During my search for bottom paint last summer. I found that west marine was the
cheapest. Sometimes by more than $100/gal. They offer free shipping to a local
store, where you go pick it up. I use their price matching to save money on
other items that are way over priced. Doug Mountjoy sv Rebecca Leah C & C

Chuck, I have found Hamilton's prices for bottom paint are quite

Chuck, I wanted to thank you for the insight on the chandleries...it is so
helpful to have the "inside" view of these places; due to my location I rely on
internet for almost all purchases and I have no way to compare one from
another, except for my own purchases.  I would love to be able to go to one of

For some rigging and other stuff, I use a local shop in New Orleans, Sea

Yes, and I think this was probably the big advantage that the old Defender
had over West Marine. With the exception of some of the main yachting
centers, if you would go into any West Marine store, which for me would be
either Cleveland or Buffalo, You could spray a paintball machine gun around
the store and not hit a soul. It's always nice to be able to go through
these stores and browse, but I'm sure that West Marine lost a shitload of
money on them. Probably still is. Sad to say, that online is probably the
only viable approach anymore. I think another problem with the marine
industry is the layers of distribution that add percentages on percentages
to the cost. Some of these layers have been removed in the last 40 years,
but it is still a burden.

Dennis, you noted that the diesel lubricity additive you use is from Tractor
Supply; what brand and any particulars?  Would you recommend that additive for
any diesel (or at least any Yanmar...)?

 Thanks!

Our club has a group discount at Fisheries that I am happy to share.
The more it is used the deeper the discounts go.  The actual discount
amount varies from item to item.  But, in some areas it can be
significant.  They also give a 10% discount for the first 90 day you own
your boat.

Call in a mention Quartermaster Yacht Club and have them set up an
account for you that is tied to the club discount.

The only other chandlery I can recommend is Hodges Marine.
https://www.hodgesmarine.com/   They beat Fisheries and pretty much
anywhere else on marine electronics including Raymarine.

There is still Defender. Though, their website is not as technologically up to
date as Fisheries Supply. But, to be honest, I will always pay more to support
our local joints if they have what I need. Easy for me to say, since we are
fortunate to still have a few to chose from here in NYC.

They typically have a paint sale or rebate offer right about now. I see that
VC17 is on sale now.

Otherwise, I look around and have used a number of different online retailers.
The retailer depends on what I am looking for.

I haven't purchased anything from Defender in quite a while, but used to.
Didn't know they were acquired -- explains the prices. I purchase from West
only when I need something quick or want to put my hands on it to examine
