[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler Pueblo 7/31

2018-07-31 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Since I was over by Parkview Hospital in Pueblo (Pueblo County) this morning, I
decided to quickly go look for the Yellow-throated Warbler that has been
around, since April. I saw one and heard it chipping as well. It was on the
West side of Court Street at 16th street in the only tree there.

[cobirds] Re: Re: Another imminent Colorado birding milestone

2016-06-29 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Of course, the official Colorado State List is still at 499, until the CBRC
actually votes on a record. The observer would have to submit a record to the
CBRC, and then the 7 members have to vote on it, when it is circulated by the
chairmen of the CBRC.
Maybe the AOU will split something, that helps the Colorado State List, at the
same time, they are lumping Redpolls (if they decide to do that).

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 6/1/2016 (Red-eyed Vireo/American Redstart) etc.

2016-06-01 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
Van Truan said "there were two singing Red-eyed Vireos around the Mineral
Palace Park area, of downtown Pueblo, this morning, plus another singing
warbler, that he hadn't seen". I went to Mineral Palace Park around 8:10am. I
was able to find one of the signing Red-eyed Vireos in the park, and I called
Van, to let him know I saw the Red-eyed Vireo, and he said "he thought the
mystery warbler was an American Redstart". He was correct, as while talking to
him on the phone, the American Redstart started singing in the park. Also, a
Western Tanager was present. Van had a singing male Kentucky Warbler in his
yard, nearby Mineral Palace Park on Thursday and Saturday, I went there on
Friday, and couldn't find it or anything else of note. He was able to get a
great recording from his camera on Saturday, to confirm what it was, since all
he saw of it, was some yellow color.
I then decided to try Roselawn Cemetery in Blende, just east of Pueblo. There
were a number birds in there. A singing Swainson's Thrush, several Western
Tanagers, some Chipping Sparrows, singing Warbling Vireo, singing Yellow
Warbler, and House Wrens. I couldn't find anything rare.
I then went out to Huerfano Reservoir, and scoped from Fields Road. There was
a flooded field, with 8 White-faced Ibis. On the lake, there were number of
ducks, grebes, pelicans, and about 10 Black Terns. Perhaps the best birds,
were five Red-necked Phalarope swimming around the lake. There weren't any
other shorebirds, besides Killdeer, that could find. They had a lot of rain in
this area last night, so the lake didn't have much shorebird habitat, except
for the flooded fields.
Today is the first day of the Summer Reporting Period, happy Summer everyone!

[cobirds] Re: Colorado Big Day -- 232

2016-05-24 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds

Congrats to Chris Wood and his team for breaking the Colorado Big Day record by
a lot! Also, thanks to his group for finding birds in Pueblo County on 14 May,
which helped Pueblo County reach 218 species of birds on that day, a record
total number of species for the Annual Pueblo County Spring Count. A big
thanks to all the other birders that we able to help out with this years count,
we had a lot of helpers from out of town, as well, as all the locals. It will
be hard to reach that total again in a single day.
The Pueblo County Fall Count is scheduled for 17 September 2016, I believe.

[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler -- Pueblo County 5/20

2016-05-20 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
A singing male Yellow-throated Warbler was at Rose Pond, at Chico Basin Ranch
(fee area), today. Many photos were taken by several people. Maybe it will
stay for the Pikes Peak Birding Festival trips tomorrow and Sunday. A male
Eastern Bluebird was also seen at Rose Pond and a Red-necked Phalarope was seen
at Headquarters Pond today. All these locations are in Pueblo County.

Hi all:

Golden-winged Warbler was removed from the state's review list in 2002 due to
climbing occurrence rate (and partly to ease of ID). However, it was returned
to the review list not too many years later when the bottom dropped out on
occurrences. Since about four bazillion people saw the recent Golden-winged at
the Stulp residence, the CBRC would greatly appreciate at least one or two
bazillion of those observers to document the occurrence to the CBRC. The
process is easy and mostly painless (http://coloradobirdrecords.org/Reporting/).

[cobirds] Black-throated Gray Warbler -- Pueblo West 5/15

2016-05-15 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
At little bit ago, I was working on yesterday's results for the Pueblo County
Spring Count on my computer, when I heard a warbler chip in the front yard.
Since I had the window open I heard it, and I was surprised to see a male
Black-throated Gray Warbler, a new yard bird for me here in Pueblo West. Van
and I didn't see one of these yesterday in Pueblo County on our Bird Day
either, though I know one was found. It appears Pueblo County broke a record
for a single day count for the Spring Count. Over 200 species were found my
participants of the Pueblo County Spring Count. Good job to all the people who
were able to help. I haven't seen all the lists yet, so I don't know the exact
species total. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

Van Truan and I did an all Pueblo County Big Day yesterday. We ended with 160

Pueblo County yesterday, will end up to around 200 species for the entire
County. Results are coming in and we'll let you know. Thanks to all the
official counters who helped. Our highlights were as follows:Canvasback - 1
female at Lake Minnequa in PuebloHooded Merganser - 1 male at Lake Minnequa in

With all the easy species we missed, including all small owls and nightjars,
maybe the species total for the county yesterday will reach 200. We had a lot
of people helping this year, so we'll see. Thanks to Dave Silverman for
organizing the Pueblo County Spring and Fall Counts for many years. It was fun
to spend 20+ hours birding with uncle Van, which doesn't happen too often.

[cobirds] Lake Holbrook, Otero Co. 4/19 am birding (Hudsonian Godwit, Dunlin, etc.)

2016-04-19 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Stephany McNew and I got to Lake Holbrook, east of Rocky Ford, Otero County,
around 7:25am (on 19 April 2016).
We started in the NW corner of the lake, and couldn't find the Hudsonian
Godwit. We found plenty of other shorebirds and other birds. Then we went to
North East corner, and saw 15 Marbled Godwits, without any small godwit with
them. We checked the pond just east of Holbrook, and then went back to the NE
Corner, looking at the Marbled Godwits again, thinking the Hudsonian isn't
here. We went back to the NW corner, where Dan Stringer and other birder were
looking at the Hudsonian Godwit! Not sure where it was when we were there the
first time, it was right in front on the return visit. Dan described a
shorebird with a black belly, so we thought it must be a Dunlin. Stephany was
able to pick it out of the peep flock (Western, Semipalmated, and Least
Sandpipers all there), plus Semipalmated and Snowy Plovers. A Peregrine Falcon
and a Merlin were at Lake Holbrook this morning too. On the Reservoir, a
breeding plumaged Common Loon, a female Hooded Merganser were present.
A very productive morning, hope the other birders who went looking for these
birds, were able to see them. Our full e-bird list is here from just Lake
Holbrook:http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S29064368

A huge thanks to Stan Oswald for finding the Godwit yesterday, happy it stayed
around, and had plenty of nice shorebird friends this morning.

