Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-28 Thread Joel Aronson
Just to follow up - I brought home one of the old panels. I was able to
peel off the vinyl with some plywood attached. I tried using acetone to
remove the remaining wood with some success. I then soaked the vinyl in
hot water in the kitchen sink (don't try this if your spouse/SO is home).
That loosened the glue enough that I was able to scrape off the rest of
the wood with a putty knife. I then used Goo Gone to remove the excess
glue. I have 1/8 inch luan plywood on order. I bought 3M 90 spray
adhesive for vinyl. With any luck I'll have the first panel done and ready
for install this weekend.

My boat now has its own Facebook page. www.facebook/Theoffice35. I'll
post pictures when I get it back together.

I think the 35/2 designs used Plexiglass, but I have seen one done with teak
veneer.I did not like that.the 35MKII already has enough teak in the
cabin.Your 35/3 as I am sure you already know has many significant
differences from the 35/2, and the 35MKII has a lot of significant
differences from the MKI. I think the 35/3 is a Rob Ball design and I am
reasonably certain that the 35/2 and 35/1 were Cuthbertson designs, just
based on when the various designs were built. Yet they are all called C&C
35's but in my mind the different C&C 35 designs are actually more like
different boats altogether. One can only hope that things got improved with
time, but the company tried to stay profitable in a market that got more
competitive with time so some changes were probably adopted to reduce cost
of production yet they wanted to keep the C&C 35 name because it had made
such a good impact for the company. I believe all 3 designs perform very
well and their handicap ratings supports that.I chose a 35MKII for many
reasons but the MKIII was high on my list as was the 33 MKII. I like C&C
boats and I have owned 4 of them during my life. I used the sailing
calculator on the C&C site to help in my decision and I feel the results it
predicted were quite accurate. MKI's and II's usually list for slightly
less than the MKIII's, but that was not a determinant for me.simply put I
preferred the outward appearance and sheer lines of the MKII, classic
Cuthbertson, and the fact that it had an attached bustle which gave it over
30 feet water line length.bustle was a bit of a rage in some AC boats just a
few years before I got Alianna and I liked the way the interior was
finished, lots of real teak that must have taken the marine carpenter an
incredible long time to built. The MKII also has greater displacement.I
figured those extra pounds must have increased production costs so I felt I
was getting "more boat" for my money. I found one in Maine that had been
repowered with a 4 cylinder diesel, came with lots of sails and had a white
Awlgripped hull.it was very dirty but we got a good deal, cleaned her up,
new upholstery and more sails (main and 135 furler), new Raymarine ST60
instrument pack, chart plotter (she came with radar), new Dodger and other
canvas, new upper shrouds and a lot of new lines.she's a beauty now and a
beauty so sail

Alex,

Go sailing already! :). The access panels are vinyl over plywood (matches
the rest of the headliner) and the long ones are screwed, the smaller ones
use velcro.

I'm going to try removing the vinyl and reusing it over either plastic or
new wood to maintain the original look. When that fails, I'll go to Plan B.
3M makes a spray, Super 77, that works great! I used it for a cockpit
cushion and pedestal cover.

Much more civilized on the western side, but great sailing over to the east.

sheeting. I stripped of the peeling vinyl a long time ago and just painted the
wood. It is only 1/8” thick. ¼” plywood would be hard to keep up there using

seem to work well, especially in rough conditions.

Several of the panels have delaminated. 1/4 inch plywood would be too
thick. Is there a better replacement? Has anyone either re-used the vinyl or
found a replacement? What glue would you use?

Thanks!

Velcro might not be the answer, but I'm almost positive this will:

It's like super industrial strength velcro.

It's not cheap but it is reusable. I've not used it for headliners but it
secures my "Velocitek Speed Puck" to the mast (about 1 lb) with a small piece
about 1 1/2" x 4". This stuff bites! We take it all over the world when we
sail and it's conquered big winds and big seas.

Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-14 Thread Joel Aronson
Richard,

In the case of my boat, it is not the headliner, but the access panels that
are the problem. They are vinyl over plywood. The long ones are screwed
in, the more rectangular ones under the winches have velcro. Over the
years there have been leaks that have caused the plywood to fail in the
panels over the quarter-berth and nav station. Also, the vinyl is becoming
unglued in places. Its not terribly noticeable until you remove a panel
and have pieces of plywood falling out. If your boat is watertight, you
probably don't have this issue. The PO of my boat was too tolerant of
leaks, and I am cleaning up his mess.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

Velcro might not be the answer, but I'm almost positive this will:

It's like super industrial strength velcro.

It's not cheap but it is reusable. I've not used it for headliners
but it secures my "Velocitek Speed Puck" to the mast (about 1 lb)
with a small piece about 1 1/2" x 4". This stuff bites! We take
it all over the world when we sail and it's conquered big winds

Mine have vinyl that matches the headliner over plywood. The side
panels have screws with covers. Center ones are Velcro. I'll check

Joel,

Not sure what your access panels look like. I replaced the headliner access
panels on my 35-1 with some white plastic sheets from mcmaster.com. The sheets
were smooth on one side, textured on the other. I think I used 1/8 inch thick.

Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-13 Thread Ron Casciato
I'd be careful of Starboard...it's heavy for that application even
in 1/8" thickness and I don't actually know if it's available thin or in the
length dimensions you'd need.

The original wood panels used to be called "door skins" and are likely the
cover panels of hollow core doorsoften in luan mahogany plywood.
Those are still available. The vinyl covering can be purchased from
Sailrite??? The sewing machine and sail repair materials company.

I recommend using the small screw cap setsavailable at Home
Desperate or Lowe's. The cap snaps on over the screw head and snaps to the
washer..easy to install and remove. I used about 3 per panel down
the middle and they become invisible in a very short time.
