Ian,

It's not practical for me to answer such questions individually. By
posting it to the list as a whole, you'll have the benefit of other
opinions, including, for example, people who actually have used the
routersim product. I'd be interested in seeing some of that myself.

suresh's CCNP materials

2001-02-25 Thread ian gomeche

i bought suresh's CCNA materials and thought that i got a really good $45
worth.

he wants $45 for each of the 4 CCNP modules. that's a total of $180 which
is a fair wadge of cash
(more than the ciscopress CCNP prep library - 4 books- for example)

has anyone bought this CCNP material from suresh? what are your opinions?

thanks

ian

Cisco misrepresents test results

2001-03-16 Thread Ian Gomeche

Cisco misrepresents test results
By: John Leyden
Posted: 15/03/2001 at 19:17 GMT

A publishing firm has slammed Cisco for misrepresenting the results of its
tests on high-end optical networking kit.

Cisco claimed in a press release issued Tuesday evening that it, rather than
Juniper Networks came out on top in publisher Light Reading's tests of
Internet core routers.

After Light Reading issued a press release complaining about what Cisco had
done, the networking giant revised partially revised its statement but the
affair has angered those involved in the testing, which took six months to
put together.

Peter Heywood, founding editor of Light Reading, told The Register: "Cisco
has taken out factual inaccuracies in the original press release but we
still feel what it did originally was underhand."

Light Reading commissioned tests which were carried out by benchmarking
design consultancy Network Test using Spirent Communications performance
analysis systems.

The tests looked at Cisco's flagship 12416 router, the M160 from Juniper and
kit from Foundry Networks and Charlotte's Networks, and found that Cisco and
Juniper were far superior to the competition.

However being rated a close second wasn't good enough for Cisco, which has
60 per cent of the high-end routing market to Juniper's 30 per cent, and it
decided to spin the results in its favour.

"I'm very disappointed in this misrepresentation," said David Newman,
president of Network Test. "Cisco's 12416 put up some very, very good
numbers in this test, so the company had no need to spin it the way they
did."

Among the points on which Light Reading believes Cisco's spin went into
overdrive are claims that it did better overall when it won four of 16
tests, compared to the 12 won by Juniper.

Cisco's original release claimed it had won nine tests and also boasted that
it was the only kit to demonstrate Line Rate IP and MPLS (Multi Protocol
Label Switching) performance with 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps throughput. According
to Light Reading throughput on one of these tests was just 52 percent.

High end optical routers will sit at the core of service provider networks
and present a huge marketing opportunity for vendors selling next generation
networking technology to telcos. Success in selling such kit will be
fundamental to the fortunes of firms like Cisco and Juniper, so it's not
entirely surprising that the results of one of the first tests on suck kit
has been so bitterly contested. .

freebies

2000-11-11 Thread ian gomeche

i would like to make a comment regarding the thread on cisco free stuff.

i am based in the UK.

a few months back i completed the questionaire to get my free copy of 'IP
Telephony' by Mcgraw Hill . when i got to the end, i noticed to my annoyance
'only valid in US and Canada' or something.

Anyway, i had gone so far that I continued.

lo and behold, a few weeks later my book arrived.

moral of the story? apply anyway wherever you are. you never know!

right i'm off to apply for my free alarm clock thingy.

ian

P.S. i'm STILL having to wade through gallons of HTML rubbish on this list
which i should not have to.

i still do not understand how people who do not understand how to turn off
HTML or who don't see why they should can honestly expect to pass tricky
CISCO exams.

free cisco book

2000-11-18 Thread ian gomeche

whether this is the wrong list for cisco marketing plugs , it is not my
place to say but i would point out that mr armstrong's email took far less
time to scroll through than all the complaints or for that matter all the
mass of HTML i still have to endure when trying to read the digest

i have a copy of priscilla's book which i expect is awesome
but she has gone down a million points in my estimation for
making such a trivial complaint. after all the book mr armstrong was
plugging may actually be pretty useful. however i probably will never know
as when i went to sign up for it just now i got this when clicking on

Cisco warns of lower earnings

'Difficult business decisions': Cisco's John Chambers

After the US markets closed on Monday, Silicon Valley's largest company,
Cisco Systems, cut its earnings and revenue forecasts.
The tech giant, the worldwide leader in networking for the internet, said
that sales for the third quarter would come in 30% lower than the previous
three months.

This may be the fastest any industry our size has ever decelerated

John Chambers, Cisco chief executive

The firm also announced plans to layoff 8,500 people, about 1,000 more than
it previously said last month.

The company said that the current business environment had "never been more
challenging".

Sales for the third quarter would be down around 30% from the second, when
they reached $6.7bn (#4.66bn).

The company said it expects its revenue for the fourth quarter to range from
flat to down 10%.

Cisco blamed "global economic challenges, the slowdown in the global telecom
market and the deceleration in corporate information technology spending"
for its troubles.

