Re: Stus-List DQOTD - What is a Arcotronic 50 uf Capacitor for?

2017-05-05 Thread bwhitmore--- via CnC-List

Ahhh...  Interesting that last Sunday I finally pulled out a 50 amp, old, very
heavy battery charger because it not only took about the same space as a
battery, but hummed constantly.  Turns out it weighed about as much as a
battery too!  A prior owner had put in a ProSport 12, but it was simply
miswired, so I properly connected that to the starter battery and ran a
Proportion 20, run to the house bank.
Thanks!

actually that is way too big for a galvanic isolator.  But it is about the
correct value for a ferro-resonant battery charger; notice the AC rating.  The
charger uses a synchronous loop (L & C, tuned to 60Hz) to keep the supply
voltage fairly constant.  The charger part just uses a diode bridge, no
regulation.

I'm afraid it will not make your boat sail faster, actually those weigh a ton
so probably want to go with the modern semiconductor based version.  ;-)

Leslie.

 Hi All,
 Back
on earth, gear heads who read practical science, could
engineer all kinds of things themselves.  I’m guessing a
galvanic isolator was planned, and like many projects never
quiet finished.  Then the lawyers out numbered the
engineers, lots of paper work ensued, and surveyors wanted
monitors or some kind of fail-safe device to save us all.
Occasionally the surveyors would tell stories of kids and
moms electrocuted just off the boat, usually in fresh water.
So now the boats are too expensive for mortals to work on
the boat, and they sit in harbors while, the owners work to
pay for the marketing. . .
Clearly time for me to get off the
 dock. . .

Step down transformers work with AC, not DC. You need a DC to DC
converter. Google DC to DC converters and you'll find plenty of sources.

The PO of my boat left everything! I tried to sort through it all and
ended up trashing a bunch of stuff. One thing which I fortunately held
onto was a blue plastic thing in the shape of a capital i. It almost
looked like a section from a toy monorail...but it said "harken". So I
kept it. A few years later I finally figured out that it was for reloading
the balls into the traveler car!

Stus-List Battery Charger

2017-05-05 Thread robert via CnC-List
My old Guest Pro Battery Charger Model 2815 seems to have hit the
dustit was working yesterday but today it was notno charge going
to batteries and no lights on on the charger'red' when it is
charging 'green' when in float mode. There is an exterior fuse which I
checked and it looks finemaybe I should replace it just to be sure.
I have no idea how old this device is or how long they are supposed to last.

Is there anything else I could check?

However, if it has simply 'expired', any suggestions on what I might
replace it with?

Re: Stus-List Battery Charger

2017-05-05 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
If I had to guess the fuse is on the output or DC side of the charger. You
might try taking it apart carefully to see if there is a fuse on the
inside. Of course you need to make sure that your power coming in is good
and connections tight. Likewise for the output. Also make sure that the
battery is good. Some chargers detect a bad battery and then turn off.

For new options, I have not been dissatisfied in the slightest with my
ProMariner pronautic 1260. 12v 60Amps.
http://www.promariner.com/en/63160 This is probably more amps than you need
but they make lower power models.
http://www.promariner.com/en/products/dry-mount-chargers
I replaced a 40amp zantrex trucharge with a 60amp and both died nearly
right out of the box. I've since had no trouble with the ProMariner for
over 5 years.

Re: Stus-List Battery Charger

2017-05-05 Thread robert via CnC-List

Josh:

Thanks.I looked up the charger on Google and found a manual, not a
good one, but one that said may be it could be one of two fuses on the
inside of the chargerto take the cover off and check the fuses.
It also said the charger won't work if one or both of the batteries are
badboth batteries are showing 12.5V. It also said to remove the DC
negative on the battery, reapply the AC and see if the green light comes on.

Will try these things tomorrow.if no luck, there will be a new
charger. Will update.

Failing repair, Promariner, Mastervolt and Blue Sea all make good
chargers. Don't mind Guest chargers.

Have not had good luck with Xantrex TrueCharge 2's.

Yup. I got one of those somewhere. I'm going to need it next week to
reload the bearings in the 22mm traveler of the beach cat I'm restoring.
If I can't find it, I'll just use shaving cream.
