Re: Stus-List Stus list Soft shackle

2016-02-17 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
When I got Mistress 4 years ago it was my first sail boat, and when I stood the
mast and rigged the boat for the first time, it was a lot of firsts all at once
for me.

Having taken lessons before I bought a boat I was expecting 2 separate jib
sheets, to be tied with bowlines, but found only one sheet while rigging up.
Not knowing any better I attached it exactly like this method.

It is a bit tough to get loose at the end of the season, but I have never had
it catch anything and will continue to use it as I don’t race and rarely if
ever change the sail.

This boat has been sold. I inquired on it while still for sale.
It appeared in very good shape and had been on the market 2 years before. I
guess it had delamination and the owner took it off the market, fixed below
waterline, left the above waterline alone and put it back for sale at 79K CDN.
It didnt take long to sell this last time.

When I moved my 26 from Gimili to Edmonton I left the stantions and lifelines.
I was planning to take them off but decided against it due to I thought it too
much work and too risky if something broke. Remember everything is old and may
never have been removed.
I put a bungee over the lines to the toerail to pull the slack out and 1500 km
later nothing moved. I move the boat 100 km each way on launch and crane out. I
have continued the same practice and have no issues.

the old tape. Just make sure to measure and mark when it goes
with a grease pencil before removing the original. I measured
the distance to the underside of the hull/deck joint every
couple of feet.  3M has a special stripe removal wheel for about
$40 that you spin with a drill and it removes the tape and
residue without harming the underlying gelcoat or paint. Ask at

Stus-List GFCI Outlet

2015-09-22 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
So if on a survey it was noted that the 120V receptacle in the head is not a
GFCI (as this was not required during original construction) and the
recommendation is to change it to a GFCI outlet as per ABYC standards. Is it
enough to change just the one receptacle and if so what is the difference
between a hardware store "weather proof" or a marine equivalent. A search of
the web has brought me nothing definitive although it is possible the marine
variety is tinned and able to accommodate stranded wire vs solid wire like
would be used in a home.

Bad thing is we don't even have access to shore power on our lake...but
standards are standards where insurance is concerned.

I have calibrated my knotmeter with my gps on my tablet. They rarely are the

than the gps. My tablet may not be perfect either.
My 26 as I stated does not go as fast as Sam's. Upwind I am 5.0 to 5.5 and
reaching sometimes over 6.0. My personal best is 6.9 reaching, for 4 seconds,
and in flat water and a really nice puff.
I singlehand alot and don't know how to fly the spinnaker yet so I don't know
if that might allow faster speeds.

Agreed, but for our night races there are never more than a few other boats not

beyond red and green anyways. Very little commercial traffic, not like LIS. But
you are correct, it is not kosher. I don’t think anyone would be running around

Anchor light being used to light a windex is confusing and against the regs.
Windex makes a light for that purpose.

A tricolor (with no deck lights) also lights the windex within the lighting
regs.

What about boats not in your fleet?

Lights have meaning.

Forgive my push back on this but I have been part of too many situations where
these seemingly innocent configurations have or could have had consequences.

Exactly right Dennis.

And if motoring, burning three or four lamps is usually not a problem. Hence
the desire to go LED for a masthead tri-light and the practicality of keeping
lower lights as incandescent.

You might be astonished at the number of our American cousins who race around
here at night burning every navigation lamp they can, masthead tri-colour,
forward steaming, red, green and after steaming light. Very common on the
overnight races.

My favorite line of the article, and so true as I do it almost time I leave

Finally, I have to say again that no matter what, no matter how
impractical, my boat has to be beautiful. As my old dad always used to say,

My own take on this theme is that if YOU don't believe you have the

Stus-List Off Topic- Automated Race Signals

2015-08-09 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
I know this is sailing related but it is not CC related. We have a fair
number of avid racers on the list and I was hoping for some useful leads.

A short background.

I started sailing essentially 3 years ago when we bought our CC 26.
Although I have only raced in the fun races I have been volunteering on
the race committee since joining the club. One problem we have always had is
lack of other volunteers to help run good races, often there would be only 2
of us. One person usually ran the start countdowns and recorded times and I
assisted on line calls and did all the mark setting and adjusting for
changes in wind direction. Being on a lake wind shifts are a regular part of
the day and while not an excessive amount there is almost always adjusting
of the marks. 2 people can manage the duties as long as they know what they
are doing, committee boat and mark boat. The other individual is retiring
from the committee boat duties.

I am only talking keelboat PHRF racing, not dingy racing. Series racing we
have 6-8 boats usually and fun races we have 20ish.