[cobirds] Caspian Tern -- Pueblo (different location) 4/18

2016-04-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival

I went to Pueblo City Park early this morning, before the rain/snow started,
and saw a good number of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the pine trees, I wasn't
able to pick out anything else. I walked to the River, and I saw a white bird
flying around, and it turned out to be Caspian Tern, flying over the Arkansas
River, below Pueblo City Park. I guess this was the same bird, that I saw
along the River, west of here yesterday (at the Osprey Picnic Area). Today,
the bird seemed to be moving east along the River, though who knows. I walked
toward Olive Marsh, found more Yellow-rumpeds, plus a Lincoln's Sparrow, and
two Song Sparrows, and then the snow/rain began, so headed back to City Park
and to my car. On the way home, the swallow convention was on at
Cottonwood/Snakeskin Picnic Areas, along the River. Also, there was a breeding
plumaged Common Loon in the NE corner of the Reservoir, and two Lesser
Yellowlegs at North Picnic Road.

I was at the Osprey Picnic Area, below Pueblo Reservoir dam this morning

species of swallows were present along the Arkansas River, below Pueblo
Reservoir dam as well. I didn't see any low flying small swifts this morning,
though it a good idea be watching for Vaux's Swifts in the next couple of
weeks. Last year's one was on 28 April. It got pretty windy, so I decided to
come home, though I may get out again later. I saw over 50 species of birds
while roaming around this morning in cool air.

At Lake Holbrook, Otero County, we saw the adult Little Blue Heron, plus
shorebirds: Snowy Plovers, Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, American Avocet,
Black-necked Stilt, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Baird's and Least
Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitcher, and Wilson's Phalarope. Also on the
Reservoir, a Forster's Tern, Bonaparte's Gulls, Clark's and Western Grebes. We
saw a Northern Rough-winged Swallow that caused an e-bird flag. Also, several
Burrowing Owls nearby.
Lake Cheraw, Otero County was very high with water still. Some ducks, nothing
really noteworthy.
We drove north of Cheraw, Otero County, and saw several Wilson's Snipe, and a
Chipping Sparrow.
It was a fun morning of birding on the plains.

I just got a look at a Prothonotary Warbler in Lee Martinez Park. Just north of
the Poudre river trail. Northwest of the Museum of Discovery. Just west of the
trail bridge that is just west of the junction with another trail running on
the west side of the museum. The bird is on the first pond west of this bridge.
Incidentally I saw it on the west side of the pond.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo Co.) morning bird 2/6

2016-02-06 Thread Brandon K. Percival
At least 5 Bald Eagles were around Pueblo Reservoir this morning, during the
Annual Eagle Days. A few other interesting things that I saw, were a Greater
White-fronted Goose off North Picnic Road early this morning with some Canada
Geese. Over at the South Shore Marina this morning, I saw a first year Lesser
Black-backed Gull and a juvenile Thayer's Gull. At the North Shore Marina,
there was a Merlin and Loggerhead Shrike. At West Fishing Road, the adult
Great Black-backed Gull flew by and the Curve-billed Thrasher was running
around the parking lot. Along the road to the North Shore Marina, there was a
Ferruginous Hawk. There was a Northern Shrike along the road below the dam.
Not too much else on the lake, Red-breasted Mergansers, Northern Pintails,
Horned and Western Grebes, Redheads, Lesser and Greater Scaup. Brandon

[cobirds] Greater Roadrunner -- Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 1/22

2016-01-22 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Dan Stringer found a Greater Roadrunner at Sailboard launching area at Pueblo
Reservoir, just before 2pm this afternoon. I think this is the 2nd recent
sighting of a roadrunner in this area. It was off the paved road going down
hill and to the west, before you get to the parking area. Thanks to Dan for
texting me, I was able to get out there quickly, though we couldn't re-find it.
I'll be keeping my eyes open for it though, since it seems like there is one
that likes this area recently.
More road work is going on at the Reservoir. Many of the roads on the North
Side of the Lake, are currently dirt, including the road to the North Shore
Marina. Many bike trails around the north side of the lake are closed, since
they are being re-paved. All of trails below the dam will also be repaved in
the next few months. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Amazing MLK Day around Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 1/18

2016-01-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival
A lot of birders were down here in Pueblo today, since it was a holiday for
some. Here are some highlights.
The totally unexpected bird of the day, was a basic plumage Red Phalarope, that
I spotted, along with Bill Maynard, Richard Bunn and Jan Albright. Also, seen
by Margie Joy and Stephany McNew. Unfortunately, one other Pueblo birder came
to see it, didn't see it. The bird was swimming at the North Shore Marina,
close to shore mostly. An amazing first winter record for Colorado. I will
submit documentation to the Colorado Birds Records Committee. Photos were
taken by three of us.
The other amazing thing for mid-winter, was the Red-necked Grebes! Both
marinas had them, South Shore Marina had one, and North Shore Marina had two!
A good day for gulls at the South Shore Marina tires as well.Glaucous Gull - 2
(1 adult, 1 immature)Great Black-backed Gull (1 adult)Lesser Black-backed Gulls
(both adults and 1st year birds)Thayer's Gull (both adult and
juveniles)California Gull (1 adult at least)along with Ring-billed and a good
number of Herring Gulls
Two Common Loons, Horned, Eared, and Western Grebes continue, as well as
Double-crested Cormorants at both marinas. At least 3 male and 2 female
Red-breasted Mergansers put on a nice show in the cove at the North Shore
Marina. The Northern Mockingbird continues at the Northern Plains Campground.
Below the dam, a nice female Ladder-backed Woodpecker was very cooperative,
plus Black and Say's Phoebes, Greater Scaup, and many other ducks were present.
Also, Yellow-rumped Warbler and Bewick's Wren were seen.
A very fun couple of days around Pueblo! Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. this afternoon 1/12

2016-01-12 Thread Brandon K. Percival

On my way to a basketball game on the other side of Pueblo, I stopped at the
pool below the dam at Pueblo Reservoir, and saw 10-15 White-throated Swifts
flying over the dam, around 2:45pm-3pm. Then over at the South Shore Marina,
lots of gulls, including an adult Glaucous Gull, likely the bird found on 1/3
by Walbek. Also, Lesser Black-backed, Thayer's, and the adult Great
Black-backed Gull. I scoped in the SE corner of the lake, near the dam, and
was surprised to see a Red-necked Grebe!

