You don’t say what brand you have but does the paddlewheel have straight or 
curved paddles on it?

If they are curved you may have put the paddlewheel back on the transducer 
backwards.

I have also been having issues with my speed transducer. I pulled the pin, 
cleaned the wheel, made sure the pin was straight, and I could flick it by hand 
and it would measure OK. Put it in the water, no good. Bought a new wheel, went 
through the same deal, got the same result. I cannot figure out why it will 
rotate freely in air, measuring accurately, and then won’t work at all when 
installed. New wheel, old wheel, new shaft, old shaft, no change.

 

Any ideas?

I have a ST 60 knot meter. The unit started reading intermittently and then not 
at all even though the wheel spun freely and had no marine growth. I replaced 
the paddle wheel and the speed registered. The old paddle wheel had 5-6 years 
of annual bottom paint application. I have not gone back to the old paddle 
wheel but I suspect that the paint build up on the wheel and the surface of the 
transducer just above the wheel was of sufficient thickness to block the 
impulse. Scrape any paint from the paddle wheel and transducer surface and try 
it out.

I've always suspected what Gary is saying.  Look at this site:

If you look close and use your imagination, you can see what Gary is
talking about.  There is no extra border around the transducer.  The paddle
wheel goes right to the edge of the transducer.  So, if there is any growth
on the thruhull, it may interfere with the wheel's spinning.

Would have been nice if the wheel had a 1/4 inch or so of space all around
it that you could clean when you pull it.

Nope, our transponder housings are just plastic tubes – the transponder itself 
has a couple of “O” rings to seal it. My instruments came with a plug which 
looks just like the transponder without wires and paddlewheel, which goes in 
when the transponder is out (lately, that is all the time because the unit does 
not work). I have removed the wheel and cleaned the inside of the housing, I 
may try my handy Dremel with a wire wheel). 

 

Now that something just clobbered the masthead unit, I may just leave the depth 
working and scrap the rest. Buy something else.

shutter which is supposed to slow water entering the boat when i remove the 
paddle wheel. Just a little adjustment up or down and it can go from showing 
zeros to speed i expect. I calibrated the I50 display against gps speed on the 
chart plotter.  Might help in your case

Hodges Marine has the Garmin GST 43 mm transducer for $122. The number on my 
spare is 010-04283-00. 

 

If you replace it, be sure and add stress relief to the cable where it exits 
the transducer. Slide a couple 2” pieces of heat shrink down the cable, shrink 
them then pour epoxy in the top of the transducer around the cable.

Wish I could get mine out ! Really don’t want to force it and have an issue 
should I break something while in the water so it will have to wait to I haul 
out. So I don’t have to sail around with a plug in my boat  :( I know (saw) the 
yard painted right over it when they did the bottom paint  so  I have no 
reading and no true boat or TWS. Is there a way to test the transducer to see 
if the unit is working or even has a signal going to the instrument
Newer  I 70?
May go to no wheel style next haul out

Thanks Dennis.  That certainly looks like it would work in the “Classic” thru 
hull.  Did not think Garmin was “supporting” any of the Nexus equipment via 
replacement parts any more.  Seem to recall Nexus stopped using the 43 mm (?) 
and started using a larger size (78 mm??) a decade or so ago.  

 

I replaced this current transducer ~ 15 years ago and did put some heat shrink 
on the cable per your recommendation back then.  That end has held up well – 
it’s just the paddlewheel that is giving me issues…

I apply a bit of Vaseline to the speed wheel to discourage growth when/if I 
forget to pull it.

As said, pulling is the best solution.

First, replacements are readily available. Look for the 43 mm transducer. If 
you can’t find one, contact me and I’ll find you one.

Second, I leave mine out unless I’m sailing.

Third, I spray mine with Corrosion Block. Probably doesn’t stay on long but it 
makes me feel like I did something. Any lightweight oil should work.
