Jake,

Thanks much for the help offer. I finished the bracing for the keel yesterday.
This morning I head to the yard (if I can find it in this fog…) and we lift the
hull off and move it into the shed. The yard has not really done this before so
I keep showing them pictures of your hull sans keel and saying “we can do this…

Pictures of the keel bracing just posted in my sporadically updated blog.

 Burt,

I’m not sure what model CC you have but the bolts on my 37’ are two sizes,
with the smaller one (keel bolt) directly under the mast. I’m fairly certain
that two different torque values may be called for. I haven’t even measured
them yet but tomorrow I start building a cradle/support in advance of lifting
the hull off of the keel (and removing the rudder) prior to moving the the
hull into the shed for painting. I won’t be tightening the keel until
sometime next late spring but would be interested in what you find when
re-torqueing yours if you drop the keel.

Jake Brodersen (CC 35 MKIII) on the list has done this and he may be a good
source of info. I’ve seen the pictures of his keel and the forward bolt is
 extremely long. Very, very long...

 Good luck.

That is total BS. Not The intent of the ruling at all.

http://www.phrfne.org/page/handicapping/handicap_adjustments

No sprit on the CC, it's to heavy in my opinion to benefit from a sprint. The
faster the boat the better the AW angel so the A-kite can get out in clear air
from the main. That's a big source of controversy though I could be wrong.
The 34r serve me well down wind. Up wind tougher game. The IMX has a 20% sprit
and a 3sec Credit, d/l is around 165. I'm probably going to lose that 3sec
credit with the new rules proposed for next year. It was 1st at the ONE against
all A-boat last year in D2.

Does Scapa have a sprit? How much did they adjust your handicap?

Subject: Stus-List handicap for after market sprits

Peat, This Email below is from my FH in NE but the implementation of the
rule was delayed for public comment from our members. Essentially the new
matrix adds three seconds to my old rating (IMX40) with the same
configuration. There was an extensive study done that revealed asymmetrical
spinnakers have been able to rotate further to Windward to allow deeper
downwind angles then the initial rating system accounted for this?? Other
members don't understand why boats that were built with Sprint are not
penalized or adjusted the same as the boats with sprint added to them
after-the-fact? Our PHRF region has two main groups one more competitive
group in the Marblehead area and one less competitive group comprised of
older vessels in Maine. The boats in MH are 70-80% AS in the race fleet.
There are a group of older WELL maintained (Nelson Mrek,Frers, Taylor, and a
newer 36.7 beny) that go SM and class 5/6 are SM. but all the big boats that
are racing have purchase or converted their boat to AS. And of course all
the new one design fleets are asymmetrical j70…. In Maine its SM except for
the j/105’s and we have limited participation from a few AS Race boats
Farr395, 1D35, Swan club 42… There are 2 conversion sprit boats
participating in Maine next year IMX40 and a Farr43. I feel that
asymmetrical is the way of the future easier to sail and more fun. go at
least 20% or their pain to jibe.

The new matrix proposed is provided in the table below:

 D/L=(dis (lbs.)/2240)/((0.01*WLL(ft))3)
 %=J*X for sprint length
 # are adjustment to your rating

 D/L bow 10% 20% 30%
 220 9 6 3 0
 150-220 6 3 0 -3
 100-150 3 0 -3 -6
 100 0 -3 -6 -9

 Good morning Ryan

Yes, I was there and a new rule has been passed for 2015. The heart of the
issue, as you probably already know, is that for a number of years boats
which changed from a symmetrical spin to an asym were given a credit of up
to 9 sec/mile. PHRFNE is finally recognizing that the credit was a mistake
 in some cases.

I don't know how it will impact your handicap because I don't have access to
the 2014 cert for your boat (I can access only those boats that were in the
GMORA fleet in 2014). But the rule is essentially based on the ratio of
your displacement to LWL. Then depending on that ratio and the length of
your sprit relative to the J measurement, you may see a reduced spinnaker
credit of 3, 6 or 9 sec/mile. By the way, the displacement used will be
based on an empty boat and that number may not be what is on the boat's 2014
 certificate.

PHRFNE will be publishing, shortly, an explanation of the new rule in
layman's terms so that you can understand what has transpired.

I recognize that the above has probably created more questions than answers
 but more will follow soon.

Most people start reading at the beginning of the email and ignore
anything below the senders? signature.

It is just a friendly note asking for a donation to keep the email
list free and take some of the financial burden off me.

To those that don?t know ? I have paid for the hosting, domain name,
etc. since 2006. The list is not sponsored by any outside
party. Like everything else, prices go up every year and each
increase cuts into my fixed income.

Your help is always appreciated.

Dave,

The cap (donut) in the cockpit hold the rudder shaft in the boat. There are
two set screws that must be loosened first. Turning it counterclockwise
will lower the rudder. It's a lot easier to do without any tension on the
rudder shaft. I use a small hydraulic jack and some timbers to take the
pressure off.

The quadrant bolts can be a bear. I've had my rudder out three times now.
Anti-seize is a wonderful thing.

After removing the bolts holding the cap, check to make sure there aren't set
screws inside the threaded holes. The cap should unscrew easily. My shaft has a
threaded hole in which I can screw in an eye bolt. It allows me to attach a
line to the shaft for support, while adjusting the cap.

Alan Bergen

So, I got a little further towards removing the hull today but no joy at the
end of the day.

We were held up trying to removed the bolts holding the quadrant on due to
standard stainless bolts in aluminum thread issues. Once we got that sorted out
near the end of the day we found that we couldn’t drop the rudder shaft.

We loosened the two set screws (bolts really…) and tried to unscrew the
stainless steel cap at the top of the shaft in the cockpit sole with the
thought that this is what holds the assembly in place. We didn’t have much luck
with that initially and started in on the “don’t force it, get a bigger rock!”
theory of mechanics. We have unscrewed it a bit but I’d like to make sure that
I am moving in the right direction. And not totally f’ing things up as is my
wont.

So my question to list is: Am I correct in thinking that the cap is screwed on?
Has anyone done this on a circa early 80’s CC rudder shaft?

Not sure I would say that this particular boat is in the realm of
racer/cruiser that our old CC’s were. It is used as a racer/daysailer
only. Very optimized for racing and extremely well equipped and crewed.
Their team has raced together for a number of years and are very good.
Owned by friends of mine. They finally got enough wind today to do well
against the Farr 280’s and are expecting a good day tomorrow too.

Emails from far afield might emphasise that. The New Age of Sail exhibit, the

year, one of the high points of which was inducting George Cuthbertson and

the Federal Government doesn't change its mind and hangs on to this historic

City of Kingston to help them acquire the land. Otherwise it will be sold to
private developers who will evict the Museum to build more condos. The
Museum does not have enough money to finance a relocation, even if a suitable

Yes, please write your MPs, especially the Conservative ones. This is very

The new 30s are a rich man's toy. If anyone in Annapolis wants to write a check
for $150k to buy one I'll bring the beer! I hope they sell hundreds, but I'm
not betting on it. McConahay just announced a 30, plus there are Farrs and

Stus-List Rudder removal - AKA What I don't know...

Cheers,
Dave Godwin

Not sure I would say that this particular boat is in the realm of
racer/cruiser that our old CCâ?Ts were. It is used as a racer/daysailer only.
Very optimized for racing and extremely well equipped and crewed. Their team
has raced together for a number of years and are very good. Owned by friends of
mine. They finally got enough wind today to do well against the Farr 280â?Ts
and are expecting a good day tomorrow too.