[cobirds] Colorado CBC Results so far

2016-01-11 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Hi all,
Colorado Christmas Bird Count compilers are currently entering data for their
Christmas Bird Counts to the CBC Website.
http://netapp.audubon.org/CBCObservation/CurrentYear/ResultsByCount.aspx
Click on United States and Click on Colorado and the list of counts will appear.
Currently 24 Colorado CBC Results are in for this 2015-16 season. Please look
at the results, and let me know if you see anything that I need to contact the
compiler about. I'm reviewing all the results currently. A total of 202
species have been reported, though a few of those species, I haven't received
any details about and are Questionable currently, so we aren't quite at 200
species yet. There are also some Questionable Count Week only birds as well.
I will be e-mailing compilers soon, if I need details on anything. Thanks to
the compilers and others who have e-mailed me photos and documentations
already, it helps a lot.
There have been some amazing birds found on this year's Christmas Bird Counts
in Colorado and some high totals for some species that there are usually only a
few or none! Thanks to everyone who were able to participate on Christmas Bird
Counts this season, and past seasons. Compilers have until the end of February
to get their data submitted, though hopefully most will enter data much sooner,
in-case there are problems.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir 1/2

2016-01-02 Thread Brandon K. Percival

The ice-line at West Fishing Road at Pueblo Reservoir, the seven Long-tailed
Ducks were present this morning, along with many Common Goldeneye and other
ducks. One Bonaparte's Gull was sitting on the ice there as well.
Around the North Shore Marina/Northern Plains Campground, there were Canyon
Towhees, and a Townsend's Solitaire. A good number of ducks were in the North
Shore Marina cove. I tried hard, though couldn't find a Greater Scaup with the
many Lessers there. The gulls on the tires at the North Marina, were
Ring-billed (this is a place the adult Mew Gull was on Dec 30th). Scoping east
from the closed campground, south of the North Shore Marina, produced Eared and
Western Grebes, lots of mergansers and goldeneye.
A quick drive around some neighborhoods in Pueblo West, yielded Scaled Quail,
Curve-billed Thrasher, and Lesser Goldfinches.
It is breezy to windy at Pueblo Reservoir this morning, not like yesterday,
when after the fog burned off, it was very calm and easy to see the birds on
the large reservoir. Pueblo Reservoir is not as easy to bird, when it is
windy, since it is so big. Always a good scope is needed out there, to see
things.
Good birding,

details in the C.B.R.C. Report. It was the 499th species to be documented in
Colorado. Hopefully there will be more, since no one else was able to see this
one. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

Subject: [cobirds] Re: Question: What Are Colorado's Top 10 Rare Birds Seen
This Year?

I'll start with these two:
10. Vaux's swift, April 28, 2015, Pueblo Reservoir. There had been several
suggestive reports previously, and the species may even be rare but regular in
very small numbers in Colorado. But this one, found by Brandon Percival, was
photographed, eBirded, and, I assume, submitted to the Colorado Bird Records
Committee. It is the strongest evidence yet for the occurrence in Colorado of
the species.
9. White-throated swifts well into December in the Arkansas River valley.
One-off rarities are cool, but full-on phenomena are, for my money, especially
compelling. As Duane Nelson, Brandon Percival, and others have noted, it will
be fascinating to see how this all plays out--in the months to come, and in the
years ahead.

Alright, 8 more!

Hi all,

Dave Klema and Brent Galliart called me saying they had a mystery shorebird off
the northernmost part of Minooka Park at Wilson Lake (Russell Co.). After they
described it to me, I had a suspicion as to the ID, but hen they showed me the
photos they took, I'm sure they saw a Purple Sandpiper. They saw it at dusk
flying to the north over the lake, so it's hard to say where it might be, but
we will try to relocate it in the morning. I sent a couple of photos to Chuck
that he is going to post on the KOS website. This would be a first state record
for Kansas.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir CBC 19 Dec 2015

2015-12-19 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
Since I need to get up early, I will make this short.
Pueblo Reservoir CBC total is currently at 122 species during today's count.
Two new species were found, 33 WHITE-THROATED SWIFT (1st Colorado CBC record,
staked out birds); and a HOUSE WREN.
Only the 2nd for the Count was a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW. Also, very rare on
the Pueblo Reservoir CBC, were a photographed BLUE-WINGED TEAL (extremely rare
in CO in winter) and a calling flyover COMMON REDPOLL. Two Canyon Wrens were
found, first in 7 or 8 years for the count.
Other things of interest: Snow Geese, "Mexican" Mallard, Greater Scaup,
Barrow's Goldeneye, Common Loon, Clark's Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant,
Bonaparte's,, Mew, Thayer's, Lesser Black-backed, and Great Black-backed Gulls,
Herring x Glaucous-winged Gull hybrid, over 100 White-winged Doves, Western
Screech-Owl, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Black and Say's Phoebes, Chihuahuan
Raven, Pygmy Nuthatch, Winter Wren. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Hermit Thrush,
Northern Mockingbird, White-throated, Lincoln's, Swamp Sparrows, Great-tailed
Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, Cassin's Finch, Lesser Goldfinch.
Low numbers of bluebirds (zero Westerns or Easterns), low numbers of Robins,
Solitaires, Canyon Towhees, and other juniper type birds. Only one Juniper
Titmouse and zero Sage Thrashers.
A very interesting count, thanks to all of our helpers!

