RE: Weird sniffer issue... [7:22273]

2001-10-05 Thread Puckett, Larry (TIFPC)

I'm certainly not one of the experts on this list, but have seen this before
on a couple of our LAN segments. It turned out that the server group was
using the same IP address on two different NICs on the same server. This was
a process recommended by one of the Windows operating systems to create
redundancy and load sharing at the server level. After an extended trial and
error process, I believe the resolution was to change to a different
manufacturer of NICs. Something about the binding software of something

Okay I know that you may be getting sick of my sniffer questions since this
is the second one this week, but I've never seen this before, so here goes.

I'm using good ole' Etherpeek and while monitoring a network I started
getting duplicate IP address errors. After further investigation Etherpeek
shows the MAC address of the router as the conflicting MAC. This is
happening on several servers supposedly having a duplicate address as the
router interface on the same segment. I have never ran into this problem
before, so I thought that I would ask the experts. What is causing this to
happen and why?

I'm starting to think that computers are the work of the devil! Routers and
switches to a lesser extent...

TIA,
Eric

I'm no history expert, especially foreign history, but I'm confident in my
memory that there is no way that Lybia was innocent when we attacked them.
In fact, Lybia quit participating so blatantly in sponsoring terrorism after
that attack and serves as a good example of what language that terrorists
understand. The fact that you could state that we bombed innocents in that
example discredits every other point you have made

I know this is off-topic and long, but I'll give it a shot anyway...

Hello all, and much respect to everyone on this list.
This is my first time writing to this list (as far as I can remember),
although
I have observed it for awhile. Most topics seem to be out of my Cisco
range,
but I do enjoy the information that crosses the list and I do respect
everyone's
opinion as their own. Terrible tragedies have been suffered today, and many
lives are now changed forever. As Priscilla mentioned, the damage to
families
is irreparable. However, to think that "if God existed, this incredible
loss of life
wouldn't have occurred in the first place", is to say that that the devil
does not
exist. God is very real and He does exist. Unfortunately, the devil is
very real also,
and he does exist. Many people think that the devil is a mythical figure
that has
nothing to do with current events, so they equate God with all of the good
and the bad
things. The fact is, that God does love us all, and it is not his desire
that anyone of us
should perish, but we all have an enemy, and that is the devil. Every
opportunity he gets,
he seeks to devour. God works through his people and He is patient.
Tragedies do
occur, but the blame should go to the devil, not God. When we pray, our
prayers do make
a difference as God hears our prayers. The "we" that I'm talking about is
those that believe
on His son, Jesus Christ. There is a spiritual war going on that must not
be overlooked.
Todays events are part of this war. The bible says it all. These are the
"end times" that we
are in. It is my hope that these tragedies will lead the rest of us to
realize that we do need a
saviour, and He is Jesus Christ. Please check Romans 14:10, 12/Ephesians
2:8,9/
Romans 3:23/Romans 6:23/ and Romans 10:9,10. Also, the book of Revelations
tells much
about the end times (which we've been in for quite some time). Prayer,
along with using all
available opportunities to help (like donating blood), goes a long way.
Thank you.

Craig.

RE: Can you pass CCNP w/o having Cisco gears? [7:18310]

2001-09-03 Thread Puckett, Larry (TIFPC)

Can't help but to add a different light to this. Although I agree with all
that Dan has said, the tone is a growing event on this discussion group.
It's natural for long time members of the group to progress in their
knowledge and become the contributors rather than the receivers of the good
service that the group was created to provide. The friendships and
information exchange that come from having grown together is an added
benefit to these members but the natural progression should include the
nurturing that they all received when they originally joined. I believe we
all were pointed to this group when we began our studies for our CCNA and
that there are still many that are referred all the time. Surely many of the
more established in their careers can remember when they first became
interested in the field and were looking for some starting points. And just
as surely many of them began their journey with limited equipment
availability and only books to turn to, knowing that the certification was a
primary step towards access to that equipment.

My point isn't that people should move on once that they have achieved their
original goals and more, but to always remember that there are many that are
just starting their pursuits of a wide range of goals and have been referred
to this site by someone who thinks we can help.

