BSCN--

2001-01-31 Thread Moahzam Durrani

Just wrote the BCMSN exam. It was easy and straight froward. I was
disapointed as questions were more based on cramming rather then
thinking. There were few questions but very basic on Spanningtree , and
multilayer switching and trunking...wich is the heart of switchin. I wish
the exam had more scenario based questions were i could test my knowledge of
switching. If you studied the colts and bosson .. then the exam is easy. I
just think they should make the exam a bit more challenging.Hopefully the
next exam BSCN is abit more tougher . I just dont this certification to end
up like MCSE...

Hi!
I am planing to take the new BSCN exam. Does it make sense
to learn  "Configuring Dial
Up Connectivity" and "Integrating Nonrouted Services" (ACRC objectives) although
these objectives are not explicitly mentioned in the official course outline? Is
the understanding of the IOS 12.1 BGP Config Guide plus the BGP part of the
Large Scale IP Networks Design Guide from the Cisco Docu sufficient for the BSCN
BGP part? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,

BSCN availability (was Re: BSCN objectives)

2000-06-06 Thread Edward Solomon

IBM is also now offering the Cisco certification courses. To check
availability in your area (USA), please look at:
http://www-3.ibm.com/services/learning/news/cisco.html. For Canada, please
see http://www.can.ibm.com/services/learning/course/NC03C.html for the BSCN
course. Although currently unavailable, we are planning to deliver the first
one at the end of August. If interested, there is a section you can fill in
to be e-mailed about availability. Here in Canada, it will run for the first
time in Toronto (and I am probably likely to be teaching it!).

For this exam, would you recommend that the explanation of BGP provided in
the BSCN books is sufficient or would you recommend Basaam Halabi's book,

people recommend for this exam?

I currently have the BSCN book by Thomas M. Thomas published by McGraw Hill

I would say that you are better off buying Sam Halabis book for a formidable

RE: BSCN??

I just took the BSCN today and all I used was the Cisco Press book. I read
the book and then read it again while creating my own study guide. So far,
the Cisco press books have not let me down one bit. If you know them, you
will have zero problems on the test.

As far as the test itself, in my case, the first two thirds were easy. What
I mean by that is no reading in-between the lines or remembering really
obscure details were necessary. The last third took as long as the first two
thirds. The questions were challenging and required much thought. I scored a
885.

Try "routing in the internet" by christian huitema (2ns edition has an
orange cover)
very in-depth coverage of all the major routing protocols, good to read
cover to cover, a brief section on IS-IS and some other rare protocols is
included.

plus: recommended by nanog ;)

RE: BSCN??

2001-01-30 Thread Fowler, Joey

Usually I try and stay out of the clutter related to books, but relating to
the Original posting for this thread(which I couldn't find) My personal
comments on the CiscoPress book are to read chapter 9 first. While studying,
be prepared to turn to it to clarify concepts. Sometimes you are so busy
trying to figure all the in depth stuff you miss the whole picture, and that
chapter tries to keep things simple.

Try "routing in the internet" by christian huitema (2ns edition has an
orange cover)
very in-depth coverage of all the major routing protocols, good to read
cover to cover, a brief section on IS-IS and some other rare protocols is
included.

plus: recommended by nanog ;)

I cannot say that there were or were not, that would violate the NDA,
however I can say that I did not spend nearly as much time studying IPX
EIGRP scenarios as I did studying IP EIGRP scenarios.

I don't know about the Sybex book. I used the BSCN Study guide from
CiscoPress, Routing TCP/IP, and Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd
edition. Read through both study guides and the EIGRP and OSPF sections
of Routing TCP/IP. If you understand and can explain what you've read
at that point, you'll do fine.

I just purchased the CCNP Routing Study Guide published by Sybex. Is
the
BSCN Cisco Press book better? I also have Routing TCP/IP Volume one.
What should I use to study for the exam.

I agree -- The BSCN book covered everything on the exam, and in the right
proportions. (I passed last week using only that book).

But I didn't use the Sybex book -- they're usually pretty good.

Re: BSCN

2000-11-22 Thread David Armstrong

CIR is the Committed Information Rate which is determined by the Frame Relay
vendor. It is the rate they guarantee that they will move your data through
their Frame Relay network. Each PVC (DLCI to DLCI connection) can have a
different CIR.

>From your example (I'm assuming that you are giving Port Access speeds) it
appears that there is a central router with a 128k Port Access and 2 branch
routers with 64k Port Access. The Port Access is the bandwidth/speed that
the router connects to the Frame Relay network. Data can possibly be moved
at Port Access speed through bursting above the CIR even though the Frame
Relay provider only guarantees the CIR.

>From the information you gave the CIR isn't known; however, neither PVC can
move data beyond their Port Access speed which in your example is 64k.

Passed BSCN

2000-12-10 Thread Shaheed, Manzur

Today I passed the BSCN (Routing 2.0) exam with a score of 896. This was the
last exam for me to become a CCNP.

