[cobirds] Jefferson County Birding

2012-12-26 Thread Rob Parsons

 Hi all,

I went up to Conifer with my, alas, non-birding family today (Dec. 26th). It
wasn't very birdy at high elevations, with a raven & Mountain Chickadee being
the only species I saw, and a few more "usual suspects" (crows, magpies, a
Red-tailed Hawk and Steller's Jay) lower down. On the way back to Denver,
however, I finagled a couple of all-too-brief visits to Red Rocks Park &
Chatfield Reservoir. It was about 11:00 when we got to Red Rocks and 15 minutes
was about all I managed to get there. I'd had visions of Rosy-Finch flocks
dancing through my head, but nothing of that kind materialized. I think I must
have seen the same two Gray-crowned Rosies Mike Henwood reported earlier, one
each of "Hepburn's" & "interior" types. I assumed I was too late in the
morning, but after Mike's message concluded it simply wasn't meant to be today.
I also had a great look at the Golden-crowned Sparrow. There were quite a lot
of birds, but nothing unusual or unreported recently. Unlike Norm Lewis,
however, I *did* see a White-breasted Nuthatch. It was just after 11:30 when I
got to Chatfield. Mostly scads of white-cheeked geese around the tiny bits of
open water, along with several Bald Eagles on the ice & nearby trees. I was
grateful for their presence as they gave my non-birding companions something to
look at. I did see both recently mentioned grebe species. I was especially
delighted with Red-necked Grebe, my sixth species of grebe for Colorado. I did
wonder if the Western Grebes' patch of open water was truly in Jefferson
County, or whether that's Douglas--everything else I'm comfortable with calling
Jefferson County birding. Any & all opinions welcomed! Cheers, Rob
ParsonsWinnipeg, MBCANADA(but temporarily in unincorporated Arapahoe County for
at least another 12 hours)

Re: [cobirds] Jefferson County

2020-10-20 Thread Nicholas Komar
Overall plumage pattern indicates one of the Myiarchus species of Flycatcher.
Small bill, pale yellow belly, extensive gray chest all point to Ash-throated
Flycatcher, a rarity during fall migration in Jefferson County. There are some
vagrants that are extremely similar and should also be considered, particularly
Nutting’s Flycatcher and Dusky-capped Flycatcher. Vocalizations are unique by
species. A recording would be helpful for identification. To rule out
Nutting’s, a photo of the underside of the tail would be helpful.

[cobirds] Jefferson County Indigo Buntings

2010-08-09 Thread mike
This summer at Bear Creek Lake Park outside of Morrison in Jefferson
County there was an male Indigo Bunting in the area west and south of
Skunk Hollow Picnic area. There was a male indigo/Lazuli cross along
the Cottonwood Trail just west of the lake. Both birds were seen on
numerous occasions during June and July.

For the past several years I have seen an Indigo/Lazuli cross in the
Willow Springs Open Space area, but did not find any this year (made
several attempts in the same vicinity to locate one with no luck)

[cobirds] Jefferson County, Red Rocks

2014-05-13 Thread Cyndy Johnson

I went up to Red Rocks yesterday afternoon.  I didn't know that there was
construction/destruction going on around the Trading Post.

There were the usual Junco's, but they were out front of the Trading Post in
the dirt, so I put half my seed out there.  I went around to the east side and
go in to the back yard.  There were 2 House Finch  either stuck in the empty
feeder, or were keeping warm.  I let them out and filled up the feeder and then
cleared the snow on the west side and dumped another bag out.  There wasn't a
lot of activity on the west side, since it looks like no one had been there for
awhile.  The east side feeder had the Lazuli Bunting's that Joann reported
earlier this week .  The Prairie Falcon was in his usual spot, there were
hundreds of Yellow-rumped W arblers mixed in with Clay-colored/

[cobirds] Jefferson County tid bits

2016-03-28 Thread David Suddjian
On 3/27 a male *Cassin's Finch* was at my feeders at Ken Caryl Valley. This
was only the second in my yard since they were frequent in winter 2014-15.

Today 3/28 a pair of *Eastern Bluebirds* joined a flock of Mountain
Bluebirds in the vale between the Dakota and Lyons hogbacks north of Ken
Caryl Ave. A *Lincoln's Sparrow* was feeding in my front yard. My first *Common
Grackle* of the season showed up in the yard, too. *Say's Phoebes* are
increasing; I've had several in the last 4 days.

