Re: Stus-List C Interior Wood Veneer - mid 80's

2015-09-10 Thread Tom Anderson via CnC-List
Jon,
The interior teak on my 32 was looking tired, Ok, looking very tired especially
around the galley about five years ago. I have had good luck with Cetol light
on exterior teak. So I lightly sanded the teak in the whole galley area, taped
off and put on two coats of Cetol light, and used the boat for a year to see if
I still liked the looks. It held up well, and then I lightly sanded the rest
of the interior, taped and coated the rest of the interior over the next year.
To today it still looks very good. Please keep in mind that the interior teak
had not been touched at all before.

Stus-List Windows laptop for chartplotter?

Danny,
If you own an iPad with a GPS built in ie a 3G model, all you need to do is buy
a Navionics app or sim ilia and you are all set for your trip and any other
future trips too. I like Navionics enough that I keep a dedicated iPad for the
boat aboard in a Griffinmilitary spec case. Works great!

Stus-List Isotemp hot water heater

2014-02-26 Thread Tom Anderson
Dennis,
THANK YOU for the link to the Isotemp. Upon your reccomondation and a review
in Practical Sailor I plan to but one to replace my Raritan that rusted thru a
couple of years ago. By the way, right now it is cheaper to buy indirect thru
Isotemp than Defender - Go figure! Also, the Isotemp I think will fit more
easily in the sail locker than any other model. Still have to do some
measuring before ordering.

Guess I can't help but notice the incidence of rusted out water heaters
mentioned here. Some brands don't use stainless. Hence the shorter
service lives.

For me, stainless tank. Period. The new Isotemp SPA series water heaters
keep the stainless tank but switch to a polypropelene exterior. $450 for
the 4 gallon model. Well worth the $200 difference over the Kuuma and
better materials than some well known brands in my opinion. Every time I
cheap it, I end up wishing I hadn't. It's a lesson we sailors never seem
to learn.

Stus-List Landfall 38 - cruising showering

2014-02-24 Thread Tom Anderson
Steve,
While cruising, we usually take showers, although quick ones every day. Our 32
came with shower installed with sump pickup under grate. We also carry two
five gallon sun showers while cruising. They work great for ferrying water
back to boat and also when we haven't run the engine for awhile, and hot water
tank is lukewarm, I take the sun shower and hoist it up on pole lift, then run
nozzle into head's hatch. I actually prefer this method for then I don't have
to use one hand to hold shower nozzle in head while trying to soap up at same
time. And I also agree with others that this is a great way to keep the head
clean.

Here's a funny story. My wife and I were out for a ten day cruise, and of
course when we depart, water tank is full, hot water heater carries five
gallons too, and two sun showers. Now when cruising you are always going into
the dock if you are at a certain island or harbor, right? So what I have
learned to do is always keep one sun shower empty in dink ready to fill up when
ashore. So I fill up the sun shower a couple of times over the first couple of
days, then the third or fourth day I fill it up again, and before I put it into
the main tank, I think, wait a minute, what if the main tank is already full ?
If I put it in when full, it just overflows into the bilge. So I check the
main tank (or I should say, only tank), and sure enough, it's topped up. So I
have learned that even while cruising and taking showers every night we aren't
going thru that much water every day.

The problem with an expensive helm mounted chart plotter is that it'll be
old news in a few years. I'm not keen on spending ~$1500 or more on a chart
plotter that will be old tech a few years from now. The iPad does so much
more than navigation and is half the price. Sure, you can't read it easily
in sunlight and it's not waterproof .. I can buy two iPads for the price of
a raymarine plotter though. And I can take the iPad home and do all sorts
of other things with it (primarily reading sailing magazines with Zinio)
 but I digress...

I'de like to have a plotter, or some kind of multi-display unit at the helm
but the prices on them aren't justified in my opinion. I am making the same
thing using OpenCPN, a laptop and likely the Standard Horizon GX2200 for
GPS and AIS info for the laptop. I already have the laptop, OpenCPN is free
(and good!) so I'll only be spending the $350 on the AIS/GPS capable VHF
radio vs $1500 for the same functionality at the helm? I can't justify
 that.

If the technology was more modular, ie; the multidisplay had proper buttons
and was really *JUST* a display and interface I'de be more interested.
$1500 is a lot to spend on what is essentially a touch screen monitor ..
 except it's not is it? It's a raymarine/garmin/sh whizbang that isn't
upgradable and will essentially suck compared to the new stuff in 5 years.
Oh yeah, and charts are really expensive too. I happily paid $50 for
navionics with charts for all of North America!!! Charts that get updated!
Give me a waterproof, sun viewable iPad type device that uses open
protocols that i can mount at the helm and I'de gladly spend $1500 on it.
All I need is a display and an interface (buttons *and* touch, but don't
take my buttons away). A computer is a computer is a computer

There are nice plotters that I would like to have, it's just a question of
value for the money. My boat bucks are needed elsewhere.

Stus-List Navigation Software

2014-02-19 Thread Tom Anderson
Who wants to be staring at a five inch display, when you can be looking at a
iPad screen? Also, don't get me started on plotters mounted at the helm. At
the helm the only person who can I look at it is the driver, and when the shit
hits the fan, the driver should be looking at something other than the five
inch screen. The hot set up on racing boats, and I've also seen it on cruising
boats is to have the display on a swing out arm in the companionway, or even
mounted on the bulkhead left or right of the companionway where the whole crew
can see it. And having that display be a redundant repeater from a display in
the dry nav station down below is even better.

By the way, my waterproof case for the ipad is a military grade Griffin.

