Re: Stus-List Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated

I guess they must have updated the application software. I had been covered for
3 years when they realized that Imzadi, my 38, was too big for their
underwriting standards.

I do admit that while I was covered, I was occasionally amused by the
promotional messages that lauded how big a benefit it was that they covered
road service on the trailer for my boat.

After Progressive didn’t renew my policy a local agent placed me with Victoria,
the marine insurance subsidiary of Nationwide. Good experience until they
stopped insuring boats in North Carolina.

I di d get all three of my boats on Progressive for a bit less than BOATUS was
for insuring just one. I have the C&C, an Avon RIB, and a Boston Whaler on for
about $600/yr. BOATUS was high for the Whaler at $170/yr! They did cover the
Avon as a dinghy to the big boat, but I decided I wanted the boat covered
explicitly with Progressive. IIRC the Avon portion of the bill is about $60/yr

had their boat sink and ran off, leaving an uninsured sunk boat for the marina

The only bad thing I have heard about Progressive was from someone hit by a
freighter. The freighter didn’t hang around long, not like it hurt THEM very
much, and Progressive was apparently clueless about tracking down their agent
and getting paid by their insurance. Totally the freighter’s fault too, they
got off course and hit some ANCHORED boats.

Re: Stus-List Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated

2019-11-12 Thread schiller via CnC-List
I can say that we were treated wonderfully by AutoOwners with our
dismasting experience on Corsair (Redwing 35, C&C 35-1).  We originally
went with AutoOwners in 1996 when we purchased Corsair because no other
insurance company wanted to insure a 1970 hull.  AutoOwners responded
quickly, the agent was easy to work with and after the quote for full
repair exceeded the agreed hull value they cut us a check and let us
know the boat was still ours to repair or dispose.  We chose to
dispose.  Our agreed to value payout was basically enough to buy our
newer C&C 35-3.

We insured our C&C 35-3 with Boat US since that was where she was
already insured.  When our Redwing policy was up for renewal, our
insurance company contacted us and I told them I assumed they were done
with us.  They said definitely not and we changed our policy for the C&C
35-3 over to AutoOwners.

There was no discussions with them over depreciation on the dismasting
quote.  The would have covered everything up to the agreed to hull value.

AutoOwners has made me a convert.  I have dealt with them for two house
claims and the dismasting and they have been easy to work with (two
different agents, one was my deceased Mother's house).

I submitted a claim under a BoatUS CNA policy years ago, and it was handled

It was also sad when they (BoatUS) ceded the BoatUS stores to West Marine, they

After the founder of BoatUS passed away a few years ago, ( by all accounts a

My experience with BOATUS was stellar years ago. I hit a log and bent the prop

estimate and they paid it no question. I don’t even think I had a deductible
because I had paid to get hauled anyway for painting. There was no depreciation
at all. How does a prop shaft and prop “depreciate” anyway? They are good for
decades and then you hit something and they are no longer.
It is a real shame BOATUS went down the drain.

Re: Stus-List Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated

Bruce,
Just an FYI, the ISO for watercraft is WT 00 01.  Most companies either follow
the ISO because they have been tested in court for the language used, or
because the ISO has already been approved by the state so they don't have to
get their own policy approved.

There are many companies that do use their own policies as you said, but they
are based on the ISO with some changes to the language as they try to exclude
something that the base policy doesn't.  Typically, that language is tested in
court pretty quickly and if they lose, they tend to revert their language back
to the original base policy.  The mid-west company I worked for for a few years
went that route.  They managed to win a few court cases so some of their
language became standardized among other 'write your own' carriers.
There is one other policy standard that exists that I forgot about until now.
Lloyd's of London.  They write a policy that uses some of the language that I
have seen other's mention in this string that you don't find in ISO forms.
Progressive, Heritage and others resell Lloyd's whenever they get a policy that
doesn't fall into their normal book of business (types of policies they
specialize in).  I've not dealt with a lot of Lloyd's policies, but they are
definitely different.  If anyone on this list has a Lloyd's policy, I highly
recommend the coverage review I mentioned earlier.  Very highly.

I agree with everything James said except for the bit about ISO forms.  Yes,
ISO forms are pretty standard for Homeowners, Renters, and even Commercial
General Liability.  For boats, however, I have not seen the standard ISO forms,
meaning that each carrier's policy may differ, even substantially.  That means
that one should not rely on having standard policy language that is only
altered by endorsements.

