Re: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
I got my CCNA in July and I will be turning 19 on October 31, 2000. I don't feel that I missed out one bit on my child hood. I've been to more parties than I care to remember and had laughs that I wish I could remember. I got started in A+ when I was 16 and it appealed to me. It was interesting and made me look smart when I could fix others computers. I then began to wander about the internet and how it work. When I turned 17 I enrolled in the Cisco Network Academey. I then fell in love with networking! I did a review for ciscopress' Exam Gear software, and the erata that you see on their page is all mine (many more minor mistakes)! They paid me well for it, I requested no money but just free books. I got the CCNP Library 1.0, BCMSN, (old) ACRC, CCDA, DCN, and CID(9 books in all). And when the box of books came I found a check for $500.00 inside as well (nice compensation). Now I'm working toward my CCNP along with a full course load here at the University of Toledo, where I'm studying Computer Science and Engineering Technology. Well all I'm saying is that it interests me and I still have time for a girlfriend and other social activities. Re: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
I work 28+ hours a week as the Senior Network Analyst for one of Canada's largest insurance brokerages. I go to college full time in a telecommunications program that was just moved into a $38mil new building with Cisco R&S up to the wazoo. I finished last year, my first year, with a perfect 4.0 GPA. I'm studying for Cisco certs, writing my NA & DA in Jan while all this is going on. I regularly attend parties, go out to clubs, and have an extremely understanding steady girlfriend of a year and a half now. I turned 20 on October 10. I can very safely say that I don't believe that I've missed out on one bit of my adolesence throughout this whole process. In fact, I believe the kind of people that I can relate to with the current knoledge I have, have just imparted upon me life lessons and critical teachings that I think everyone in life should have at this stage. I count myself extrememly lucky to have worked the people I have, and to have had the kind of mentors that I have had in the past few years. Computers haven't been my only focus in life so far. During high school I was overactively involved in the theater program, which was a 2 credit course which lasted 4 hours a day for a whole semester. After that I got involved in community theater and pride myself in being able to sing, dance and act in front of a few hundred people in a broadway style musical. Before my interest in theater I also played saxophone for the local Senior All-Star Jazz Band and am on their CD for that year. That would be 3 different types of saxophones by the way. :) I thuroughly enjoy my yearly trips to Montreal for the International Jazz Festival and the opportunities I've had to travel France, Italy, & Germany with my high school arts programs. I consider myself to be quite cultured, and enjoy aspects of life that I believe many people take for granted. This sort of pace at my age, for me, just puts things into perspective and allows me to say "Wow, just look at the world out there." I have always felt, and will always feel like there is so much I have done, but that will always pale in comparison to the things I have not done, seen, or experienced. Then I can turn around and take advantage of the opportunities I have to further myself in that wonderful world. It's not for everyone but if you're one of those people who can balance your life very well, then maybe it's for you. I've heard many people say this, and I very strongly believe in it and constantly use it as a principal motivation. "Nothing easy, is ever worth doing." Regards and best of luck, Greg ""Steven V. Re: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
Except that when you are that young and also that intelligent, doing things like going to chucky cheese makes you want to go postal... A recent experience I had with a similarly gifted child drove the point home. At a birthday party at the earlier mentioned Chucky Cheese's, I saw this particular young girl (my neice, who is 12 years old) crying. Not weeping or wailing, but just one or two tears as she looked out over the play area. "What's wrong?" I asked her. "Look at all the sad, silly little morons!" she said. "What's wrong with them?" I asked. She looked at me and asked "Did you ever look at someone and see their whole life - everything that's ever gonna happen to them - and you can't even tell them because they don't believe you?" "Yes" I said, stunned... "It's sad, that's all" she said. "Wanna go to the bookstore?" I asked. "YEAH!" she said, and she was out the door like greased lightning. Smart kids need challenges and interesting diversions, not fertilizer for vegetation. Things that are great fun for most kids are insipid to them. They have an appetite for greater and greater things, and that appetite needs to be fed. I do the best I can as her uncle. With parts I gave her, she built her own Pentium PC, and installs her own software (NT 4, IE 5, language software, games, etc.). I am not sure what she does with the chemistry set I gave her, but she hasn't burned the house down yet... She hasn't started any Cisco certs yet, but the idea appeals to her. Kids that do go after certs aren't comsumed by them like adults are. They just play it like a game, and do it in between all the other stuff they do. It's fun for them, and they relish the challenge. PS - the book my neice decided on that day was a book of soccer plays and strategies - she's on the team this year and is really giving it her all... so being smart doesn't make here a "bookworm". She still gets out there and lives her life, she just needs a lttle something more than Pokemon and video games. I believe that these young men receiving their CCIE at a young age is a representation of the internet generation. The more the internet gets popular the more young kids will ask themselves how does it all work.I think we'll see more and more young adults becoming interested in networking. >Here is a little poser for you all. Who is / was the youngest CCIE and what >was his / her age when they attained the CCIE? After reading a bunch of responses on this thread, I wanted to throw in my experiences..because it seemed kinda fun. Jumping back to the years I was 14ish, I was messing with several Commodore 64s running Image BBS with the coolest ProgramFile (called DOORS in the pc world) there was: Masters Empire! Most of my time was generally spent customizing the image system, since it was quite easy to do. Anyone