I should also express my gratitude to the whole range of discussion
(beginner to technical gurus) that this group provides. I tune in daily to
see what I can learn. You have been a great help in my career.

Thank You, very much.

Look I know given enough of a mind you can do anything from books.
The real question is what have you got when you do pass it?
Not much, the knowledge wont stick, the brain doesn't work that way. Reading
a book on driving a car may give you the answers to the test but it wont
make you a good driver. Long term memory is action and emotion driven thats
why its hard forget that night you finally get a complicated BGP scenario to
work on your router lab, or fight though the problems at 2 AM of getting
that new RSM to work, and will never ever forget driving an hour in the snow
to fix a problem someone else caused on a clients network because they
didn't know what they were doing, yeah they thought they could slide by.
Is practical experience enough? No you need a lab either at work, home, or
with a group cause some things just have to be done to be understood. To be
the best is the only "exam" any of us should be interested in passing. So
can you pass the test without a lab? Depends on which "test" you are really
trying to pass.

Good luck
Dan

The answer is Yes, you can be a paper CCNP.

I just turned CCNP last week and I have never touched a router before. Have
never logged into a router, not used any router simulator software. (Yes I
know how a router looked like from the pictures I've seen.) Neither did i
cheat by using brain dumps.

All the information for passing the exams only came from the 4 Sybex books
(routing, switching, support, RA) Not trying to be proud here, but a paper
CCNP is possible.

Will take my written CCIE soon. As for the lab exam, hmm... we shall see...

Also, the question is structured to assume that we are only configuring a
router. As techs, we spend a lot of time troubleshooting with time
pressures. Knowing this stuff as well as Jeremy describes not only helps you
keep your focus instead of stopping to use the calculator but increases
accuracy and saves time as well.

You use the binary method to actually understand what is going on in the
background. I like it because now after all of the hand written binary
conversions I've done, I can subnet, summarize routes, and write access
lists that permit/block a range all in my head in no time at all. I myself
would not want to get caught in a meeting where the head boss asks "what
mask would give me x amount of host and subnets or what would summarize all
of these routes" and respond with " I have to go get my computer to do
that". I think he would be much more impressed with a response calculated in
my head or on paper right there with a clear explanation why this is the way
it is. You learn that from binary. Use the subnet calculator as a quick fix
or check. No offense, this is just my opinion.

Subnet [7:15306]

This is a study group so I have a question for which I need
some education.
I am not looking for a flame war, just education. The
question I have is of
what use is the binary math method of subnetting as compared
to just using a
program that does subnetting? If the point to the exercise
is to produce a
plan for subnetting that can then be entered into each
device on the network
or into a DHCP server setup, what else is achieved by doing
this manually?
It seems to me that the point is not the journey, but the
arrival at the
destination. Indeed arrival as quickly as possible, with the
least source of
error. As Cisco even says; "The purpose of this tool is to
provide a way to
calculate IP subnetting which is fast, easy, and error free.
Doing such
calculations manually is time consuming and susceptible to
common
mathematical mistakes, especially in conversions between
binary and decimal
numbers." So what is it I am not understanding?

hmmm - interesting one. there is not really any provision for failover that
I know of for T-1 size lines. Higher bandwidth lines can be procured from
your telco with APS (Automatic Protection Switching) on SONET or MSP
(Multiplex Switching Protoection) on SDH whereby you effectively get a
backup line with literally milli-second failover in case of failure.

HSRP is *not* an option as this is for Broadcast (ie LAN) network use only

saying the above there may well be a product out there to do what you want,
although I don't recall ever seeing anything like this

Decnet to SNA [7:2961]

2001-05-02 Thread Puckett, Larry (TIFPC)

Hi all, I have a challenge that I could use some good advice to design.

