On the 38, we need pieces over 6’ in length (if you want to follow the original
pattern). UPS won’t ship sheets in that length and Mcmaster doesn’t sell it
that long without freight shipping charges.

Rick,

It will bend. Seems a little less bendy than Plexiglas.

I just went out to my shop and grabbed a piece and bent it to about a 2-3 foot
radius. I had the Admiral take a pic which I'll send you off list.

Re: Stus-List Thin plastic sheet for headliner access and other uses

2016-02-19 Thread jtsails via CnC-List
Rick,
I’m in the middle of this project on my boat. I went with Wally’s suggestion
and used “foamed pvc sheet”. Flex seems to be similar to the luan ply. Look at
the headliner part of wally’s page. I’m putting it up with no painting or
finish and it looks really nice. Very easy to work with, rough cut it with a
jigsaw and finish cut with a router/laminate trimming bit using the old panels
as a pattern. Easy to do and came out perfect. The only hard part to the job is
removing the old adhesive that the velcro left on the fiberglass liner. I still
haven’t found a solvent that will disolve it and have resorted to sanding it
off. I got the material in 4’x8’ sheets from Piedmont Plastics in Raleigh for
$35 a sheet. 3 sheets to replace all of it with a half a sheet left over. Not
done yet, but I think that I am going to be very happy with the results...

Many years ago in a previous life, I was racing a Porsche 911. I was lucky to
get some small sponsorship from Red Line Racing Oil, which was new at the time.
That was good. The rep also suggested I use their brand new transmission oil in
the gearbox and I said yes, because I was having some transmission overheating
problems at the time. Wrong decision, as the oil was so slippery that the thing
would not shift….. After talking to the tech people at Red Line, they realized
that the 911 transmission used friction rings for the synchromesh mechanism and
their oil wasn’t allowing the friction rings to do their thing.

I can easily see that the choice of oil in your boat transmission would keep
anything inside that relies on friction to not work correctly.

Some of the transmissions are oil bath, and some share the oil with the engine.
If that oil is one of the newer oils it may have friction modifiers in it which
can
be too slippery. When first going into reverse the symptom is poor power and
excess force on the "gear" shifter.

I have an atomic 4 and a straight ( non-V ) Paragon. Reverse operates by
clamping
a band around the planetary gear hub. The clamping is performed by pulling a
wedge shaped bar in a slot. There is no locking mechanism to hold the bar in
place
but after I switched oils the friction in the cable ( which is brand new ) is
enough.

Initially I had to pull continuously on reverse to back out of the slip, and it
seemed
that there was little power for 2 - 8 boat lengths. Then everything was good.

I switched to Castrol Grand Prix Motorcycle - Four Stroke that is advertised as
being wet clutch compatible.

http://answers.canadiantire.ca/answers/9045/product/0281826P/castrol-castrol-grand-prix-motorcycle-four-stroke-questions-answers/questions.htm

After the second oil change the difference was significant. I can pull up into
reverse, no need to hold it, and there is full power in about 1/2 boat length.

Also. lots of prop walk now ;-)

being wet clutch compatible.

http://answers.canadiantire.ca/answers/9045/product/0281826P/castrol-castrol-grand-prix-motorcycle-four-stroke-questions-answers/questions.htm

After the second oil change the difference was significant. I can pull up into
reverse, no need to hold it, and there is full power in about 1/2 boat length.

Also. lots of prop walk now ;-)

This is a wild guess, but Jason, do you have your subscription settings
configured to get a daily digest instead of individual messages? That
might be the issue. It's easier to respond to individual threads if you
get each message separately.

I started out with daily digests but switched to separate messages. I have
a gmail rule set up to divert all the C list emails to their own folder
so they don't fill up my inbox.

I use the mail archive CnC list, at the bottom of the page it provides a spot

Not sure how your email system works but some, notably gmail, will include
part of the original thread if you highlight it.