Lots of question about configuring OSPF and EIGRP. Not much BGP as I was
expecting.
I studied Cisco Press BSCN book by Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare (ISBN
1-57870-228-3). I also studied the material @Cisco.com at the following

No, you cannot mark or review answers in any of the Cisco tests. You have to
be absolutely sure the very first time around about your answers - there's
no turning back!

I'm studying for Routing as well. I don't have the ISBNs for these, but if
you want a good understanding of the material you should pick up Bassam
Halabi's Internet Routing Architecture, and Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP.
I'm presently working my way through the Doyle book, and find the reading
both easy and informative. I've started Halabi's book and I'm a bit lost
with all the NAP's and NSF's of the overview, but it seems to be just as
informative. I think these are probably two very good texts to read. I do
plan on getting the Cisco Press BSCN book just to fill in any gaps for the
exam. Good luck.

About BSCN

2000-10-05 Thread tony

Hi, group,
I have 4 years experience with cisco, and now I am preparing my
BSCN exam.I am using following materials: Chappell's ACRC,Halabi's
BGP bible and Doyle's book, also build a very small homelab which
include a 2501 and two 2502s.
I've read the new exam outline,I think I can skip Chapter
4,5,Part 4 and Part 5 in Laura Chappell's ACRC when I prepare the
exam.Could you tell me is the exam covered any questions about these
skipped sections?Because I 've got the knowledge about these
sections,I just want to refresh and pay more attention to the exam
outline.

Re: BSCN

2000-10-18 Thread Daniel Boutet

If you go back a few days (starting Saturday morning) I have made a few
comments on the same book.
So far, on my first read, it doesn't rate very high. As far as a study guide
for the BSCN exam I would not count on it.
I know I will be using Internet Routing Architecture by Halabi (Second
Edition) for BGP and at least Jeff Doyle's
"bible" on TCP/IP for OSPF

I am half way through chapter 8 (bgp) and it is good for an intro to bgp. I
did like the "intro" to OSPF also from chapter
5 and 6. But this is all I will call it "an intro".
It lacks way too much "flow" and there is not nearly enough diagram/example
of real configuration.
However ther is a very good description of the output of the "show commands"
for OSPF.

Just a man's point of view!

I would recommend getting another book. This is first edition, and full of

What really bothers me the most about it is the fact that the IOS commands

Passed BSCN

2000-10-30 Thread Helena

Hi everyone,

Just like to thank everyone for helping me out while I was studying for
the Routing exam. I am pleased to inform that I passed :o)

There were lots of questions on BGP, and quite a few on VLSM, hierarchical
routing. I attended the BSCN course, and basically studied from the
course notes, and used the Boson exams - which I felt were similar for the
easy questions, but the exam had harder questions in it. The course notes
were very good though - well organised and everything.

Thanks again
Helena

BSCN Exam

2000-10-31 Thread WKelly

Passed Routing 2.0 today, thanks in part to info I got from the
questions on this site.

If your prepping for this; know BGP and EIGRP theory & focus on the
syntax of the set and show commands. You need to know the command syntax
and also the console prompt it should be entered from. You should also
be familiar with interpreting the effects of such commands when
presented with a few lines of config

Good luck.

I will tell you my plan. I am studying BCMSN today, since the materials
are out for that. The materials are out for CIT and BCRAN as well. BCSN
is not out and will not be out until mid-August (I am talking about
ciscopress materials, other companies may in fact have materials).

So I am not doing the BCSN first, by the time I am done with BCMSN, the
BCSN stuff will be out.

Re: BSCN

2000-07-19 Thread Roman

There are no 'BSCN' books yet - not until August. If you want to study for
it now, just start reading anything you can get your hands on in reference
to OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, VLSM, and Routing TCP/IP effectively. As far
as practice tests, check out www.boson.com.

BSCN Update

2000-05-28 Thread Z. Hassan

Hi everyone.
Has anyone got any update about BSCN ?
I have searched Amazon and Cisco Press and haven't found anything.
Is it really true that Cisco is not going to publish the objectives
of the exam ?
A request to anyone to who has already has taken the exam  "Please
outline the topic of the exam". I guess that by doing this no one will
break the non disclosure agreement.
Can anyone also recommend some books for this exam ?
Any help would be highly appreciated.

BSCN news

2000-05-29 Thread Allied Network Research

Hi all,

I think it's time to take away some of the
confusion thas has risen lately around the BSCN course and the Routing Exam.
Cisco, of course WILL publish the objectives but as far as I can tell they are
still processing and evaluating the data they've gathered from the beta exams.
As BSCN/Routing was last in the row of the new CCNP 2.0 curriculum, this is
probably the last set of objectives to be published (of this particular series
of exams that is).

Meanwhile, I can tell you that Tom Thomas, Floris
Houniet, Tan Nam-Kee and myself kept ourselves very busy from November till now
writing the first BSCN book that will be published. Check out http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072124776/o/qid=959600618/sr=8-1/ref=aps_sr_b_1_1/002-3224503-3883219 for
more info. Our book is part of a series by McGraw-Hill that's edited by Tom
Thomas and the series covers the entire CCNP 2.0 curriculum so you may
want to check out the other books as well.

