The rack is usually determined by money , however I can tell you that
Mr.Ellis will sell you a complete rack with what you need and all the
stuff you will need will be there.
I have known Brad for about 3 years or so and we used to sell in the same
markets and I never saw one bad word about him or his products.
I doubt he will have the cables all labeled port to port (grin)but the rack
would be complete.
Also you will see many different racks out there, take mine it's bunch of
Cisco , Bay . 3com and Olicom stuff and soon some IBM iron.
Why, because I got the extra stuff real cheap and free. If it will run OSPF
and or BGP I will add it.
So many racks you will see will be different but they all will have the same
core stuff

cat 5000
2 ISDN
1 Token Ring
1 Frame switch
2 2621
etc

RE: Why do some TFTP sessions take a lot longer [7:35006]

2002-02-15 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

Ok all '
thanks for all the ideas..
All routers are 1601, all running the same ver of IOS.
I have tested all the Eth ports on routers in fashion by TFTP'ing on the
same laptop the same image with the same cable and all the routers do the
task within few seconds of each other.I attribute the slight diff here due
to very minor inconsistancies within the Eth interfaces and or the NIC on
the laptop.
All routers are directly connected via a Xover cable right into the PC.
The lab in question had some pretty tired ISA NICs. And that was the lab
that had the weird numbers..
In both classes this week, the exact same scenario produced pretty much
normal results with about a 7 second varience across the 6 routers. BUT all
both sets of PC's had newer PCI 10 /100 nics..
Also I was talkng with a friend of mine who works on WAN managment software
project and the application does kinda realtime hardware and software
monitoring.
He was telling me that he has had nic cards that can take up to 3 seconds to
respond to his app whereas the normal response time is .2 of a second.
Ok I know .2 of a sec is a lifetime on a wan but that time includes the time
to pull the info from the PC and whack it thru this app and a DB etc..
But the interesting point is when the slow response machines had the NIC
swapped out it . the lethargy went away and the machines resonded in the
normal time frame for the app...

This bring's up a couple of points.
I. Slow NICS did a driver re-install fic this
2. Taking the NIC out of the #1 PCI slot (which is usually a shared slot
help.
Both question could not be answered as the fix is always to replace the NIC.
However is there a freeware app out there that can test a NIC out for thru
put.
AS over the years I have had servers which give me probs like this and I
want to eliminate the NIC, but swapping them out is not a viable test method
as then the server has to be taken down.
But if the NCI is slow then I don't mind doing the swap

Re: hiding an computer ( ip address ) using acces [7:34992]

2002-02-09 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

Are you trying to limit remote access from outside the network or from
within the network (LAN)
From outside the network you can use an access list but the best way would
be to use the security policy on your OS. AKA password etc
If you are using win 9xx without a 3rd party app your kinda hosed.
Ditto for physical security also unless you disable the floppy and CDrom.
As Howard would say
What problem are you trying to solve..

There is a way to hide the IP by having a oneway patch cable but that only
lets the machine recieve but not transmit and because it does not transmit
nothing no arps etc and no other device can see it ..
But also because it's mute it cannot announce itself either therefore it
cannot use any networks services etc. it can just listen only
kinda like taking the number off your house, no one knows where you are ,you
can't get a phome installed or any mail delivered as you have no address..
Oz
I am adding a computer to my network that i do not want accessible via
 network
to anyone but myself. Can someone suggest best ways to do this, is this
possible on the router level via access list?

RE: collissions and the bigger picture [7:34896]

2002-02-09 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

So collisons are head on wrecks and if serial could have a wreck it would
be just a rear end deal .. LOL I bit at one time

Re the cable stuff
The Media Access Control mechanism is normally implemented in hardware or in
a combination of hardware and software. The primary purpose of the MAC is to
share the media in a reasonable way. Both the CMTS and the Cable Modem
implements protocols to do

Ranging to compensate for different cable losses. It is essential that the
upstream bursts from all Cable Modems are received in the Head-End at the
same level. If two Cable Modems transmit at the same time, but one is much
weaker than the other one, the CMTS will only hear the strong signal and
assume everything is okay. If the two signals are same strength, the signal
will garble and the CMTS will know a collision occurred.

Ranging to compensate for the different cable delays. The size of a CATV
network calls for fairly large delays in the millisecond range.

Assigns frequencies etc. to the Cable Modems. The Cable Modem first listens
to the downstream to collect information about where and how to answer. The
it signs on to the system using the assigned upstream frequency etc.

Allocate the time-slots for the upstream.

It is impossible to give more detailed information about the MAC, without
going into the specific standards. This is one of the areas that are most
closely tied to the specific standard.

Go to www.fatkid.com
Autonomous switching is used in larger multi-slot routers. Autonomous
switching allows the switch blade or module to perform local fast switching
without placing the packet on the backplane unless it is necessary to do so.

Silicon switching uses ASICs, (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) to
perform the switching function. This allows for many operations to be
completed in a single clock cylce so performance is very fast. ASICs can be
limiting however, since if there are too many instructions burned ontot the
chip adding functionality later can be impossbile without replacing the chips.

