One of the best boat naming stories I have heard resulted in the boat being
called "Dispute". The husband and wife could not agree on a name!

Re: Stus-List boat names

Danny,

Five doctors over here owned a boat together. You never knew who was
aboard at any time as they were all high powered medicos who were on call
to various hospitals. They called their boat "Witchdoctor". It makes more
sense heard than spelled.

Another notable was two fellows I knew well. One was deaf - the other
blind. The blind fellow was the best sail trimmer I've ever seen as he
knew from the tension in the sheets. The deaf guy was the helmsman. There
was always at least one other person aboard as crew. They called their
boat "Hear no Evil - See No Evil".

having done a major repair to the chain plates, repower, and rework of the
centerboard. There are not many C 36's of this vintage however there are a
number of them on the Chesapeake with 3 being in the Hampton Roads area.

Re: Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-17 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I did much the same as Paul. Bought the fabric and new foam at a local
discount fab that had a good selection of upholstery fabric. Cut the foam
myself with an electric carving knife - which turned out to be very easy.
The actual sewing was done by a local shop that specializes in
reupholstering furniture - who were a LOT less expensive than the local
shops who specialize in work for boats. All up, I have a bit over $2400
invested in 3 v-berth cushions, a quarter berth cushion, two settee seats,
and 8 cushions for the backs and arms of the settees. I also had some
largish pillow covers made with a flap and button closure (think of a large
fabric mailing envelope) using some excess fabric. The bed linens for the
four beds on the boat get stored in these throw pillows.

See if, among your cruising friends, there isn't someone who does canvas
repairs and sewing projects as a sideline. I had a friend who is a live
aboard cruiser and does canvas repairs for other cruisers help me figure out
how much fabric, foam, Pfeifertex (backing material like screen so berth
cushions and seat backs can breathe), and binding for the piping on the
edges of the cushions I needed. Her input on fabric selections and
techniques were invaluable.

We had Perception's cushions done a few years ago - had the people who have
done some home furniture recovering do the labour for us, bought the fabric
( a nautical print microfiber) at a local fabric discount store for them.
Old Timers has removed the cost, but it was significantly less than a Marine
place - they replaced any foam that needed replacing. Still looks good. Nice
part is all the cushions are easy to remove from the boat to get the work
done.

I have a 1981 C & C '34 with original cushions. I recently got an estimate
from a local marine canvas shop for replacement of all the fabric (retaining
the original foam) using the lowest cost sunbrella material. I was surprised
to see it was over $4000 for the job, and over $6000 to replace the foam as
well.

I would appreciate any suggestions for alternative ways to go on upgrading
the interior upholstery.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Stevan Plavsa via CnC-List
A host on a radio show I listen to shares the same name, I kept hearing it
every day and it finally clicked "that's going on the list". We kept a long
list on a shared google doc for months, maybe over a year, I can't
remember. It was a process of elimination. We picked a name we thought was
pretty, simple as that. When we looked it up:

"Suhana" means "pleasing," "charming" and "lovely" in Hindi.
"Suhana" means "pleasant" in Urdu.
"Suhana" is a star in Arabic.

so it worked too (astronomy is my other 'thing') and of course, I didn't
spend all this money on something I didn't think was pleasing, charming and
lovely.

Toronto is a very multicultural place so while the old timer whiteys at the
club don't get it (and insist on calling my boat "Susanna") I know there
are people around that do.

Someone on the list when I was going through this recommended three "A"s in
a name. If I could do it over, I probably would have gone with Sahana.

Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-17 Thread robert via CnC-List

Al:
Several years back, we had all new upholstery for our C 32used the
original foam as there was nothing wrong with it.chose a Sunbrella
fabric...didn't put the Sunbrella on the bottom of the cushions to save
on material cost(s).chose a fabric similar in color but not the
Sunbrella brand.

We went to a canvas store that mainly does canvas awnings for businesses
but they do the occasional boat. They did a respectable jobnot .a
perfect joba few of the corners on some of the cushions were not
uniform but the average person won't notice that on a +30 year boat.

All in cost(s) materials and labor was around $1,800 plus 15% tax. Shop
around but choose a fabric that is conducive to the marine
environment. I wouldn't choose just any fabric because of the price.

