We had a mild winter this year (first one in a few years...global warming is only a rumour in Canada) so I'm hoping for a decent summer this year. Should be a good year to do Atlantic Canada. I did the Bras d Or lakes last summer in July it was a little wet and cool (cold summer) but Aug was nice. If your going to do the Bras d Or, which is very nice, you will be traveling the Eastern Shore (Halifax to Cape Breton) which is very nice also. It's rugged and remote with lots of isolated and protected anchorages, I enjoyed it very much and may do it again this year along with NFLD.

Bev,
So fun going by memory. When I splashed Beemer in December, I had a wonderful
stream of water from my stuffing box. Unscrewed and added one loop of packing.
All dry after. 90% certain it was 3/8 thick.
As Russ mentioned, other than a stream of water (not bad), easy to do while
boat is in the water.

Re: Stus-List Defender sale - LED nav lights

2016-04-01 Thread Eric Frank via CnC-List
Allen, If you mean that combination masthead light (steaming and anchoring)
that Aqua Signals provides, I just replaced the bulbs in mine with LEDs from
MarineBeam LED Lighting. They work perfectly. The tricolor steaming light
actually has a three color bulb, which makes all 3 colors very bright. I did
replace the old lens, though, which was crazed after years of weathering at the
top of the mast. Defender sells the replacement. Only 0.1 boat buck!

Here was my order, but check their website to make sure they fit your
AquaSignal light. Mine is series 40, I think.

BAY15d Replacement LED Bulb for Aqua Signal Series 40, 50 & 55
(Output Color: Cool White (for clear lenses))
TW-1157-60-CW 1 $27.00 USD $27.00 USD

Hi John,

It sounds like the shoulder season there is
similar to our "nice days" winter & early spring
cruising. We were at Newcastle Island all of
Easter Weekend. (Hey Jim, don't tell them how far we had to go.)

Here's what I use (portable Buddy) to take the
chill off in the cabin while I'm making morning
coffee. Very safe, the Admiral can trip it off
just by shifting the rug it sits on.

This assumes you have already have a propane gas
detector for the galley stove and never leave the heater unattended.

So I’m starting to get Paws (and me) ready
for the next round of extended cruising. It
took eight years to recover from the last
one. Anyway, the thought is to head north this
time - Maine, Nova Scotia, potentially
Newfoundland. So here’s the question - how
long is the sailing season in that area. I’m
not talking sailing for Canadians, I’m
talking sailing season for sissy-boy I won’t
wear socks Americans. Joking aside, I would
assume some kind of diesel heat for nights is pretty much prerequisite.

Thanks in advance

Re: Stus-List stuffing box

2016-04-01 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Bev,

Shaft size can be changed over the years, I went from 7/8" to 1"
shaft a while ago.
It is best to measure (if it wasn't noted in the log book the last
time it was done :).

Simply back off the packing nut, measure the inside (thread)
diameter, screw it back on, measure the prop shaft diameter, the
difference divided by half is your packing size.

So, 1 3/4" nut I.D. and a 1" shaft will need 3/8" packing.

If the boat is in the water and you're nervous of the water that can
come in with releasing the packing gland nut then WAG (wild ass
guess) the thread I.D. diameter by measuring the outside thread
diameter of the shaft log and dropping, say, 1/8- 3/16" for thread
depth. That'll get you close enough.

Packing that is slightly too large can be made small enough by gently
flattening with a hammer, so buy what you think you need and then
again one size up.It's cheap enough.

How do I calculate the thickness of the material needed to repack
the stuffing box on a 29-2?

Does anyone have the specs?

Just make sure that you use the green LED bulbs behind the green lens and
the same for the red.

I found out the hard way that using white LED bulbs behind the colored lens
reduced the visibility dramatically and had to purchase the matching LED
bulbs in order for the forward running lights to work properly

Question about LED replacement bulbs for nav lights. Is there a conversion
chart for our Aqua Signal lights. My steaming and anchoring lights are out and
I want to convert if I have to climb the mast. Might as well do the deck
accessible ones at the same time.

Just ordered a Adler Barbour refrigeration system for Corsair. We used the ice
box for storage when we day sailed and have an AC/DC portable that we used for
cold drinks. Now that we are going to be spending weekends (and more) on the
boat we will appreciate the refrigeration.

So far the completion list for this spring is:
1. New fixed ports
2. LED interior lights (dual red and white in main fixtures)
3. Added a second bank of group 27 batteries (and added a fuse to the original
group 24 pair)
4. New cushions ordered and due before launch.

Before launch I still need to replace the fuel filter and water pump impeller.
Still looking at replacing the navigation bulbs with LED.

You mentioned Halifax and your boat is Northern Light. Is this the blue C&C in
Halifax at RNSYS?

It’s great to make contact with people from the same planet.
I am in China, which is the equivalent of Middle Earth…not very good for

However, I’ll meet some of you guys in Halifax soon.

Re: Stus-List A little help from our neighbors up north...

John

I echo Ken’s comments about our Spring in Nova Scotia. This week we had 50+ F
(10, 14, 11, 7 C) temperatures Thursday thru Sunday. Perfect weather for
Spring Commissioning, paint, epoxy tasks. This is to be followed by below
freezing and 15-20 cm (6-8 in) snow Monday and Tuesday and then back up to 50+
again next weekend. Almost depends on which way the wind is blowing

This gives us the question of do we start or do we wait? We can commission the
boat, wait out the snow then launch or just go sit at home in front of the
fireplace and wait til May

Sailing is best 2nd week of June and onward. Even in June it can still be cold
some days

Spring is really unpredictable. This year it looks like spring is going to
come quite early. Many bodies of water that are often frozen in winter did not
freeze at all this year. There was no appreciable pack ice coming down from
the north, not much ice in the gulf so we expect the water to warm up much
sooner than usual this year. I expect many people will have boats in at the
local clubs in before the end of April I think there are boats already sailing
down Halifax way.

area. I’m not talking sailing for Canadians, I’m talking sailing season for

of diesel heat for nights is pretty much prerequisite.

Thanks in advance