From a PRI perspective the PRI's tend to work better with the telco

does it have to be either 50 or 62.5 cabling end-to-end ?

RE: Console Port Problem - Help ! [7:25201]

2001-11-04 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

I have had this with an odd router and it's just a matter of playing with
the cable.. A little wiggle here and there.
I checked one console port out and the wires inside were a tad bent ..
Also I have had some switches 19xx give me a wacked out ATHQ error and yet
on another PC they work fine..
When I go back to the original PC just use another serial port and it's
fine..
And yet Serial 1 will work fine with a router and serial 2 work with a
switch on the same PC SO go figure ...
The problem follows the PC
..
Like other said get terra Term pro. and maybe try another PC ..and maybe
even NT or 2k as windoze 9x can be funky

I made a DOS boot disk with kermit loaded which negates all the windoze
errors and if that does not work them I know it's a bad port on the router /
switch
Oz
sNIP
The symptom is as folows :
Output from the router on the console screen will be seen, but anything
which is typed in will not be seen

RE: Problem booting a 3620 [7:25200]

2001-11-04 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

Try pulling out all the cards etc and flash and RAM. If it still will not
boot. Maybe the Boot roms are bad..
Check that the boot roms are in the rightslots..
I THINK they are FW1 or FS1 about 5/8th's of an inch square. But be careful
as they only go in one way .
One corner is cut off .

You should be able to order new rom from Cisco they usually give them for
free you pay the shipping..

11.1(19)AA is I THINK the latest ROM
BOOT-3600= this is the part number.
It's a long shot but it may work
Your router has the earlier version on the boot ROM

Oz

My father gave me a 3620 for my home lab but I'm having troubles with it.
I've searched CCO but have not found anything useful. Any suggestions? Here
is the output when I try going into the ROMMON:

Call verisign. The engineers there are fantastic..

You may have just got a BAD reseller,, the same could easily happen with
Cisco..

The #1 reason I like checkpoint is flexability..
And easy to manage and easy to manage remote users.

Volume II covers BGP, multicast, and IPv6. I didn't buy it because I have
other books on those topics.

RE: How to config the catalyst 1200 and crack its pwd! [7:24394]

2001-10-28 Thread Ozzie Sutcliffe

Another question: How do I crack the pwd??
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_6000.html stolen from there

here is another way
Software and Password Recovery By Shorting Pins on the Catalyst 1200
Use this procedure if the software and password recovery procedure fails and
your Catalyst 1200 does not reboot running software. This procedure is
similar to accessing ROM Monitor (ROMMON) mode on a router. Essentially,
this procedure provides you with enough switch functionality to re-download
the software to the switch.

Remove the cover of the switch.

Locate pins JP17 and short them. The pins can be found to the right of all
the LEDs and to the left of the RESET button.

After the pins are shorted, reboot the switch. The switch will come back
with the boot prompt.

Once you are at the boot prompt, you can define an IP address using the
ifconfig command and download NMP and DMP software.

If these steps do not work, you probably need new hardware.

RE: Working with a consulting company [7:24224]

2001-10-27 Thread Ozzie sutcliffe

Depends
Depends
Depends
June Allyson ( Grin )

You could be working for a large provider providing scribbled out diagrams
on a legal pad trying to meet sales goals.

You could be working in a large corp doing long term design management BW
allocations etc..meetings meetings and more meetings to decide on meeetings
You could be in a small corp doing last mile stuff
There is really no hard and fast answer..

As a rule of thumb the smaller the company whether it be consulting or staff
the scale is smaller but the path is broader..
IE. Nothing bigger than 36xx and 6xxx
The larger company the scale is bigger but the path is more narrow..
Nothing less than ATM and huge switches.
Best way is to grill the corp and ask to talk to some of the other
engineers..

When I did consulting for reseller , it was a little of everything and on
the bigger jobs I did rack and stack and got the boxes to talk to each other
then the big guns came in and did all the REAL work (sigh).

thats why I do training.. I do it all now LOL

Re: Configuring hyperterminal to configure a Cisco [7:24211]

2001-10-27 Thread Ozzie sutcliffe

Go here you can terraterm all flavors...
http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm
Hypeterm is just plain ugly , after a while the text wiil flow off the gui,
across the monitor and all over the floor.
NT may beat you up doing break commands..
Your laptop may not even have break key..
Terraterm does the break thu the software and it has a really cool cut and
paste feature..
And it's free

Re: what is feature license? [7:24220]

2001-10-27 Thread Ozzie sutcliffe

The feature sets are not in addition too but rather replacement of.

IP feature sets runs IP
need BGP then you need IP Plus
Need IP and IPX then you nedd IP IPX and so on..
Out with old IOS in with the new IOS.
Watch for flash and ram requirements on the routers as the 12xx are getting
kinda microsoftee..
Soon the Cisco with have the old NT question..
Q. TO increase performance on IOS

A Add more RAM
B Add even more RAM
C Add flash
D Add even more flash
E all of the above

Heh