I have a 1981 C & C '34 with original cushions. I recently got an estimate from
a local marine canvas shop for replacement of all the fabric (retaining the
original foam) using the lowest cost sunbrella material. I was surprised to see it
was over $4000 for the job, and over $6000 to replace the foam as well.

I would appreciate any suggestions for alternative ways to go on upgrading the
interior upholstery.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Naming a boat is almost as hard as naming a child.

I'd consider the names of some of the old America's Cup boats - courageous,
intrepid etc. I also like the names of the Navy academy boats such as
gallant, defiant.

I had a neighbor who named his boat White Star, then found out that was the
line that owned the Titanic. I'd avoid those! I considered naming my boat
after a particularly litigious opponent, as she paid for it!

Good ting you have a large transom, because after you put Mattapoisett on
the transom there may not be room for too much else.

foam, and sunbrella. we used a local upholstery guy that worked out of a shop

Love that Toronto is so culturally diverse and literally nothing offends me but
hypocrisy. Imagine if the proudly progressive people up there heard someone use
the term “blackys”.

Where’s the outrage?

A host on a radio show I listen to shares the same name, I kept hearing it
every day and it finally clicked "that's going on the list". We kept a long
list on a shared google doc for months, maybe over a year, I can't remember. It
was a process of elimination. We picked a name we thought was pretty, simple as
that. When we looked it up:

"Suhana" means "pleasing," "charming" and "lovely" in Hindi.

"Suhana" means "pleasant" in Urdu.

"Suhana" is a star in Arabic.

so it worked too (astronomy is my other 'thing') and of course, I didn't spend
all this money on something I didn't think was pleasing, charming and lovely.

Toronto is a very multicultural place so while the old timer whiteys at the
club don't get it (and insist on calling my boat "Susanna") I know there are
people around that do.

Someone on the list when I was going through this recommended three "A"s in a
name. If I could do it over, I probably would have gone with Sahana.

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
When I was a teenager we had a McVay Minuette. Is a 19 ft boat based off the
Bluenose Sloop design with a full keel and attached rudder etc... Had a lot of
fun with that boat. We would sheet everything in tight and turn beam on to
wind to see how far we could heel the boat. Usually the leeward rail, winch,
coaming and seat were under water. Decided to name the boat. Took out a
Thesaurus and looked up synonyms for heeling. The two candidates were Flat Out
and Full Tilt. We chose Full Tilt

Many years later when my wife and I purchased our first boat it was a Paceship
P23. I wanted to call it Full Tilt 2. My wife wanted to name it after our
daughters Chelsea and Sarah and name it Chelsara. Both were rejected and we
opted for their nicknames and called the boat Monkeybear. Our friends thought
it the worst name ever and when the boat was eventually sold it was promptly
renamed "Steady Pace"

Our next boat was a Hinterhoeller Niagara 26. It was called "Waratah II" which
is something of a nice breeze in Swahili or some other language. The name had
to go. Was getting pressure at home to get a second cat as a pet. The
compromise was if I relented and allowed another pet I would be able to name
the boat what I wanted (she knew would be full tilt 2). What was not known was
the name was going on port and starbord aft and was over five feet long and a
foot high so that it could be read. Was in the Blade Runner font so looked
fast even. Was the best combination of font, bold size and name I could have
used. The next owners have kept the name and still race the boat

After a number of years we no longer needed a cabin so we sold the Niagara and
purchased a J27. The boat came with the name "Nut Case". We liked the name
and kept it. Previous names for that boat were "Lickety Split" and "Reckless
Disregard". I would have kept any of those three names. Once sold the boat
was eventually renamed "Line Drive"

Our current boat came with the name Persistence prominently displayed on the
transom. "Padanaram" was also there and took us a while to learn to pronounce
(until some people from that area happened by one day). I liked the name
Persistence and the fact that it was already on the boat made me like it more.
Was getting pressured to change the name to Nut Case or something similar so I
registered the boat as Persistence V out of Halifax and just changed the port
on the transom

Sometimes the simplest solution is to keep the name already with the boat when
you purchased it. Unless of course you hate that name

I thought one of the most unique names was on a race boat - WOFTAM - used to be

while (may still be?). Waste of F.. Time and Money.

OK coming up with a new name for our new boat is proving very difficult.

I thought I would throw it out to you guys for some ideas!

Maybe you came across something sometime and thought wow what a great name
for a boat!

