You shouldn't have to reimburse them for shipping the wrong item.

Well, I did refuse delivery on the black Triton, good suggestion - I hope
it all washes out. I would expect I would have to reimburse Defender for
the free shipping, which is ok.
However, in the interim, I get this Sale email from Hamilton Marine today,
(Thanks Don Kern) they blew Defender and everyone else's price for the

Wisht I had had the same good luck.
I ordered two gallons, took about 45 minutes to get through the re-applying
to the new website, some ridiculous requirements for the password, (it's a
store, not a bank!) and after jumping back and forth through a couple tabs
and hitting send, saw the color had gone back to the default of black
instead of the blue I had selected. I called them the next morning when
they opened, and the *nice* lady told me it was too late - it didn't even
have a label on it yet.
I just sawr it has been shipped as black. So now I am going to have to pay
around $150 to send it back, and have it resent. Not a happy camper. I
think the once loyal employees are quiet-quitting from the new hedge fund

I second the Fisheries Supply recommendation. I like their customer service and
as a long term customer get a good discount. Years ago I become acquainted with
the owners, the Sutter family as Fisheries and my manufacturing company shared
a CPA. Carl Sutter is an accomplished sailor and a supporter of sailing
programs.

Back in the early 90’s I was doing foredeck duties on a Santa Cruz 50. One of
the crew worked at Fisheries. On the first race of a 3 day regatta one of the
primary winches failed. (It’s an exciting moment to see the winch handle
rotating backwards under load.)

The Fisheries guy called the store and arranged for a new winch to be run over
to Shilshole Bay Marina. We got it installed fast enough to only miss 1 of 3
buoy races that day.

Hey Don,

Thanks for the reminder. I have a few hundred dollars of stuff in my Defender
cart and I'll complete the purchase soon. I agree, the discount doesn't seem
to be as deep. I had SS fittings selected that I can find cheaper on the
interweb, so I will buy them that way. I think the discount average is 5% to
10% but the savings on big items was worth it.

West Marine: I only buy there as a last resort. They don't stock as well as
in the past. And the local store doesn't answer the phone. I once was doing a
project and needed a certain color paint, and the Glenn Burnie store had a
recording answer the phone. I drove the ten miles and found they were out what
I needed. There were two cashiers doing nothing but cleaning the counter and
joking with each other, no customers in sight, so I called the store phone
number and sure enough I got the same message, "Due to an unexpected high
volume of customers, our assosiates are too busy to answer the phone. Please
try again later." I put it on speaker for the cashiers to hear and told them
they could have saved me a trip but their service stunk and walked out. I've
also found them closing and locking the store before their posted hours. Very
poor customer service this winter.

Danny and listers,
This year’s Defender Spring sale is dramatically different than the pre
pandemic in person sales. The retail store is limited to 40 customers at a time
and the only manufacturer reps on hand are from the paint companies. I’ve been
a vendor to Defender for over 20 years and worked their sale every year. But
we were not asked to participate. The good deals are still there, but no
different from what you will pay online. Where once you had a close out room
for heavily discounted clothing and shoes, you may find special deals now
online. New owners at Defender plus the uncertainty of holding a large in
person event when planning for all circumstances forced them to prioritize the
online aspect of their spring sale, which saw substantial growth even before
the Covid shutdown.

I went there a few years ago. I was looking to replace my 6 Hatches. I was
able to get a bigger discount directly from Lewmar because of the large order.
So, going there could be beneficial from a negotiation standpoint. It is
always mobbed though. I'm not sure if current events will have any impact on
how they handle consumer traffic within the building. I did enjoy myself
whenever I've gone there. It's kind of like a boat show without the boats
(well, there is always the inflatables!)

Thanks John. Any sense on the level of discount, or is it by item?

In past events it seemed a 10% off most everything, in store and online, other
than the special sale items they had in different areas. Bottom paint is the
biggest ticket item on my list.

Thanks,

All,

For the local sale they do seem to have some decent discounts that should carry
over the online sale next week.

My suggestion is, if you have an online account, put things in your basket now
or at least know what the $$ is for your items before the sale and then see how
much the pricing changes when the sale starts on the 27th. Good luck!

Hey Don,
Not sure about the usual discounts, but I think they just changed the name of
the sale to "Defender Spring Launch Sale". John McCrea offered to report on
the sale and whether the discounts are as good as before. Might be worth
waiting for his report. I put a bunch of stuff in a wishlist just in case.
