Has anyone come up with a good design for a guard to protect your steaming
light from damage caused by flailing halyards and headsails in strong winds. I
know Forespar makes one
https://www.forespar.com/products/sail-light-guard.shtml but I am not sure that
that design will do the job as it does not offer a lot of protection at the top
of the light.

Re: Stus-List Toe Rail Cleat (revisited)

2018-06-28 Thread Rodney Randow via CnC-List
I have used Johnson folder cleats as spring line cleats on my 33-1 for
years. However, I was not being satisfied with the fit without some
modification. To fill in the space under the outward curl of the toe
rail I cut a piece of 1 x 1/8 inch aluminum bar (home depot) with a
notch for the bolt. To keep the cleat from rocking fore and aft, I cut
another piece slightly less than the ID of the clamp that fits on top of
the toe rail between the rubber and the metal top. On a line without an
eye loop I put at least two wraps around the base of the cleat before
tying the cleat hitch.

Re: Stus-List DARK SIDE now PHRF

2018-06-28 Thread Ronald B. Frerker via CnC-List
PHRF is set up as independent stations; US Sailing only reports averages, it
doesn't set them.If you're in a lower wind area, your local station should
adjust accordingly. On Carlyle, we adjust according to the SA/D ratio since our
courses are rather short.  Some legs are only a couple miles long.  A lighter
weight, fast tacking boat like a J22 has advantages over larger heavier boats
like a C&C 35 for e.g..SA/D also addresses the ability to accelerate out of a
tack.  It's not just hull speed, but also how fast one can accelerate to hull
speed.RonWild CheriC&C 30-1STL

 Thoughts on PHRF:
There are a few PHRF rated boats that seem to defy their rating and sail much
faster. My New Jersey fleet had a J28, a cruiser with a rating 171, similar to
a J24, but with longer waterline and bigger sails. Our rating was 99 and we had
better upwind speed, but In many light air races he stayed right with us. We
had to beat him by more than 5 minutes to keep our place. That J28 should have
had a rating adjustment, but never did.

Now I race on Chesapeake Bay and do distance races; we start at one YC and
finish at another. The entire race can be 80 to 100% downwind, so spinnakers
are a must, but I'm racing solo, so I suffer w wing and wing and take pictures.

PHRF can be frustrating. I believe the ratings are fair if the races are
triangular and if they occur in all the different wind speeds. Average a series
of six races in six different wind speeds. In reality, the summer gives you six
races in no wind to 8 knots, so boats rarely ever achieve hullspeed, and
lightweight racers dominate the results. I don't pretend to know any answer to
this rating problem. I'm just sharing that around here, races have too little
wind to race or we are lucky to get under 8 knots, or it's blowing 30 w small
craft warnings, half the entries are DNS and half of the starters are DNF
because of breakage.

I have to share my experience about backstay aduster. Two years ago, after the
unit completely release with no pressure in the middle of the Northumberland
straith, I decided to send my navtec unit to Southshore in Ontario. They are
supposed to be the best around, I did not want to cheap on that and decided to
pay the big money to have it fixed by a pro.

But when I had the unit back, it was already leaking in the box... so I called
them and they told me to send them the unit again.I paid the shipping fees and
returned the unit. After a while it came back, "repaired" with a written note
saying that the rod was scored and that the unit will probably leak again in a
near future. Apparently it was not possible to polish it, but they did not feel
it was a good idea to call me before doing the temporary fix.

Well, thank you very much for informing me after I was something like 600 can $
out. ( repair plus shipping cost) Knowing that first, I would have never paid
to have it repaired, two times!! Was it scratched by them during the repair? I
will never know. But they did send me a "free" seal, you know the one that
everybody say they cost 50 cents. Yes I was and I am still a bit bitter about
it.

It still holds pressure for a while, but I have to pump it back often and fluid
leaks on the transom which is very annoying, and not safe.

I am thinking about replacing the whole thing with a cascading system. I lost
confidence in my navtec cylinder.

Almost everybody on this list seems to have luck with their repair, even when
done by the non navtec certified tech. Good for you, but I wanted to share that
it can be different when you try to repair a 1987 unit.

I wish you all the best with your unit, they are nice when they do work!

Subject: Re: Stus-List Touche' hydraulic backstay adjuster repair

First, thanks to the list for all the helpful advice, on and off list.

OK, decision made. Lots learned. Lots of thought given.

First, a hydraulic backstay adjuster is just a hydraulic ram. Any good
hydraulic shop should be able to fix the leak. I took the adjuster to a local
shop and they said they could "probably" fix the leak. They wanted $125
minimum. I didn't get a warm, fuzzy feeling that "Bubba" understood the
exposure to saltwater, the importance of stainless parts, etc.

So I gave it a bit more thought. My adjuster is 18 years old. It has been
exposed to the elements for those 18 years. My research suggests that the root
cause is probably deterioration of the top seal. It is exposed to UV. Once
the top seal fails, grit may enter the unit and then cause damage to the piston
seals resulting in leakage and failure. Further, if not fixed properly, the
grit may score the cylinder, rendering the unit unfixable. So, we may be
dealing with more than just a "leak".

Given that, I decided to opt for a full rebuild rather than let Bubba fix only
the leak. After talking with Lew Townsend and a few other Navtec agents, the
pricing seems to be in the $350-400 range. The seal kit is about $100 online.

Right now, it's on it's way to Stix-N-Rig'n in Kemah, TX. They have good
online reviews and seemed knowledgeable and competent. Hopefully, I'll get a
good fix and a quick turnaround. I'll let the list know how it goes.

As a final note, I need to figure a way to protect the top seal from UV
exposure. I might find a proper size plastic washer or plastic or PVC cap and
slip it down the rod so it sits on top of the cylinder and shades the seal.

