Out here on the East Coast (South Coast MA) very different experience with “The

go to a real hydraulic shop and get what I needed for a fraction (10%) of the
price.

There are lots of discussions on the web about repairing hydraulic backstays.
The one overwhelming constant in most of them is the high regard folks have for
Lew Townsend's work.

I wanted to use him to repair mine a couple years ago. Contacted him but he
was just about to start a 3 week vacation. Being impatient, I chose another
repair shop. They did a complete and expensive rebuild on my Navtec. After
re-install, it lost tension ever so slightly over time. I'd put some tension
on it, leave the boat for a week and return to a loose back stay. Not a big
deal while sailing or racing given the short time frame of those activities but
irritating nonetheless. After a couple years, it now seems to hold tension
over time.

Wish I'd waited and sent it to Lew. After he returned from his vacation, he
contacted me to see if I still needed his help. I can say without reservation
that if I need my adjuster worked on again, it will go to Lew.

 Dan,

That sounds pretty normal for a leaky seal to not hold pressure. It’s
odd that you leaked so much fluid though. The backstay is the highest part
of the system. I would think that the pressure would eventually leak down
to zero and then stop leaking altogether.

I’ve had my seals replaced before. Cheap and easy fix. I’ve also
noticed that if you keep the top seal covered, it lasts longer. Some folks
use a foam can holder for this, although it doesn’t look that great.
Keeping the seal out of the sun will keep it lasting longer.

 Hey everyone,

I noticed that my hydraulic backstay was leaking a little hydraulic
fluid around the piston point - an indication that a seal inside probably
needs replacing... I noticed that over the winter most of the fluid has
leaked out and the backstay will no longer hold pressure. We've had
temperatures as low as -19 deg. Celcius here in Canada, just wondering if
this leaking is normal with a bad seal or is there more at play here with
leaving my hydraulics exposed to the harsh cold environment?

 Thanks,

While replacing the seals is cheap and simple, I would encourage you to
consider having Lew give you a quote a d explanation of services. He found
a number of different deficiencies with my back stay hydraulics beyond just
seals.

TO ADD OIL TO AN INTEGRAL ADJUSTER

 Sailtec recommends using a premium hydraulic oil, ISO 32 or lighter.

 Oil, fittings & tube must be clean.

 Fully extend piston rod.

 Disconnect outside oil line from the upper fitting/elbow.

 Fill a 3/8” piece of flexible hose (CLEAR is best) with ISO Grade 32 premium
oil. Attach the clear

flexible hose to upper elbow (the 3/8” hose should push on to the 7/16” elbow
threads).

Place the other end of hose in a reservoir of hydraulic oil. This line will act
as a siphon so it needs to

be primed and free of most air.

 Connect a section of hose to the other (pump) elbow or stainless line and run
it to a pan or bottle to

collect the overflow oil.

 Slowly retract/push the piston rod into cylinder. [Hint: This works best with
the integral upside down.]

 When oil stops being drawn from reservoir, the cylinder is filled, if the
siphon line is free of most air

bubbles. Reconnect the stainless line and pump system.

 If air bubbles are in the system it won’t hold pressure. If that happens,
pull piston rod in and out a

few times. You may have to allow gravity to work air out.

CARTRIDGE VALVE ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

 Line up hex nuts (one under knob, one on stem).

 Install knob on stem.

 Lubricate ‘O’ ring on tip.

 Turn the valve into the valve port: turn in very slowly, wiggle the body a
little so ‘O’ rings find port,

slide into place.

 Tighten down securely with wrench.

Listers,

What is the best fluid to use in my Navtec Hydraulic Backstay?

I see lots of chatter about viscosity and moisture inhibitors, but no real
definitive answer.

Anyone have a recommendation?

2020-03-02 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
This is from the Navtec/Lewmar website:

What kind of oil do I need for my Integral backstay adjuster, hydraulic
panel, or hydraulic cylinder?

Hydraulic oils used with Navtec equipment should be premium petroleum
based, antiwear oils that have anti-foam and anticorrosion additives. They
should have the following minimum properties: Viscosity grade of ISO 32,
viscosity index of 95, and a pour point of -10 degrees F (-20 degrees C).
Navtec recommends the following oils: Shell Tellus T15, Mobil DTE 11M,
Texaco Rando HD215 and Royal Purple Syndraulic 15.

