West Marine has a product called Salt Away. I used it but the ultimate cause of the problem was elsewhere so I cannot attest to its effcacy. David F. You could probably get an idea how bad things are the next time you replace zincs or check the thermostat. I've heard of using vinegar. Prestone and Peak make products using sodium citrate (IIRC). Chemical cleaning is kinda risky but so is a blown head gasket or warped heat because of blocked coolant channels. While this makes sense, I'm wondering whether it's necessary at this point, given the age of the engine. in other words, is the damage already do Everything? Also, I'm wondering what the long term effect of seawater cooling is and what failures or problems result from the seawater over long periods of time. Re: Stus-List Teak stain?
On my new cabinets I've use Watco Danish Teak Oil ( which my friend who does wooden boat restoration says is the very best you can buy) and one or two coats on the new teak exactly matches the old factory. All the teak on my 38 mkII is oiled, not stained and varnished. I have been using Starbright teak oil from WM to maintain the teak on both the 25 and the 38, but wil use Watco in the future. Particularly since I found someone who sells quarts on EBay for half the local price and less than the Starbright. Stus-List handicap for after market sprits
Peat, This Email below is from my FH in NE but the implementation of the rule was delayed for public comment from our members. Essentially the new matrix adds three seconds to my old rating (IMX40) with the same configuration. There was an extensive study done that revealed asymmetrical spinnakers have been able to rotate further to Windward to allow deeper downwind angles then the initial rating system accounted for this?? Other members don't understand why boats that were built with Sprint are not penalized or adjusted the same as the boats with sprint added to them after-the-fact? Our PHRF region has two main groups one more competitive group in the Marblehead area and one less competitive group comprised of older vessels in Maine. The boats in MH are 70-80% AS in the race fleet. There are a group of older WELL maintained (Nelson Mrek,Frers, Taylor, and a newer 36.7 beny) that go SM and class 5/6 are SM. but all the big boats that are racing have purchase or converted their boat to AS. And of course all the new one design fleets are asymmetrical j70…. In Maine its SM except for the j/105’s and we have limited participation from a few AS Race boats Farr395, 1D35, Swan club 42… There are 2 conversion sprit boats participating in Maine next year IMX40 and a Farr43. I feel that asymmetrical is the way of the future easier to sail and more fun. go at least 20% or their pain to jibe. The new matrix proposed is provided in the table below: D/L=(dis (lbs.)/2240)/((0.01*WLL(ft))3) %=J*X for sprint length # are adjustment to your rating D/L bow 10% 20% 30% 2209 6 3 0 150-220 6 3 0 -3 100-150 3 0 -3 -6 1000 -3 -6 -9 Good morning Ryan Yes, I was there and a new rule has been passed for 2015. The heart of the issue, as you probably already know, is that for a number of years boats which changed from a symmetrical spin to an asym were given a credit of up to 9 sec/mile. PHRFNE is finally recognizing that the credit was a mistake in some cases. I don't know how it will impact your handicap because I don't have access to the 2014 cert for your boat (I can access only those boats that were in the GMORA fleet in 2014). But the rule is essentially based on the ratio of your displacement to LWL. Then depending on that ratio and the length of your sprit relative to the J measurement, you may see a reduced spinnaker credit of 3, 6 or 9 sec/mile. By the way, the displacement used will be based on an empty boat and that number may not be what is on the boat's 2014 certificate. PHRFNE will be publishing, shortly, an explanation of the new rule in layman's terms so that you can understand what has transpired. I recognize that the above has probably created more questions than answers but more will follow soon. Ryan Raber 207.841.7881 r...@fvprovidian.net ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. I've replaced the mast step twice; the second time only because I didn't do a good job the first time. And I've now found a soft spot on the starboard side which I think is from a leaking genoa track. Ron Wild Cheri ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Stus-List Where is my old 30' CC now
