Stus-List Replacing Perkins ignition switch

2017-10-08 Thread Eric Frank via CnC-List
The ignition switch on my Perkins control panel (engine installed in 1980) lost
its hinged rubber cover a couple of years ago, and now no longer springs back
from the glow plugs only position. Can people on this list suggest where to
purchase a replacement switch? It has several positions: off, on, glow plugs
only, start. The switch now doesn’t automatically remove power from the glow
plugs when the key is released. The rest of the panel is still working well
(temperature and RPM gauges) so I would rather replace just the switch. I have
included a picture of the panel here:

I just checked the wind histories from New Orleans Lakefront airport,
Gulfport Airport, Keesler AFB, Pascagoula airport, Mobile and Pensacola
airports. The highest gust reading I saw overnight was 58 at Mobile.
Currently a 3.3 elevation in Lake Pontchartrain over normal tide. Only a
very brief rain shower yesterday afternoon in New Orleans. I am sure our
mayor has stopped sweating over failed drainage pumps.

Rick,

I bought a big hunk of elk hide at the boat show many years ago. I make my own
spreader covers. So far, I’ve only made one set and they have been on the boat
for five years and are looking good still. It doesn’t take a lot of skill,
just a pattern, a pair of scissors, and a leather punch. It was actually a fun
little project.

I put mine on when the mast was down, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be done
with the mast up.

Edson elkhide spreader boots are available at West Marine for about $70 per
pair, which is about twice the price of the Taylor Made nylon boots. The boots
on my lower spreaders (where there is contact with the headsail) are elk hide.
The boots on the uppers (which are above the leach of the 135) are nylon.

The elk hide boots last forever – or so it seems. The Nylon ones are much more
durable than the rubber boots you see most commonly.

I drilled a hole about two inches from the bottom or the rudder in the

each haul out. I seal it with caulk before launching. Works great. I don’t

One of the items in our new C&C 35, Mark III was that there was moisture in the

Re: Stus-List C&C 35-3 Rudder Drain Holes

2017-10-08 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
When we bought ours the surveyor gave cautionary guidance that water in the
rudder was bad since it could cause the metal web inside to rust.
Eventually this could result in the rudder twisting freely on the post or
even falling off. His guidance was that the only good way to fix the
problem was to have the rudder rebuilt. He told stories of some people
drilling drain holes but wasn't convinced that all the water ever made it
out. Imagine trying to dry your laundry by just draining the tank and
opening the lid of the washing machine. We were sufficiently scared by the
possible consequences and had the rudder rebuilt the following winter. In
conclusion the steel web and welds were perfect and draining may have been
sufficient - but for how long is anyone's guess. Some people have a hard
time sleeping on the hook. Instead I have nightmares about killing people
when the rudder, mast, or keel fail.

Here are the pictures that the fiberglass guy took during the rebuild.
They should help you when determining the internal structure of your rudder
and where to drill holes.

2017-10-08 Thread John and Maryann Read via CnC-List
When we rebuilt our 34 rudder, there had been water intrusion and degradation
of the foam but was a relatively easy fix. Of note is the design is solid
glass around the entire perimeter. Careful tapping gave a good guide of where
the interface was. The bottom had a section roughly mid way fore and aft where
the solid glass was considerably less, obviously for the drilling of a drainage
hole. Have had no issue since the rebuild several years ago.

Lay the mast on saw horses and get some plastic pipe long enough to attach a

I hope this is a common issue, and someone has found an answer. Our old 29-2
and our current 35-3 both have some sort of foam in the mast above the top
halyard exit plate. I was really lucky that I pulled a bundle of new wires
through the foam on the 29, it was really touch and go as to whether my
connections were up to the job. I have no idea how you would get a new halyard
down if you lost it completely, there's no way you could get a bicycle chain
through the foam just with gravity.

So, has anyone figured out an answer? One that preferably worked in the real
world...

Re: Stus-List LED Interior Flourescent replacements

2017-10-08 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I haven't replaced mine because I believe the benefit is marginal.
Incandescent to LED is a big power saving. Fluorescent to LED is not. I
also don't use my two fluorescent fixtures that much, dinette and head. If
I decide to replace, I'll buy these:

Stus-List LED Interior Flourescent replacements

2017-10-08 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I didn’t use replacement tube because the old fluorescent fixtures were going
off rather than the bulbs. The fixtures were all behind a translucent panels.
So, I pulled out the old fixtures and hard wired LED strip lights. I used two
in each location, that are chain wired with a jumper. Cleaned the surface and
used double sided tape. Works great.

I also replaced all of the bayonet bulbs with LED replacements.

Stus-List opinions on cabin table

2017-10-08 Thread Lisle Kingery, PhD via CnC-List
Hi all,

I'm interested in opinions about having a fixed table in the middle of the
cabin vs. a table that folds down and out of the way when not in use. As I
obsess over boat features this is emerging as an important consideration.
I'll have 2 kids on board sometimes (ages 6 and 4) and I'm thinking having
the open space might be really nice vs. having the table in the way all the
time. Thanks in advance for any opinions on this issue.

Best regards,

Re: Stus-List C&C 35-3 Rudder Drain Holes

2017-10-08 Thread schiller via CnC-List
Here in the great white north the concern is the water freezing and
splitting the rudder.  The surveyor concurred with that reasoning.  Good
old fresh water has it advantages but cold weather has its own items to
be concerned with.  We haul, winterize and cover but we don't have to
worry about Hurricanes and electrolysis (at least as much as salt
water).  My shaft zincs are pretty much only a shaft stop.