Actual Cash Value (ACV) - the amount that a boat or part is worth after
depreciation is applied.
Depreciation - everything has an average expected lifespan. Similar to how cars
lose value (depreciate) the minute you drive off the lot, so do boats.  Boats
depreciate as a whole, similar to the way cars do. But parts, like winches,
also depreciate individually.
Most parts are estimated to last less than 20 years.
For example cushions may have an average life of 5 years. The wood table 15
years, the engine 20 years.  Etc.
The hull, mast and stainless tubing will probably have longer lifespans
estimated.  35-50 years.
Depreciation is calculated by dividing the age of the item by the expected
lifespan.  So 3 year old cushions will be depreciated by 60%.
Recoverable vs. non-recoverable depreciation - your policy may be a RCV policy
or it may be an ACV policy.   If you have an ACV policy,  all you ever get is
the ACV of the part being replaced. So you can not recover the depreciation.
If you have a RCV policy,  they hold the depreciation until you do the repairs
or replace the item meaning you recover (are reimbursed for) the full cost to
repair or replace the items.
Once you do the repairs,  you submit your invoice and they reimburse you.
I have a lot of experience with home owners claims,  and not as much with
automotive or boats,  but from my understanding some policies for boats and
autos always depreciate materials and materials are always ACV and only the
labor is recoverable.
Check with your agent to find out the exact details of your policy.
You can also nearly always add endorsements to your policy to make it pay for
'everything' but that drives up the cost of the policy.
>From what I have seen in my 10+ years in the industry,  most people aren't
>insured the way they think they are which is the reason why some of you left
>your previous providers and went with new providers.
Nearly every policy provided by all carriers is identical,  because they all
pretty much just use a standard ISO form.  But the agent at your new insurance
policy listened to the issues you had and added endorsements to provide
coverage to make sure you spent have the same issue again.
If you get coverage review requests from your agent,  you should probably take
them up on it.  They probably send you a request about once a year.
I know this was long,  but I hope it cleared up some questions about what and
why things happen in a claim.

or it may be an ACV policy.

Re: Stus-List Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated coverage

2019-11-11 Thread Dave. via CnC-List
Be careful to understand your insurance policy. Lots of terms like “replacement
value” or “agreed value” or “new for old” have different definitions. See the
definitions section of your policy. Sometimes the “agreed value” provision
applies only in the case of a total loss while a “depreciated value” provision
is applied in case of a partial loss. If you purchase your insurance from a
“marine” broker or even a “marine” agent you should be able to get straight
answers about how claims will be handled but if you are buying your insurance
from the same person you are buying your home owners or auto coverage you may
find the broker/agent less knowledgeable about your yacht/boat policy because
it’s a very different product. And remember that a “broker” works for you while
an “agent” works for the insurance company. Property/casualty insurances are
regulated by your state’s insurance commissioner while a true “ marine” policy
falls under federal jurisdiction. A lower price often equates to less coverage.
I suggest you be very careful here. Just my opinion.

You'll want to look very closely for issues related to depreciation.  If you
have a policy in PDF format, you can do a search on words like "depreciate"
"depreciation" and 20%" and you should find it.

2019-11-10 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
After this discussion emerged on this list a year or two ago, I contacted GEICO
(which had become the Boat US insurer) and asked whether, if I were dismasted,
the depreciation would apply. They looked into it and replied yes. As I
recall, there was a 20% floor. In other words, if I got dismasted, I would
have to pay 80% of the replacement cost. I have a 42 foot boat with a 60 foot
mast. I was on the phone to Travelers that day.

I have Geico Insurance through BoatUS. Agreed value is agreed value. They only
depreciate items that are depreciable, like sails or the engine. A couple of
years ago, my boom cracked after getting hung up on a crab pot. Geico paid the
full cost of replacing the boom - parts and labor, with no depreciation. I
suspect your new insurance company's policy does the same thing.

Re: Stus-List Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated coverage...

2019-11-10 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
I have Geico Insurance through BoatUS. Agreed value is agreed value. They
only depreciate items that are depreciable, like sails or the engine. A
couple of years ago, my boom cracked after getting hung up on a crab pot.
Geico paid the full cost of replacing the boom - parts and labor, with no
depreciation. I suspect your new insurance company's policy does the same
thing.