I can't believe this is so difficult... Lol

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket with harness recommendation

2015-09-17 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
> On the other hand, if I had been unconscious, i believe that the pfd would
> have kept my head above water and kept me alive.

This may be the key point.

One of the times I have found myself un-expectedly in the water I was knocked
senseless or unconscious when I hit my head on the outside of the toe rail on
an aluminum Frers 46. It was April in Puget Sound with a water temp around 50F.

During a panic, lazy sheet spinnaker drop with an crew of Japanese sailors
(their English was limited, my Japanese non-existent) one of the Japanese
sailors snubbed down the halyard as I was gathering in the sail near the
cockpit. As the sail popped full again I was launched off the deck, my feet
tangled in the lifelines spinning me upside down, my head bounced off the toe
rail and I fell into the water. No life jacket, full foulweather gear and
boots.

Fortunately I came to my senses still holding onto the spinnaker sheet and
close to the boat. My first awareness that something was amiss was the image
of a bunch of Japanese people pulling me up, back aboard. The next was one of
them was attempting to stop the blood flow from my head while I returned to
gathering in the sail as we still needed it down. I ended up in the ER getting
8 stitches just above my eyebrow later that night.

If I had not held onto the spinnaker line I am convinced I would have struggled
to stay afloat. My winter weight foulweather jacket was lined and would soak
up water. My boots would have prevented much success in treading water. The
owner/driver was left onboard the boat that was being blown towards shore by
the sudden squall and the out of control spinnaker. He would not have been
able to steer towards me until the spinnaker was doused.

This experience is one of the main reasons I wear an auto-inflating pfd 99% of
the time the boat is underway.

I had my jacket inflate this summer. I was helming a J24 in a race on a very
light air day and was slouched against the lifeline in a state of sheer
boredom...when (i'm sure you see this coming) the shackle gave way and suddenly
i was in the water.

The jacket inflated like it was supposed to but i did find it very awkward to
move around and to try and lift myself back on the boat. I was quite surprised
at my lack of mobility. On the other hand, if I had been unconscious, i
believe that the pfd would have kept my head above water and kept me alive.

Re: Stus-List Indicator lights for breaker panel

2015-09-17 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Jim,

I have same 12 volt panel, but my 120 volt panel has larger amber lights.

The red lights on the 12 volt panel are all on a single circuit board.
Luckily only the top one failed so far, so I was able to remove the corner
of the board. The 1/4 inch light fit, but now I need to find the little
clips that look like speed nuts to hold the light in place.

The 120 volt lights have the clips on them.

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Janko Puls via CnC-List
Ahoy,

When the time came, we were weighing heavily on a new boat name. My sailing
partner was more on the side of Greek Proto-godesses like 'Ananke', which I
found a bit much for a decent but modest 30-footer. I wanted to avoid silly
stuff, though it always cracks me up to see puns like 'Reel Estate' [which BTW
was a motorboat under tow] 'E-Z Pass' and such. Anyway, we battled for weeks
over bird names, wind names, sea names, etc.pp. I thought the name should be
clear and practical on the radio, reflect our personalities and especially the
personality of the vessel, and after long discussions we came down to the core
of things.

'Messing About' is was. People who know the 1908 novel 'The Wind in the
Willows' by Kenneth Grahame laugh out loud right away when they see it. People
who don't know the book still get a kick out of it. Recently I stumbled unto
the book shop 'Toad Hall' in Rockport (near Gloucester, MA), and it really
cracked them up as well. The only problem in encountered so far are radio
calls: "US Coast Guard, US Coast Guard, this is the sailing vessel 'Messing
About'." Well, so be it. It depends on your performance (and I tell you, it
turns out to be a tongue twister, especially when being tired. Please read it
out loud if you don't believe me).

To explain why we chose this name, I quote for y'all the beginning of this
wonderful story:

"What?" cried the Rat, open-mouthed: "Never been in a—you never—well I—what
have you been doing, then?"
"Is it so nice as all that?" asked the Mole shyly, though he was quite prepared
to believe it as he leant back in his seat and surveyed the cushions, the oars,
the rowlocks, and all the fascinating fittings, and felt the boat sway lightly
under him.
"Nice? It's the only thing," said the Water Rat solemnly as he leant forward
for his stroke. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolute
nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply
messing," he went on dreamily: "messing—about—in—boats; messing—"
"Look ahead, Rat!" cried the Mole suddenly.
It was too late. The boat struck the bank full tilt. The dreamer, the joyous
oarsman, lay on his back at the bottom of the boat, his heels in the air.
"—about in boats—or with boats," the Rat went on composedly, picking himself up
with a pleasant laugh. "In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems
really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you
don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere
else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you
never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always
something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not.
Look here! If you've really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we
drop down the river together, and have a long day of it?"