[cobirds] Christmas Bird Counts - Eastern White-breasted Nuthatches

2015-12-14 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
Would people going on Colorado CBCs be interested in keeping track of the
sub-species of White-breasted Nuthatches on your Colorado CBCs this year? This
year you can enter Eastern White-breasted Nuthatch and Interior White-breasted
Nuthatch, if you see/hear any on your Christmas Bird Counts (mostly Easterns on
found Eastern Plains counts, though it is possible to see them on the Front
Range too). It might be nice to report the number of Easterns on Colorado CBCs
this year (in-case they get split sometime). The Easterns have pale blue backs
and sound like Red-breasted Nuthatches, and the Interior ones have darker blue
backs. Compilers who wish, can add Eastern and Interior White-breasted
Nuthatches to your list, of course you get both, it only counts as one species.
Also, it looks like you can only enter one number for Snow Goose, so both white
and blue will be just one number. Also, it doesn't appear you have to keep
track of Adult and Immature Bald and Golden Eagles. Not sure if there are any
other changes to how to enter numbers of birds into the CBC Website or not.
Also, a reminder about flickers. In Eastern Colorado, we have a good number of
intergrade flickers, so you can't assume a flicker you are hearing and don't
see is a Red-shafted. So, please report these as Northern Flicker. If you see
you flicker, and can tell it is a Red-shafted, that is good, or an intergrade,
or a Yellow-shafted. Though, heard only flickers should be reported as
Northern Flicker.
Have a good Christmas Bird Count Season everyone. Brandon PercivalColorado CBC

[cobirds] Rock Canyon Picnic Area (Pueblo Co.) closed tomorrow morning (12/5)

2015-12-04 Thread Brandon K. Percival
There is a race going on tomorrow from Pueblo City Park to the Rock Canyon side
of the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam, so that road that goes into
Rock Canyon suppose to be closed until the race is over, which is like 2:30pm.
I know people are coming to Pueblo tomorrow, to bird the Arkansas River, so I
thought I'd post this information. I know people can park at Valco Ponds
parking lot, remember to keep valuables hidden at this parking lot and any
parking lot really around Valco/Rock Canyon area. This is the closest parking
lot to most of the birds anyway.
I got a report from today (4 December) from one birder, that a Rusty Blackbird,
a Winter Wren, a Black Phoebe, two Greater Scaup were seen around Valco Ponds
parking lot and east to Valco Ponds #3. This birder didn't see White-throated
Swifts, Swamp Sparrow, Blue-winged Teal (which are more likely west of Valco
Ponds parking lot), and Mew Gull today. I don't know if anyone else birded the
river today.
I heard that a Greater Roadrunner was seen in the NE Corner of Pueblo Reservoir
this other day.
Good birding,

[cobirds] Previous winter time White-throated Swifts in Colorado

2015-12-03 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Duane Nelson reports White-throated Swifts in Picketwire Canyon (Las Animas and
Otero Counties) on February 28, 2009. These were probably early spring
migrants, though they did make in the "Winter" Season. So, White-throated
Swifts have been seen in Colorado, all 12 months of the year now, except for
January. I'm not sure before this year, they had been seen in November or
December in Colorado. White-throated Swift seem to be more hardy birds, then
we might think. A swift in Colorado in the "winter" is still pretty amazing.
The known winter range in the US, is southern New Mexico; southern Arizona; El
Paso, Texas; and in California. I wonder if they actually winter further
north, then is known.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 12/3 (White-throated Swifts continue)

2015-12-03 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Steve Mlodinow and I counted 17 White-throated Swifts flying above the Arkansas
River, and Valco Ponds #2 and #3 this morning. We were both able to obtain
photos, and I will submit a record to the Colorado Bird Records Committee, this
these birds are first for Colorado during the winter months (Dec-Feb). Thanks
to Margie Joy for finding these birds yesterday. The next question is, how
long will they hang around (I know I'm hoping they will be present on 19
December for a first Pueblo Reservoir CBC record, we'll see)!
Other highlights below Pueblo Reservoir dam, west and east of the Valco Ponds
parking lot:
Rusty Blackbird - 1 Winter Wren - 1Blue-winged Teal - 2Mew Gull - 2Greater
Scaup - 2Swamp Sparrow - 1Mexican Duck - 1
At Pueblo Reservoir:I saw a male Long-tailed Duck and three Common Loons this
morning, off West Fishing Road, the duck flew west into the SWA.
Steve saw five adult Lesser Black-backeds early this morning on the South Shore
Marina tires, I saw one adult later on. The adult Great Black-backed Gull was
around all morning there as well.

Re: [cobirds] very late White-throated Swifts, Pueblo County, Lake Pueblo State Park

2015-12-02 Thread Brandon K. Percival

I took photos of one of like 200 White-throated Swifts on November 1st that
Margie Joy and I saw (which was the latest ones for Colorado I believe at the
time). Last week, another birder in Pueblo saw around six White-throated
Swifts near Pueblo Reservoir (hopefully the e-bird reviewers will accept this
sighting, as it is quite valid). Seems like some of the 200 White-throated
Swifts that were around on 1 November are hanging around. I'll do my best to
get a photo, if I see them around Pueblo this week and after. Maybe I will
find them on the Pueblo Reservoir CBC, since Rock Canyon is usually part of my
area. The Arkansas River in Pueblo always has bugs in the winter, which help a
variety of birds live there, like phoebes, warblers, pipits, etc. all winter
long usually. It has been warm this fall in Pueblo, except recently, though it
is warming up again. Great find Margie!! Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

Margie,
That is crazy. Somebody has to get photos. Only insects I can think of they
might be getting are midges, which would be present anywhere there is unfrozen
water. Desperados is all I can figure. Wonder if any swift is known to have
wintered in the northern part of its range by going into torpor in south-facing
cliffs warmed by the sun? If poorwills are suspected of doing it, maybe
swifts can, too. Great report.

[cobirds] Chestnut-sided Warbler continues in El Paso Co. 11/23

2015-11-23 Thread Brandon K. Percival

The lime-green winter plumage Chestnut-sided Warbler that David Chartier found
on Saturday, was still present at Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso County
this mid-morning, seen by Chris Knight and me. We saw it south of the original
location, it was a little ways south of the Gazebo, on both sides of the trail.
I was able to get photos of it. I think if this bird happens to be documented
in December, it would be the first winter record for Colorado. There is some
very cold air coming later this week, so who knows if it will stay or not,
though hopefully people will look for it Tuesday and after, and if it is found,
submit a record on it to the Colorado Bird Records Committee. This part of
Fountain Creek Regional Park seems to be a winter warbler magnet, with
Black-throated Blue, Pine, Ovenbird, Northern Parula all being found in
December in past years.
A female Greater Scaup and a Snow Goose were at Big Johnson Reservoir, El Paso
as well. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

Black-backed Gull.
I heard from other birders that, Rusty Blackbird, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Spotted Sandpiper, and Blue-winged Teal were all still present along the
Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam today (all of which were first found
yesterday). I didn't hear anything about Black and Say's Phoebes, or the
Winter Wrens today.

[cobirds] Chatfield Reservoir and Chatfield Botanical Gardens, Jeff Co. 11/19

2015-11-19 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Three birders from the south (two from El Paso Co. and me from Pueblo Co.),
came north to walk around the lovely Chatfield Botanical Gardens on this lovely
day, with many other birders. As far as I know, no flycatchers were found. It
is a cool place, which I had not been to before. We saw a nice flock of small
birds: Bushtits, Brown Creepers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, etc. Also, two adult
Bald Eagles flew over.
Later, a quick stop at the Fishing Pier (which I call murrelet point, since
some people lucky people have seen two species of murrelets from here -- I am
not of one of those lucky people unfortunately) at Chatfield Reservoir,
yielded: Red-necked Grebe (one), Greater White-fronted Goose, Bonaparte's
Gulls, American White Pelican, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, etc.
It was nice to see or wave at some of my birding friends from Northern Colorado
today, since I'm always a rare sight north of Monument Hill, I don't see some
of these people very often (unless they come south).
Good birding,

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe -- Pueblo Res., Pueblo Co. 11/12

2015-11-12 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
The Red-necked Grebe I found yesterday, was still present, along with one
Common Loon. Looking west from the parking lot at West Fishing Road around
8:30am this morning (12 November).
This is my 3rd Red-necked Grebe this year at Pueblo Reservoir (one in January,
one in April, and now this one). This species has been become a lot more
regular in Colorado in recent years it seems and Pacific Loons seem to have
dropped off in recent years. I seem to see a lot more Red-necked Grebes in CO,
than Pacific Loons, any more. I'd like to a see a Pacific Loon down here, I'll
keep watching (I seem to have better luck with Red-throated Loons down here,
then Pacifics for whatever reason).

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe -- Pueblo Res. (Pueblo) 11/11

2015-11-11 Thread Brandon K. Percival
On the water out from West Fisherman's Road to the west at Pueblo Reservoir,
Pueblo County, I saw a Red-necked Grebe and three Common Loons this morning (11
Nov). Yesterday (10 Nov), there were seven on Common Loons on Pueblo
Reservoir. Bonaparte's Gulls were scattered around the lake, probably around
20 birds today. Yesterday, I saw three female Red-breasted Merganser on the
Reservoir, I didn't see any today.

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count dates

2015-11-02 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Hi all,
Christmas Bird Count Compilers got an e-mail from National Audubon today, that
their website is open to post dates for Christmas Bird Counts. As usual the
dates are from Monday, 14 Dec to Tuesday, 5 January.
So, the weekends, when many counts will be held this year would be Saturday, 19
December and Sunday, 20 December, Saturday 26 December, and Sunday, 27
December, and Saturday, 2 January 2016 and Sunday, 3 January 2016. Another
popular date would be Friday, 1 January 2016. There are usually over 45
Christmas Bird Counts held in Colorado annually, from all over the state.
I'll try to post dates here, later in November. Compilers if you want people
to help with your count, go ahead and let the word out on cobirds, etc. and
post the date to the CBC Website. If you have issues doing that, let me know,
or the CBC people back east. Some counts in rural areas in the state, don't
have a lot of help, so if you can help with some of these counts, that would be
wonderful.

[cobirds] November White-throated Swifts in Pueblo 11/01

2015-11-01 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Margie Joy has been watching White-throated Swifts on the cliffs above the
Arkansas River since August, west of Swallows, seen from the South Side Pueblo
Reservoir SWA (Pueblo County). She has seen them a few times in mid to late
October, including last week again, so she and I went over there today,
mid-day, and saw them for November. I don't know if there are any or many
sightings of White-throated Swifts in Colorado, during the month of November.
It has been very warm down here, and that might be why they are still around.
Counting them isn't easy, though there were 100-250 of them, at least. Maybe
all the White-throated Swifts in Colorado are congregating, there, until they
are ready to move south for the winter. Pretty cool bird to see in November,
they may well stay until it get really cold. We also saw a Sage Thrasher and a
Prairie Rattlesnake today on the south side SWA. Thanks Margie for finding
these birds. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Re: Cobirds vs Ebird Reporting

2015-10-31 Thread Brandon K. Percival
I think cobirds was first created, to save people from calling the Colorado
Rare Bird Alert all the time, to find out what rare birds were being seen in
Colorado (which is good for those of us, who didn't live in the Denver area,
since it costs money to call the Rare Bird Alert). So, for a while cobirds was
the best way to find out about rare birds people were finding around Colorado.
Later on, everyone got cell phones, so when something crazy was being found,
your phone was ringing, if you are in the loop. Cobirds was still working, as
some people would post from their phones to let the word out about rare birds
quickly. Now, there is e-bird, and rare bird reporting to cobirds has gone
downhill it seems. Luckily, if something crazy is found, the cell phone still
rings usually.
I got a call late on Thursday evening, to look at a e-bird checklist, with
photos of a "Great Crested Flycatcher", of course, I thought before seeing the
photos, a Great Crested Flycatcher in Colorado in late October probably isn't
one. I wasn't surprised to see the photos that showed the bird was a
BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER! If the e-bird checklist was submitted mid-day or
before, even without photos, giving directions to the "Great Crested
Flycatcher", some local Denver birders, would have quickly, gone to look, since
they would know, a Great Crested Flycatcher in Colorado in late October, is
very very unlikely, and some would remember Dave Leatherman found a
Brown-crested Flycatcher in late October a few years ago at Crow Valley
Campground, thinking someone should go look quickly. Anyway, these late
October rare flycatchers don't seem to stick around, so knowing about it right
away, would be better, if anyone else is going to be able to see. When I
birding on Wednesday, I was actually looking for Brown-crested Flycatcher,
Thick-billed Kingbird, and Groove-billed Ani among other things, since this
seems like a good time of the year to be looking for these birds. I didn't
find any of those birds of course, though they were all on my mind. It is good
to know, when certain birds should be here, or not be here.
Congrats on the finders of the Chatfield Brown-crested Flycatcher on Thursday,
and great job on getting photos. The Colorado Birds Records Committee will be
looking forward to the documentation on this sighting. I think there are only
two accepted records for Colorado of this species, as of right now. The Crow
Valley bird and the one from the summer in the San Luis Valley. I think there
are a couple other sightings too. Hopefully this species will show up more,
and maybe stay long enough for all of us to see. Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Caspian Terns at Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo Co.) 10/7