"This may be the fastest any industry our size has ever decelerated, which
has required us to make difficult business decisions at unprecedented
speed," said Cisco chief executive John Chambers.

Industry slowdown

High tech stocks have plunged in recent months because of the slowdown in
the US economy and a slump in spending by firms on information technology.

Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks and Cisco's other rivals have all
either announced huge job cuts or have issued profits warnings.

And more are expected this week, with a slew of firms reporting earnings.

"My real concern is not about Cisco," said one analyst.

"Relatively speaking, the company will do well, but if relatively well is
having revenue difficulties to this order of magnitude, then it is troubling
for the industry".

Cisco shares were reaching $15.90 in after hours trading on Monday, having
closed on the Nasdaq at $17.20, where they had dropped 78 cents, or more
than 4%.

The stocks have plunged from a year high of nearly $72.

INVESTORS STUNNED TO LEARN CISCO NOT JUST STOCK, ALSO COMPANY [7:10135]

2001-06-27 Thread Ian Gomeche

INVESTORS STUNNED TO LEARN CISCO NOT JUST
STOCK, ALSO COMPANY THAT MAKES THINGS
Betrayed Shareholders Not Particularly Interested in Routers, Switches

San Jose, Cal. (SatireWire.com) - The rumors about Cisco Systems have been
circulating for months, but the earnings warning and plunge in its share
price Tuesday left little doubt in investors' minds that Cisco is not just a
famous stock, but may in fact have been operating as a large company that
makes complex and incomprehensible equipment related to high technology.

"I got into Cisco two years ago because I was made to understand it was
really the tech stock to own," said Cisco shareholder Anthony Timson of
Rahway, N.J. "Honestly, it never occurred to me that there was anything more
to it. Frankly, I feel betrayed."

Once considered the core high-tech holding, Cisco has watched its share
price fall 80 percent from last year's peak. As a result, much more
attention lately has been given to the company's market share, revenues, and
products, such as routers, switches, and Virtual Private Network
concentrators. Rarely, if ever, is Cisco simply identified as a highly
recommended stock or "surefire" high tech bet.

While Cisco CEO John Chambers said he is sorry investors have had to learn
about the company this way, he believes the public defrocking will be good
in the long run.

"Until recently, the only reason many people had heard of Cisco was because
our stock was famous," he said. "Now people will get to know us for what we
do. We'll be just like any other high tech company."

Timson, however, disagreed. "Other high tech companies make @!#$ I can
understand," he said.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

2000-07-29 Thread ian gomeche

right thats got your attention!

as interesting and useful that this list is, it would be a lot more damn
useful and interesting if people would STOP posting in HTML. it takes ages
to scroll through all the HTML garbage in the digest. if people do not
understand why posting in HTML is bad news or understand how to switch their
mail client to plain text, then they really do not have a cats chance in
hell of doing anything 'tricky' like passing a CISCO cert!

i refer you to the guidelines for this list. the second part is also worth
noting as again people who do not understand how to edit emails are hoping
to become CISCO stars!

ian

'Always send messages in plain text, not HTML format. Not everyone has an
HTML enabled mail client.
Always edit your quoted replies to the bare essential. Do not quote the
entire message including the signature. This just waste bandwidth. '

CCNA books Sybex or Cisco press ?

2000-07-30 Thread ian gomeche

Subject: passed CCNA.. now what? any recommendations?

Hi I recently passed CCNA v1.0 .. and was wondering if anyone could help me
interms of what I should be doing next? I gather CCNP v2.0 is the most
logical step I should be taking. Which exam should I take first? .. and what
text books can anyone recommend to me?

For my CCNA i used:

1. CCNA by Sybex (i didnt like this book very much)
2. Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices by Cisco Press - I loved this
book!.. yes I know this is geared towards CCNA v2.0.. but I found it
excellent in my studies for v1.0 (which i scored 925/1000 on).

I really prefer to invest my money in cisco press books from now on..

--

Well that is an interesting observation Luther. As someone who has just
ordered the Sybex Lammle CCNA study guide (latest 507 edition note folks) ,
exam guide and e-lab simulator thing, I was very interested in what Luther
had to say.

I have now ordered the CISCO press internetworking book as well but am
thinking of cancelling Lammle's books. Perhaps I should stick with both as I
am sure each has useful stuff in which the other does not have and a lot of
people seem to rate Lammle

Any comments anyone on the relative merits of the two books?

Thanks everyone.

In defence of Brad

I would agree with Chuck. Nothing wrong with a little self promotion from a
list regular (as opposed to unsolicited spam from an outsider). I think by
helping others, Brad is deserving of a little 'slack' from some of you.

It takes a microsecond (or so) to skip over a discreete 'advert' as opposed
to much longer to skip over HTML junk and repeated large chunks of previous
postings.

Point made perhaps?