Re: Stus-List oe Rail Cleat (revisited)

2018-06-28 Thread Jack Brennan via CnC-List
Naming a business web site “Exciting Store” certainly is lame, if nothing else.
Sort of like the foreign car company that named one of its models the Mirage a
number of years back.

And Ken is correct that the web site offers no way to contact the company and
uses the .top ending so that it doesn’t have to indicate what country the
business is based in.

So you can take your pick: Clumsy foreigners with good products with don’t
understand English or marketing; An offshore company marketing inferior
products; an outright scam that will swipe your credit card info and sell it to
the highest bidder.

Having had my credit card info swiped after buying products from mysterious web
sites in the past, I wouldn’t chance it

Mike,

The local yard did the work, but, essentially, they bolted through the lead
into the board, then added epoxy and fiberglass to the bottom to fill the slot.

Stus-List 37 Centre board

2018-06-28 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Mike, I had a 1981 36 KCB and in the 10 years I had it, never had an issue with
the board. I would have liked to seal the cast iron board with epoxy or
something else but never got the chance. Fresh water makes a big difference and
I would consider where the boat was going to be sailed before deciding. Having
said that Edd is bang on about the performance. I usually had the board up and
there was no big down side. Let us know what you end up doing!

SCAM ALERT - I saw that listing and website too and spent some time looking
through that site. I think the entire web site is a scam. Try to find a
phone number or even what country it is supposed to be in. And a lot of
items are on sale for the same exact price, $43.99, any items regularly
priced between $100 and $200. at a quick glance.

I probably set my CB down 3 or 4 times a year.  It really helps pointing

when we start to venture further it will see more use.

Re: Stus-List Centre board

2018-06-28 Thread Schillay.com via CnC-List
Mike,

As most everyone on the list knows, I sailed with a centerboard on my 37+ for
almost 15 years before sealing it in the keel. While the 37 has a different,
deeper board, here’s what I discovered when it came to my boat:

In a good breeze, going upwind, it’s certainly an advantage. While we didn’t
necessarily point higher, we did side-slip slightly less. For cruising, it’s
not a big deal, but if you race the boat, you’ll want it down upwind.

In light air, having that much more “boat in the water” when the board was down
was more of a disadvantage. If it’s 5 knots or less, you will sail faster with
the board up on all points of sail. Additionally, the slot itself is a bit of a
drag when it comes to water flow.

Not only did I fix the board in the up position, I sealed the bottom — no slot.
I actually sail faster now off the wind.  I did add a drain plug, but I’ve
found not much water has been collecting inside.

Interestingly enough, I raced the Enterprise for a season and a half with the
board sealed in place. Ultimately I saw no difference — we were as competitive
as we were before and finishing in the same place as before with the same time
differences between the same competition. This was for one-hour or so beer-can
racing, and perhaps things would be different on longer races. Oh — and sealing
it gave me one less whiny crew member in the pit since they no longer had to
winch that thing up after the windward mark rounding.

Maintenance issues is a biggie. If you keep the board, you are looking at
replacing that cable every 5-8 years. For the 37+ design, there’s no way a
diver can do it — it must be a haul and the yard will charge you extra for
staying in their travel lift for the duration of the swap. And if that cable
should happen to break, you could be looking at a world of damage to your keel.

All the best,

Edd

Re: Stus-List Touche' hydraulic backstay adjuster repair

2018-06-28 Thread Bruno Lachance via CnC-List

Re: Stus-List Securing bimini frame with Shock cord 33-2

2018-06-28 Thread dwight veinot via CnC-List
Mike I have a length about 18 inches, of covered wire like lifeline wire
that is attached one end to the boom bail and the other to the moveable
block on the main sheet. That helps to reduce the sheet length required
when sailing off the wind a lot especially on Alianna where the advantage
is 7:1 to the fixed ratchet block and cleat on the traveller. Works great.
Also Alianna’s boom is about a foot shorter than the standard setup so I
have a high aspect ration main. That caused an interesting problem when
Doyle made my new main to standard measure. It was really really loose
footed so they had to make another new sail to fit properly. This old 35
mkii design is really a nice sailing boat. I use my main even when single
handed a little extra work but well worth it.

Re: Stus-List Securing bimini frame with Shock cord 33-2

2018-06-28 Thread Bruno Lachance via CnC-List
On our 33 mkII, the main sheet is attached to a spectra webbing that goes
around the boom, we can move it a bit aft and forward and it clears the dodger.
It is amazing that the strand doesn't slip that much, never had a problem with
this setup.

Re: Stus-List Securing bimini frame with Shock cord 33-2

2018-06-28 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Dwight

In its normal position is a vertical line from traveler to boom bail. With it
aft is angled. Aft requires longer sheet and angles make it slightly less
ideal for trimming.

The other issue is that cockpit is cramped and with the bail aft the sheet
tends to interfere with the main trimmer more than with it forward over the
bridge deck

Torque values are typically based on the size of the threaded portion of the
bolt not the nut size or socket size. It was a little unclear y your
description which you were measuring. Have you seen my video? I provided
extra info in the video description. I'll link it here and copy the
description text too.

https://youtu.be/n6B0IPKQERc

I used the torque values from the link below as a guide. 316 SS lubricated.

Looks to me like from the description your bolt matches my #5 bolt. I got the
sockets on ebay and yes most of them where ~$50. I made sure to get deep 6
point sockets 3/4" drive so that my breaker bar and torque multiplier would fit.

As a final note, I need to figure a way to protect the top seal from UV
exposure. I might find a proper size plastic washer or plastic or PVC cap and
slip it down the rod so it sits on top of the cylinder and shades the seal.

remove it after splash.

I've seen all manner of permanent labels. I thought about drilling and tapping