2015-10-07 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Early this morning, Margie Joy found a flock of three Caspian Terns flying west
from Turkey Creek, on the far western side of Pueblo Reservoir. Late morning,
I was able to re-find two of them on an island out from the South Shore Marina.
Margie was also able to see them sitting with gulls on this island. Other
things of note, an American Avocet, Franklin's Gull, a first year Herring Gull,
all near the South Shore Marina. Margie saw a young Bald Eagle and a Greater
Roadrunner in the Turkey Creek area of Pueblo Reservoir, as well.
When the goodies leave Chatfield, please let us know, we'll be watching for
them down here, especially the Ruddy Turnstone.

This morning, I saw a juvenile Jaeger on the water and in the flight, at a

that are now on the CFO Facebook page. I first saw it on the water far out
from Sailboard launching area. It flew and landed in the SE Corner of the

took some far away photos. I lost it as it was flying over Sailboard launching
area. The wind came up, and I never saw it again. Brandon PercivalPueblo West,

I saw my first Cassin's Vireo of the fall this morning, it was at Cottonwood

Orange-crowned Warblers). The parking lot is on the south side of the Arkansas

closet to the river, the other parking lot nearby, is the Snakeskin Picnic Area.
Up in the Wet Mountains, Custer County at 9,050 feet, I saw a female

[cobirds] RFI Carolina Wren Wetmore, Custer Co.

2015-08-23 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Did anyone have any luck re-finding the Carolina Wren in Wetmore, that Alec
Hopping found on Thursday? I drove through there, listening on both Friday
early morning, and Saturday late afternoon, and didn't hear it. Hopefully it
is somewhere around there still.
There was a singing Carolina Wren early last week, in Pueblo too, that I got an
e-mail about. Maybe it was the same bird or maybe there is a mini-invasion
going on.
I still had female/immature Calliope and Rufous Hummingbirds in the Wet
Mountains at 9,050 feet in elevation, Custer County, yesterday morning. Van
Truan was up there Friday night, with his white sheets and black lights, there
were still some Moths around, even though a few nights ago, it got down to 35
degrees.

[cobirds] Documenting Rare Birds in Colorado

2015-06-24 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
Since someone asked how to document rare birds they see in Colorado. Here is
how to do that. Go to the Colorado Birds Records Committee (CBRC) Website
http://coloradobirdrecords.org/ and go to Report a Bird.
The Current State Review can be seen at
http://coloradobirdrecords.org/ReviewList.aspx and you can see what counties
you should document other birds. There is one error on the CBRC Website, Rock
Wren is NOT a state review species. Hope this information helps,

[cobirds] Dickcissels -- Custer Co. 6/19

2015-06-23 Thread Brandon K. Percival
My dad and I drove some of the back roads north of Wetmore, Custer County, on
Friday (19 June), and there were at least three singing Dickcissels in the hay
fields there. Not sure if these fields have been cut by now or not.
Other highlights in the Wet Mountains, s.w. of Pueblo in Custer County this
past weekend, was a Flammulated Owl. Last weekend, both Flammulated and a
Northern Pygmy-Owl were around too. All the hummingbirds I've seen up there
have been Broad-taileds so far. Non bird highlights have been a Black Bear and
Elk.
Good birding,

[cobirds] Pueblo County migrants lingering into summer 6/3

2015-06-03 Thread Brandon K. Percival
I was able to get out early this morning (3 June) for a couple of hours from
630am to 830am and I had a few things of a little interest for early June
(Summer Season).
Pueblo City Park (The May rains have brought the June mosquitoes to
Pueblo):Hammond's Flycatcher - 1 singing in the pinesRed-breasted Nuthatch - 1
(does breed here)Pygmy Nuthatch - 2 (breeding here now, at this low
elevation)Green Heron - 1 (the other one is sitting on a nest that can't be
seen)Mississippi Kite - 1 (sitting on the nest, didn't notice the other
adult)Ring-billed Gull - 1 young birdHairy Woodpecker - 1
Pueblo Nature Center ($4 parking fee, unless you are a Pueblo Nature
Center/Raptor Center member):American Redstart - 1 first spring singing male
(as soon as I got out of the car in the parking lot, I could hear
it)Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1 calling in the riparian cottonwoods (assume this
is a migrant, and not breeding here)Violet-green Swallow - 1 (migrant on the
plains) Brown Thrasher - 1 (probably breed here)Ash-throated Flycatcher - 2
(breed here)thrush sp. - 1 (seen briefly, probably migrant Swainson's Thrush)
I thought I heard another warbler sing one time, (I know what it sounded like),
though since I never heard anything again and didn't see anything, except for
Yellow Warblers, the Redstart, Common Yellowthroats, and Chats, I'll have to
leave it, as who knows.
Pueblo West:White-winged Dove - 1 singing
Also, on 2 June, two Acorn Woodpeckers continue (not surprising) at Pueblo
Mountain Park in Beulah, s.w. of Pueblo, Pueblo County. Several warblers were
present, Yellow-rumped, Virginia's and MacGillivray's all singing.
Good luck to everyone who is going to the CFO Convention, if any rarities are
found at public locations, please let us know.