“The Wind in the Willows”, Kenneth Grahame, 1908

cheers

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket - inflation

2015-09-17 Thread Graham Collins via CnC-List
I did a safety at sea course, which involved spending some quality time
in the pool wearing full gear and my PFD (inflated). I found it
difficult to maneuver with it fully inflated, but could let some out and
was able to do the required stuff (swim, climb into the liferaft) with
it on. For me a crotch strap add-on does make it easier as it keeps
things lower, I tried it both ways.

As for re-boarding, a ladder isn't much good if it does not get a couple
of rungs under water - not many of us can lift our body weight and wet
gear up with our arms, when already exhausted. We also bought a
lifesling and have tackle ready in case someone has to be hoisted aboard.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I wanted to get some feedback on a
recent event in our marina that has a lot of us talking.

We have some friends that own a cruising boat. The wife has been a
little hesitant about sailing in part because of poor swimming ability
causing a general fear of water. She decided to confront her fears
head on by volunteering to do a live person overboard drill. We got a
bunch of people on board their boat and enlisted a smaller boat as a
chase boat. She put on an inflatable life jacket with an expiring
sensor and jumped in the water in the harbor. It was at the end of a
stretch of hot weather so there were fewer fears about hypothermia and
the waves were negligible, which is as good as it gets for Lake Michigan.

The PFD inflated immediately and brought her to the surface just fine,
but she found that the inflated bladder pretty much immobilized her.
She could not lift her head properly or move her arms to maneuver to
the throwables in the water. One of the people in the chase boat
ultimately jumped in to get her over to her boat and we got her back
up on deck, but it was a more tense process than any of us expected.
Our friend confronting her fears was actually satisfied with the
result, she was able to remain calm and ultimately got back on the
boat without injury, but it raised some doubts about inflatable PFD’s
with the rest of us.

Anyone have experience with actually deploying an inflatable PFD?
Were you able to maneuver? Did you need to partially deflate the bladder?

As a side note, we have gone looking for a good quality non-inflatable
PFD with a harness and crotch strap, which is becoming a requirement
for some races now and pretty much came up empty at this point.

Re: Stus-List boat names we don't like now - renaming ceremony

2015-09-17 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
There are probably many options for the proper renaming ceremony, but the one I
am aware of has to be done on water and involves reversing (preferably under
sail). If you search on the internet a number of options would show up. I found
one that involved scuttling the boat (under the old name) and refloating it
(under the new one). We might be superstitious, but I am not sure if that would
work so well.

Regardless of what you do, make sure that you appease the Sea Gods (Poseidon,
Neptune or some other one of your liking) and the God of Wind (Aeolus). This
includes, but is not limited to, spilling and drinking serious amounts of
alcoholic beverages of various kinds. Apparently, champagne is not the only one
that can be used.

Good luck

Not very fond of that... However, I think I'm going to keep it for the

I don't want to change the name without the proper ceremony... I'm led to
believe, the boat should be on the hard and a proper christening ceremony with
champagne is in order. I'm not taking any chances!

When my new boat came to me the original name "E-Z Rockin'" had just been
changed to "Black Magic". Now I like Santana as much as anyone, but I was
afraid Neptune might not know that tune, and would take it as an affront,
(bad juju?) so am immediately changing it to "Mahalo" which is Hawaiian for
Thank You, Gratitude, Respect, etc. The boat was such a good deal this only
seemed appropriate.

Mike Fulmor
C 37 "Mahalo"

When we were choosing our boat name recently we had a few guidelines:
- No puns, silly names, or motor boat names ("Master Baiter")
- Relatively easy to pronounce, spell, and understand over the VHF
- Uniqueness - some names are very common (Amazing Grace, Second Wind,
etc) and it'd be unfortunate to have the same name as someone else in the
marina or sailing region. Ideally it'd even be unique in the US Coast Guard
database (which you can check online), in case you ever want to become a
documented vessel.

