[cobirds] Lesser Prairie-Chicken review in Kansas
The links in the copied message below are of some relevance to Colorado and Oklahoma so I am forwarding this message. The review was triggered by the Kansas Ornithological Society petitioning to list the Lesser Prairie-Chicken as a Threatened/Endangered Species in Kansas. Bottom line...save that CRP habitat, limit wind farms, work with ranchers, no listing in Kansas recommended. best regards Pete Janzen Wichita, KS _ KDWP Threatened and Endangered Program coordinator Ed Miller gave a very good presentation on Lesser Prairie-Chickens as well as input from the nine member ad-hoc expert committee. It has been graciously placed on the KDWP website. Since the KDWP web uses extremely long and cumbersome URLs I have made use of the free service at tinyurl (http://tinyurl.com/) to make some of these addresses easier to negotiate. [cobirds] Migrant Report Report for 11 May, Twin Lakes Gunbarrel
Dear Cobirders, This looks like the slowest day both for number of individual migrants and for total species. Highlights were three Empidonax sp. one of which strongly suggested Willow Flycatcher and one which suggested Dusky Flycatcher; both of these individuals were calling but not singing. I never saw, but I did hear at least two Gray Catbirds, and, on the trail segment east of Twin Lakes Rd., I found a silent female Hummingbird that was very likely a Black-chinned Hummingbird (it was certainly an Archilochus Hummingbird). Although the total number of individual Dendroica was low, each day there are more Yellow Warblers! The miserable weather coming in should be good for birding, it was the period 10-11 May last year that Twin Lakes had a great fallout day during a similar storm, with a Black-throated Green, Blackpoll, Black-throated Gray, Northern Waterthrush, Hooded Warbler c. Not technically at Twin Lakes, but farther west of the lakes along the Twin Lakes Trail, I heard and saw a White-winged Dove yesterday evening (10 May). This individual has been in the area for over a year, but is often difficult to track down, i.e. I've been going for evening walks in the neighborhood for 2 years and have only seen/heard it twice although Nathan Pieplow has had far greater success in running into it. [cobirds] Sondermann Park, El Paso County, 5/11/10
Early this morning Bill Evans and I birded Sondermann. Highlights included a Northern Parula and a Tennessee Warbler in the densely thicketed area along the Westfork Trail. We got some good quick looks at the parula but were unable to relocate it later. We also had a Broad-winged Hawk flying north. Over the past few days at Sondermann I've made a number of visits and had a decent number of migrants, including Black-chinned Hummingbird, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, some empids, Swainson's Thrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, Virginia's Warbler, Yellow Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Western Tanager, Vesper Sparrow, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Bullock's Oriole. [cobirds] Northern Waterthrush also at Twin Lakes
In addition to Walter's excellent reports, there was also a northern Waterthrush by the bridge just south of the lakes where the trails ocnverge. [cobirds] lazuli bunting Prowers 5/11
Hello all, Ok, so I may not get to go birding but the birds are coming to me! This morning I had 5 sparrow species including chipping, clay colored, house, lark and white crowned. I had a lazuli bunting, a female bullock's oriole, a common yellowthroat, a yellow warbler, yellow rumped and orange crowned (new for my yard!). I now have had 91 species visit my yard. If you have seen my yard you know that is incredible. Happy Spring birding, Judi Ogle S. of Granada -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Broad-winged-Hawks 2009-2010, Dayton KY, Denver Co.
