Paul,
Greg Swetka and I each had a replacement bow roller made by White Water
Marine in Michigan. We both have CC 35 MkII’s. Greg sent them his original
aluminum casting (without the bow roller) and they made one of stainless steel
with a single bow roller for each of us for about $1200. For $200 more, they
added stanchion sockets and new stanchions to the bow casting as it extended
further aft than the old one (without the roller). It fit beautifully and I
have had no trouble with it. White Water people were very pleasant to deal with
- I talked mostly with Mike.

Sorry for the late reply I have been away from my laptop and hate writing
emails via my phone.

I am amazed that you have a spare sitting around. I have started looking into
different fabricators and have received a quote back from Stainless Outfitters.
It looks like they do great work, but they are pricey. The estimated price
was $1,500 with one bow roller and $2,220 for two bow rollers. They did say
that they would need the original so that they could match the mounting holes
and rigging attachment.

Have a look at their website on stemheads:
https://stainlessoutfitters.com/products/marine/stainless-stemheads/
<https://stainlessoutfitters.com/products/marine/stainless-stemheads/>.

Also, I have started looking into designing and having one fabricating locally.
Material costs for 316 stainless and hardware will likely range $500 - $800.

Paul,

Did you ask for 1.5 ounce? In light to moderate air .75 is plenty. If it
is blowing you will probably use your jib. 24 feet is plenty of chute! I
have a dacron jib from National Sails/Rolly Tasker. Very happy after 3
seasons. No experience with their chutes or socks.

 Couple thoughts:

National Sail is Rolly Tasker's agent. FWIW I think they are a great value.

I'm surprised they all went with 1.5 ounce fabric. .75 ounce is enough for
 most cruisers.

Even the smaller chute is probably way bigger than any jib you use. I
would not worry about it. You will be able to see under it.

You will need sheets that are about 80 feet each!

I ordered my Rolly Tasker genny direct from the factory and got a great
deal and a great sail. The local reseller got wind of it and made a fuss
and delayed my order. I can't remember the details but I don't see why
going through a middle man gets you any value add if you're doing all the
measuring yourself anyway.

 Joel,

Thanks for your input. I have heard from another that National (Rolly

 Couple thoughts:

National Sail is Rolly Tasker's agent. FWIW I think they are a great
 value.

I'm surprised they all went with 1.5 ounce fabric. .75 ounce is enough for
 most cruisers.

Even the smaller chute is probably way bigger than any jib you use. I
would not worry about it. You will be able to see under it.

You will need sheets that are about 80 feet each!

Re: Stus-List 38 Landfall asymmetrical spinnaker

2014-04-11 Thread Frank
Paul,

I have one symmetrical and two asymmetrical sails for Cool Change.
The symmetrical is 3/4 oz, North Sails S2.
The Asymmetrical sails: one is 3/4 oz Hood and the other is a 1-1/2 oz narrow
cut sail, probably 20 years old.
Of the three, I like the 1-1/2 oz narrow cut sail the best. It may not be the
fastest but it is the most durable.
I use it with the race crew when we practice down wind sailing. I’ve had to
perform several repairs on the other two sails but not one repair on this old
A-sail. Believe it or not, this old sail has done quite well occasionally on
Beer Can races.

However, 95% of the time when we are racing, we set the NS/A2. The other 5% of
the time we set the Hood A-sail. (wind has to be just right) From what you
have said, it looks like the sail maker is designing a sail for cruising. If I
were cruising, especially alone, I would opt for the 1-1/2 oz narrow cut
A-sail. Easy to set, easy to trim, works from 60 degrees to DDW, but not
necessarily the fastest sail available. We use a spinnaker pole on the tack or
a whisker pole on the clue when the boat is close to DDW. Works for us.

By the way, we set the Hood with a sock and the other two out of the forward
hatch.

Re: Stus-List 38 Landfall asymmetrical spinnaker

2014-04-11 Thread Tom Lochhaas
Curiously, this discussion of an asymmetrical spinnaker for a Landfall 38
has come up just when I am trying to decide what to do with one that I
don't use and won't - just as we are downsizing to a smaller house and it's
seriously time to clean out the attic. When we bought our Landfall 38 ten
years ago, we got with it a sailbag marked Ulmer Sails 3/4 Flasher
Landfall 38 1980 - the previous owner had received it when he bought the
boat from someone else, and he never used it, and neither have we. I think
(but it could be a false memory!) that about 9 years ago I opened it up and
spread it out and it looked good to my untrained eye - but I didn't measure
it. (The boat's sails were all the original 1980 sails, in surprisingly
good shape for their years of apparent low use, so I'm guessing the flasher
is likely in good shape too for its age.) But I don't really have time to
mess with it now (in the middle of packing to move into one house while
repairing the other for the market...) or feel like paying a sailmaker to
check it out - unless it has enough value to make it worthwhile trying to
sell. So I seek advice here. Is anyone interested in making an offer on an
as-is basis? (no rigging or sock etc. - just the sail.) I'm a trusting soul
- I'd even to ship it to someone who made an offer and if it's holey or has
other problems you wouldn't have to pay me beyond the cost of shipping.
Anyone interested or have another idea of what I might do with it?
Thanks!

2014-04-10 Thread RAYMOND SHIBE

Paul,
Before you go any further in your quest, I have a brand new in the
sleeve North A symmetrical for a 38 Landfall. My boat was a 1982 #125.
Give me a few days to provide measurements although all 38 Landfalls may
be the same. I'm sure there are listers who might provide information to
the contrary. I am not qualified to argue otherwise.

If you like contact me off list and we can discuss it at length.