I've had 2 Raymarine products. Both were junk. The first product was 4000+
autopilot. On matter they or I did it would not steer a straight course. The
unit was rated for a 16000 lbs boat. It was installed on a Pearson 28, well
below the displacement limit. Product #2 is a st40 wind instrument. It worked
for 1 week after the installation. I sent it back to Raymarine service and they
repaired it. The repaired unit worked for 2 weeks. They currently have the unit
and can not duplicate the problem. The problem is it displays all dashes on the
instrument. I said how about a new one. They said $130. I said free. They said
no.

Stus-List Drill another hole?

2014-02-13 Thread Tom Anderson
Steve et al,

Nonpareil has eight holes thru the hull. The one more that I have than your
boat is the depth sounder. Last year I replaced all my Signet instruments with
Tack Tick instruments. The transducer that came with the new package is
actually a tri-ducer. It measures speed depth and temperature. It was
manufactured by Airmar, who I understand makes the majority of transducers for
different instrument manufacturers. Is there any chance you could get a
combination transducer instead of having to drill another hole?

By the way, this tri-ducer is located under the v berth right next to the head
discharge.

Also on your list of holes in the bottom. Don't you have a head discharge?
When you list a head drain, I think you are talking about the head sink.

Hi All,

I installed depth and speed last season and I re-used the old through-hull
transducer (no hole) and that works fine. However, that transducer is
located under the starboard settee (the one forward of the nav station) and
because it needs to be encased in mineral oil (or whatever it is in there)
it's in a big piece of pipe right in the middle of that storage area.
Needless to say, I don't use that storage area very much and I would like
to.

I've also had some problems with the depth instrument, sometimes it stops
reading and I suspect the old cable or the transducer.

My thinking is to drill a new hole in the hull up forward (currently it's
next to the keel), and install the thru-hull that came with the unit and run
the new wire. I'm hoping that this will achieve two things:

better working depth instrument (with full range)

a usable storage compartment (valuable on my small boat)

Now my question to you all: is it worth the trouble? Drilling a hole in the
boat is typically avoided and I already have the following holes:

Engine raw water intake

Two scuppers

Galley drain

Head drain

Head intake

Speed thru-hull

That would make eight with a new hole. Too many?

I've replaced almost all of the thru-hulls and original gate valves with new
bronze thru-hulls and proper seacocks.

Thanks,

Steve

1) Many boat owners cover the old holes with a piece of teak or a piece of
Starboard and mount the new displays on that.

2) The proper way is to glass the holes closed and cut new holes for the new
displays, but you'll need to paint the area or match the gelcoat color. I did
method 1 and have method 2 on my someday project list. FWIW, I chose TackTick
instruments to replace my Signet SmartPak system, and love the product

Stus-List Hot water heater

2014-02-10 Thread Tom Anderson
Josh,
It totally rusted thru from the inside. It had a life of 30 years. Not too
bad I think.

Tom,

What exactly died? Unless the tank has rusted through, most of the parts
are replaceable. Heating element, thermostat, anode, and TP valve
(pressure relief). I just finished rebuilding mine and feel quite
confident that it will last considerably longer for only about $100 in
repair parts. That's pretty good considering they are upwards of $1200
new. Follow the link for some pictures.___

Stus-List Free used Signet Marine instruments parts

2014-02-09 Thread Tom Anderson
I have the following used Signet Marine instruments parts taken off my boat
last year in working condition at that time. FYI, the speed always read a
little low (by a knot or so, and the wind always read slightly high. I did try
calibrating the instruments a couple of times with marginal success. All these
items are available for free for the price of shipping to destination to the
first person who emails me at t...@nonpareilracing.com, NOT on this list serve.
Also I am not interested in doing multiple shipments, so all parts will go to
first person.

1) Masthead Sensor (anemometer) mounting bracket missing
2) smart pack digital display with thru bulkhead holder
3) smart pack sense pack MK225
4) smart pack sense pack MK175
5) paddle wheel (connector plug is cut off end)
6) plug for paddle wheel
7) Connecting wires for all, except masthead sensor.

Any questions please email me off list.

Stus-List Hot water heater

2014-02-09 Thread Tom Anderson
Hey fellow CC 32 owners,

I am looking to replace my original Raritan hot water heater which died a
couple years ago. Raritan's 1700 Series replacement model is one half inch
bigger than my old one, and I had trouble removing the old one from the locker,
so I think that model is out of the question. So if anyone can please chime in
and let me know what specific model you have installed, it would be most
appreciated!

Stus-List Genoa sock

2014-02-06 Thread Tom Anderson
David,
I have been using one for the last eight years on my racing genoa. With two
people it takes about three to four minutes to put up, much less to take down.
MUCH better than the heavy UV Sunbrella or some other sort of sacrificial
material. Genoa flies much better in lighter air. Any good sailmaker or canvas
person can easily make you one. Probably cheaper than ATN., and you want it
made the exact height of you luff. Too big, and it will flop around in wind.

Has anyone used a product like the ATN genoa sleeve? I am considering if I get
a new genoa, not having a protective leech section put on and instead using a
product like this. Plusses and minuses? I have seen comments that they create
more windage in a storm, but ATN is claiming it would be protective. I have
seen plenty of genoas destroyed at our club by something coming loose while at
the mooring in a blow, and this seems like a way to prevent that. Dave

I have a 32 with a double rail at the stern and am thinking about cutting the
upper and adding a gate. My swim ladder actually comes slightly above the
lower rail when up where it tie it. My concern is that I have a motor mount
and a 65 Lb outboard on the stern rail port side vertical post which I will
have to shift more to port but wondered about the rail strength after
cutting. Any thoughts? I am also looking for a lighter outboard with a
 little less HP.
