Re: Stus-List sailing this weekend

2014-10-20 Thread Ron Ricci via CnC-List
Chuck,

I rebuilt the steering on my 1991 37+ this summer. The whole plate was so
badly rusted that the idler pulleys moved enough to allow the steering cable to
drop off the radial wheel. Edson had a replacement which comes with idler
pulleys but unfortunately is made of mild steel. My pulleys were OK and I
considered having a stainless steel plate made up. The Edson plate is a little
more complicated than just a flat piece of S/S.

Given the effort to replace my plate, I also replaced the cables, rebuilt the
brake and replace the bearings on the steering wheel shaft. The whole thing
took several hours plus about one BOAT (Bring Over Another Thousand) unit in $.

Edson is convenient for me to buy direct. They were very helpful and had all
the documentation for my boat. I think I even met the guy who designed my
steering.

If you have an Edson steering system, I’d contact them.

Ron

Found a lot of play in my steering last time out, so I tightened the cable and

a new idler sheave mounting plate? That's probably why the cable got loose?
I could only find complete assemblies for $450 online. All I need is the

I'd like to get a bronze one.

No blooper this time round - the wind was a bit far forward. Great day out on
the water though; 9.8 knots downwind (until I chickened out as the wind went
forward and broaches started to get more frequent and more violent), 6.3 up in
28-35 apparent (one major round up on a big shift we didn't spot coming). We
had relatively flat water, sunshine and lots of wind - great end to the season!

Stus-List sailing this weekend

2014-10-20 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

We had a nothing short of spectacular day on Saturday with winds in the
18-25 range and 75 degrees sunny / dry weather. The wind was coming from
the NW at an angle good to go the length of the lake on a beat in 2 tacks
and cruise back home 7-8 knots all the way down.

We went to a really good airshow on Sunday: In short, a phenomenal weekend.

This time along with spring are the best sailing seasons here, the fall
racing season is in full swing and the weather is great. Fairly strong
winds and temps in the mid - 60's - mid 70's during the day and 40's at
night are fairly common from now through late November / early December.
Las year, December was great too, we had an exciting sail on Christmas
Eve..

The little Caframo Heater keeps the cabin cozy for overnights and is the
only required 'Winterizing" step: I just need to make sure we leave it
on duty when we close-up the boat for the work week and freezing starts to
happen at night.

Well done! Following seas are tough especially in the chessie chop.
Raced on s 40.7 shoal draft in West river. Boat rounds up like crazy in a
gust. More tender than my 35/3. Guessing the rudder is shorter to match
the keel.

I finally did it – downhill both ways ☺
We had strong SW winds on Friday and I was going NW and we had strong NW winds
on Sunday and I was going SW. Usually I get the reverse. I also had the unique
issue of overtaking a car carrier. He was doing 13 knots coming up the channel,
slowed down to about 8 passing me, and then hit reverse and stopped right in
front of me. I had to call him to see which side was best to pass him on. This
was also my longest time hand steering all year. Otto is very old and not so
good at following seas.

Fall series racing out of Schooner Cove this Sunday.

I hope the gale warning forecast will ease up a bit for Sunday morning. The
little boats don't like to go out if it's blowing over 20 knots at the start.
It will be a bit damp so I better dig out the woolies.

Stus-List Stus list sailing this weekend

2014-10-16 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Thanks for all the advice on the sock and Tacker. For us in Ga it's sunny and mid -high 60's all weekend. We have regattas both in Saturday and Sunday (It's just getting good here) the fall season racing series are revving-upWe're planning on going to an Airshow on Saturday and racing Sunday. The late fall is excellent with typically mild temps and better winds than summer. "Winterizing" here is making sure my little Caframo cabin heater is on duty as we close-up the boat for the week when frost is expected.. While not quite as warm as Wal and the guys down in Lousianna, we keep-on sailing all year long.-Francois1990 34+ "Take Five"Lake Lanier, GaSent from IBM Notes Traveler

Hi Joe,
I hope to sail this weekend. Not sure yet if I can get two days, but I'd like
to make that trip? Should know tomorrow.

Anyone headed out? It looks like we’ll have frontal passage here Saturday
night, so the plan is to go to Baltimore and then sail home with 15 knots on
the stern Sunday. We were going to go to Saint Michaels, but the forecast is
uphill both ways and I don’t trust Kent Narrows with a strong northerly.

All this talk of Frostbiting makes me glad I live in North Carolina. Mid 80s
and mostly sunny this afternoon, with winds 6 to 9 from the southwest. Pretty
much sunny mid to high 70s and 7 or 8 knots for the weekend. Heck, we have a
Sunfish series in January down here.

We will be racing on Sunday in Branford, CT. The "Around the Bouys" Wednesday
night series transitions to Sundays between Labor Day and end of October . The
course is normally set around a few nearby government marks, but this week is
slightly different with a course out around Faulkner's Island (about 10nm) away
and back. The forecast is for ~50 degrees, no rain, 20kn - downwind on the way
out. I'm planning to break the blooper out for the first time since I've owned
Mojito as we have a few experienced people on board and a long leg to play with
it. It's a very casual race so any other C&C's around Branford would be very
welcome if they just turn up and announce themselves on Ch 68. Warning signal
is 11:00am at Cow & Calf just outside the harbor.

Anyone headed out? It looks like we’ll have frontal passage here Saturday

the stern Sunday. We were going to go to Saint Michaels, but the forecast is
uphill both ways and I don’t trust Kent Narrows with a strong northerly.

Rain rain rain rain rain rain rain.

That's our forecast for the next 7 days. We might get a bit of a break
today so this may be the day I go out and take all the summer cruising gear
off.
While a little depressing, the good side of this is that the boat sails
much better without all that crap on it.

Stus-List sailing this weekend