For instance, see the text below. I highlighted about 2/3 of your original

I bought the one West Marine is selling last year during a similar sale. I
returned it. Problem was the waist belt would not stay tight or in same
position. I would tighten, 5 minutes later it was loose... If I ended up in
the water, it would have immediately ridden up and limited my mobility and
effective flotation. I would pass on this one.

Hi,

I have the paragon SAOV / Walter RV-10D V-drive transmission combo on my 3QM30.
I have not experienced any clicks or reverse slips outs. My paragon has a
serial # tag from Marine Transmission Inc out of Ft lauderdale, FL.I called
them to get a replacement dipstick (mine was missing) and during the discussion
found out that the tag meant that they recently rebuilt my transmission.

Gives these guys a call. They are very knowable, have replacement parts for
both the paragon and v-drive, and of course will rebuild them.

Correction, we got the "Coastal" version which has better neck padding
than the inshore..

Anyway, we like them, but check the bobbins, they might be out of date.

We have not tested them in the water yet but probably will when the
weather is more conducive since West was nice enough to send free service
kits it'll be fun to see how they actually work.

Jason,

I had several “issues” with my transmission. I have the service manual on it
and did a complete adjustment according to the manual and it now works
satisfactorily.
I do not have to hold it in reverse with the shifting lever. However, if there
was no friction in the shifting cable I don’t see how it would stay in reverse
gear. As mentioned in another email,
“in reverse you are applying pressure to a band that is around a drum. The
harder you push the lever in reverse that stronger the engagement.”

Hi

My landfall has the paragon v-drive transmission system. When I go forward it
feels like the leaver “clicks” into place, however, when going in reverse it
feels like it is just friction that is holding it in gear. The problem I am
experiencing is that when in reverse and the rpm’s are up the leaver slips out
of gear. The only way it stays in reverse is to hold the leaver down. I have
tried adjusting the cable tension bolt under the deck to no avail, cable
becomes to hard to move. I am wondering if this is just an issue with my boat
or have others experienced similar problems. If you have had this happen what
is the fix. From what I can find no one really deals with these old
transmission any more. Any help that can be offered is appreciated.

Stus-List Sale alert automatic inflatable harness

2016-02-19 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
If you buy them make sure you check the bobbin. The bobbin has a 4 year
shelf life and a couple of mine were past-due or really close. A five
minute phone call to West was all it took to get 4 free service kits
including new C02 cartridges and bobbins.. We got them within 3 days.

I bought 4 of the "inshore" versions to protect my family at the cyber
monday sale for about $110.00 a piece in November. We like them a lot,
they are nice and lightweight and at least with winter clothing, you
forget you're wearing them about 5 minutes after putting them on.

The idea was to wear them mostly during the winter (Concerned with
possible hypothermia) I think we'll wear 'em whenever it's blowing.. I
think even in a T-shirt, you'd hardly feel you the thing on.

Re: Stus-List Micron Extra?

2016-02-19 Thread Bill Bina - gmail via CnC-List
There are quite a few other paints in the line that contain the same
"Biolux" version of Irgarol, and they are all still listed and
advertised. The new "Extra 2" also contains it. I thought that the
shortage of Irgarol last year was a temporary situation. Other
manufacturers all seem to still have it as well, after a 1 season
shortage. I think this mystery is deeper than that.

Just a note about the Spinlock harness, which most offshore sailors think is
the best harness going: I have spoken to the company reps and the reason it's
not CG certified is that the process is so long and expensive that it isn't

Hi,

Another lister and I are going to place an order to McMaster-Carr for 1/2-inch
EDPM foam cord. Since it only comes in 100-ft lengths, we are looking for two
more listers interested in joining for a total 4 way split amounting to 25-ft
of cord for ~$20 including all shipping costs(based on USPS Priority).

That’s $0.52/ft ($0.80/ft w/ shipping). Here’s the link to EDPM material:
