Stus-List Motor Mounts

2023-03-10 Thread Rob Hamlin via CnC-List
Hi
I’m replacing the motor mounts C&C 37+, Yanmar 3HM35F motor.

Removed the two back mounts, looks like they are held in by machine bolts into
bed. The front two bolts holding each mount were stripped.

Question, anyone else came across this? thoughts on solution to re-fasten/bed
the bolts.

Well that's going to be fun.  Have you been able to take the old bolts
out, and is it possible to tap a new thread
next size up?  That would be easiest solution.  Otherwise, Major
re-construction in your future, I see.
Good news, If yours is like my 30, it is a big mass of fiberglass topped
with a steel plate.  Maybe you could wap
it with a new steel plate and through drill it from the sides to secure
it.  Otherwise grinder and lots of new

fiberglass.

Yes I was able to get the bolts out. Good thought on retapping and larger size.

I've not taken one (engine stringer) apart, but in other areas that I
have inspected on mine, there is fiberglass and more fiberglass...
well over an inch thick in some areas.  I guess back then they were not
sure how much was enough...  You may find
some epoxy saturated plywood...but I doubt it.  Which is actually good
news as you can grind it out and glue it back together
just time and really messy effort in a small spaceif you have to.
Try the re-tapping 1st.

Hope it all works out.

Yes! That would be a great option as well, if a larger bolt size isn't
possible for re-tapping, then just drill out

enough for the heli-coil of the right bolt size and good to go.

I am not sure if this helps, but the C&C 35 engine mount is angle-iron that is
bolted horizontally through the stringer and then the engine mount bolts go
into vertical tapped holes.
That could possible be adapted for this case???

Another thought,
Are the *bolts* stripped or the steel plate? Is it as easy as new bolts?
I did an emergency repair on my old Atomic 4 once by just using one tap size up
to re-tap a stripped hole in the block, that may also work if you can get the
engine out of the way and have a straight vertical shot at it.

Like Joe said, angle iron. The diesel in my 35-1 is mounted on angles
bolted through the rails. 1600 hours and no issues. Another option is
have a shop fabricate a channel and install it over the rails through
bolted.

Look at stainless toggle bolts or Twist-Tee anchor bolts. If you drill the
hole large, install one of those, hold it in place and refill the hole
around the anchor bolt. However, that would require lifting the engine
over the protruding bolt. Much easier putting a bolt into a thread hole
than lifting an engine over a bolt.

Not sure I would like a Heli-Coil or E-Z Lok here with the vibration. But
it might work.

The bolts came finally came out with pressure and power impact. It doesn’t
appear to be wood under the fiberglass.

My plan is try to drill out see if I can re-tap or May look to cut out and back

Bill,
Over the past several years I have found that Wholesale Marine is the lowest
price for bottom paint.

https://www.wholesalemarine.com/

They typically have a paint sale or rebate offer right about now. I see that
VC17 is on sale now.

Otherwise, I look around and have used a number of different online retailers.
The retailer depends on what I am looking for.

I haven't purchased anything from Defender in quite a while, but used to.
Didn't know they were acquired -- explains the prices. I purchase from West
only when I need something quick or want to put my hands on it to examine
before purchase. Turned out the new fuel tank I put in last year was offered
lowest price at West. Never know. There is a store near me.

There is still Defender. Though, their website is not as technologically up to
date as Fisheries Supply. But, to be honest, I will always pay more to support
our local joints if they have what I need. Easy for me to say, since we are
fortunate to still have a few to chose from here in NYC.

Bill,
Over the past several years I have found that Wholesale Marine is the lowest

They typically have a paint sale or rebate offer right about now. I see that
VC17 is on sale now.

Otherwise, I look around and have used a number of different online retailers.
The retailer depends on what I am looking for.

I haven't purchased anything from Defender in quite a while, but used to.
Didn't know they were acquired -- explains the prices. I purchase from West
only when I need something quick or want to put my hands on it to examine
before purchase. Turned out the new fuel tank I put in last year was offered
lowest price at West. Never know. There is a store near me.

Our club has a group discount at Fisheries that I am happy to share.
The more it is used the deeper the discounts go.  The actual discount
amount varies from item to item.  But, in some areas it can be
significant.  They also give a 10% discount for the first 90 day you own
your boat.

Call in a mention Quartermaster Yacht Club and have them set up an
account for you that is tied to the club discount.

The only other chandlery I can recommend is Hodges Marine.
https://www.hodgesmarine.com/   They beat Fisheries and pretty much
anywhere else on marine electronics including Raymarine.

The bolts came finally came out with pressure and power impact.  It doesn’t
appear to be wood under the fiberglass.
My plan is try to drill out see if I can re-tap or May look to cut out and back
the stringer and glass afterwards.

*bolts* stripped or the steel plate? Is it as easy as new bolts? I did an
emergency repair on my old Atomic 4 once by just using one tap size up to
re-tap a stripped hole in the block, that may also work if you can get the
engine out of the way and have a straight vertical shot at it.    Joe Please

Stus-List Re: Motor Mounts

2023-03-10 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
When I replaced Calypso's engine mounts I also needed to improve how the bolts
were fastened to the engine beds. Calypso's engine beds are fiberglass over
wood (for height and width) with a steel bar laminated on top of the wood under
approx. 1/2" of fiberglass.

I was able to go up one size of bolt by re-drilling and re-tapping. IIRC I did
use a heli-coil on several bolt locations. I also had four SS "U" brackets
manufactured with the intention to use them to overbuild the engine/boat
connection. What I determined was the extra height would mess up the
engine/prop shaft alignment enough that I would need to slot the engine beds
and inset the "U" brackets. I chose not to do that. I still have the brackets
if any lister's are interested.

Hi
I’m replacing the motor mounts C&C 37+, Yanmar 3HM35F motor.

Removed the two back mounts, looks like they are held in by machine bolts into
bed. The front two bolts holding each mount were stripped.

Question, anyone else came across this? thoughts on solution to re-fasten/bed
the bolts.
