IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...
Hi Everyone. Well, I finished my BSCN course through Global Knowledge last week. I have to say I was kind of disappointed. I really was wanting to spend some good time on BGP and OSPF but we had to rush through it because we wasted a whole day going over RIP??? I thought this was supposed to be an advanced class! My opinion is the only refresher we should have been given on RIP is: Router Rip Anyways, the instructor said they started making the labs easier because too many people complained about them being too difficult??? :::sigh::: Oh well. Thank God for this list and I guess I will be saving myself $2000 on the CIT course now. I will be taking my exam on April 5. I wanted to study BGP and Policy Based routing some more. My instructor did mention Cisco was up to IOS release 13 already. This was news to me. He said it had been out for some time. My question is, has anyone been using it yet? My instructor did say that they finally did away with my favorite command... write mem. A sad, sad day! Well, I knew it was coming. I don't suppose "c r s" will work at the command line?? :-) Heather Buri CSC Technology Services - Houston Phone: (713)-961-8592 Fax:(713)-961-8249 Mobile: Alpha Page: Mailing:1360 Post Oak Blvd Suite 500 Houston, TX 77056 -Original Message- From: Robert Padjen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, March 19, 2001 10:58 AM To: Chris Haller; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX I respectfully disagree with your summary point. Well, it may be like Z said earlier and that is...my instructor did not know what he was talking about. I thought 12.1 was still the most recent version but then again, I have not been on CCO recently upgrading my IOS's either. This doesn't make me feel like taking a course from GK anytime soon. Making a simple mistake that it exists is one thing but saying its been out for "some time" is scary. Yep, this instructor is "up to date" with Cisco IOS. SO up to date he's seeing the future. Chances are that your instructor was driving a cab or installing security alarms for a living a few months ago... Read the course material for factual information related to the exam. I wouldn't rely heavily on anything that an instructor said - there's not a lot of "value-add" there... Sounds like your instructor didn't know BGP either. What a shame. You could ask for your money back... BTW, I like "cop run start" much better than "write mem." It's more intuitive. Re: IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...
Your instructor's actions don't sound much in line with the real world. Version 13 does not exist & the IOS versions are only up to 12.1.(7). The closest GD is 12.0(9) & Write Mem works on my 12.1(x) 4500 router. Lastly- I cannot believe someone teaching Routing 2.0 class would cover RIP & not have time to cover BGP or OSPF. I'm taking that test Thursday & my co-workers (some have taken it a recent as last week) tell me the exam is 80% BGP & 20% OSPF. RIP is a CCNA topic. I'd be inclined to call Global Knowledge about this class. I get just under $5,000 a year in training money & this would infuriate me to know I blew a chance getting ahead... Most training partners are very concerned with customer satisfaction and try their best to offer high-quality classes. My guess is that her instructor was new. That happens. (It can be extremely difficult to teach a new class, but that's not her problem &;-) If they won't give her a refund, they might at least let her attend again for free. I realize it can be hard to get away again and possibly spend more travel money, but it's better than nothing. Re: IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...
Yipe. I just now noticed this thread, and it breaks my heart to hear stories like this. Global Knowledge classes are guaranteed. I'm not sure Heather could get her money back inasmuch as she did sit the entire class, but I am certain they will let her sit the class again with a more experienced instructor. Hey, I'm teaching BSCN in Arlington, VA for Global Knowledge the week of April 23 . . . not scheduled for any Texas trips any time soon. For future reference, Global Knowledge WILL refund your money or reschedule you if you return your materials to the instructor by the end of the first day. Instructors are supposed to emphasize that during the introductory remarks. When you schedule the class, talk to the customer service people and ask them about the instructor. The best questions to ask are, "how long has this person been a Cisco-certified instructor," and "how many times has this person taught this class." The instructor schedules are published about a month in advance of the classes. I hope you won't get a bad impression of all Global Knowledge instructors because of this one. I have had the distinct pleasure of auditing BSCN, CATM and OSPF/BGP classes since joining Global Knowledge, and the instructors in each case were outstanding in every way, but beyond outstanding in terms of technical knowledge. And I'm a tough critic, believe me. For example, how about having CATM taught by someone who participated in the development of the protocols as a member of the ATM Forum working groups? Or BGP taught by someone whose consulting practice focuses on designing networks for national ISPs. And of course, the groupstudy.com founder, Paul Borghese, is a Global Knowledge instructor. ;-) Pamela On Tue, 20 Mar 2001, Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote: > At 05:05 AM 3/20/01, Circusnuts wrote: > >No Way Priscilla... > > > >"wr" is all it takes when hammering across the Hyper Term window ;-) I > >agree- that class sounds like a bummer. RE: IOS version 13.xxx ?? and a Rant...
I recently attended an IP Telephony class at Mentor Technologies and it was a terrible class. The instructor (who turned out to be the VP of sales) was not very knowledgable about the product, although he did have a good deal of background on CVOICE. The entire class was very frustrated and I know the three of us from my company complained to both Cisco and our Mentor rep. After a few months of going back and forth, we've finally been a free class to replace the one we took.
