 8 remote offices. For equipment the four main offices will have
3640s and the 4 remote offices will have 2620s. Two of the main offices will
100 + users while the other two will have 25 + users. The remaining remote
offices will have 5-10 users. We currently run 3 ISDN lines into each office
for video conferencing and the phone bills are quite expensive.

We are looking into running video conferencing over the Frame network and my
question concerns what switch I should install in the offices. Right now I
am looking at the 3548 XL at two of the main offices with 2924 XL switches
for the rest of the offices. If video conferencing over IP becomes a reality
in 6 months I was thinking about adding a 5000 series switch at the main
site to have a core/distribution layer with the 3548 XLs serving as the
access layer. I am concerned about the 2924 XLs in the four remote offices.
Should I look into the 3524 XL series for the remote offices to be able to
handle the video conferencing traffic?

Thanks,
Jeff

VOIP and QOS questions

2000-07-05 Thread Jeff Walzer

We currently have 4 offices, 2 in the Pittsburgh area and 2 in California
(one is Saratoga and one being built in San Fran). The plan is to connect
each one through a dedicated T1 line for redundancy and VOIP and video
conferencing purposes. I was planning on installing 3548 XL switches in all
of the offices (the San Fran office and one of the Pittsburgh offices will
have close to 100 people while the other two offices will have around 30
people). The corporate offices will use the other two offices for Internet
access. The questions I have are as follows:

* What type of router should be placed in the offices? I was thinking
1720 for the small corporate offices and the 3640 for the two larger offices
as I believe this will provide us with the performance we need for VOIP and
video conferencing over IP
* Are the 3548 XL switches good enough? I read a recent review in
Network World that said QOS is lacking in the 3548 XL switch

Cisco PIX - any good?

2000-06-16 Thread Jeff Walzer

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the Cisco PIX firewall box?
I just come into a situation in which we will all of the sudden have
multiple offices throughout the US. A majority of these offices will have 10
users or less because they will be executives. Our office is currently using
the Watchguard Firebox II as our firewall/VPN solution. The problem is that
Watchguard does not offer any solutions for smaller offices. We will
probably install a frame relay network between offices for security and
performance reasons (too many problems with DSL and cable modems for the
time being). We have a Cisco 1720 router and in all probability we will
install Cisco routers for the other offices. With that in mind, would adding
the PIX firewall combined with the VPN capability of the Cisco routers
possibly be the solution?

this: Will I have to enable a routing protocol on the routers to enable
multicasting?

Passed CCDA!

Just got back to work after taking the CCDA test this morning.

Not that bad of a test. I scored 843 and did better that I thought I would.
Had 2 scenarios that were pretty tricky. What I did was write as much info
as I could under headings like Protocols, Connectivity, New Apps, etc., as I
read each case study. This really helped me when I had to answer the simpler
case study questions as I could glance at the sheet I created instead of
pour over the exhibits. However some questions forced me to read and reread
the case studies a few times as the questions were challenging.