It's actually only on parts you can't prove are not over 20 years old.  Then
the parts reimbursement starts dropping off.  Labor is covered 100%Thanks, Danny

Boat insurance...reimbursement vs. depreciated coverage...

I may be repeating myself here, but it bears repeating.  Check your boat
coverage.  BoatIUS had reimbursement coverage before they switched to GEICO as
their carrier last year.  Now it is depreciated value coverage.  Reimbursement
coverage
pays for replacing damages up to the agreed value.  Depreciated coverage drops
to 20% over time to where most of our boats would only receive 20% of fixing
damages!   I switched coverage when I learned of this and I still pay the same
premium.

I bring this up because one of our brethren has been caught by this issue after
a recent incident.  If your broker cannot find a reimbursement carrier, let me
know.  I will provide the contact info of my guy.

Re: Stus-List Boat Insurance

2018-02-05 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
I recently moved from Novamar (brokerage recommended by my broker) to Boat U.S.
I have had excellent experience with Boat U.S. over the last 20 years, and
after Hurricane Irma got us concerned last year, I vowed to re-shop the
insurance this year and go with a more "known" market.  Boat U.S. was
previously covered through CNA, but now is Geico due to the ownership by Warren
Buffett.  However, if my memory serves me correctly, it is Boat U.S. who drives
the policy language and claims settlement procedures.  Not only that, I
consider the A.M. Best rating of the carrier, as I'm in the business.
In the end, Boat U.S. was less expensive than the quote from my expiring
carrier, and given the combination of the Best rating and my experience with
their claims staff, I stopped looking elsewhere.

By the way, I stopped by a couple insurance brokers' booths at the St. Pete
boat show, and gave them opportunities to quote.  They were not competitive.
All this being said, marine insurance, like many other types, is greatly
impacted by location, value of the boat, year of the boat, etc.  I know some
brokers that won't even consider quoting until the boat exceeds $10 Million in
value.  There are also lots of companies that don't want hurricane exposure,
stay away from Florida, etc.
So, no one solution will work for everyone.  Yet, knowing about all the
potential alternatives is a great thing, and kudos go to the list for that!

higher hull value).  All you did was remind me about the call I planned to

Insurance   I’ve been on the phone with Geico Marine this morning, trying to
get a straight answer as to why the premium for my current policy (rolled over
from BoatUS) is nearly 50% higher than a quote I got online over the weekend
with the same deductibles and coverage.    This is on an agreed hull value of
$50,000 (yes, I know that’s really high for my boat, but I haven’t seen any
reason to change it…), with 1% deductible and $500,000 of liability; and covers
sailing on the Great Lakes and tributaries.  My BoatUS premium was a little
under $700.00; when it moved to Geico it went up to $852.00.  The quote I got
online was for $571.00.
In my initial conversation this morning, the agent on the phone said that my
renewal coming in March was going to be less than last year; somewhere in the
$750.00 range.  She said that I could go ahead and get insurance at the online
quoted rate, but I would need to get a survey done before they’d cover me on a
new policy.   After talking at length with an underwriter and reviewing my
policy, the agent just called back: my renewal in March will cost $494.00.   I
guess it pays to be the squeaky wheel sometimes…   — Fred

To say this thread has been enlightening is a bit of an understatement. I just
renewed my ins. 3 months ago so am not in the market until later this year –
seriously doubt would get a return of premium at this point.

When I was originally looking for boat insurance one of the prime
considerations was how the company handled claims; the phrase “you get what you
pay for” was mentioned more than once. Does anyone have actual claim
experience with any of these companies which are quoting substantially lower
premiums than Boat US? That would include a claim with Geico now that they
have taken over the Boat US business? I had a claim 6-7 years ago with the
predecessor to Geico and the process was very smooth and fair.

Yes. 2017 BoatUS premium (now GEICO) for $1040; GEICO online quote for
substantially the same policy $523. I spoke with a GEICO rep about this today,
and she is discussing the matter with her supervisor and an underwriter, and
said she would get back to me today. Also, my years of experience did not
match between my online quote app (which reflected more years) and my policy,
so I wonder if that type of information remains static in their system based on
the original application.

Looks like we must be having a hard winter if we are already into the annual
“Old British Sports Cars” discussion...

A friend and I co-owned a Triumph TR4-IRS when we were juniors in high school
in the mid 60’s. It had webbing straps under the half shafts on the IRS half
axles to keep you from folding them under the chassis in a hard corner. I think
before they redesigned the car and called it a Spitfire they improved the rear
suspension.

