[CMLHope] eye bleeds
Good to hear from Jim and Peg. I recently had the same thing happen to me. I was in my onc's office and my daughter told me my eye was really red. I actually had an eye bleed in the Onc's office. He said he couldn't say it was from the Sprycel and called in the pharmacist and she said the same thing. Well, so much for their knowledge about Sprycel. I was still curious and looked it up right when I got home. There it is, right on the Sprycel site. This medicine can cause eye bleeds. We must do our own research. I had one more episode of eye bleed and then they went away. Hang in there and fight! We are Warriors every one of us. Blessings, Jeanie<3 In a message dated 4/29/2013 1:15:55 A.M. After about one year they couldn't find any trace of the cancer, what a wonderful gift God had given me. At first I didn't notice any different side effects than I'd had on interferon the tingling in my feet and numbness was still there as were the leg cramps at night. I was still working at that time and then the cramps came more often and were more severe, they also lasted longer than before some times for 20 minutes and longer. Then I had my first eye bleed, I worked as a Conductor on a commuter train in Chicago and a passenger asked what happened to your eye. I had no clue what he was talking about so he said that the white part of my eye was completely red. Now that was great news early in the morning! I was amazed that I never felt it, had no idea what I looked like because it wasn't that way before I left the house. Now my hands, back, even the sides of my neck and legs cramp. But as we warriors say life goes on and it's still great to be here! We must never give in to this disease we are fighters and the war goes on. I look at all the advancements that have been made since being DXed and am so happy for those having been made some day there will be the advancement we all pray for and no one else will have to suffer with this any more! 18s to all you fellow warriors as well as my prayers Jim Rodeghier --- On Sun, 4/28/13, margoo...@aol.com wrote: From: margoo...@aol.com Subject: Re: [CMLHope] AND THEN IT'S WINTER. When I was diagnosed, I decided that CML was not a death sentence but a chance to live my life and make every day count. It has been at times a very tough road, as I had a mini stroke in April of 2010. It left no lasting imprint but it was very scary. My husband had a widow maker heart attack but he is a walking miracle. My mom passed away and April 3rd was the first anniversary. She spent 6 1/2 years in and out of hospitals and nursing homes. My 64 year old brother in law died suddenly in July and one month ago my 92 year old dad had a stroke. He has made no progress, in fact he is worse, and is no in permanent long term nursing care. Despite all of this, life is a wonderful thing. We also see people and wonder "do we look like that?" But it is so joyful to wake up every day and know that my husband, the kindest and most wonderful man I know, has woken up and that the other important people in my life have as well. Yah Patrick! Glad you are doing so well. Tasigna didn't work for me. I had to go on sprycel. It's working good. It seems these meds dry out our skin and eyes. Use a some good eye drops to keep the eyes moist. Cool water helps a lot. A worry would be if the cells are bleeding, might they be bleeding in other areas? Yes check with your doctor for sure. You do need to make your doctor aware that you are having them. And most are no big deal and go away on their own. But they can be severe enough to stop Gleevec and possibly require other medical intervention. It just depends on how bad yours are. If you're in doubt insist on seeing your doctor right away. If they are like the eye bleeds most of us have had just let them know about the event and likely you will just follow up at your your next appointment. Mine were very mild compared to most people's. But that's still one more thing I don't miss about Gleevec. (I'm a month away from 2 years on Tasigna and a year of PCRU.) If your eyes itch, rubbing is not an option. Hi Doris-bmt, According to web-md a rare side effect of Gleevec is Retinal Hemorrhage as well as Eye Bleeds. Although I have never been on it, I had a bone marrow transplant almost 23 years ago, I have heard of this happening many times with people taking Gleevec. It usually subsides in a short time with no permement eye damage. What you have here is a trade off. You may have some side effects but your still alive to have these side effects. As long as your getting out of bed every morning and doing what you do then your doing well. You being on Gleevec for the past eleven years proves it. If Gleevec were available when I had CML I would have opted for it rather then having that bone marrow transplant. Not to say that there may be certain people that will need a BMT because it all depends on their circumstances. Even so, I would have still liked to try it... 18's (symbol for life) Marty On Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 11:17 AM, Dorisbmt wrote: > > I have had eye bleeds but I don't know if gleevec has anything to do with > it. Re: [CMLHope] Eye bleeds.
As other CMLer's have pointed out, yes Gleevec causes eye bleeds. (I'm a month away from 2 years on Tasigna and a year of PCRU.)If your eyes itch, rubbing is not an option. I got relief with a cold washcloth gently dabbed on closed eyes. Patrick --- On Wed, 1/23/13, Dorisbmt wrote: From: Dorisbmt Subject: [CMLHope] Eye bleeds. Re: [CMLHope] Eye bleeds.