I was wondering where my original CC 30' is now. I purchased her in 1975, brand new, from Havre de Grace Marina in Maryland. What a beauty, chocolate brown hull with a cameo deck. It had the Atomic 4 engine that ran like a dream. I had never sailed in my life when I purchased her and Arvid, the marina owner, took me out several times to show me what everything was for. Needless to say I have been hooked ever sense. Fusty, the name I gave her, was the 30 footer that CC had at the boat show that year in either Montreal or Toronto. She was totally decked out with all the goodies because of the show. I sailed her on the upper Chesapeake the first year and gradually started sailing with a larger head sail, she came with a 110, 135, and 170 headsail. Not knowing anything I started with the 110 and worked my way up to the 170. I loved the thought of racing and during the first winter on the hard I had spinnaker gear installed, BG hornet series gauges, and had a spinnaker and tallboy made at Concord Point Sail maker. Unfortunately, I can not find any info with the hull number and the marina has changed ownership and they have no record. Is there a way to find Fusty now? Not saying the CC 30 will not do well - just that there are only enough racers with $$$ to support so many of these classes. Also note the Farr 30 seems to be embarrassing the newer Farr down at Key West. The CC seems to be rated much faster than it is on the water so far, which won't make for happy PHRF campers. Hi Richard, I'm not sure how effective it might be, but dropping a quick email to the Mayor and the seven councillors who voted against the motion to acquire the property from the Federal government upon which the museum sits would be greatly appreciated. I think it is important to remind them that the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston has a much broader constituency than just Kingston. Emails from far afield might emphasise that. The New Age of Sail exhibit, the founding of the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, and the preservation of the history of recreational sailing in Canada and the Great Lakes are all initiatives in which the Marine Museum has been involved. Re: Stus-List Teak stain?
It's quite possible that many layers of teak oil can impart that reddish hue, or like David says, cherry flavoured oil. The older boats do seem to have darker teak than the later ones, whether because of age or because the process was changed as tastes went away from the teak cave look. I want to varnish the steps, not oil them, so a pre-stain is necessary. I was considering an oxalic acid bath to lighten up the steps a bit, but after due deliberation, I quite like the richness of the current stain. First coat of varnish goes on today. Re: Stus-List Sailing magazines
Joel, I’m finding Sailing World is now geared to the high-tech racers and PHRF racing has become a distant memory. While seeing the latest advances is interesting, I’m finding it’s not worth it. I do enjoy Cruising World for the articles and the advertising for gear and boats. If you like projects and articles about cruising, I would recommend “Sailing and Good Old Boat. Your attached piece by Mr. Granatstein is quite accurate. The Marine Museum is facing extinction if the Federal Government doesn't change its mind and hangs on to this historic piece of waterfront property, or if they don't work more closely with the City of Kingston to help them acquire the land. Otherwise it will be sold to private developers who will evict the Museum to build more condos. The Museum does not have enough money to finance a relocation, even if a suitable location was available. Yes, please write your MPs, especially the Conservative ones. This is very serious stuff. Re: Stus-List Fresh water flush of engine
I don't know about flushing the engine with fresh water (I'm in brackish water - mid Chesapeake) but I plan on putting a T valve in my water intake before next splash so I can easily hook up a hose to ingest anti-freeze. The intake hose seems to get bonded to the thru-hull and I'm tired of having to struggle (or cut) to get it off each year. Project number 206. A mechanic recommended that I install a t-valve for the raw water intake so I can flush the engine with fresh water occasionally. The engine appears to be in good condition and runs well in the two years I have owned the boat but I suspect that it is the original, making it 33 years old. While this makes sense, I'm wondering whether it's necessary at this point, given the age of the engine. in other words, is the damage already do Everything? Also, I'm wondering what the long term effect of seawater cooling is and what failures or problems result from the seawater over long periods of time. What is the likely useful life of a marine Yanmar diesel? Thanks for any advice or suggestions. Al Serrato Fidelity 1981 C C 34 San Francisco Bay -- ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Stus-List Magazines