Now if they had just been able to do something about the Lucas ignition. If the
neighbor’s dog took a leak in the front yard it was too humid for the Triumph
to start. Every British Leyland or Triumph owner knows why the British drink
warm beer… Lucas Refrigerators!

A Triumph Spitfire. My best buddy in high school had one of those, bright

succeeded.

My C&C 25 was wrecked in a hurricane on Key Biscayne.

Progressive paid up promptly, allowed me to remove anything I wanted from the
boat and salvaged the wreckage, which had angered federal park rangers because
it washed up in a federally protected area for Florida crocodiles.

On the basis of performance, Progressive is great. However, its premiums have
climbed considerably in the last few years.

I’ve been on the phone with Geico Marine this morning, trying to get a
straight answer as to why the premium for my current policy (rolled over from
BoatUS) is nearly 50% higher than a quote I got online over the weekend with
the same deductibles and coverage.

This is on an agreed hull value of $50,000 (yes, I know that’s really high
for my boat, but I haven’t seen any reason to change it…), with 1% deductible
and $500,000 of liability; and covers sailing on the Great Lakes and
tributaries. My BoatUS premium was a little under $700.00; when it moved to
Geico it went up to $852.00. The quote I got online was for $571.00.

In my initial conversation this morning, the agent on the phone said that
my renewal coming in March was going to be less than last year; somewhere in
the $750.00 range. She said that I could go ahead and get insurance at the
online quoted rate, but I would need to get a survey done before they’d cover
me on a new policy.

After talking at length with an underwriter and reviewing my policy, the
agent just called back: my renewal in March will cost $494.00.

I guess it pays to be the squeaky wheel sometimes…

I called back again and they went from 1125$ to 1092$ for 40k still way to
much. I talked to an agent at the providence boat show (maritime insurance
int.) and he agreed that boat US was unusually high. I will talk to him next
week and he will have quotes for me maybe an agent is the way to go. Thanks for
all the responses this is a very good discussion. I'll report as soon as i have
more info to share.

After talking at length with an underwriter and reviewing my policy, the
agent just called back: my renewal in March will cost $494.00.

I guess it pays to be the squeaky wheel sometimes…

I’ve been on the phone with Geico Marine this morning, trying to get a straight
answer as to why the premium for my current policy (rolled over from BoatUS) is
nearly 50% higher than a quote I got online over the weekend with the same
deductibles and coverage.

This is on an agreed hull value of $50,000 (yes, I know that’s really high for
my boat, but I haven’t seen any reason to change it…), with 1% deductible and
$500,000 of liability; and covers sailing on the Great Lakes and tributaries.
My BoatUS premium was a little under $700.00; when it moved to Geico it went up
to $852.00. The quote I got online was for $571.00.

In my initial conversation this morning, the agent on the phone said that my
renewal coming in March was going to be less than last year; somewhere in the
$750.00 range. She said that I could go ahead and get insurance at the online
quoted rate, but I would need to get a survey done before they’d cover me on a

I am super impressed with their rates and service.

My boat was hit at the dock three days after I took delivery, Thank god for
surveys, the owner of the boat attempted to claim they did not do the damage.
The Survey and witness saved the day. I paid to have the boat repaired
immediately (right at the water line) and American Family wrote me a check and
then had the other persons insurance for their cost. Zero effect on my coverage
or rates.

Like I said: just under 500 a year, 500 dollar deductible and one million
coverage in liability damages.

However they did not want to ensure my ZX14R sport bike. But not too many do.

So as some of you may know I live aboard Breakaweigh full time here in Canada.
It's still new to me and I've been working out boat insurance and weighing
options. My current insurance is with Intact insurance and is roughly $600
canadian dollars a year however when the topic of winter liveaboard came up
they decided to not cover me whatsoever and I've had to look elsewhere. My
local broker found me some insurance through "Yachtline Insurance" in the UK
which has amazing coverage for all seasons including named storms, however it
is very pricey at $2200 canadian per year. Does this sound reasonable or should
I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks guys,

I have no clue about liveaboard. I have a very good experience with the
“Skipper Plan” it is underwritten by Aviva. I deal with a broker in the GTA
(even though I am in Ottawa). You can always give them a call e.g. Petra Fisher
at 647-725-9799 or the 1-800-661-7211.