Yesterday afternoon a Broad-winged Hawk appeared in the Dayton and Kentucky Streets area, near the Highline Canal, for the 4th time in two years. Coincidentally, the first one Frank and I observed here showed up last year on May 8--two days earlier than this year's sighting Last fall one appeared on Oct. 7, and two on Oct. 10. You'll find us in the same place at the same time this October, waiting for more Broad-wingeds! [cobirds] vermillion flycatcher Prowers
Hi all, Me again. While I do not have confirmation our neighbor described what could only be a vermillion flycatcher in her yard. We have had them in our area in years past, including in our yard. [cobirds] Boulder County today
I spent about an hour at Walden Ponds this afternoon in Boulder. I just reviewed some photos I snapped of phalaropes and one of them has some streaking along the flanks that makes me think it might have been a Red-necked. The photos are very poor, but I would appreciate any thoughts: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27729...@n05/ The highlight of my visit was a Red-naped Sapsucker along the western edge of the property. Earlier in the day I found my FOS Macgillivray's Warbler along the Towhee Trail portion of the South Mesa Trail Complex. Two Dusky Flycatchers were also active nearby. [cobirds] Black-throated Green Warbler - Larimer
I was able to refind the Black-throated Green Warbler at Grandview Cemetery (Fort Collins, Larimer County) reported yeserday by Dave Leatherman. I did not hear it sing, but I found it by hearing it call. Shortly after I saw it a runner came by and it flew, I was not able to refind it after that. [cobirds] San Luis Valley Spring Bird Count
We had our best turnout ever with 30 persons participating in this years Valley-wide count to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day. Best part was that 16 of those participating were young persons aged 6 to 16. Great to see them have interest in birds and hope this trend continues Even with all that help, our species count was down, at 138 species. About 152 is our average. We attribute this number to a late cold spring, late migration and also to the horrendous winds we had in the pm. Best birds were Lewis's Woodpecker, Northern Waterthrush, American Bittern, Burrowing Owl and 5 species of plovers...Black-bellied, Semi-palmated, Snowy, Mountain and Killdeer. Sometimes it's what you don't count that deserves attention. In 2002, we counted 24 Ring-necked Pheasants. This year we counted none. The decline in pheasants has been a subject of debate and may be due to changes in agricultural practices, predators, drought, or nesting conditions. [cobirds] Monday WRGB, Tuesday Home
Hi cobirders, Yesterday I went birding near home at the Wheat Ridge Green Belt from the Clear Creek bridge to Bass Lake on the nature trail. After 11AM until 1PM. Nothing unusual when I spotted a male Bullock's Oriole in a bush then a Plumbeous Vireo both of which an Evergreen birder also saw. Being overcast and cool I stayed home today. Best bird was a Green- tailed Towhee in the Choke Cherry by the kitchen window. It quickly hid there. Maybe it will show up tomorrow. I have had one or two other years so it is rather unusual. [cobirds] Scarlet Tanager in Lamar
Cobirders, I found a female Scarlet Tanager at the Lamar Community College Woods (Prowers County) during a brief mid-afternoon visit today. It was in the middle of the grove close to the flooded wetland just northeast of the Tennis Courts. Warblers were slow, but the immature male American Redstart continues to sing in the north end of the grove (if you hear the male Northern Cardinal, you are in the right area). [cobirds] RMBO Banding, Chatfield, 5/11/10
Hi Birders, Got in a decent morning of banding before the cold, wind and rain took over. 18 new birds plus 2 returns from prior years. We particularly enjoyed 3 lovely Violet-green Swallows, 2 males and a female. Breakdown for the day: Dusky Flycatcher 3 Violet-green Swallow 3 Black-capped Chickadee 1 banded 4/26/09 House Wren 3 European Starling 1 Yellow Warbler 3 new, 1 banded 5/14/07 Common Yellowthroat 1 Spotted Towhee 1 White-crowned Sparrow 1 House Finch 2 Several of you have e-mailed me for directions to the banding station: Go to the Audubon Nature Center parking lot. (From C470 Wadsworth Blvd., go south on Wadsworth about 4.4 miles. Turn left on Waterton Road. Immediately turn left into the first parking lot at the Audubon Center sign.) The path to the station starts at the far north end of the parking lot. Walk more or less east, staying to the right of the restrooms and then the pond. When you reach the far east end of the pond where the trail splits, stay on the trail as it goes to the right. The “station” is the 2 picnic tables in a big, open, fenced area (enter through the gate, which is unlocked when the station is open.) We will be closed Wed-Sat. Starting Sun, we will be open every day through Memorial Day, weather permitting, 7 a.m. to about noon, later if lots of birds. The last 2 weeks should be good birds and good weather, so come visit! [cobirds] Baltimore Oriole at Crow Valley - NOT
After processing my photos of the Baltimore Oriole at Crow Valley today, I think it is clear the bird has some Bullock's Oriole in it. The scapulars are bright white and they should be orange in a pure Baltimore. The bird also had a band of pale orange that went up from the side of the neck, behind the all-black head, almost to the crown. At the time I thought this was just incomplete molt, but now wonder if that's yet another clue to mixed lineage. Interesting and beautiful creature, nonetheless. Hi All This morning (Tuesday) I found a Kentucky Warbler in the willow thicket at the base of the dam at DeWeese Res. Coincidently, or maybe not, there was one at this same spot last spring. Also of interest at DeWeese today were a Green Heron and three Long-billed Curlews.