If you're into music, a lot of our ideas revolved around song names - High
Hopes (Pink Floyd), An Awesome Wave (Alt-J), Tessellate (Alt-J).

Although some names - like An Awesome Wave - can seem like they're
tempting the fates / sea gods. I wouldn't pick a name like Rogue Wave
because for one it might be bad luck, and if you ever do get into trouble,
people will say "I told you so."

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
A few years ago we spent the night at Gulfport (MS) Yacht Club prior to a
race. Just after dawn a T-storm rolled through. We heard a click-POW!! as
lightning struck extremely close by. I jumped out of bed to assess
damage. I poked my head up the companionway hatch to look and saw another
boat had taken an empty slip next to us during the night. The boat's
name? "Lightning Rod".

My first boat was named "Luffer" when I bought it. That was just not me.
I had just returned from a trip to New Zealand where I saw the Whitbread
Race venue. It was the year "Steinlager 2" won. I renamed the boat
"Steinlocker".

I saw a lot of their bumper stickers that summer on cars with Minnesota plates;

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket with harness recommendation

2015-09-17 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
The point of these inflatables is to give you enough buoyancy to keep your head
and shoulders up out of the water, and lean you on your back to keep you from
inhaling the ocean. You cannot possibly try to swim forward like that; but
since you’re on your back already, try the backstroke. It works fairly well.

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket with harness recommendation

2015-09-17 Thread Jim Reinardy via CnC-List
This is a bit of a tangent, but I wanted to get some feedback on a recent event
in our marina that has a lot of us talking.

We have some friends that own a cruising boat. The wife has been a little
hesitant about sailing in part because of poor swimming ability causing a
general fear of water. She decided to confront her fears head on by
volunteering to do a live person overboard drill. We got a bunch of people on
board their boat and enlisted a smaller boat as a chase boat. She put on an
inflatable life jacket with an expiring sensor and jumped in the water in the
harbor. It was at the end of a stretch of hot weather so there were fewer
fears about hypothermia and the waves were negligible, which is as good as it
gets for Lake Michigan.

The PFD inflated immediately and brought her to the surface just fine, but she
found that the inflated bladder pretty much immobilized her. She could not
lift her head properly or move her arms to maneuver to the throwables in the
water. One of the people in the chase boat ultimately jumped in to get her
over to her boat and we got her back up on deck, but it was a more tense
process than any of us expected. Our friend confronting her fears was actually
satisfied with the result, she was able to remain calm and ultimately got back
on the boat without injury, but it raised some doubts about inflatable PFD’s
with the rest of us.

Anyone have experience with actually deploying an inflatable PFD? Were you
able to maneuver? Did you need to partially deflate the bladder?

As a side note, we have gone looking for a good quality non-inflatable PFD with
a harness and crotch strap, which is becoming a requirement for some races now
and pretty much came up empty at this point.

Thanks,

Jim Reinardy

My last boat was a Lightning that was officially named TBA (to be announced).
At each regatta, the crew came up with a new name for the weekend and used
electrical tape to apply it to the boat. The Seinfeld tv show was big at that
time and provided lots of good names. A few of my favorites were “sponge
worthy”, “shrinkage”, “spectackular”, but my favorite was “clockwise swirl”
which was used for a match race weekend.

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket with harness recommendation

2015-09-17 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
A rescue swimmer can NOT use an inflatable, you are not going anyplace fast.
They don’t all pin your arms, but I don’t know how to find out except blow the
thing up. My son had a hybrid inflatable when he was around 4 or 5 and used to
LOVE to make it blow up. He could still sort of paddle around and his arms were
free.
On to the greater issue, I have had to do a few MOB recoveries and it is about
1,000 times harder to get an injured, overweight, frozen, or otherwise
non-agile person out of the water than you would think before you try it. I
once had an overweight 60+ year old lady dive off for MOB practice on a hot day
and I had to tow her back to Annapolis. We had no ladder on the school boat and
we would have hurt her quite badly trying to haul her up by her arms if we
could have even done it. Dislocating an arm or breaking a rib looked quite
likely. You also cannot imagine the teasing I got for towing a 300 pound women
up Back Creek to Port Annapolis.

Jim,

Did the PFD have crotch straps? I've only seen demos luckily, but it seems
like the straps will keep the vest closer to the body which should give a
marginal increase in mobility. Too many sea nettles to try it anytime soon!