[cobirds] Jefferson County, Possible Gyrfalcon near S. Platte Reservoir

2013-12-15 Thread Tom Bunker
At 1:45 today I was finishing up a bike ride around Chatfield Res and was
riding on the bike path just north of C470 along the South Platte river when I
saw a very large falcon flying directly for the South Platte Reservoir to the
West. It flew from East to West, directly across my path and approached within
about 50 yards. It was swiftly going in a beeline for the Reservoir and was
clearly a large Falcon. It had strong rowing wing beats and pointed wing
tips.It was maybe 20 yards off the ground. It's body and underwings
appeared speckled white. It may have been a Gray morph.

This would be a new life bird for me. I hope others are lucky enough to see
it and that someone can confirm the ID.

[cobirds] Jefferson county birders look for hawks at Crown Hill

2015-03-07 Thread 'bomaa...@yahoo.com' via Colorado Birds
Hi CoBirders
I was at Crown Hill Open Space (Jeffco) today around noon and saw an
interesting hawk at the south side parking lot. It had a lighter head with
a dark eyeline, the beak was dark at tip. wings were reddish, but mottled.
Under side was white with red streaks toward rear. legs were feathered to
feet. It sat on poles above the parking lot and the cemetary. Maybe one of
you can spot it and make a better ID than I can. Also two light Red-tailed
Hawks.

[cobirds] Jefferson County - belatedly, Harris' Sparrow at Red Rocks Sunday morning

2010-12-06 Thread modise
Thanks to all the Co-birders out there! My wife and I saw the Harris'
sparrow at about 7:50 a.m. yesterday. This was our 400th North
American
species added to our joint life list (we both have to see it together
the first time to list it)!

If it wasn't for so many people posting these rare birds, and helping
us identify them when we got there, we probably wouldn't have been
able to do it.

We also saw the golden-crowned sparrow, curve-billed thrasher, and a
small flock of bushtits. A song sparrow put in an appearance and was
nice for comparison. There were too many juncos, house sparrows,
house finches, and chickadees (black-capped and mountain) to count.

Our observation point was from the covered deck attached to the
trading post. Thanks, also, to Mike Henwood, who was there before us
and put
seed out for the birds. It's a great morning!

[cobirds] Jefferson County: Chukar with 6-ft tether attached to leg

2012-08-14 Thread Anne Price
Dear COBIRDERS:

The president of the Colorado Hawking Club was sent an e-mail and several
photos yesterday morning of a "hawk" on the deck of a home near the
intersection of Simms and Marlow in Littleton. The bird had a 6 ft long red
tether of some kind attached to at least one leg and the owner of the
property was understandably concerned that the bird had escaped from its
owner.

It turns out the bird is actually an adult chukar; why it has this red
leash/tether is beyond me, but the bird had taken off before anyone from our
Club could assist the owner, and before he could catch it.

Tangling and predation issues aside, the bird may be someone's escaped
backyard "pet". I do have photos if anyone would like to e-mail me
privately. The homeowner where the bird was seen is also willing to be
contacted for more information. In the meantime, if this bird can possibly
be sighted and caught, at least it might be returned to a more suitable
habitat.

Many thanks,

[cobirds] Jefferson County, Williamson's Sapsuckers (male and female) at Genesee Mountain house

2016-02-29 Thread kathanne . lynch
I originally reported a MALE Williamson's Sapsucker on January 27, 2016 at my
home in Genesee at 7500'. This is out-of season, as males start arriving here
March 30 and early April. This male remained from Jan 27-30. It was always in
one Ponderosa Pine at 35', where it drilled 100+ wells. The male appeared
twice (that I saw) in February, on Feb 14 and Feb 22.

A FEMALE WISA appeared on February 24, 2016. It was tapping on a different
Ponderosa Pine thirty feet away at 25' height. It was gone when I returned to
take its photo.

Birders are welcome to my house at 1298 Northridge Court, Golden (7 minutes off
I-70 Lookout Mountain or Genesee Park). But because I saw them only three times
total in February, it's not worth the trip unless you want to see the drill
holes. The male's ponderosa is marked with a yellow ribbon (thirty feet from
my garage door, downhill and next to the driveway.) Call me at 303-968-4750 if
you want to come, and I'll be on the lookout for you.