[cobirds] Bell's Vireo -- Pueblo Co. 5/31 (day 7)

2015-05-31 Thread Brandon K. Percival

The singing Bell's Vireo that I found last Sunday, is still present east of
Valco Ponds #3 (and west of the Valco Bridge) in Pueblo, east of Pueblo
Reservoir dam, along Highway 96. It probably sings all day long, as it was
still singing at 12:45pm today, when it was very warm (they sing all day in the
summer in Kansas too). I know of at least five or six birders that were able
to see/hear it today. I don't know how often I'll be getting over to this
location in June/July (this summer), so if anyone does go there, please let me
know if it is still present or not. It would be nice to know how long it
sticks around.
The location as posted before, is to walk to the last Valco Pond (Valco Pond #3
in my opinion), and listen for it on the south side of the trail, before you
each the Valco Bridge. So, from Valco Ponds parking lot, walk between Valco
Pond #1 (the by Hwy 96) and Valco Pond #2 (the one closer to the River), and
continue past the 3rd pond. It is a closer walk from the Osprey Picnic Area,
though some people don't know that way.
There really weren't any non-breeding land birds in Rock Canyon/Valco Ponds
today, except for a Swainson's Thrush or two. There was a Green Heron, a
Black-crowned Night-Heron, and some flyover White-faced Ibis that were seen
this morning.
Have a good summer everyone!

[cobirds] Bell's Vireo continues in Pueblo Co. 5/27

2015-05-27 Thread Brandon K. Percival

The singing like mad Bell's Vireo I found on Sunday, continues as of this
morning, 27 May. Still in the same location, just east of the 3rd Valco Pond,
and just west of the Valco Bridge. Singing in the olives on the south side of
the trail.
Other birds in the area this morning were: Rose-breasted Grosbeak (female),
American Redstart (singing young male), two Eastern Phoebes, a female Orchard
Oriole, a Plumbeous Vireo, a Olive-sided Flycatcher, a Willow Flycatcher
(singing), Cassin's Kingbirds (singing), among others. Many of these species
don't breed in Rock Canyon/Valco Ponds area, so bird are still migrating. I
think early June will still have migrants in eastern Colorado this year.

[cobirds] Bell's Vireo/Painted Bunting -- Pueblo County 5/24

2015-05-24 Thread Brandon K. Percival

This morning I was surprised to find a singing Bell's Vireo at Valco Ponds SWA
in Pueblo. It was singing continuously for a half a hour, when I was trying to
get photos of it.

There are two ways to get to this bird. You can park at Valco Ponds parking
lot, along Hwy 96, and walk to the last pond (3rd pond), and keep walking east,
until you are almost past the pond. On your right (south) there are lots of
olives, this is where the bird was. If you would rather not park at Valco
Ponds parking lot, the other closest place to park, is the eastern end of the
Osprey Picnic Area on the North side of the river. You'll have to walk east
and then follow the river to the Valco Bridge, cross the bridge to south side
of the river and go west to about where the 3rd Valco Pond appears, and on your
left (south) is where the bird was.
Also, when I was at the east end of the 3rd Valco Pond, when I was walking
around it, a green colored bunting -- Painted Bunting flew out of the willows,
and went to west side of the pond. I didn't go back there, to try to re-find
it. I wasn't able to get photos of this bird, as I mostly only saw it in
flight. This was my 3rd green plumage Painted Bunting this spring in Colorado!
Since these two species breed in other parts of Colorado, these birds are
probably not of interest to most people, except for a few local people. It is
a long walk (a mile at least) from either of the two parking lots,
unfortunately.
The only other thing of note, on my five mile hike this morning, were four
Bonaparte's Gulls on the Fish Hatchery Ponds, west of Valco Ponds parking
lot/east of Snakeskin Picnic Area parking lot.
Good birding,
Brandon Percival

[cobirds] Re: Larimer County big day

2015-05-23 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds

If this is a Big Day that you are submitting to ABA as an official big day, it
would be breaking their rules to read cobirds, look at ebird reports, or get
direct information from people while doing an official ABA big day. I am not
sure any recent big days actually keep to these rules. Since everyone has
their phones on all day, looking for current bird information.

Subject:[cobirds] Larimer County big day

Dear Fellow birders,
As you know, the diversity of species in Colorado right now is very high, and
Larimer County has been particularly blessed with rarities in recent days. With
recent reports of rare warblers, vireos, Flycatcher's, gulls, etc., even more
eyes will be out in Larimer County watching tomorrow.
Serendipitously, a group of 4 of us will be attempting a Larimer Big Day
beginning at midnight tonight. By my count, about 225 species have been seen in
Larimer in just the last few days. If we manage to move quickly enough, and
have some luck with weather, and some cooperation from the birds themselves, we
could reach 200 species. Therefore, if you see a species tomorrow (Sunday) that
is rare enough to get flagged in eBird, we sure would appreciate hearing about
it in real-time. You can post to Cobirds or email me directly.
We are hoping to make history tomorrow. And you can be a part of it. Thanks
for your assistance.

Sorry for the two e-mails about the female Golden-winged Warbler, I didn't
think the first message went through on my phone. SeEtta Moss was also able to
see this bird. I was able to get a photo too. I wonder if this is the same
one Robb Hinds saw on 16 May on the east end of the Canon City Riverwalk (that
I and others couldn't find later that day), or if this a different one. Quite
a few mile distance between the two locations, though both sightings involve a
female.
Other highlights (from Raynolds Ave to Sells Ave) along the Canon City
Riverwalk (11 species of warblers):American Redstart - 1 singing young male
near Sells parking lot of the RiverwalkRed-eyed Vireo - 1 same location as

Phoebe - 2lots of other birds In Florence, I saw a Cattle Egret with cows along
the River Road.

[cobirds] PIRATIC FLYCATCHER in Western Kansas 5/8

2015-05-08 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
There appears to be a PIRATIC FLYCATCHER at Scott Lake State Park, in Western
Kansas. This is about 2.5 hours (137 miles from Lamar), since a lot of birders
will be in Lamar over the weekend, this might be a good detour. The bird was
seen on the north side of the lake, right after the waterfall, and just before
you drive over the creek. It was in some cottonwoods/willows. Photos are on
the ABA Rare Bird Alert facebook page.

