Steve,

I know. That's why I am doing a stop-gap. Its a long run from the tank
under the vee berth through the hanging locker to the deck. I am bidding
on the new fitting on EBay so I have it in the fall.

Sounds like replacing the fitting will mean replacing the hose too, a
bigger job.
When I removed the hose off of my fitting I had to destroy it to get it
off. Even if I didn't destroy it in the removal it would not have been
reusable. If yours is like mine it will be hardened by age and aside from
being nearly impossible to remove will likely be impossible to get back
onto a new fitting.

Joel;

By the time you make a deck key and get the old cap out, you will probably have
the same expense and even more labor invested than if you replaced the deck
fitting completely.

A new stainless steel deck fitting complete with a new deck key is $9.99 on

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Deck-fill-Fitting-Waste-/300944956668?pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item4611b79cfc&vxp=mtr

So for $16 and the trouble of replacing 3 screws and a band clamp, plus a
little 4200, you can be done with the whole thing on Saturday morning and go
sailing.

I'm probably the most frugal person there is when it comes to boat projects,

The cap and fitting are both aluminum, which doesn't seem to like sewer
gasses all that much.
Since I was tossing the fitting, I think I just unscrewed it from the
deck and slipped/pryed the hose off and removed it.
Stuff a rag in the open end of the hose so you don't pass out.
Then you get to fill the mounting holes with epoxy and do that deck

The aluminum waste deck fitting is stuck. Even with a good spanner
wrench I could not budge it. I sprayed PB Blaster on it. If the O ring
is good, the Blaster may not penetrate. I thought of drilling holes,
inserting bolts and using a breaker bar and buying a new cap.

The cap and fitting are both aluminum, which doesn't seem to like sewer

Since I was tossing the fitting, I think I just unscrewed it from the
deck and slipped/pryed the hose off and removed it.
Stuff a rag in the open end of the hose so you don't pass out.
Then you get to fill the mounting holes with epoxy and do that deck

The aluminum waste deck fitting is stuck. Even with a good spanner
wrench I could not budge it. I sprayed PB Blaster on it. If the O ring
is good, the Blaster may not penetrate. I thought of drilling holes,
inserting bolts and using a breaker bar and buying a new cap.

Other less drastic ideas?

Re: Stus-List Waste fitting stuck

2013-08-06 Thread Rick Brass
Joel;

By the time you make a deck key and get the old cap out, you will probably
have the same expense and even more labor invested than if you replaced the
deck fitting completely.

A new stainless steel deck fitting complete with a new deck key is $9.99 on
E-Bay (plus shipping from New Jersey).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Deck-fill-Fitting-Waste-/300944956668?pt=B
oat_Parts_Accessories_Gear
<http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Deck-fill-Fitting-Waste-/300944956668?pt=
Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item4611b79cfc&vxp=mtr>
&hash=item4611b79cfc&vxp=mtr

So for $16 and the trouble of replacing 3 screws and a band clamp, plus a
little 4200, you can be done with the whole thing on Saturday morning and go
sailing.

I'm probably the most frugal person there is when it comes to boat projects,
but somehow the time and effort you are looking at to get the old cap out,
plus the $8.99 cost of a new plastic cap, just doesn't seem like it has much
value compared to jut replacing the fitting.

Ya'Know, you get a big enough lever and you are going to shear off those
3/16" fasteners - if they are like mine, anyway. By now you have probably
already broken the seal to the deck, so just take the screws out and take
the hose off and work on it in the shop, or better yet replace it. Sounds a
little beat up now anyway.

2013-08-06 Thread Dennis C.
Maybe 1/4 inch aluminum?  The machine screws will have to be really short so
they don't bend.

For a quick and dirty strong deck key, try a pair of needle nose pliers.with a
big screwdriver between the jaws.

Just a thought but could your vent be blocked causing pressure that would
hinder opening of the cap? Taking off the inspection cover might help.

Re: Stus-List Waste fitting stuck

2013-08-06 Thread Joel Aronson
Keith,

The hose is probably original (its red), so the stuck cap becomes a much
larger project. When I used the hammer, the metal looked like bronze. Its
still stuck. The O ring should be preventing the Blaster from getting
where it needs to be. I ordered a replacement cap (appears to be nylon or
plastic) as a temporary fix. Adding a new hose and fitting to the
off-season list.

Had the same issue on my Pearson, but that tank was overflowing. At least
I'm not there!

I had an identical thing happen to me. A new cap was not the answer. A
new fitting was the answer.
Then you get to fill the mounting holes with epoxy and do that deck
penetration correctly.

Bent one side of the spanner. It slips out unless there is a lot of
pressure (a foot) on it. There was nothing unusual looking, so I did not
take a photo.

After you get done flogging on the fitting it will probably be a chunk
of junk metal. You might save yourself aggravation by R/R the fitting.
If its corroded now it isn't going to get better. Might be time to
replace the hose since your are in the area. It's probably that ribbed
hose that saves some of the crap during pump out anyway. Good luck.

2013-08-05 Thread Josh Muckley
I have found two of the same sized allen wrenches to be a really effective
alternative to a spanner. Choose the size of allen wrench that fits the
holes tightly. Short legs in the holes, long legs together and resting on
the opposite short leg. Wire tire together for added stability. Add a
long screwdriver or other pry instrument and you are set.

Joel - Bigger hammer? I don't mean to be flippant, but sometimes just
banging the living heck out of something with a hammer really works. I
keep a huge (like the biggest I have ever seen) flat blade screwdriver
on board. I've had deck fittings stick, and the spanner wrench just
jumps out of the holes. I've stuck that big screwdriver in the slot,
and clamped a crescent wrench down as tight as I can, and start tapping
on the end of the wrench with a hammer. Start with light taps, and then
when you get really frustrated just whale away.