I had two eye bleeds while on gleevec. I had rubbed my eye because they were so dry. I had cramps in my fingers and legs also. I'm on sprycel now. No eye bleeds so far. The eye bleeds usually clear up on their own. Good luck. Jeanie Sent from my iPhone On Jan 23, 2013, at 11:31 AM, "C.M. Houtz" wrote: > I had many eye bleeds while on Gleevec. Re: [CMLHope] Eye bleeds.
I have had numerous eye bleeds over the 4 years I've been on Gleevec. Eye doctor has never found anything wrong. It is a side effect of the medication but not an issue you need to worry about other than it doesn't look very pretty. I use an eye patch if I have a bleed at work. Re: [CMLHope] Eye Bleeds
April 19th was the 12th anniversary of the day I entered the STI 571 trial at UCLA, and over the 12 years I've been on treatment with Gleevec, I've had scores of eye bleeds. Sometimes they come in clusters where I'll have several right in a row, and sometimes I go for many months without one. Dr. Charles Sawyers, my doctor and the co-investigator in the STI 571 study at UCLA, Dr. Ron Paquette, my current doctor who was involved with the studies for Sprycel, and my opthalmologist all have said these eye bleeds are benign. Sawyers and Paquette are considered CML experts. These eye bleeds look horrible, but they go away in a few days. Some of mine are small in the corner of my eye, and some have covered the entire white of my eye in deep crimson. (I get a lot of sympathy for those!) Sometimes I can tell I'm getting one because I feel a little pin prick in my eye, and sometimes I can't feel a thing. None of these doctors have said anything about them being dangerous or leading to brain bleeds. This is just the information that I have. While on Gleevec, I had lots of eye bleeds.two or three a year. I went to my Eye Doctor, who always checked them out. At that time I didn't have any idea that it was from the Gleevec. Mine went away after a week or so, but they scared me at the time. I never did tell my Oncologist, so think that would be a good place to start. On Tasigna now and haven't had a problem with them. Re: [CMLHope] eye bleeds and brain bleeds
Dear Susan, First, this is not a stem cell transplant. What it consists of are having a blood draw every morning for the first week, for seven days. I then had to go back in the afternoon as soon as the results were done and then I received two injections of Nupogen, one in each arm. The next morning I would go back and have the usual blood draw then wait until the afternoon and go back and if my white cell count was below 60,000 then I would get the two Nupogen injections. This went on for the first week and the second week was a "rest period" with only getting blood tests on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This would alternate for six weeks, and since there were three times that my white cell count came close to 60,000 I had to make up the missed six injections over the next three days, for a total of 42 injections. What this did was to stimulate the three different kinds of stem cells in my body by stimulating the white cells to grow like I was having Leukemia but the white cells were being manufactured as mature cells unlike having Leukemia. I did have a lot of bone pain especially in my sternum and pelvis the first week and sometimes as well. Also had some terrible chills and sometimes I had a low grade fever. Since this is considered an experimental procedure insurance did not cover any of it. I had to pay for everything myself, and it was very expensive. To answer your question about type one Diabetes, yes, this doctor had one person that I know of that had type one and it did help him as well. GOD bless you Susan Zimmerman (That is how I write HIS name rather then the usual g-d because this is how I show my respect to HIM) I am traditionally different, but still the same, if you know what I mean... Re: [CMLHope] EYE BLEEDS
Hi Sandy, I've been on 400 mg of Gleevic since it was approved in 2001 and have had many eye bleeds. Once it was the entire white part of my right eye and that was the only one that I new was Coming I felt a stabbing pain in that eye. They come and they go away, some times it takes several days to dissipate, others they are gone the next day! I wish you well! Re: [CMLHope] EYE BLEEDS
Hi, When I was on Gleevec I had lots of eye bleeds and now that I'm on Tasigna, I don't have them. My doctors were concerned and I had my eye doctor check them all of the time. I was on as much as 800 mg. of Gleevec, so I did have lots, but not as many as you had, Virginia. I'm thankful I'm not getting them any longer. These side effects are not fun, but, as I told my husband a few minutes ago, what are our choices? We put up with whatever they are, and try to handle them. Not much else we can do. I feel lucky that I haven't had more on Tasigna...very fortunate. Yes, eyebleeds caused by Gleevec, listed as one of the side effects. Not serious but very scary. Blessings Jeanie<3 In a message dated 6/5/2009 7:36:50 P.M. The second time was horrible and went to the eye doctor but he said it was nothing serious and would clear up on it's own. I happen to see the oncologist/hematologist at the same time and she told me that if it happend again that soon, to call and they would set me up with one of their ophthalmologist that a blood vessel might need to be cartorized. (not sure about the spelling). But I've had no more problems like that in the five & half years I've been on Gleevec, but it is a side effect according to the paperwork from Novartis. My eye doctor put it in my file:) My eye doctor says normally people have eye bleeds because of stress, heavy lifting, or high blood pressureof which none of those pertained to me at that time, so I showed him the list of side effects and he included them in my records.
