Hi,

There is a nice web calculator for calculating hull speed, a displacement
corrected hull speed (Gerr), and horsepower dependence on speed.

It shows for the LF38, a Gerr hull speed of 7.22 Knots and required 35.5 HP to
reach 100% of max hull speed. It is interesting to note that 90% of hull
speed is expected to be achieved with under 24 HP.

Re: Stus-List Intimidating Music

2015-07-14 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
Back in the early ‘80s I sailed a “Duck Dodge” race on Cinco de Mayo with a 3
piece Mariachi band in full costume leaning against the push pit rail. They
played throughout the light air race adding significantly to the party
atmosphere but I don’t think any starboard tackers were intimidated.

The boat, a Yamaha 36 named “Made in Japan” was owned by my best friend of
Mexican heritage. His family owned three restaurants that served great tex-mex
style food. He snuck the band out of the restaurant for the race as a joke.

The “Duck Dodge” is held on Lake Union the small lake near downtown Seattle.
It is more of a floating theme party than a race.

There are three screws holding the solar panel to the rest of the unit. It
may take a bit of gentle persuasion to dismantle the panel/o-ring assembly
because it's gooped in place with what appears to be silicone grease. This
is a 6-year-old unit that I have, but I doubt they have changed it that
much. You *have* to be able to change out the battery...

Well it's nice to have a little extra in the auxiliary propulsion system
when steaming into a sea and a strong headwind...the M4-30 and 3 blade
Autoprop on my 35 MKII handles that very well... the M4-30 lower sweet spot
is at 15-1600 rpm sends us along at 5 to 5.5 kts by gps with minimal motor
noise which is really nice for motor cruising around the coves with friends
along.

Stus-List solar vent wiggles, doesn't rotate

2015-07-14 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Nate,

Sounds to me like one of the commutators in the motor is no longer getting
current and that creates a dead spot. I.E your motor is toast.

You can try connecting a good AA battery directly to the motor if you want
to test and know for sure

Here's a good replacement if you or one of your friends is handy with a
soldering iron:
http://store.sundancesolar.com/motor-for-solar-projects-1-5v-to-12v-dc/

You also need to shim it some for a perfect fit. I found out about it on
one of the cruisers forums, the guy reported excellent results. It's a
lot cheaper than a new vent. I just received mine along with a special
Eneloop battery I found on Amazon. I'll report back when I install.

My Nicro 4" solar vent, maybe 4 years old, would not run this season.
I replaced the NI-MH C cell, left it switched off for a couple days to
charge in the sun, and turned it on - it wiggles back and forth a little,
but doesn't rotate - same as the with the old battery.

Re: Stus-List solar vent wiggles, doesn't rotate

2015-07-14 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
That wriggle back and forth sounds like low voltage or a failed sector in the
motor winding. Along with battery charging issues the low voltage could be
caused by corroded connections or wires. It could also be extra load on the
motor from friction but if it goes back and forth I lean towards
voltage/winding issues.

The company I work for does a significant amount of environmental testing on
wire wound assemblies often made with very fine wire. Any chlorides (salt)
present when the windings are exposed to water accelerates corrosion
significantly. I am often surprised on how far the corrosion damage will
work/wick into a coated or encapsulated assembly and not be visible even under
20X magnification.

Re: Stus-List Best Engine? -> hull speed and power required

2015-07-14 Thread PME via CnC-List

Our 34 has the Yanmar 3GM with Martec folding prop. Clean bottom cruising is
5.5, max is about 6. As I recall, your max speed is supposed to be about 80%
of theoretical hull speed with throttle wide open?? Another variable is the
calibration of the knotometer and if using the GPS the impact of current

Re: Stus-List Best Engine?

2015-07-14 Thread jtsails via CnC-List
I’m going to assume that the original poster’s Atomic 4 doesn’t have a
reduction gear. that’s the biggest problem with the A4 , it doesn’t make much
power under 2500rpm and there are not any props that work well above 2500. A
lot of the A4 guys are using Indigo props which will at least get the rpms up
above 2000. My boat has an old never been rebuilt A4 with a 2:1 reduction gear
turning a fixed 16x10 2-blade prop. I cruise at 6.25-6.5 knots at 2750rpms. And
that’s in a 15000 lb 38 ft. There is a lot of discussion over on the Moyer site
about this.

All,

The Enterprise-A was a 1978 C&C 34. The original Yanmar 20HP got her to 6.4
knots (Warp 6.4) with a folding prop.