Re: Stus-List boat names

2015-09-17 Thread Jim Reinardy via CnC-List
My favorite boat name story comes from a situation I would not recommend for
anyone. A fried of ours bought a boat and arranged for a mooring. When he got
to the mooring ball, he noticed that the line on the ball was pretty worn, but
didn't think much of it. Of course, with the next big wind, the boat broke
loose with nobody aboard. She was at one end of a large mooring field and the
wind pushed the boat away from the field, but toward the seawall at the end of
the marina. The owner got a call from the marina, rushed down and found the
boat aground on a sand bar between two rock outcroppings undamaged. The boat
was immediately named "Field Goal".

Joel,

This PFD was an older Mustang model without crotch straps. I do think the unit
being loose around the waist contributed to the issues. The top of the vest
did come in at an angle and slid up a bit on inflation. I notice that there is
a crotch strap add on for my Mustang hydrostatic PFD, I am thinking about it.

Stus-List Reboarding - was Re: - Inflable life jacket - inflation

2015-09-17 Thread Dr. Mark Bodnar via CnC-List

I've read a lot about people being unable to climb back aboard a
boat (never experienced the issue on anything bigger than an
Albacore).
One recommendation I'm looking to try - a triangular section of
fabric (I'm thinking the head off an old jib) - shackle the bottom
corners to the toe rail and attach the head to a halyard
Get the overboard crew to lay in the hollow of the sail as it bags
down and then winch the halyard.
You automatically get a 2-1 advantage by pulling up only one end in
addition to using gear that is already set on the boat.  Plus the
person is already lying down in the sail and will roll right back in
under the lifelines rather than having to winch them up overtop.

I think my current jib is ready to retire - and maybe this is a
perfect use for the head of the sail.

Interested to hear thoughts from people who have actually tried
different techniques.  I've yet to do MOB drills - it's in the plan,
but never seems to fit the day.

We have some friends that own a cruising boat.  The wife
has been a little hesitant about sailing in part because of
poor swimming ability causing a general fear of water.  She
decided to confront her fears head on by volunteering to do
a live person overboard drill.  We got a bunch of people on
board their boat and enlisted a smaller boat as a chase
boat.  She put on an inflatable life jacket with an expiring
sensor and jumped in the water in the harbor.  It was at the
end of a stretch of hot weather so there were fewer fears
about hypothermia and the waves were negligible, which is as
good as it gets for Lake Michigan.

The PFD inflated immediately and brought her to the surface
just fine, but she found that the inflated bladder pretty
much immobilized her.  She could not lift her head properly
or move her arms to maneuver to the throwables in the
water.  One of the people in the chase boat ultimately
jumped in to get her over to her boat and we got her back up
on deck, but it was a more tense process than any of us
expected.  Our friend confronting her fears was actually
satisfied with the result, she was able to remain calm and
ultimately got back on the boat without injury, but it
raised some doubts about inflatable PFD’s with the rest of
us.

Anyone have experience with actually deploying an
inflatable PFD?  Were you able to maneuver?  Did you need to
partially deflate the bladder?

As a side note, we have gone looking for a good quality
non-inflatable PFD with a harness and crotch strap, which is
becoming a requirement for some races now and pretty much
came up empty at this point.

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket - inflation

2015-09-17 Thread Jim Reinardy via CnC-List
The theory for getting her back on board was interesting. The boat is an
Ericson Cruising 36 with very high topsides and no swim ladder. We tied off a
line on a stern dockline cleat, draped the line in the water and loaded the
other end on a winch. The boat owner was hoping she could stand on the line
and just get pulled up on the winch. In practice, we had a difficult time
getting her to a point where she could do this. We had a lifesling with the
tackle on board if we had needed it.

I have a lifesling on my boat, but not the lifting tackle. I am thinking
harder about making that an offseason purchase. Thanks for the thoughtful
replies, everyone!

I've had very good results using the main sheet as a lifting tackle. A
snap shackle came rigged to the traveler car by the PO. I pop the snap
shackle off the traveler and hand it down to the MOB or the helper. Make
the shackle and then mainsheet the victim in. I can see that it may be
challenging and have various levels of success on different boats. It gave
me a lot of confidence.