In print: Being a technology / analytical kind of guy I'm a huge Sailing World fan and disagree with the negative comments. They have in depth racing technical / tactical and rules discussions that alone are worth the price of admission. I concede that some of the in-depth stuff reads like a text book but if you make the effort to wade through it, there's much to gain. Plus it comes free if you are a US Sailing member at one of the more reasonable levels.. I also read Sail this one's good for some project stuff, latest gear of course, and the usual far away cruising, the disaster stories (Like that a lot), boat test etc. I was kind of a sucker on this on this one as my dad used to subscribe in the 70's and I dig the nostalgia side. As for the price I got a 2 year subscription deal somewhere online for about 9 bucks.. Couldn't pass it up If you subscribe to Boat US their mag is not very sailing oriented but it is a surprisingly good general boating magazine. Online + One on Good old boat /. Re: Stus-List handicap for after market sprits
Hi Ryan, Locally they gave an adjustment to furlers, and gave the same credit to anyone w a furler, above deck, under deck, Melges, J-105, etc. And many people kept the credit even when they used a sail that didn't furl. Does Scapa have a sprit? How much did they adjust your handicap? Chuck - Original Message - From: Ryan Raber via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Sent: Tuesday, January 20, 2015 11:45:45 AM Subject: Stus-List handicap for after market sprits Peat, This Email below is from my FH in NE but the implementation of the rule was delayed for public comment from our members. The new matrix proposed is provided in the table below: D/L=(dis (lbs.)/2240)/((0.01*WLL(ft))3) %=J*X for sprint length # are adjustment to your rating D/L bow 10% 20% 30% 220 9 6 3 0 150-220 6 3 0 -3 100-150 3 0 -3 -6 100 0 -3 -6 -9 Good morning Ryan Yes, I was there and a new rule has been passed for 2015. Re: Stus-List Teak stain?
I get Watco Teak oil from Home Depot or Lowes. It seems to be very consistent and thinner than typical marine products. One pint can has served me well for many years. I wipe down all the interior wood each spring with Pinesol in a handspray bottle and let it dry. (strategy is to kill any mold spores, while cleaning) It has made a huge difference in the look and smell of the boat. Later, I wipe a little Watco Teak Oil on a terry cloth rag and let it soak into the wood, then wipe off any excess. Gives a nice satin sheen. My only complaint is that the wood has to be above 50 degrees, so this task can't be reasonably done in my boat until March or April. Stus-List CC 110
I'm looking for feedback about the sailing characteristics of the CC 110's shoal draft version. It has a pretty generous sail area to displacement ratio. I often sail solo or short hand with one other crew member and was wondering what size headsail would be appropriate for winds in the 15-20 knot true wind range. I've never sailed on this particular model and have it on my short list of possible new boats. I would love to speak with someone who owns one of these boats If you wouldn't mind spending some time answering a bunch of questions, please drop me a note with a phone number where I can call you. Thanks. And if anybody is looking for a really nice CC 29-2, mine is for sale. http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/40576 Ted Drossos CC 29-2 H2OT Bay Shore, Long Island, NY ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Stus-List Zinc
I had diver remove the 2 blades(prop) and check zinc; there were none! I have since ordered zinc's hoping I got the correct one. The hull looks pretty good but has the coating that can't be disturbed much - $10K fine if they see a cloud. So its basically hand cleaning. The only buildup was on the prop and shaft so hoping the zinc will work. I'm going to polish the 2 blades, heavy little buggers and see if I can get all the blemishes removed. I tried to attach video but it was denied, exceeded limits.. Dan 26' CC ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Re: Stus-List CC 30 one design
Sadly, one 30 was lost in a fire last week: http://www.capitalgazette.com/news/for_the_record/ph-ac-cn-boat-fire-0119-20150118,0,5318626.story The new 30s are a rich man's toy. If anyone in Annapolis wants to write a check for $150k to buy one I'll bring the beer! I hope they sell hundreds, but I'm not betting on it. McConahay just announced a 30, plus there are Farrs and Seascapes, just to name a few, to fragment a small market. Then there is the J monster.