Thanks for all of the input on drain holes.  I think I have my game plan.

to fix the problem was to have the rudder rebuilt.  He told stories of
some people drilling drain holes but wasn't convinced that all the
water ever made it out.  Imagine trying to dry your laundry by just
draining the tank and opening the lid of the washing machine. We were
sufficiently scared by the possible consequences and had the rudder
rebuilt the following winter.  In conclusion the steel web and welds
were perfect and draining may have been sufficient - but for how long
is anyone's guess.  Some people have a hard time sleeping on the

mast, or keel fail.

Here are the pictures that the fiberglass guy took during the

A lot depends on the size of the boat and its configuration besides the table.
Our is fixed midships in the main cabin with folding leaves, storage in the
center section. Serves as a nice place to steady yourself while underway.
With leaves up is a great dining / food prep / card playing surface.
Starboard berth has swing out base so converts to a cozy double bunk. We find
smaller children like the forepeak to play in. We like it

I also have a 30-1 from '73 and would like to see how you mounted the bimini.
My boom was originally a boom that could roll the main around it (the boom has
a fitting near the mast the you attach a handle to and roll up the mast) Of
course, with three reefing points and boom vang, we don;t use it. My boom also
appears VERY long for the main. There is an screw type outhaul at the end with
about 15 inches beyond the clew end of the main. Is this familiar to any other

Beemer survived the hurricane. With no damage other than covered with pine
needles. Five boat were not removed from the marina. Three sailboats and two
sport fishers. Two sailboat broke away from their slips. One ended up sunk
against the sea wall, mast sticking straight up and headsail flailing in the
wind. The other a 43' ketch also broke away from her slip and ended 3/4 miles
away laying on her side on the beach. A 10' gash at the waterline. The
remaining boat appear unaffected. All will receive immediate eviction notices.
The marina is closed. A meeting will be held by the city tomorrow morning to
assess damage and determine when the marina will reopen officially. The
commercial fishing boats were returning this afternoon to the commercial
harbor.. And I was told I could return to the marina tomorrow knowing there's
no power and scattered debris everywhere.

Many marinas on the coast boot out their tenants.  As I was doing storm prep on

Palafox Pier has a LOT of big boats in it.  Where does one take a 60+ foot

Saw 40 mph steady and gusts to 53 mph at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

Re: Stus-List C&C 35-3 Rudder Drain Holes

2017-10-08 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
Neil:

I think I may have commented on this before, but just in case: when I
bought my boat, we noted that the moisture meter readings for the rudder were
elevated (along with much of the core). Rather than do a total re-build, my
repair guy -- who knows as much about West System as the Gougeon brothers and
was a close friend of theirs before they died -- repaired my rudder the same
way he had done with some other C&Cs. First, he draws a grid on one side of
the rudder with parallel lines about one inch apart and intersecting parallel
lines about one inch apart. He then drills holes (about 3/8” or so) on the
intersecting points. Then he places the rudder into a “casket,” which is a
contraption that he made for drying out rudders. It’s basically a plywood box
to which he attaches a heater. He heats the interior space of the box to about
200 degrees F for several weeks, and any water inside the rudder finds it way
out through the holes. After the rudder is sufficiently baked, he then fills
the holes with West System (I’m sure he uses a mixture of some sort, either
colloidal silica or the cotton “wetting” additive). When the holes are filled,
the surface is smoothed out, and several coats of Interprotect are applied on
the entire rudder. He also checks the area where the rudder post enters the
rudder to make sure it’s not easy for water to get in. On my boat, this part
of the rudder is normally out of the water, so this is not a huge issue.

He did this repair five or more years ago, and as far as I know the rudder
is solid and dry.

Here in the great white north the concern is the water freezing and splitting
the rudder. The surveyor concurred with that reasoning. Good old fresh water
has it advantages but cold weather has its own items to be concerned with. We
haul, winterize and cover but we don't have to worry about Hurricanes and
electrolysis (at least as much as salt water). My shaft zincs are pretty much
only a shaft stop.

Thanks for all of the input on drain holes. I think I have my game plan.

the rudder rebuilt. He told stories of some people drilling drain holes but
wasn't convinced that all the water ever made it out. Imagine trying to dry
your laundry by just draining the tank and opening the lid of the washing
machine. We were sufficiently scared by the possible consequences and had the
rudder rebuilt the following winter. In conclusion the steel web and welds
were perfect and draining may have been sufficient - but for how long is
anyone's guess. Some people have a hard time sleeping on the hook. Instead I
have nightmares about killing people when the rudder, mast, or keel fail.

Here are the pictures that the fiberglass guy took during the rebuild. They
should help you when determining the internal structure of your rudder and
where to drill holes.

Re: Stus-List C&C 30 MK1 Shade

2017-10-08 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Yes that is the same configuration Grenadine has. I suspect the long boom was
to accommodate boom-end sheeting. Grenadine’s mainsheet runs from the aft end
of the boom, with the traveler at the aft end of the cockpit. I like that
because, along with tiller steering, it makes for a very roomy cockpit.

The E dimension on a C&C 30 MK I is 11.5 feet. The foot of Grenadine’s current
main falls short of that by maybe six inches, so it looks even worse (a lot of
nekkid boom aft). I think that might be because some previous owner raised the
boom a foot from its original height (which C&C started doing from the factory
after Grenadine was built), and might have just lopped off the bottom foot of
the main to go with the higher boom, thereby shortening the sail’s foot. I’ll
probably get a new main this offseason - Grenadine has already been measured
for it, and for damn sure I’ll get every last millimeter of that class-standard
E dimension.

Cheers,
