If it is Southern NH, you at least can end up with
many places in Northern Mass.

RE: where do live

2000-08-04 Thread Ohsfeldt, Miles E.

Jim,

I feel I'm letting the cat out of the bag here, but you might want to see if
you can get an interview or two in Albuquerque, NM. I don't live there now,

but would jump at the chance. That city has been rated very highly as "one
of the
best places to live" in the U.S. each year for the last decade.
My experiences with Albuquerque are that it's nestled in beautiful
mountains, doesn't
get huge amounts of rain (Seattle), doesn't get bunches of feet of snow
(Denver), doesn't
have traffic and pollution problems (L.A.), is not steamy hot all summer
long,
(Houston/Phoenix), and is one of the cleanest cities in North America. It's
not so big that
your commute is very long, and cost of living is very reasonable (although
salaries
will reflect the cost of living).

Good luck searching!

Hello,

I'm so tired of working 60-70 hours a week; I'm so
tried of paying $3,500 mortgage per month for a 1,300
sqf home; I'm so tired of driving on that crowed
highway (if you consider 5MPH is high). I'm thinking
moving out of silicon valley bay area.

Where, in US, can I find a place that is not cold in
winter, not hot in summer, no too much snow, no too
much rain, IT job market not too bad? I know it's
difficult to find such a place, but close?

Thanks in advance.

Look at Colorado Springs, CO. I lived there for two years. Almost always
sunny and 70 degrees. Even in winter, it would get maybe a couple of days of
snow, but never horrible. Lotsa good companies in that location, lotsa

I have been told that Seattle, WA is very beautiful, but it rains all the
time. A friend of mine said Seattle can be depressing - even though it is
beautiful - because it rains so much. Seattle folks, is this true?

Just few more words on this:
Yes, I have been living in Seattle area for one year. For me the rain is not
problem, the traffic is not problem because I live three blocks from my job
(Housing is STILL more affordable than Bay area)... Cisco related jobs are
just increasing...

The major problem for me here is social life. To make a long story

RE: where do live

2000-08-01 Thread Jon McCoy
Title: RE: where do live

I wouldn't say _rains_ all the time -- but it's cloudy more than most anywhere else you'd want to live. And the clouds aren't high, puffy ones, but completely overcast, grey skies. Going several weeks without direct sunlight makes some folks a bit cranky and depressed -- diagnosed as Seasonal Affected Disorder.

On the other hand, within an hour I can be snow skiing or rock-climbing, sailing on the sound or Lake Washington, or at the airport going someplace sunny for the weekend. Unless I'm trying to go there during rush hour, which must rank as one of the worst in the US.

RE: where do live

2000-08-01 Thread Karen . Young

It does NOT rain all the time. Its just propaganda to keep people from
moving here from California. :-)

Seriously, it does tend to be gray skyed more than is really necessary but
you can count on only having a couple days of snow a year (slushy snow at
that). When it does rain it tends to be fairly light if somewhat extended.
You can usually tell the natives (anyone who's lived here more than 2
years) from the visitors by who is carrying an umbrella. Natives usually
don't bother.

Summers rarely get above 90.

Over all it's not too bad but you might want to keep in mind that the IT
industry here tends to be software-centric due to Microsoft and Nintendo.
Not to mention all the web startups. The web startups have a tendency to
use their server people (often ex-Microserfs) to build the network (lots of
cleanup later - if they survive!). Having an MCSE is just about enough to
get you an interview for a HelpDesk position but the Cisco means a bit more
although BGP is pretty much a given requirement for anyone being hired (all
those web companies). A large number of the communications, internet,
technology companies have a Data Center / NOC at the Westin Tower.
Something that is very convenient for interviews. It has nice views of
downtown Seattle, Lake Union, and Elliot Bay. They had to rip out one of
the hig-rise elevatory not too long ago because they ran out to space for
power other cabling. They've driven out most of the lawyers by now. :-)

Bad points: cost of living is a bit high and you can generally count on
sitting in traffic for the commute. Since the two major employment centers
are located to either side of Lake Washington you usually have to hit one
of the bridges to get to work/home.

Good points: coffee beer - lots of both and very high quality. Stay away
from Starbucks - they overroast their coffee beans so even their "light"
roast tastes burnt.

Anything else you want to know?

Funny you should mention. I am starting a new job in Old Alexandria on
August 15. Moving from Jersey. I am a little nervous as I have been with the
company I am leaving for 5 years, but there seems to be so much going on in
the Alexandria/Reston/Arlington area in the way of tech.

Speaking of the commute, living in Alexandria and communiting into old town
isn't bad right? I mean it is just bad if you have to get on the loop
right??

Dallas is exploding--prices are moderate. Winter is mild (to someone who
grew up in the Midwest) and the summers are hot but everyone lives inside
A/C. Cisco's hiring 4000 more people in the next 4 years in Richardson (a
suburb, Telecom Corridor)--and going head-to-head with Nortel, which is also
hiring. Pay is obviously competitive.

It's pretty durn good here.

 Jim

This discussion should be on the Jobs list, not on the Cert list. Please
move it over to that list.

Re: where do live

2000-07-29 Thread Jeffrey Humphreys

Jim,

Don't come to St. Louis, Mo. It's hot and humid in the summer, cold in
snowy in the winter, and it floods in the Spring. However, for $3500 per
month you could get a mansion with a pool. I'm talking a 3000 - 3500 sq ft
house and we even have basements :-)

Re: where do live

2000-07-29 Thread John Hardman

The silicon desert! Phoenix.

8 months of "to die for" weather. 4 months of nasty hot, but you are in IT
and work inside ;-) Lots of recreation opurtunities (lakes, golf, hiking,
etc), lots of culture wild and conservitive. Pro teams of all kinds.

Lots of big companies have headquarters here, call centers, and lots of med
sized and start-ups too.

Traffic is not too bad, depending on where you live vs. where you work and
the schedule you have. I live 25 miles from work and have a 9 ish to 6 ish
schedule, it rarely takes me more than 30 mins either way.

For $3500 a month on house you could be in a very nice 4000+ Sqft house on a
very nice golf course.

If you have senior Cisco and/or UNIX and/or Oracle skills then you will like
find work right away.
