The fitting you are referring to is called a retainer. It is required on
many boats with furler, if the halyard exits the mast too high.

Stus-List Re: Old Harken Roller II

2021-07-12 Thread Jeffrey A. Laman via CnC-List
Hi Todd -- I also have a C&C34 and had the same problem with the wire halyard,
but my halyard was new. If your situation is as mine, the luff of your head
sail is too short and the swivel of the furler needs to go higher. I did the
same as you when I kept getting halyard wraps and saw that the halyard was
getting messed up -- I got a double braid halyard on instead and all seemed
fine. Until the end of the season when I lowered the head sail and saw that
the double braided halyard was all chewed up. I made a 6" diameter Dyneema
loop and lifted the head sail that much higher. Bingo -- no more problems, the
wire halyard, since repaired, is good, no more wraps. Moral of the story --
check the double braid halyard to make sure that isn't getting chewed up. You
can certainly install a restrainer to increase the angle at the top sheave, but
a Dyneema loop is a lot easier solution.

fraying wire and twisted coil that this had been a problem. I switched over to

video (pretty old footage) that specified a 7 degree angle between the furling
foil and the halyard up at the masthead and that Harken makes a fitting to
mount on the mast a bit down from the top in order to increase that angle. Now
that it works, I will clean and lubricate it to make it even better!

Harken roller furlers really don't require any additional lubrication, just the
periodic rigorous flushing with water. However, I do spray mine with McLube

Korby;

The question your really need to ask yourself is how you will be using the
radar? Is it for weather spotting when out sailing? Collision avoidance when
offshore and range is most important? Or for entering harbor or negotiating in
a restricted waters?

Radar on the mast puts the antenna up high and gives you maximum range.
Desirable for collision avoidance on the ocean, particularly if you have
something like a 32 mile range radar, and if you use the radar when sailing..
You can also see approaching weather a bit further away, though I suspect that
is a pretty small benefit. The downside of the height is that the beam from the
radar passes over anything relatively close to the boat.

Newer style digital radars are really good at seeing smaller objects, like an
anchored boat at night or channel markers and pilings in restricted waters. I
use my radar mostly for entering harbor and navigating in a channel, so I'm
looking for objects like pilings and ATONs that are 1/4 mile away in the dark
or the fog - rather than trying to see a tanker on the ocean.

That's why I mounted my radar antenna on a pole near the stern, with the
antenna about 14 feet above water level so it shoots out above the dodger,
bimini and boom - and above anyone standing on the deck.

My mounting pole is made from schedule 40 stainless pipe, the alternative was
schedule 80 aluminum. Given the looseness that we had to deal with due to wave
action on the way to Bermuda a couple of years ago, I rally doubt that a mount
could be made from PVC. The mounting base for my pole came from Edson, as did
the top plate the antenna, and the backup VHF antenna, GPS antenna, and a
couple of other things are mounted to.

Garhauer makes a nice looking stern-mount radar mast, it allows you to set the

least four weeks right now, can't get materials.

Hmmm…. I think I used wd40, but I used it really as a flush more than as a
lubricant. I have freed jammed furler (and many other) bearings (bushings,
shafts) this way. Wrap the lower end with rags or paper towel, flush (blast
into the gap with the little red tube) rotate, spin if possible, repeat,
repeat. Repeat, tIll it feels really effortless, the runoff comes out clean,
and the visible bearings balls are similarly clean. Can’t recall if I hosed it
off afterward or just wiped it down well. Freshwater boat, probably just
hadn’t been really cleaned for a long time.

I rigorously flush my Harken furler's drum and swivel assemblies with dock
water every spring and sometimes in the fall. Use a hard jet spray and be
sure to spray each assembly from various angles. Particularly spray the
drum assembly from below and in the drum itself. You'll need to pull all
the furling line out to do that. Tie a knot in the line at the first
stanchion block and make a note of which way it winds.

Harken roller furlers really don't require any additional lubrication, just
the periodic rigorous flushing with water. However, I do spray mine with
McLube for good measure.

Stus-List Re: Radar Mount

2021-07-12 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
I built a radar pole from scratch. 8' of heavy wall stainless tube with a
square of stainless plate welded on top. I made the base from an anchor
chain lock, and the top rail clamp from drilled-out and through-bolted
handrail fittings. The cost was under $400 CAD all in.

Stus-List Re: George Harding Cuthbertson's Binder #5 Slides

2021-07-12 Thread J.P. via CnC-List
Hi

Thanks, Yeah I have this, and a couple passing mentions in what looks to be a
newsletter or newspaper article… “Orange Peel” – ugh.

She is being moved to Puget Sound end of summer… time for a winter refit and
some lovin’. “Orange Peel” (ugh) has been sailed the last two years and when
recently purchased was re-documented with the USCG as her original name –
Alethea… I’m going to refit her as more of a cruiser… but still with an eye to
her racing pedigree…

43' | C&C Custom 43 | 1972

"Orange Peel" has a solid race history and pedigree. The C&C 43's were built by
Bruckmann Yachts in Canada who are known for legendary offshore racers. Fast,
good looking, and incredibly strong these iconic yachts are still winning major
events including the Chicago-Mac in 2011 and best in class SORC. This
particular model not only makes an excellent racer, but could easily be
reconfigured for a solid blue-water cruiser.

The boat has not been sailed in several years but has been mechanically
maintained. The vessel exterior has cosmetic issues, but all the sails and
running rigging are in good condition. In addition to the sails on board
including 2 spinnakers are 13 bags of sails stored away from the boat.

Slip is not transferable in the current location. It is priced to move quickly
. Broker co-operation is invited!!

This particular C&C 43 was donated to the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation a
501c3 Charity. 100% of the proceeds from the sale goes to support youth sailing
programs in the Santa Monica Bay.

or early information on Alethea… she was the SORC champion in the early 70s as
I have been told (rumored anyway)….