One thing to consider is a how to "clip" the victim on if they are
incapacitated. There are kong caribbeaners that deploy from the end of an
appropriate boat hook. This is my plan.

The drooped rope and primary winch trick was Practical Sailor's first
choice for a conscious victim. Clearly methods work better or worse on
different boats.

I found a local guy on Kijiji (more popular than Craigslist in Canada - same
concept) that had a workshop in his basement, and did upholstery out of that
for a living. Professional marine stores quoted me $4000-6500. I got all new
interior cushions with new foam for $1900 from this local guy. Figured for that
price, I can handle some imperfection. But it looks great!‎ So my tip is - shop
around, even online.

We replaced all the cushions completely on our 35 when we bought her in
2006, the new cushions are 4" HD foam except for the V-berth cushions,
which have another 2" of memory foam on top. We used the best materials
throughout and had the job done by a pro. $4300 all in.

Re: Stus-List - Inflable life jacket - inflation

2015-09-17 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Some things that made it easier in my situation are that we have lifeline
gates on port and stbd exactly where they need to be. The boom is also
particularly high compared to most boats. I have a rigid vang and a
topping lift so again the boat is already well rigged. LifeSling actually
recommends using a halyard. Seems very inconvenient to me since I would
have to lower the mainsail, go forward and disconnect the halyard, fish the
halyard back appropriately through the lazy jacks, and then only be able to
winch the victim onboard. I have a double ended mainsheet so if the
cam-cleat and fiddle block at the victim gets too hard then I can move to
the winch and grind them the rest of the way.

There is a lot of info on that. Some interesting reading can be found on US

I've read a lot about people being unable to climb back aboard a boat (never
experienced the issue on anything bigger than an Albacore).
One recommendation I'm looking to try - a triangular section of fabric (I'm
thinking the head off an old jib) - shackle the bottom corners to the toe
rail and attach the head to a halyard
Get the overboard crew to lay in the hollow of the sail as it bags down and
then winch the halyard.
You automatically get a 2-1 advantage by pulling up only one end in addition
to using gear that is already set on the boat. Plus the person is already
lying down in the sail and will roll right back in under the lifelines
rather than having to winch them up overtop.

I think my current jib is ready to retire - and maybe this is a perfect use
for the head of the sail.

Interested to hear thoughts from people who have actually tried different
techniques. I've yet to do MOB drills - it's in the plan, but never seems
to fit the day.

I did a safety at sea course, which involved spending some quality time in
the pool wearing full gear and my PFD (inflated). I found it difficult to
maneuver with it fully inflated, but could let some out and was able to do
the required stuff (swim, climb into the liferaft) with it on. For me a
crotch strap add-on does make it easier as it keeps things lower, I tried it
both ways.

As for re-boarding, a ladder isn't much good if it does not get a couple of
rungs under water - not many of us can lift our body weight and wet gear up
with our arms, when already exhausted. We also bought a lifesling and have
tackle ready in case someone has to be hoisted aboard.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I wanted to get some feedback on a recent
event in our marina that has a lot of us talking.

We have some friends that own a cruising boat. The wife has been a little
hesitant about sailing in part because of poor swimming ability causing a
general fear of water. She decided to confront her fears head on by
volunteering to do a live person overboard drill. We got a bunch of people
on board their boat and enlisted a smaller boat as a chase boat. She put on
an inflatable life jacket with an expiring sensor and jumped in the water in
the harbor. It was at the end of a stretch of hot weather so there were
fewer fears about hypothermia and the waves were negligible, which is as
good as it gets for Lake Michigan.

The PFD inflated immediately and brought her to the surface just fine, but
she found that the inflated bladder pretty much immobilized her. She could
not lift her head properly or move her arms to maneuver to the throwables in
the water. One of the people in the chase boat ultimately jumped in to get
her over to her boat and we got her back up on deck, but it was a more tense
process than any of us expected. Our friend confronting her fears was
actually satisfied with the result, she was able to remain calm and
ultimately got back on the boat without injury, but it raised some doubts
about inflatable PFD's with the rest of us.

Anyone have experience with actually deploying an inflatable PFD? Were you
able to maneuver? Did you need to partially deflate the bladder?

As a side note, we have gone looking for a good quality non-inflatable PFD
with a harness and crotch strap, which is becoming a requirement for some
races now and pretty much came up empty at this point.

Thanks,

Jim Reinardy