I have a present topology of a DEC box that has a SNA gateway installed to
translate Decnet to SNA and the send through a modem eliminator (to provide
clock at 9.6k :~}) to an IBM3745 FEP. Those FEP services are being moved to
our central location in another city but the DEC services are staying put.
There is a Cisco routed network already in place between these two sites
with a 2502 on one end and a 3640 on the other. The 3640 is at the central
data center and has an OSA attachment to the mainframe. As I understand it,
OSA is layer 3 and depends on IP addresses but Decnet's addressing is layer
2 using the MAC address. The DEC box is Ethernet connected but the 2502 at
that site is a Token Ring router. There is existing bridging between Token
Ring and Ethernet segments at that site but I'm not sure if the DEC segment
is already bridged.

What I think I would like to do is to remove that SNA gateway from that DEC
box and depend on the LAN/WAN to get Decnet to the central site. I'm pretty
sure that the two routers will do this but once we get the information to
the central site, I'm not sure how to get it out of the router and into the
mainframe. We have thought of putting an SNA gateway at the central site and
basically recreating what they had up there but I'm hoping that we can use
the OSA instead.

I do understand that the configuration of the routers is more than just
enabling Decnet, but I don't see any insurmountable hurdles there. Please
correct me if I'm wrong.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!

A point to point leased line is undesirable because of the costs. Telco's
pricing has a full T1 cheaper than a 9.6 circuit but we don't need that
bandwidth and equipment to throttle down seems a waste.

An additional piece of info concerning the older version of hyper terminal.
I too had to find something else for one of my routers. I downloaded 'tera
term pro' from download.com and it performed as I was expecting hyper
terminal to.

Something just occurred to me: I remember reading once that IOS v11.3 was
specifically made for a telco provider (Sprint?) without normal
password-recovery features. Or perhaps it includes a feature to turn off
password-recovery. Either way, is it possible you have a router with that
IOS version on it?

Please check out www.boerland.com/dotu It
is a pretty interesting site. Be careful don't try some of these commands
on your production routers. They can locked up and cause a reboot. Some of
the commands are useful for troubleshooting. Just remember they are no
supported by Cisco.

I searched on CCO and can find no record of "no service password-recovery";
I don't believe there is such an animal. You're not using an older version
of HyperTerminal, are you? The old version didn't send the break signal
properly. You can try the newer version or a different terminal emulator
altogether if this is the case.

RE: ccna test 507

2000-12-09 Thread Puckett, Larry (TIFPC)

Jennifer, I just took the 507 test and can address some of your concerns.
--- scared to death is a little too far. You should be nervous because this
is not a test intended to be easy. It is an adaptive test that will focus on
your weak spots. I believe that although that is hard to swallow if you
don't pass, that it is still 'right' considering the intent of the
certification. Cisco obviously wants CCNAs to not have any weak spots. This
keeps the value of the certification high.
I obviously just experienced not passing. It exposed that I need to
increase my depth of knowledge in access lists. I will now retake the test
soon and if I have another weak spot, I'm sure the test will show it to me
as well. This is all good, although a little humiliating.

With 4 semesters and the level of confidence that you are showing, I suggest
you have no fear. Go take the test, and pass it!!! If it turns out that you
are weak in an area, it will tell you where. This can relieve some of the
awesome size of the task and let you focus on specific areas, knowing that
you are strong enough in others.

Go with high confidence and good luck...

Hello

This may seem ridiculous to alot of you, but I am forging ahead with my
question and I sure hope someone can offer me advice or help:

I am finishing up in the cisco academy in mid-month and naturally, we use
cisco press materials. I have been taking these classes for 4 semesters. I
am taking the CCNA next Monday morning. I feel prepared or so I thought
until
I looked at a Sybex book for ccna today.

It has so much more material in it and is so much more thorough, that I am
wondering what the heck I am doing taking this test Monday morning. It
has stuff I have never heard of, or considered. I am scared to death.

I have the transcender software and take all the on-line stuff I can get my
hands on, and I study constantly with the material that I have, but this
sybex
book has thown me for a loop. The stuff I have, I know well, but that's all
I
know. I have never even heard of a 1900 switch until today. In school,
switches are switches. No specifics.

My question: Is cisco press and transcender enough if you know THAT stuff
really really well??? (I can tell I definately want sybex material for
ccnp..)

