Re: Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous

2017-09-13 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I was thinking more along the lines of the Mid-Atlantic states. But you're
absolutely right and if you want to petition for a rendezvous in the middle
of the Atlantic then be my guest. You just have to fill out the survey.
Just be warned you might be meeting up with yourself...

Re: Stus-List Mast Gooseneck Fitting

2017-09-13 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
When the cast aluminum fitting on the gooseneck of my 38 broke during a gybe
(I was letting the inexperienced but eager daughter of a crewmember steer
after an offshore race) I took the old fitting off and had a local machine
shop make a replacement. They bent and welded some stainless plate, using
the old one as a pattern. Cost a couple hundred IIRC.

Can't recall if it was attached with stainless rivets (drill them out) or
machine screws (use an impact driver) but it took longer to detach the boom
from the fitting than to remove the fitting.

You can easily do the work yourself.

The metal gooseneck fitting on the mast of my '34 failed. It attaches to the
mast via 4 screws on each side. One of the two metal loops that accepts the
boom end broke off. I have only gotten one estimate so far based on the
photo I sent to my usual boatyard, of $1100, to remove, fabricate and
replace. I'm waiting to hear back from some rig shops. I haven't tried to
remove the piece myself but am guessing I won't be able to with hand tools,
and I'm worried about stripping the screw heads.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to repair/replace without spending
so much? Is there a market out there for used pieces like this? Any help
would be appreciated.

You should be able to remove it yourself. If it's on with machine screws, try
one of these:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_36882_36882

It's what I use to remove things from masts.

If it's riveted, drill out the rivet head then drive the rest into the mast
with a punch.

Once you've gotten the fitting off, take it to a local machine or welding shop.
They should be able to repair or copy it.

Or, like one lister has already said, call Guido at Garhauer.

Re: Stus-List Mast Gooseneck Fitting

South Shore may actually have one. Several years ago, I broke the
opposite part on the boom. Southshore had a brand new casting out in the
shed. Took him a couple of days before he had a chance to dig it out and
ship it. It had not even had any machining done on it. It still needed
to be cleaned, trimmed, drilled and painted. They sold it to me as it
was for $100 plus shipping. Meanwhile, I took the original to my local
machine shop and the nice owner built up a lump of molten aluminum where
the ear had broken off, and then easily ground it to the same shape as
the original and drilled the proper sized hole in it. He charged me $50
and it was ready in 3 days. I still have the "new" one in my boat parts
in case, still unfinished, if I should ever need it.

Ah bank. My 90amp Balmar alternator could exceed the rate for my smaller bank
so an ACR, Echo-charge, or reducing the alternator output would be prudent.

I'm guessing that with 3 batteries you are probably close to 300Ah and
somewhere around 60 to 75amps is the absolute most you would want coming from
your alternator. Leaving it set to 60% is probably just right.

me through setting the regulator down to only charging at 60% instead of 95%. I
don't know why it started to do it in the first place, but I think that it
might have had something to do with my heart interface 2000 acting up. Anyways,
after the trip, I reset the heart 2000 back to factory defaults, and it started
working properly again. I'm not sure if I should ramp my regulator back up to a
higher charging level or not. One thing I did after that, is I bought a Balmar
regulator temperature sensor. I think it cuts the charging back and the load if
it gets too hot.

I have to push the starter button several times before the starter turns the
engine over. I thought it was the starter button. I'd better check that out
before I get into trouble, and cant start the engine in an emergency.

Speaking of an emergency, after finishing a race, yesterday, we dropped the
chute and started the engine, as we approached a railroad bridge. We suddenly
smelled smoke, and when we opened the cockpit hatch, smoke poured out. After
closer inspection of the engine, we discovered the alternator belt had been
slipping, It got hot, melted and got stuck to the engine pulley. Luckily I
had an extra belt on board, and a half hour later the repair was completed.

I looked into getting a new starter and my parts guy said congratulations you
have the most expensive starter I've seen $1000
I can get a new Kubota starter which would work fine for about 100
Very confusing
I looked it up and there is something about running A stronger wire to the
starter
Maybe that's the problem?
I'd like to know myself

My Perkins is configured this way, as well. The glow plugs are activated by the
ignition key (what would normally be considered “starter” position and the
starter is a separate button. But the starter is interlocked with the glow
plugs.

So it seems that this interlock is common enough.

Agree with Rick. Universal diesel are configured that way today. Press the
pre-heat button activates the glow plugs, silences the oil pressure alarm and
provides power to the starter solenoid.

Yes, there is a voltage drop from B+ to ground when the glow plug button is
pushed. But the current is flowing from B+ to a glow plug relay and then to
ground, and not through the glow plug button. The button passes a current of
only an amp or two to close the relay.

If the voltage drop from the glow plugs causes the starter to not operate, and
if the buttons themselves are not worn (which is highly likely after 20-40
years), then I’d suspect a developing problem in the starter or solenoid, or
corrosion is the wiring of the start circuit.

The idea of having the start button powered from the glow plug button is to
make you use the glow plugs when starting, and thus ensures easier starts. At
one time that was a pretty common configuration on diesels – as a matter of
fact, automotive diesels still do it now, except the activation of the glow
plugs is controlled by the on-board software which delays the activation of the
starter slightly to let the glow plugs take effect. One slight but additional
result of the start button being powered from the glow plug button is to
eliminate the chance of a defective start button causing damage to the starter
and related components, or depleting your battery.

One wonders about the experience level of the mechanic you talked to.

Mechanic didn't think it should ever have been wired so that the glow plug had
to be pushed for the starter button to function.