The best way to maximize your speed is keeping your bottom clean. Have your
boat dived on regularly. During the warmer months, when growth excels, we clean
once a week.

I think this thread started with the notion of a repower. As someone going
through this process now, I would highly recommending against it until you
absolutely have to.

All the best,

Edd

Hi Brian,

After seeing Legacy's speed with a 3GM, I feel less bad about our speed.
I've got a 1978 34 with a 2QM20 and get right around 5.5 with a Mar-Tec
folding prop, too.
I though she was under-powered, but I guess not. I try not to run wide-open,
so I can only guess we'd get to 6kts.
Good news she sips diesel fuel.

sounds like your battery may not be charging. Try checking the
voltage on the battery. If it’s not, the solar cell may not be
functional anymore. I haven’t heard of anyone repairing these, but
maybe someone will have some other ideas.

My Nicro 4" solar vent, maybe 4 years old, would not run this season.

I replaced the NI-MH C cell, left it switched off for a couple days to
charge in the sun, and turned it on - it wiggles back and forth a
little, but doesn't rotate - same as the with the old battery.

Ideas? solutions?

Hi Brian,
After seeing Legacy's speed with a 3GM, I feel less bad about our speed.I've
got a 1978 34 with a 2QM20 and get right around 5.5 with a Mar-Tec folding

Re: Stus-List Best Engine?

2015-07-14 Thread S Thomas via CnC-List
The manufacturer of the engine does not determine horsepower, and that is
really what you are talking about, assuming clean bottom and the right prop.
I am not sure about the range of engines available now from Westerbeke, but
Yanmar makes a range of engine sizes from too small, to much too large for
your application.

Don't forget that the theoretical hull speed for your water line length is
6.82 knots and that to achieve that speed, or go a little faster, requires
an enormous amount of power in getting that last knot. The somewhat larger
boats with a longer water line will require less power to go 7+ knots than
yours will. The power required to drive a displacement boat, or a car for
that matter, increases by approximately the square of the speed until you
get to within a knot or so of the hull speed, and then the ratio starts
going up enormously.

I towed a 30 foot boat with a disabled A4 in it for the last 20 miles coming
back from Ashtabula on the July 4 weekend. My boat has a Yanmar YSB12 which
is rated at 10 hp continuous output. We were able to maintain 4.3 knots with
the engine running at about 80%. I don't have a tach so I don't know the
exact percentage, but it was definitely not flat out, and I had been getting
5.6 knots on the same setting before starting the tow. I was surprised that
we were able to make such speed as we did, considering that the displacement
more that doubled with the tow, but the water was almost flat. Hull speed on
my boat is 6.34 knots.

Hello,

I often sail with a group of sailors that have more modern and somewhat
larger boats than my 1979 C&C34. When there is no wind and we are forced
to motor I have difficulty keeping up. With a clean bottom my cruising
speed is about 5-5.5 knots. I have an Atomic 4 engine. I'm wondering would
a Yanmar or a Westerbeke give me 7+ knots?

Re: Stus-List Best Engine?

2015-07-14 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Brian,
that would be quite an investment.

Realistically, that atomic four, would be giving you about 18hp at about
2600rpm.

I don't know what you have for a prop or how old your engine is or what
condition it is in.

I would, however, direct you over to the Moyer Marine forums. I would ask over
there for ways to get more out of your atomic 4 and try to save the cost of a
diesel repower in a 35 year old boat. Which could be 8, 10, maybe even 15k.

You may be into new mounting rails, new fuel tank, new panel, new exhaust...
Even of you find a reasonable used diesel the labor is extensive. Costs cold
even approach market value of your boat. Especially of you have the work done.
If you do it yourself it is your own time. Whatever value you put on that.
At any rate, the Moyer forum guys might be able to help you get a little more
for a lot less time and money.

Re: Stus-List Best Engine?

Brian,

I can manage 7.2 kts with a clean bottom and the throttle wide open. It's
not something that I do often or recommend. My typical cruising speed is
6.5 kts, which I can achieve at 2,800-2,900 rpm. I have the Yanmar 3GM30F
engine.

You're talking about a lot of expense to go just a little bit faster.

Subject: Stus-List Best Engine?

Hello,

I often sail with a group of sailors that have more modern and somewhat
larger boats than my 1979 C&C34. When there is no wind and we are forced to
motor I have difficulty keeping up. With a clean bottom my cruising speed is
about 5-5.5 knots. I have an Atomic 4 engine. I'm wondering would a Yanmar
or a Westerbeke give me 7+ knots?