I'm an Amsoil fan so I called the tech support guy and gave them the
specs. IIRC, They found that their synthetic power steering fluid was the
one that matched. Right, wrong, or otherwise, I've had no problem since.

Mine had transmission fluid originally, but the hydraulic ram service company
advised me to switch it out and use a non-detergent 10 weight oil. Works
great, thirteen years now. Bought it at NAPA. I would use that again.

Re: Stus-List Hydraulic backstay adjuster rebuild?

2019-05-15 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
If a local hydraulic shop can't fix it, I second the recommendation for Lew
Townsend in Seattle.

When you get it back, get a rubber washer for $1 or so at a big box or
hardware store and slide it down the shaft to rest on top of the cylinder.
It will protect the upper seal from UV, a cmmon failure mode.

Re: Stus-List Hydraulic backstay adjuster rebuild?

2019-05-15 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Thanks, Charles. I will call a local hydraulic shop and see what they say.
It looks like the design is fail safe, and it maintains reasonable tension
even with the gauge at 0, if the adjusting threads are tightened all the
way. A long turnbuckle or a pulley system will probably cost me more than a
cheap rebuild, so I'll give it a try.

Mine has the ram at the top and pump with gauge at the bottom, so an
integral design I believe. I assume this is original, but I'm not sure.
Anyone else have a HydraTech unit like this?

Hello all,

It appears that the backstay adjuster is in need of a rebuild. Although the
gauge reads to 2500psi, it struggles to reach 500, and slowly bleeds down. It
is marked Hydra Tech Marine, Vancouver, BC. (which appears to be out of
business), and looks like this:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/DmEJJG4KKXt66bxr5<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fphotos.app.goo.gl%2FDmEJJG4KKXt66bxr5&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cbc45427edf244c977fe808d6d8f00835%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C636934922767839007&sdata=v9lD4r8a7jeVH2MLZxXqj4tzKXOd6CMBLQhAPCK1%2FFU%3D&reserved=0>

Is this something I can rebuild myself by obtaining seals and o-rings, or
should take it to a hydraulic shop?

Also, what range should it be set to on a '74 35, with twin forestays/furlers?

Thanks.

Lew Townsend in Seattle might be able to repair that for you. He did a great

Subject: Stus-List Hydraulic backstay adjuster rebuild?

Hello all,

It appears that the backstay adjuster is in need of a rebuild. Although the
gauge reads to 2500psi, it struggles to reach 500, and slowly bleeds down. It
is marked Hydra Tech Marine, Vancouver, BC. (which appears to be out of
business), and looks like this:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/DmEJJG4KKXt66bxr5

Is this something I can rebuild myself by obtaining seals and o-rings, or
should take it to a hydraulic shop?

Also, what range should it be set to on a '74 35, with twin forestays/furlers?

Thanks.

They did it twice - first time was good for a year, started to leak at the end

You could source new seals on McMaster-Carr which will probably be the
cheapest route.

A hydraulic shop will probably have the seals on hand and be able to
install at their hourly rate - second cheapest.

When I sent my Navtec cylinders (2) to Lew Townsend (+1 206-498-7282) at
Sound Rigging in Seattle WA, I didn't exactly expect much more than a
typical hydraulic shop with the exception that it would be done with
authentic Navtec parts. When he called to tell me that one of my pistons
was bent (out of true) and that he had straightened it, I was surprised.
When he further relayed that he was in the process of polishing the
pistons, I was more shocked. And then he described having performed a 24
hour pressure drop test. These interactions reassured me that while he may
not have been the cheapest he was certainly very high quality and high
value.

As a comparison, when I bought the boat, back in May of 2012, the PO was
dismayed by the small ring of oil accumulating around the pistons. In
frustration he stated that he had just had the cylinders rebuilt at a local
hydraulic shop.

Dan- I have Sailtec backstay that is completely self contained.
The factory told me to bring it inside in the winter and store it vertically.
Something to consider once yours is repaired.

Re: Stus-List hydraulic backstay

2018-03-22 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Dan,

That sounds pretty normal for a leaky seal to not hold pressure. It’s odd that
you leaked so much fluid though. The backstay is the highest part of the
system. I would think that the pressure would eventually leak down to zero and
then stop leaking altogether.

I’ve had my seals replaced before. Cheap and easy fix. I’ve also noticed that
if you keep the top seal covered, it lasts longer. Some folks use a foam can
holder for this, although it doesn’t look that great. Keeping the seal out of
the sun will keep it lasting longer.
