Re: Stus-List Foam in mast

2017-10-07 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I wouldn't use any chemical solvents. The risk to the insulation on your
wires and the possibility of a gooey mess are considerations.

You said it was just above halyard exits? If you don't pull the rig, think
about modifying a drain snake. They're fairly cheap. Perhaps take a 1/4
inch snake, cut off a decent section, chuck it up in a drill and insert it
up through the halyard exit. You can tie a messenger to the halyard and
shove the tail into the mast to get it out of the way.

Might be a tedious job and might yield less than 100% results.

If you pull the rig, use a long piece of PVC pipe with the end cut at a
sharp angle. Maybe put some fasteners through the end to make a "reamer".

Re: Stus-List Gotta Love These Hurricanes

2017-10-07 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Bob, was wondering about Beemer. Beemer is probably the most exposed boat
on the list. Hope it weathers the storm OK. Let us know.

As I was driving to Pensacola I saw a couple of shrimpers up the Biloxi
backwaters by one of the I-10 bridges.

Many marinas on the coast boot out their tenants. As I was doing storm
prep on Touche' Friday, a Catalina came into the slip next to me. The
regular tenant was hauled out. The Catalina had just gotten booted from
Palafox Pier, the most expensive, by far, marina in the Pensacola area.
Palafox Pier has floating piers but is directly on Pensacola Bay. The
Catalina owner was not happy.

This is what happened to Palafox Pier after Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

http://www.pnj.com/story/weather/hurricanes/2015/09/15/hurricane-ivan-anniversary/72347546/

Palafox Pier has a LOT of big boats in it. Where does one take a 60+ foot
motoryacht when it's in the only marina with large slips within 20 miles?
Some boatyards offer pre-paid storm haul outs. Or I guess one heads to The
Wharf in Orange Beach. That's a 25 mile run.

Fairly quiet here in Baton Rouge tonight. Nate has made landfall on the
Delta and will shortly make a second landfall on the Mississippi Coast.

Re: Stus-List Spreader boots 1984 C&C 35-3

2017-10-07 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Edson elkhide spreader boots are available at West Marine for about $70 per
pair, which is about twice the price of the Taylor Made nylon boots. The boots
on my lower spreaders (where there is contact with the headsail) are elk hide.
The boots on the uppers (which are above the leach of the 135) are nylon.

The elk hide boots last forever – or so it seems. The Nylon ones are much more
durable than the rubber boots you see most commonly.

Stus-List Gotta Love These Hurricanes

2017-10-07 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
So here's how my last 3 days have gone. On Thursday a fellow sailor from my
marina in Biloxi called to let me know they were considering closing the marina
for Nate. I packed up my car and headed down to Biloxi yesterday morning.
Sunshine, 82 degrees and 12-15 knots from the east. I arrive to find three
sailing buddies prepping their boats and waiting for me to lead them to the
hurricane hole none of us have been to before.
I add five gallons of fuel to Beemer, C&C29mkII, the harbor master helps us get
off the docks and off we go at 1:30PM. It's a six to seven mile trek into
biloxi bay and up the biloxi river.
Two miles into the excursion going under the I110 bridge, I hear a different
sound from the exhaust. I look down behind and see no water coming from the
exhaust. I turn on the autopilot and run down and check the front of the engine
to find the belt and pully laying under the engine. The hub of the pully still
on the water pump.
No overtemp alarm or light. Secondary cooling apparently keeping the temps from
alarming. A mile later, bilge pump starts firing off. Back down to investigate.
Hot water pressure release going off.
Time to power down and toss line to friends boat to continue under toe.
Now as I said earlier, none of us have ever been to these protected waters. We
find one cove and one sailboat attempts to enter. 20' 17' 5' turn around.. As
we approach the I10 bridge (too low for us to go under) we spot a secluded cove
with two sailboats inside. We go inside and 20' depths throughout. Three boats
raft up setting three anchors. Lash to each other and seven lines going to
trees ashore.
Although you never feel you're secure enough to leave her, we jump in the dink
at 12:30AM and motor to the pick up point where one of the wives returns us to
the marina to get our cars. Done and exhausted at 2AM.
This morning, get up, off to the chandlery, no pully. Ok. West marine, no pully
but they suggest Tractor Supply Company. Sure enough they got it. Yeah.
Jump in car and haul butt up to Hattiesburg to hole myself up till Nate passes
thru.
If the marina opens on Monday we will head back get the boats, if they're still
floating, and head back to the marina.
Special note: if the marina call for evacuation and you do not evacuate, they
will sink your boat in the slip.