I have been asked to be fleet captain next year. Having reservations
regarding the ability to get volunteers as I have 3 seasons of experience in
this regard I am trying to think of ways to automate the start sequence so
that we can assign other club members to committee boat duty throughout the
season. My thought process being if they are intimidated by racing rules,
having a simple system pushing a button and watching the line is easier to
train and get people acclimated. It also provides consistency to the boats
racing that no one forgets the horn because they were talking to someone
else aboard.

I realize this may not be official according to the rules but we are not
running the Americas Cup. Having spent some time researching via google
there are some commercial alternatives available, only a few I found in
North America. I am looking for anyone's experience with these devices and
perhaps problems or ones to avoid. My short list of wants:

1. Ability to do a 5,4,1,0 start.

2. Easy to use / reset. Push button with its own clock

3. Connected to lights instead of using flags so all human intervention
is avoided beyond the line observations and recording of time. I think
racers on our lake would accept this as long as they are visible.

4. Portable, able to be taken ashore and used on different boats.

5. 12V power

6. Reasonable cost

The lights seem to be a non-standard option on what I found, at least on
this continent, or only on homemade systems.

Any leads or links appreciated.

Regards

David Donnelly

Re: Stus-List Marion Bermuda Race

This would be a hard thing for the crew to deal with though and indeed sad news.
I will note also that David had a situation of his own during a prior race
where a crew member became incapicated and the other crew, his son and another
young man, were on constant watch with the striken crew member. He had to
abandon but headed to Bermuda.
I imagine offshore racing to be stressful enough without these unexpected and
rare events.
Here's to David and other boats finishing without further incident. And
hopefully a good result for David too.

Re: Stus-List Baltic 39

2014-11-21 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
So how close is the actual hull shape design of this boat to the 40. At a
glance they appear the same with the obvious deck and interior differences.
I have always loved the look and layout of the 40. If the hull shape is
similar what did Baltic do construction wise to make it more suitable for
extended offshore use.

Rob ball designed a very sweet sailing vessel. My wife and I sail her

It is a pain to go below, 6 steps, but when you take a wave that washes

We are doing a full refit for a North Atlantic crossing when I retire in

She looks and sails like the best of the CC line, just stronger for

extension of that stellar mark. Thank you Rob Ball.

Twice I have seen recently repainted boats (one a Catalina, one a
Hunter) who put CC stars under the toe rail. Then there was a Taiwan
knock-off (I think they bought a boat and made a mold from the hull) and
I was pretty sure it was a CC 40 knock-off but the owner assured me it
was 'just like a Swan only cheaper' and so I left him to his beer.

It's good to see the original stars shine.

It?s actually a Cassian/Cuthbertson design built by Whitby Boatworks in

Like a Swan only cheaper may have been a Baltic 39. The hull was
designed by CC and has the CC cove stripe with the familiar
diamond/star. They were built to a pretty high standard, complete with
 teak decks.

Stus-List Standing rigging replacement

2014-10-23 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
I was thinking of replacing my standing rigging on my 26. I am thinking I can
put it in a box and ship it to wherever so they can duplicate what I have now.
I haven't really noticed anything wrong with it other than the threaded end for
the turnbuckle on one of my lowers is bent slightly. I am sure everything is
original 1977 so it may be a good idea to replace it. I would prefer to not
involve cross border if possible but wouldn't rule it out. Does anyone want to
recommend someone in Canada. Or USA if price is right.

Hi Keith. Where are you purchasing the boat? I got my boat in Manitoba 2 years
ago and had a trailer made there. The company that built it, Saturn Trailer,
sent a guy who took measurements and placed the posts right on the bulkheads
and stiff areas. I was very happy. There were alot of 29's there, they may
already have built a trailer and could build you one easily from existing
plans. Let me know if you want any contact information. I think the example of
their work I saw was a 29 come to think of it.

Stus-List 38MK3 and 40 Thoughts

2014-09-30 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
We are making a trip to Vancouver Island this weekend, mostly just a
romantic weekend away but we are going to have a look at a boat or 2 while
we're there. Just a hands on research exercise, I dont see us being really
serious about commuting to the coast right now but in the next few years it
will happen. More of a pass the eyeball test for me and my wife of course.
I want a boat that can sail and be comfortable, basically what CC was
known for. My wife wants comfort first and sailing ability about last on
the list right now.