Is sybex just so much better than cisco press that it gives more info than
you
need for future preparations in testing?

Opinions, advice, critisms...nothing rejected...

Thanks,
Jennifer Cribbs

Have a Good Day!!

RE: Dial-in Users are not getting logon script

2000-08-09 Thread Puckett, Larry

Is there a specific region of users having trouble? We are in the process of
troubleshooting the same symptoms with users in only one region of the
country having a problem. Bell South basicly has an inferior infrastructure
and doesn't care. We have at this point proven that the problem is just
dirty lines on the users end. (hard to swallow but true.) We have just done
some parameter changes which should make our 3620 more tolerant of dirty
lines but the sacrifice is that our maximum connection speed has been
lowered to 31K from 56K. TAC gave us this information as an effort to
improve the situation. It hasn't been implemented long enough to know if it
fixed the problem yet. Initial results look good though.

Good luck, this is a real bear.

RAS connection problems

2000-07-27 Thread Puckett, Larry

We use a PRI, Cisco Secure, and a Cisco 3620 for RAS connections. We have an
unusual problem in that only users in Bell South region have problems
dialing in. Many others have no problems getting connected around the
country on other local carriers. The symptoms are variable but most
consistent is that during the hand shake the line will get disconnected and
a recorded message from telco will say check the number and dial again. Has
anybody else experienced this? Did you find a resolution?

Interesting indeed.

All I usually have is the "modem Dialin", a "modem autoconfigure
type usr_sportster", and a "speed 9600" line. Obviously,
"login" and "password xxx", although those aren't required.

Are you sure the problem isn't modem-related? Perhaps you could
try resetting the line? (clear line aux 0)

RE: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-24 Thread Puckett, Larry

That's assuming that you would want to move into management. Myself, I am
enthused about the opportunities opened by certifications in the technical
arena, with appropriate compensation, without having to sell my soul in the
political atmosphere of management. They can have it. I wouldn't even want
it.

I'd like to interject a little if I may. Having all cert related
credentials will certainly open the doors to decent money and better and
better opportunities in the IT related field. All certs and no degree
however, (in most cases) is probably going to limit one's potential for
growth opportunities. To expound on his further, having a degree and
numerous certifications in the same discipline (IT in this case) could also
hamper ones long term potential growth opportunities! I am referring to the
possibility of moving into management positions in this case. Here the lack
of business related skills could draw many obstacles to which overcoming
them may prove difficult. It seems logical that a combination of both
technical and business skills/certs will provide one with the best platform
onto which you could build a solid career. Unfortunately, with bachelor
degree's becoming almost a commodity these days, you may soon need to set
yourself above the crowd with a graduate degree and high level certs of
sorts. I dare say the folks with a MBA and CCIE will soon find themselves
running the businesses of tomorrow.

Marshall T Rose - OSI study

2000-07-05 Thread Puckett, Larry

I have been looking for an out of print book for studying the OSI model to a
deeper level of understanding. I have received multiple recommendations for
a book by Marshall Rose. The title is in question but is something like
'understanding the OSI model'. I have tried Amazon and they confirmed that
it is out of print and did a search for it. And of course were unable to
find it. Does anyone have a copy that they would be willing to part with?

Hi Zack

The console cable and port work fine (9600 baud etc - have even tried other
baud rates in case someone changed the default) - I can plug it into one of
the other routers and it works fine for hours. Nothing I type has any effect
including carraige return.

Thanks

RE: Console Question

2000-06-26 Thread Puckett, Larry

I also had this same problem this weekend with a new to me (used and cleared
configuration) router (2501). I followed some good advice given here on
groupstudy and downloaded teraterm from download.com. all my problems went
away when using tera term instead of hyperterm. I was stumped. Thanx for the
good advice everyone.

Help needed

2000-06-09 Thread Puckett, Larry

Just bought a used 2501 for lab and received copy of working boot screen
with it. But when I boot it up it goes through a slarp and get an ip address
but continues to give message of ' NVRAM invalid due to possible write
erase'. If it doesn't go through slarp it comes to the setup dialog and am
unable to type anything via the console port or the aux port. After the
router slarps , I am able to access the router via aux port but not the
console and I am not able to get into enable mode because there is no enable
password set according to the router. I've tried auto install with a tftp
server to no avail. The configuration register is 2012 and during the boot
sequence I am unable to break into rom monitor or rx boot mode.