No association other than a client (for almost 15 years).

I am afraid that starting a snowstorm is more difficult. You have to start a
hurricane first (the normal way) and then start a cold front coming from the
arctic to provide the cold air to cool the moisture. It is much more arcane
undertaking.

Re: Stus-List boat insurance

2013-03-14 Thread Colin Kilgour
For basic coastal coverage, BoatUS or any of the others mentioned
will do fine.

For more esoteric coverage (offshore, hurricane season, charter,
funky cruising grounds) you may need more of a specialist. I've
kicked around a few but have landed with IMIS (they advertise in all
the sailing mags). No claims experience yet (touch wood), but they can
get you the cover you need.

Cheers

Call BoatUS. They'll give you a quote, and if it's a good quote, you can become
a member and get their insurance. Personally, I wouldn't get insurance from
anyone who doesn't specialize in boat insurance. You want to make sure you have
adequate coverage: hull, liability, fuel spill, etc. If you shop for the lowest

I have 2 sailboats insured thru State Farm. I lost the mast on Cal 20 and
while I was insured for only $3500 they paid $3200 less $250 deductible. My
agent then suggested that maybe I'd like to raise my coverage.

Speaking of insurance, State Farm will not insure my boat in Mexico. I am
planning to sail to the Sea of Cortez next winter and would like any advise
you may have about getting good insurance coverage.

I agree with David -- it's definitely worth the couple of hundred $$$ a year to
go with BoatUS. I've had a few claims for various reasons over fifteen years
(most charter-related) that they covered quickly and fully, without complaint
and with no increase in premium. My 1979 Landfall 38 has an agreed-value
policy that would more than cover loss of the boat (especially in the current
market), and is reasonable in cost. The extras they include, like towing, oil
spill coverage, wreck removal and such are things most homeowner insurer-type
policies will NOT cover. Read your ploicy closely.
BoatUS just does boats -- and they do them well.

total loss. At the time, I was insured by State Farm. Under the policy, their
obligation to remove the wreck was dollar limited and would not have been
sufficient to pay for the wreck removal had the State of Louisiana not removed
her almost 1 year later. On the other hand, 3 weeks after the storm, Boat US
had a contractor with a crane barge in the harbor identifying and removing the
wrecks of the boats they insured. I am now insured by Boat US as the New
Orleans owned harbor required that the harbor and city be named as additional
insureds under the policy for purposes of liability coverage. State Farm flatly
would not name the harbor on the policy. Progressive's coverage of an
additional insured did not, in my opinion, fulfill the harbor's requirements.

Moral - Read the policies and know what your are getting for your premium. As

My C&C 25 was wrecked in Hurricane Wilma and beached in a sensitive Florida
crocodile protection area on Key Biscayne. The rangers were hot on my trail,
needless to say. Progressive removed the wreck quickly, even though hundreds of
boats were wrecked all over South Florida, and had an $8K check (full amount
of coverage) in my hand a few weeks later.

They couldn’t have been more helpful, a sharp contrast to how I was treated by
my homeowners insurance company. Progressive won my boat business forever after
that.

Progressive is about half the price of BoatUS and does not require a survey.
There is an upper limit to what they insure – maybe 20K – and they have a large
deductible for named storms, however.

in value and at a rate nearly twice what they had been charging the PO.
Nothing had changed the re boat. Still moored at the same location and stored
at the same location, sailed in same fashion in the same waters. Since I had
the purchase survey already in hand, I went to State Farm, who insure my car
and condo, and got coverage for $2K over the survey estimate and at a very
reasonable annual rate when compared to what others in my club are paying for
their boats. All State Farm asked was some minor corrections in safety areas -
that I would have done anyway - that were mentioned in the survey.

Danny,

I found Boat US prices to be way high too. At a boat show years ago, I spoke
with Tom Carroll at Total Dollar Insurance (based out of Port Washington, NY
‹ where I grew up, assuming that I ever really grew up.) They got me a great
policy through Travelers and the claims process was amazingly simple and
easy after some incidents where the boat broke loose in a storm.

Total can be reached at 516.833.1555. Ask for Tom Carroll or Peggy Haze and
please tell him I sent you. I can't imagine a better outfit or a batter
rate.

Never hurts to get a good survey and Boat US may demand one after your
policy is written.

All the best,

Edd