One of them is a 1987 38MK3 in Victoria. I have always liked the look of
this model and it seems like the one we are going to see was reasonably
cared for. I know there are several owners of MK2 on here I haven't noticed
a lot of 3's. They have essentially the same layout but I know the hulls
are different. What are some general impressions of this model. Maybe of
this boat we are going to see in particular.

http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?units=Feetid=2529851lang=enslim=brokerhosturl=yachtsaleswestywo=yachtsaleswest;

The other one is a 1980 40 foot. I know from recent list activity this
model is well respected, both for build quality and sailing ability.

http://m.yachtworld.com/mobile/boats/1980/CC-40-2618617/Gabriola-Island/Canada

Both boats has been for sale for a while, the 40 longer. Other than
possibly being wet and of course the age, is there anything else that
stands out to anyone why these boats don't sell. One thing that stands out
to me is engine hours, although I admit I don't really know how long a
diesel should last. The 38 has old and/or no electronics, which isn't the
end of the world, especially if they are old and need to go anyway. Both
models of course have by today's standards antiquated interior layout,
which I think makes them less than desirable to the majority of people.
Tankage or lack thereof also an issue.

I hold the belief everything sells when presented at the right price point,
either dictated by market or condition. My goal here is evaluate the model
in person and try to learn what is causing these to hang around, or any
boat for that matter.

We also like the 37+ but none in the vicinity of this trip.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Stus-List wife dosen't like it when the boat leans

2014-09-20 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
I have been trying to get my wife to take a competent crew course with the
same instructor I had. She is reluctant to take the helm but will handle
sheets. She does help with docking when she is aboard too. A couple of
weeks ago we had a good blow for us with winds steady around 18kts and
gusting to about 23. We had a long beat and were on port tack for awhile.
As she wasn't enjoying the cockpit experience she went below and proceeded
to fall asleep. She is getting better it is only our second year with the
boat, I have to be patient. We really enjoy the time at anchor I try to do
more of that the days she is out with me.

I found my youngest son did better when I forced him to take the helm while
I had my lunch one afternoon. We were sailing up wind and as he had to
steer to the tell tales he was pretty busy and didn't notice we were
heeling. So yes the having something to do is good advice.

I think part of my problem is even though I have the most tender of the CC
family she doesn't have a tendency to round up even when severly pressed. I
am used to it more than the rest of the family I guess and when I know the
boat is in that groove I am reluctant to ease the traveller down or let
main sheet out. Having said that I am often surprised and a little
perplexed when we speed up with what I think is a large bubble in the
mainsail

FWIW, When I taught sailing, I stonrgly recommended that spouses be in
different boats because the wives learned and did more.

Perhaps she would benefit from lessons from a friend or sailing school?

 David,
Well said. I am learning late in life that *many* wives don't appreciate
when a sailboat heels or as mine says, . . . don't like when it leans.
And what I find challenging and fun about sailing like short tacking
through a narrow channel or sailing hard on the wind close hauled, causes
my wife anxiety or grief. Just when the wind starts getting good, she
usually asks to go somewhere for a swim.

I recently went sailing w a friend with the same problem. His wife is
very similar to mine. We've all been friends since before we married over
twenty five years ago. He wanted to show off his new boat and his
wonderful country of Holland. His plan; the guys went sailing for 10 days
in Holland while the wives went touring by car through France. I noticed
most sailboat crews were guys, many skippers were alone, a very few white
haired couples and the same number of twenty-ish couples. My friend and I
had a great time sailing whenever possible and remarked several times when
the boat was making 8 to 9 knots and heeled to 25 degrees, and we were
having fun, The girls would hate this. One leg on the North Sea, we
sailed w just the 110% downwind in 27 knots wind making 9 knots boatspeed.
On the return, we had 18 to 20 knots on the nose. Sailing would have taken
longer, causing us to miss getting a slip, so we motorsailed w a reefed
main making 8.3 knots. The main steadied the boat so she maintained
momentum and sliced better through the waves. I remember playing w the
vang to get a better shape to the top of the sail, because the boat had no
traveller. The girls would have hated it.

So, I'm looking for suggestions to keep both the boat and the wife, happy.

Re: Stus-List sailing under jib alone

2014-09-19 Thread David Donnelly via CnC-List
I often sail with a single sail with my wife on board. She likes everything
about sailing except the sailing (heeling) so I like to keep it relatively
calm if the wind is over 10 kts. If the wind is up and direction favors
reaching most of the day I only use the main, but if the wind is light and
we have to point at all we use the genoa. I also sail on and off my mooring
ball quite a bit and usually do my final approach under main alone. I find
the main to be a fair bit slower but as I am alone most of the time on my
boat it isn't in my way or need furling when I have to walk foward to grab
my mooring lines.

On my 26 the real power comes off the genoa but I suspect most boats are
that way.

I never really gave much thought to stressing the rig and I haven't
observed anything unusual. We sail on a lake and dont have the rough water
that coastal sailors have.