remember "cursor dancing" in the messages? Using the british pound key and some keycodes? Fun times... Graduated to the Amiga shortly after. Wanted to stick with Commodore and I was so AntiPC you wouldn't belive it. The Amiga is one fun fun box, but even I will admit past desktop video and games it isn't much use. Finally did get a PC in 92 or so and have put together more than I care to talk about since then. Its hard to comphrehend(?) what 14 year olds are doing these days with web pages, networking, etc. But its all relativethats exactly how we were looked at around 10 years ago. At the time it was nothing to us, it was our passion, yet everyone else was going wow. Now, its no different, its just us looking back on them going wow. I do agree, with whoever said they were 20 and felt like they were behind, I feel behind as well. Any time thats not productive is wasted, imo, within reason of course ;) Now I'm 25, taking the lab inside of 3 months now, so sure I feel behind--but any extra modivation you can get is all ammo to become better. The bottom line is live and learn, and look out for yourself because noone else will. :D _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
Though I can't comment on being certified at 12 or 13.. when I took my certification courses over the last year of my life, there were guys in the class who were 17 when we started, 18 when we finished.. we couldn't even all go for a beer after class, but that was cool. I considered doing my Cisco certs right after high school, back in 1997. I did 2 of my MCP classes while in grade 12.. Windows 95, and Windows NT Workstation. Quite honestly, I've been a big computer geek since I was 11 or 12. I was rejected by society for different reasons at a young age, unpopular even in Kindergarten, and found peace in the digital world at age 10 or 11. Every kid has a hobby.. at 12 mine was hockey cards and computers. The computers stuck with me. Now I'm 21, and still spend an amount of time on computers per day that most would consider unhealthy.. but it interests me, and to be honest, I love my job. Now, if only we could get rid of the suits and ties at my company... ;P This morning, I sat a 3 1/2 hour meeting with 10 reps from Nortel, going over the features of the Nortel Business Call Manager -- my company is trying to teach me about telecommunications, and I'm helping train the telecom guys on the data stuff, as BCM is a box that speaks OSPF, RIP, IP, H.323, and interfaces other stuff for VoIP, and gateways to the PSTN for failover, and PBXs. What the generation that follows me is going to learn, and what the 12 and 13 year olds are even already doing, just boggles my mind.. I ran a BBS at 13.. these kids are running webpages with hits from worldwide, and designing spectacular graphics.. or the other kids who are running little mini-LANs at home. I am moving into my cousin's basement suite, and have no doubt that my 13-year old cousin is going to pick up on my Cisco stuff no problem. So what? He also has a girlfriend, skateboards, plays hockey, and has tons of friends. RE: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
Here's my 2 cents on this. Young kids / teenagers have plenty of time to prepare for such a goal. They have more time to play/study/whatever on equipment, the internet, etc then us working folks. If I would have known more about cisco and real networking (not BBS stuff) back in my teenage days I would have probably pursued it by 16/17 as well. I was busy running/networking BBS systems and FIDOnet style networks between the ages of 12-20 and all that stuff. I didn't have a interest in dating, partying, bars/clubs, etc. Created our own BBS-network and me and a group of friends programmed our own FIDO-mailer (similar to FrontDoor and GEcho). We had a UUCP (Internet and Usenet news) feed into our BBS-network in the late 1980s/early 90s as well. I made a few BBS doors as well but thats all behind me now. I lost interest in all that when I touched a cisco AGS+ at my first real job then moved on to a networking firm 2 yrs later and am still there. Job #2 in this version of my life. I do this all for fun. It's a hobby that pays the bills and funds the toy collection. ...Erick CCNP+Security+NetRanger, NNCSE, CCIE attempt 2 soon > > --- Brian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > > > 18, works for global data systems in louisiana > > > http://www.globaldatasys.com > > > > > > Brian > > > > > On Fri, 13 Oct 2000, McCallum, Robert wrote: > > > > > > > Here is a little poser for you all. I just can't image what these kid are going to be able to do in the future. When you were 16 the internet was not what it is today the information these kid have today at there finger tips is awesome also faster. All I can say is he will be saying the same thing when he is 20 and see a 12 year getting into it. I'm not sure how these kids do socially though nor how mature they are. That does come with age. again my two cents, Steven V. It got replaced with sneaking away from your job as a network administrator, reading and going to seminars :-) Seriously, I never once snuck out to go to a party or date. Infact, I didn't even start dating until my roommate's yanked my MCSE books out of my hands and forced me to go and talk to some girls across the hall from us. Re: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
Well, if the "kid" has those CCIE numbers and can do the job what's the problem? If the "kid" can do the job it kinda supports the CCIE certification doesn't it? You got the numbers you can do the job - regardless of age. my opinion of course! :-) Kevin Wigle CCDP/CCNP - Original Message - From: "Steven V. There is a kid in my mother's neighboorhood that is 16 and just got his CCNA. HE is going for his CCIE now. I'm 20 and I feel so far behind in the game, just getting my CCNA now. RE: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number
Title: RE: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number Ok I'll help clutter the bandwidth up on this subject. I'll turn 21 next week and I ran a BBS and could repair any PC when I was 10, I started home-schooling and then started working at 14 in a computer shop. I've never quit learning and have almost 7 years experience behind me now. MCSE CCNA and working on CCNP. I've received opportunities that are amazing. At 18 I made more money than my parents combined. I wasn't forced to do it but rather it was my decision. I don't think it is for everyone but those that make the commitment at that age I think have a level of maturity that makes them capable. My childhood wasn't lost, and I know what I want out of life, The only thing I would change is to learn more. Just my two cents.