[cobirds] Pueblo City Park 5/8

2015-05-08 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Gene R, Phil G, and I birded for a little while in Pueblo City Park, below the
down pour started. Highlights were: Broad-winged Hawk (adult), pair of
Mississippi Kites, Green Heron, and Eastern Kingbird. A few Yellow-rumped
Warblers, were the only warblers we could find. We attempted to bird in Rock
Canyon, though the down pour was too much.

[cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak -- El Paso Co. 5/3

2015-05-03 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Kara Carragher, Bill Maynard, and I birded Hanson Nature Area in Fountain
(which is Area 7 - West in e-bird) early this morning. Most of birding was on
the West side of Fountain Creek. The best bird was a male Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, with two or more male Black-headed Grosbeaks, also seen in this area
was a Dusky Flycatcher, Lazuli Buntings, Yellow, Orange-crowned, and
Yellow-rumped Warblers. There were less birds in this area today, as what Kara
and Dan saw yesterday, in the same area.
Good birding,

[cobirds] VAUX'S SWIFT -- Pueblo County 4/28

2015-04-28 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds

This morning around 7:17am I photographed a swift along the Arkansas River,
below Pueblo Reservoir dam, west of the Cottonwood Picnic Area on the south
side of the River. The bird was flying with swallows (mostly Violet-greens).
I felt like the bird wasn't a Chimney Swift while watching it. I was able to
get four photos. Chris Wood from Cornell (e-bird) has looked at the photos,
and is good with this bird being a VAUX'S SWIFT (which would be Colorado's 1st
State Record)! Photos can be seen on my flickr site.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/ I have no clue, if the bird
is still around, the swallows were getting higher up. Maybe it is worth
looking early tomorrow morning, though I don't know if it is worth coming to
try to find it or not. No other birders were around, when I was seeing it for
a few minutes, before it disappeared.

[cobirds] Northern Parula -- Pueblo 4/24

2015-04-24 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Around 7am, I saw a Northern Parula in the first group of Yellow-rumped
Warblers I looked at, in the eastern part of the Osprey Picnic Area, in Rock
Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo County). I thought, this might be a
start to more rarities, though, I didn't find much else, except for an
Orange-crowned Warbler. Unfortunately, the Parula wasn't re-found later,
though probably still around somewhere. This bird was way high in the trees, I
spotted it, because of its small size, compared with the Yellow-rumped
Warblers. I didn't hear it sing or call. Good luck looking over the
Yellow-rumped Warblers this weekend, I'm sure there will be things with them,
if you are in the right spot at the right time.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds, new arrivals 4/22

2015-04-22 Thread Brandon K. Percival

I saw some nice birds around Pueblo this morning. In the Osprey Picnic Area,
in Rock Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir dam: highlights were: Clay-colored
Sparrow (early date for the Pueblo Bird Checklist Area), Eastern Phoebe
(singing), Black Phoebe (singing), lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Lincoln's
Sparrow, several House Wrens.
At Pueblo Reservoir, the Red-necked Grebe continues off Sailboard launching
area. At North Picnic Road, with a small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers,
there was an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Chipping Sparrow, and Gray-headed Junco.
On the shore in the weeds, one Semipalmated Sandpiper, two Western Sandpipers,
and several Least Sandpipers. Yesterday, this location had a Willet. Seems
like a new shorebird has been here daily of late.
Other birders roaming around this morning at Pueblo Reservoir, saw a Western
Kingbird, a Great and several Snowy Egrets, Peregrine Falcon, White-faced Ibis.

A pretty birdy morning, before the wind came up.

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe & Bullock's Oriole Pueblo 4/19

2015-04-19 Thread Brandon K. Percival
This afternoon, Margie Joy and I saw the brightly colored Red-necked Grebe,
look east from North Picnic Road, near the north shore. I assume this is the
same bird I saw on 12-13 April from Sailboard launching area.
Shorebirds continue to move in and out of the grassy areas at North Picnic Road
at Pueblo Reservoir. In the last few days, the list of species of shorebirds
follow: Marbled Godwit (up to 3), American Avocets, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, Western, Least, and Baird's Sandpipers, Wilson's Snipe, a
Semipalmated Plover (that Pearle and Clif photographed yesterday evening), and
Killdeer. This is a pretty good list for Pueblo Reservoir. Hopefully more
species to come.
While looking for a Cattle Egret (which I couldn't re-find), below Pueblo
Reservoir dam, late this afternoon, a male Bullock's Oriole was in a tree, near
the wooded footbridge, by Snakeskin Picnic Area.

[cobirds] Shorebirds at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 4/17

2015-04-17 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Hi all,
Since shorebirds are hard to find usually at Pueblo Reservoir, I was quite
surprised to see the following this morning: 15 American Avocets, 8 Greater
Yellowlegs, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Least Sandpipers, 1 Baird's Sandpiper, 4
Wilson's Snipe, and Killdeer. All of these except the Avocets were in the
grassy areas of North Picnic Road on the North Side of Pueblo Reservoir (also
here, there were a couple of Savannah Sparrows.) The Avocets were at pool
below the dam. Other things today, were a male Broad-tailed Hummingbird flying
by at South Shore Marina, and an Evening Grosbeak at the South Shore Marina
headquarters building. Below the dam in Rock Canyon, the Ash-throated
Flycatcher that I saw a few days ago, is still around (where they breed
usually), plus House Wrens singing, quite a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, and all
six species of commonly occurring Colorado swallows. Good birding,

[cobirds] Below Two Buttes Res. dam, Baca Co. (no access this spring)

2015-04-15 Thread Brandon K. Percival
This is from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officer in Baca County from the
CFO Facebook, since not everyone sees this page, this probably needs to be
posted on cobirds too:
Just a heads up from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Work to repair flood damage
at the Black Hole portion of Two Buttes State Wildlife Area has begun. The
north side of the Black Hole will be closed to all activity until work has been
completed. Access to the south side is available from the parking lot on the
south side of the dam. Updates will be provided once the area is re-opened.
Likely to be back open in June or after.
This will alter some birding plans for birders heading to SE Colorado this
spring, I'm sure.
