Dzilo,

Sniffer.com has documentation for the software and the different protocols.
Networkuptime has an area where they provide explanations of how and why the
software does what it does.
Packet-level has excellent troubleshooting and packet analysis theory.
http://www.networkuptime.com/
http://www.sniffer.com/
http://www.packet-level.com

Remember, to use it properly, you not only have to learn to use the tool,
but also the theory behind it.

Enjoy your new toy!

RE: Sniffer Pro 3.5

2000-10-20 Thread Hartnell, George

"A kinder and gentler nation."

I've used Sniffers since the (long lamented) Network General days. Support
before, during and after sales was one of N.G.'s best traits.

As far as useage is concerned, try and get some training. N.G. had very
good training, at one time, in geographically pleasing locations. Sales
types will say,"It tells you the answer in plain English!" While the expert
systems analysis does help get you into the troubleshooting ball park, it is
a well know fact that computer people don't speak "plain English".

This is a *must have* tool, but it does require some dedication to master.

Best, G.

My Turn Derek,

I believe that this my comment was totally valid, and whether or not you
were offended by it is not my concern and heres why:

1) I get sick of having to delete emails that have NO relevance to Cisco
Technologies from those that I receive from Mr.Bourghese's list
2) I feel that without doing even a miniscual amount of research on a
product prior to purchase is fool hardy and potentially a head ache waiting
to happen.
3) Look at the way in which the original question was worded "I bought this
Product and it looks great, does anyone have any clue as to where I can find
resources on how to use it and understand more thoroughly" This was a
liberal paraphrase of the original but it gets the point accross, Derek see

2000-10-20 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

Uh...whereas I don't necessarily disagree 100% with your reasons, I can't
imagine why anyone would want to just throw the money out and hope what they
get in return is worth the expense. Perhaps it's just me but before I buy
something, I at least try to discover it's pros and cons so I can get a
little better picture BEFORE parting with the dough. For example, before I
purchased my routers, switch and hub, I at least messed about on CCO and a
few websites. Hell, it makes NO SENSE WHAT-SO-EVER now that I think about
it - now appears as just laziness! Ok, so now I'm saying I agree with you
1%.

Your reasoning (and the original email's too) are sort of like the
UNSUBSCRIBE requests that the lazy fools send out ever so often. HOW DID
THEY GET ON HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHY CAN'T THE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
INCLUDED AT THE END OF EVERY - EVERY - EMAIL? It's all because they're
lazy.

RE: Sniffer Pro 3.5

2000-10-22 Thread Chris Lemagie

Got a question for ya Will.

Have you ever had to diagnose network performance or response time
problems??? How about poor application performance on your network???

If so, what tools do you use???

I personally believe that any questions regarding the use of Network
Associates Sniffer products are valid in this or any study group pertaining
to network theory, design or certifications. Sniffer products are some of
the most widely used and trusted network troubleshooting tools available
today. Just ask any experienced Network/Systems Engineer.

All Cisco SE types that I work with have used these tools quite frequently.

I would strongly suggest taking a moment to think about how a study group
members question relates to networking in general before you flame them in
the future. Remember, network theory and troubleshooting are a BIG part of
most Cisco Certification exams...

Of course, this is just my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion
of Cisco Systems, Inc.

I would guess that I'm not alone in my opinion however.

Please feel free to e-mail or call if you have any questions...

Thanks for your valuable time...

I originally thought the same thing, however I read the entire e-mail/reply
chain and in that reply chain, Will stated that his first response was due
to the fact that the original question was not a "Cisco" question.

Rest at ease, I do not intend to jump into the middle of any more arguments.
You are correct "protocol.guru" in stating that I have better things to do
with my time.

So do some others.

Chris you missed this one big time.

The issue was(is) that the guy said now that he bought a product, can
someone help him. AFTER HE BOUGHT A PRODUCT HE WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT.
Will's question was didn't he do any kind of research or testing before
buying it?

2000-10-26 Thread Chuck Church

Surprise. This has nothing to do with this highly annoying flame-fest. My
question is about Sniffer Pro 3.5. Is this a typo, or is 3.5 out now? I've
been waiting for the new version that runs on W2K, but I was told late
November. Their web site says nothing about 3.5 yet.

Sniffer Pro 3.5 is out already. 4.0 is coming out soon, I don't have the
official release date. The windows 2000 version is supposed to be 4.5, and
they told me that it was to be release some time near late November as
well

Hey, this looks like kids fighting over nothing.
Dzilo, and all those who want a sniffer manual ( FREE ) , send me a direct post. I
have a copy lying on my table.
I spend almost 2 hours of my day on Etherpeek and sniffer.

Anyway, I noticed people exercising thier English, I may not have otherwise bothered.
