Re: CCNP test order

2001-01-26 Thread STRAND Scott

The order I did it was:
Routing, Switching, Remote Access, Support.

Routing was the hardest of the 4 for me. Also, alot of the show and debug commands
that you need to know for the first three tests
showed up on the support exam.made studying for support alot easier which was nice
considering the poorly worded questions on
the exam.

Good luck,
Scott

Passed Support 2.0;Another CCNP

2000-11-27 Thread STRAND Scott

Passed Support 2.0 last wednesday with a score of 832. This was the only one of the 5
exams that I thought was poorly written.
Halfway through the test I was starting to get upset because the questions were vague
to say the least..but if you have studied
hard and know your show and debug commands you'll be OK. Cisco really shouldn't
require you to sign a NDA for this exam, who in
their right mind could remember these weird questions?? :-) Here is how I passed:

Used the Cisco-Press CIT book (OK)
Used the exam cram book. (also OK)
Used Boson test #2 (helpful, I reccommend it)
Used Priscilla's flash cards (very helpful)

Here's how I rate the exams from 1 to 10 with 10 being the most difficult:
CCNA - 4
ACRC - 7
BCMSN - 5
BCRAN - 5
Support - 6

I consider myself a CCNP Version 1.75 because of the ACRC test. I know that makes me
only a 1.0 so I'll probably take BSCN to get to
2.0. Oh well, I'll take it.

I've read *alot* of study books during this process and here are two "must reads" IMHO:

Routing TCP/IP - By Jeff Doyle (Never would have passed ACRC without this one)
Cisco Lan Switching - Kevin Hamilton and Kennedy Clark

It is CCNP 1.0. Because ACRC is one of the old exams I am only a 1.0

Re: Good Lan Switching Book

I used the Cisco Lan Switching book by Clark and Hamilton to prepare for BCMSN. I
thought it was well written, easy to read, and
contained everything I needed to know (and more, like ATM) for the test. I can't
comment on the other two books because I haven't
read them. I also used the BOSON test 1 for BCMSN. I thought the BOSON test was harder
than the real test.

I passed about a month ago. The exam is not product intensive but more conceptual. You
should be familiar with both set based and
IOS based switch commands. Concentrate on the main points: VTP, Trunking, MLS, Vlans,
Multicasting, and definately STPyou'll do
fine.

Actually BCMSN does not supply you with an exhibit to choose commands from. (BCRAN is
the test that supplies the exhibit). I passed

Passed BCRAN

2000-11-06 Thread STRAND Scott

Passed BCRAN last friday with a score of 909 out of 1000. Here is how I passed:

Read Cisco-press book by Catherine Paquet (Good, gives alot of information)
Read McGraw-Hill book by Thomas & Quiggle (Also good, easier to read)
Used Boson practice test 1. (Helpful)
Took the one week training class at Mentortech. Mentor always does a great job and the
instructor (Steve Daleo) was excellent.

The archives are correct as to what to study, ISDN (BRI&PRI), Async dialup, PPP,
TACACS+, NAT, etc.

This was the easiest of the three CCNP tests I have passed (ACRC, BCMSN, BCRAN). They
give you a list of commands (About 40) that
you can choose from for the fill in the blank questions.

Three down, one (CIT) to go. I'll check the archives for CIT hints and if the BOSON
tests were good for CIT.

Guy,
You're right, it is an external CSU/DSU that is in a remote location.
Thanks for the help.

ISDN call Command [7:8351]

2001-06-13 Thread STRAND Scott

I need to test if the bri interface used for DDR works without taking the
serial interface down. (Don't ask me why, the reasons are
political). So basically, I just want to see if it works. I've done the "sh
isdn status" to check level 1 & 2 but is it possible to
bring up an interface in this situation? How does the:

isdn call int bri0/0

command work? I tried this with no luck.

Thanks,
Scott

I get the error message "%Remove legacy DDR Configuration first" when I try
to switch from legacy DDR to dialer profiles. I thought
I removed all the legacy DDR statements first but I still get this error
message. Anyone ever see it?

Thanks for all the book suggestions. (see my original post). I do already
have TDND as well as the CID exam Cert book. Now for the
next question:
I noticed in the exam topics for CID that there is no longer a mention of
SNA and appletalk. Anyone who has taken the test recently,
can you verify this?

Re: Cisco Online test.

2000-07-31 Thread STRAND Scott

I didn't fair very well on BCMSN. Two questions that I though I got right but were
marked wrong were on Multicast IP address:

224.192.255.45 = My answer was 01-00-5E-C0-FF-2D and
224.163.163.45 = My answer was 01-00-5E-A3-A3-2D

Both were marked wrong on the test. What did I do wrong?

Passed BCMSN

2000-08-28 Thread STRAND Scott

Passed last friday with a score of 846/1000. Two down (ACRC/BCMSN), two to go (BCRAN,
CIT). Basically my impressions are the same
that are reflected in the archives:

Know Spanning tree, MLS, trunking, multicasting, VTP, vlans really well.

Here's how I passed:
1. Read "Cisco LAN Switching" by Kevin Hamilton & Kennedy Clark. Cisco press. This is
a great book and I call it the "Switching
bible".
2. Read "BCMSN" by Thomas, Bass & Robinson. McGraw Hill. Good supplement, but not the
bible!!
3. Took the 1 week training class at Mentor Technologies. Mentor (used to be CCCI)
always does a great job and the instructor, Pete
Welcher, was superb. Really good labs. Thanks Mentor Tech!

BCRAN is next. I'll check the archives for books, hints.

Removing WS-X5010 cards from CAT5k

I need to remove some WS-X5010 24 port cards from a Cat5k slots 4 and 5. My question
is what happens to the Vlans defined for the
ports on those cards. Should I clear the vlan ports before I remove the cards? The
same vlans have ports defined on other cards
(slots 2&3) that I am not removing.