Right now we're at the final stage of finishing the
book and as a result there's little time to answer questions. However, I feel
that it seems a great idea to form a study-group on Groupstudy.com just after
the book is published. Please send an e-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "bscn studygroup" in
the subject line. I will only use these e-mails for estimating a student count
which is needed by Paul Borghese to set up an online group, so please don't ask
any questions here.

cheers,

Arjan Aelmans

I have reviewed the test topics (640-503) on Cisco Career Certificatons &

My question is: Has this subject (bridging) totally exclude from this test,

Re: Passed BSCN!

2001-01-12 Thread Jaeheon Yoo

Hi,
I took the test after 3 hours bus ride. This was my second for CCNP
Cert. (first one was Switching 2.0) I was thinking I had prepared a
lot, so I was confident before the test

Total questions 61. allotted time 104 minutes, passing score 690
My score 919, time spent 65 minutes. In general, I'm satisfied with
test and the results. But some of questions are still hard to
understand what were right answers for them.

First of all, the test follows the outline specified in Cisco site
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/pdf/bscn.pdf

In my case, I thought the test was evenly balanced between OSPF,
EIGRP, BGP. Those three protocols were hugely questioned.
Redistributions are covered a lot. And what I thought was tough was
not individual protocol configuration, but their general features like
this one.

In BGP, what are the possible events caused when you have full mesh
IBGP in your AS?

What I prepared for the BSCN is as follows:

1. Building Scalable Cisco Networks , by Catherine Paquet
I read it only once, but I should have read it at least twice. Most
of Questions were from this book. And it is well written.

2. Routing TCP/IP, by Jeff Doyle
I read it twice. For the second time, I just skipped ISIS part, which
isn't covered in BSCN.

3. EIGRP Network Design Solutions, by Ivan Pepelnjak
Just Once. I would like to recommend this, because it is very well
written and there's no material on EIGRP than this.

4. Internet Routing Architectures, by Sam Halabi
Twice, for the second, just flipped through it

5. OSPF Network Design Solutions, Thomas M. Thomas II
Part of it. I don't want to recommend this. It's poorly written and
contains many typos and hard to follow.

6. RFC 2328 - OSPF version 2
Well, I have to admit I'm still far from complete understanding of
this protocol. Especially part 6. But after reading it greatly helps
me understand "debug output".

7. Protocol Configuration Guide from Cisco site.

8. www.groupstudy.com, you know? This is the most valuable material of
all.

9. several RFCs, including rfc1771, when I thought I need more
research.

10. My own lab setup with three 2501 routers at home.

I admit all of these may not be needed just to pass BSCN. But I have
no field experience, I try to read widely.

The type of questions is very much similar to other tests which I
took. There's no fill-in, Instead you have to choose a large list of
commands, some of which are not valid commands.

Final tips just before the test, take a one more look at "show" and
"debug" output.

Thanks again to all group members.
Now on to BCRAN.

Regards,
Jaeheon

BSCN Test (Routing)

2000-09-15 Thread Stewart, Harley, M, Ii

I've looked at all the objectives for this exam. They say that other things
that are not listed could possibly be on the exam.
I was wondering if anyone has taken it. If so, are there any other subjects
I ought to prepare for before testing.

Thanks,

ACRC v. BSCN

2000-09-25 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

For those who had the occasion to either take (or compare) the ACRC and BSCN
exams, did you feel they were very, somewhat or not similar? I've been
reviewing the ACRC guide to keep that info fresh, awaiting the BSCN guide,
and wonder if this is a good idea or bad. I also wonder that, if one knows
ACRC, will one have a good foundation for the BCSN (say a good 60% to 70% of
the knowledge) or are they too dissimilar of a guide/course to carry each
other?

Any thoughts would be appreciated...even off line!

BSCN; Inter vs.Intra

2000-09-26 Thread Ariel Banzon

Thank all.

I still have a hard time with these two; intra and inter.

I still get confused. In the OSPF with multiple areas, it describes how
stub area carries Intra-area and Inter-area routes but not routes external
to the AS.

Is intra-area routes, routes with in the area?
Is inter-area routes, routes outside of the area, but does not include
routes outside of the AS?

It would help if you can give me some help with this concept.

Re: About BSCN

2000-10-05 Thread Ariel

I think you would kick yourself if any of the materials in the Chapter you
skipped showed up in the exam. Come on, read the chapters. How long will
it take you, four to six hours at most. Like you said it is review.

RE: BSCN LAB

2000-10-08 Thread Daniel Cotts

Each pair of students in a BSCN class has a pod of three routers connected
to two backbone routers.
Router1 has four serial ports.
Router2 has two serial and one Ethernet
Router3 has two serial and one Ethernet.
The backbone routers have one serial per student pod.
Router1 connects to Backbone1 with one serial.
Router1 connects to Router2 with two serial.
Router1 connects to Router3 with one serial.
Router2 connects to Router3 via Ethernet.
Router3 connects to Backbone2 with one serial.
No switches.