2017-10-07 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
I just did the rigging on Peregrine. The riggers were able to re-head all but
the V2/D3, which had to be replaced because of aligning the top spreaders with
the bend in the rod. The cost was about $5k for literally the best guys in the
world to do it all.

Stus-List Foam in mast

2017-10-07 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
I hope this is a common issue, and someone has found an answer. Our old
29-2 and our current 35-3 both have some sort of foam in the mast above the
top halyard exit plate. I was really lucky that I pulled a bundle of new
wires through the foam on the 29, it was really touch and go as to whether
my connections were up to the job. I have no idea how you would get a new
halyard down if you lost it completely, there's no way you could get a
bicycle chain through the foam just with gravity.

So, has anyone figured out an answer? One that preferably worked in the
real world...

rigging and mast, it's all original so I'm sure we'll end up with yet

Andrew, you're right, I want to pull the mast so I can take the collar off
the deck, fix some voids, and rebed it, plus change all the fixtures and
the wiring, and add spreader boots. Elkhide sounds good, I'll have to see
if I can find some. I have cowhide and deerhide (I think) in storage
somewhere.

That brings up another thought, I'll start a separate thread for that.

Stus-List C&C 35-3 Rudder Drain Holes

2017-10-07 Thread robert via CnC-List

Neil:

There is probably no one simple answer to your question with water
intrusion in a ruddera hole or two drilled into the bottom of the
rudder is always a good place to start.

In my case, my rudder was rebuilt by the original owner just before I
acquired the boat. Nevertheless, there were several voids in the rudder
that didn't get filled in the rebuild.water intrusion is from the
rudder post as it enters the rudder.so with a moisture meter we
located the voids (there were 3, 2 on the starboard side and 1 on the
port side of the rudder).by taping the side of the rudder with a
small brass hammer, we could fairly accurately figure out the location
of the void inside..I then drilled one hole into the side of the
rudder where I thought the bottom of the void was.if right, water
would appear.it did in all 3 cases.drilled the bottom holes
upwards approx. 40 degrees..then drilled 3 holes to what I thought
was the top of the respective voids.down on 40 degree angle.

Water drained from all 3 bottom holes.let the sun hit the rudder for
a few days to dry everything.no sign of any water weeping from the
bottom holesplugged the bottom holes with thick wax and then poured
or rather injected West System resin down the top holes until the voids
were filled with resin..faired both holes with thickened resin.

Every 3 years I drill a hole in the bottom of the rudder to check for
water..dry after filling the voids and annually prepping the rudder
post to rudder with 4200.

Re: Stus-List C&C 35-3 Rudder Drain Holes

2017-10-07 Thread John Irvin via CnC-List
We drain the rudder on the 27-3 as follows.
Make 3 drain holes, one high up on the trading edge of the rudder, one 3-4
inches from the tip, and one on the bottom of the rudder. We drilled 1/4 in
holes and then tapped them to accept hex-head cap screws.
Water comes out in the fall, cold weather takes care of residual moisture.
Re-insert in spring with a flexible sealant on the screws. Has worked for 20
years.

Curious as to whether anybody has a bimini/dodger on a 30 MK1 and if so, how it
is built. Looking to put one on my boat, but with the low boom and the main
sheet in the middle of the cockpit, not sure how it would be laid out.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Stus-List C&C 30 Shade

2017-10-07 Thread Rick Scott via CnC-List
I have both a dodger and a Bimini on my 30. The Bimini frame is attached to
the rear pulpit. It will provide shade for the helmsman and extends from
the rear of the boom back to the stern.

I’m working at the show in Tent C with my dealer Sail Care through Sunday
afternoon.
Saw Joel yesterday when he stopped by.