RE: ethernet 2 rj45's on one cable :P ?

2000-06-01 Thread Puckett, Larry

What you describe is a normal gotcha performed by wiring contractors. Cat 5
standards are infringed when this is done and will cause traffic problems.
IEEE standards are given for a purpose, and using all the wires in your
cable will cause collisions and other 'ghost problems' that you should not
want to deal with in the future. --- Don't do it!!!

Subject:ethernet 2 rj45's on one cable :P ?

hey :)

in normal cat5 ethernet, 4 of the 8 wires are used correct ?
if this is the case, would it be possible to have 2 physical links over
the 1 cat5 cable.
as in in 2 rj45's coming out of each end of the cat5, thus making 2
network connections over the 1 cable. anyone no if this has been done and
how it worked, or if it cant be done, and why :) ?

thanks :)

RE: Out of office floods

2000-05-25 Thread Puckett, Larry

Agreed, but when I joined this group and tried to use those 'rules' with
OUTLOOK 97, the rules didn't work. I upgraded to OUTLOOK 2000 and I was able
to send all Groupstudy emails to a file.

If you use Outlook/Outlook Express (and for that matter, any good e-mail
client), you can set up filters where all incoming messages containing the
phrase "Out of office" is either deleted or sent to a particular folder.

In Microsoft Outlook:
1. Click on Tools --> Message Rules ---> Mail --> New. This dialog box is
divided into three parts - a). Select COnditions for your rule b) Select
Actions for your rule c) Rule Description
2. In CONDITIONS - Select "When the Subject line contains specific words"
3. In ACTIONS - Select "DELETE IT" or "MOVE TO SPECIFIED FOLDER"
4. In the RULE DESCRIPTION - click on the underlined blue words "Contains
Specific Words".
5. In the dialog box that opens, enter the words "Out of Office". Click OK.
6. If you've selected "MOVE TO SPECIFIED FOLDER" instead of Delete, click on
the underlined words "Move to a Specifed Folder". Enter the name of the
folder you want to move these messages to. If you selected DELETE, skip this
step.
7. Give the Rule a name, save it and you're done!!

This will also delete any Out of Office messages you get from people not on
this list - your colleagues, friends / associates, etc.

Outlook has the same feature under TOOLS - RULES WIZARD with very minor
differences in the interface. Once you get the hang of it and understand the
concept, you could do it in any e-mail client that supports message
filtering, based on different parameters like Sender's Name, Subject, Body,
>From E-mail Address, etc. etc

Hope this helps...

As an internetworking engineer, you're not really SUPPOSED to know these
things, but I guess most people on that level do!! One realization that
dawns once you cross the Microsoft shores is - there's a whole world out
there that does not use Microsoft software!

RE: buying routers

2000-05-18 Thread Puckett, Larry

I just bought cisco routers off of ebay. There are many 'CCNA study
packages' listed. These are used routers at reasonable prices. Contact the
seller. He had many 2501's available last week. He may be able to help you
locate what you want. I received mine today, his credibility seems to be
very high. Good luck.

The biggest issue is not with Cisco. I'm studying on a
Token Ring 3000 (3102 I think), a 2513, 2 2501's, and a 2524.
Two of these are TR, and 4 are E'net.

The biggest problem is locating and purchasing the
other TR equipment needed, such as a MAU, and NIC's.

Can you tell me where these routers are, so I can buy them?
2 for $1200. wow.

3 routers (2500 series) and 2 switches ( minimum of 1900 series) is the
minimum effective lab. At least that is the answer that I get when I have
asked. That's what I'm buying, anyway.

What would some of of you consider a good lab set up for the home that will
give enough practice that a ccnp requires and that could be used also for
ccie . Looking for some ideas . Have some equipment already .
Let me know your suggestions .. Thanks ..