[cobirds] Jefferson County, RED CROSSBILL and other species at Genesee Mountain Park

2016-06-12 Thread kathanne . lynch

Cobirders: All winter and spring has been an irruptive time for the RED
CROSSBILL at Genesee Park (I-70, Exit 254, south side of highway 2 miles to
Group Picnic area and Flagpole). Today we witnessed one adult male feeding
one young. Listen for them, and perhaps you will see them in flight or
feeding in Ponderosa Pine or other trees here at 8000+ feet. I've seen them
every day this spring that I am in the Park.

[cobirds] Jefferson County - Red Rocks and Lair of the Bear - 4/30/11

2011-04-30 Thread David Alcock
Hi Folks,
Just got out of the chilly breeze this morning.

A stop at RRTP yielded a good list of species, including the Curve-billed
Thrasher (twice) and White-throated Sparrow. A couple birding said they
had had the Harris's Sparrow as well, but I failed to relocate it after my
stop inside for much needed coffee. Very cool that these birds just
continue on and on
Later I headed up the canyon to Lair of the Bear Park, and walked up on a
Broad-winged Hawk perched just off the trail. It flushed and repositioned
twice more along my path, before a Red-tail decided it had had enough and
chased the Broad-winged off to the east.

Pics from the morning will be posted to my blog at some point in the not too
distant future.

Good birding!

[cobirds] Jefferson County: No Roadrunner Sunday 2:20 - 4:45 at Dinosaur Ridge

2012-01-23 Thread Kathanne
There was no Roadrunner Sunday 2:20 - 4:45 at Dinosaur Ridge. Birds
seen were:
5 Townsend's Solitaire
80+ American Robin
17 Dark-eyed Junco: 16 Gray-headed plus 1 Slate-colored
Notes: No Crows, Hawks, Scrub-Jays

"Effort": Five other birders looked for the Roadrunner from 2:20 -
3:20 almost exclusively on the west (Mt. Morrison, CR93) side of the
ridge. I rode my bike and walked from 3:00 - 4:45, focusing on the
ridge beginnning at the west gate, continuing around the hairpin, and
down to 100 yards below the portapotty. I rode down to the east
(Rooney Road) gate twice.

Access: The road is clear of snow and ice. There is some sand on the
road, but not enough to slip on. The sun "set" behind Mt. Morrison at
4:10 pm (which may give you an end time for when the Roadrunner is
likely done feeding and sunning on the west side).

Accessibility: This is a paved road with no auto traffic except for a
shuttle bus. Road is shared by walkers, joggers, off-leash dogs, and
bicyclists. The shuttle bus driven by a naturalist is available hourly
from the east side of the Ridge. You should be able to get off at a
stop near where the Roadrunner has been seen, stay out on the road,
and then get picked up after the bus turns around. Bus is available
for a nominal fee through Friends of Dinosaur Ridge at 16831 W Alameda
Pkwy in Morrison (East side of Ridge, between Rooney Rd and C-470 on
Alameda). Contact them at 303-697-3466 from 11-3 every day or at
http://www.dinoridge.org/ to confirm shuttle schedule.
[Note to CFO: I do not have any financial or personal gain by
mentioning the Friends' bus. I just wanted to post this option for CFO
members who may be physically unable to walk a half mile in Winter
temperatures. Thanks.]

[cobirds] Jefferson County: No Roadrunner Wednesday 1:20 - 5:15 at Dinosaur Ridge

2012-01-25 Thread Kathanne
Jefferson County: No Roadrunner Wednesday 1:20 - 5:15 at Dinosaur
Ridge

There was no Roadrunner Wednesday 1:20 - 5:5 at Dinosaur Ridge.
"Effort": One to nine birders looked for the Roadrunner from 1:20 -
5:15pm. There may have been more birders out looking before 1:20
Wednesday. The afternoon birders spent almost all their time posted on
the west (Mt. Morrison, CR93) side of the ridge, from the hairpin down
to the culvert (as marked by three white stakes). That is the area
where the Roadrunner has been seen the most.

[cobirds] Jefferson County: Roadrunner (Yes!) Thursday 2:55 - 3:50 at Dinosaur Ridge

2012-01-26 Thread Kathanne
The Roadrunner was seen Thursday afternoon (2:55 - 3:50) on the west
(Mt. Morrison, CR93) side of the ridge. The bird was spotted below the
hairpin, and above the three white culvert markers near the fallen
tree.

"Effort": I do not know the number of birders who were present in the
hours before the Roadrunner made itself seen at 2:55. There were 7
birders who saw the bird then. Three birders continued with sightings
until nearly 4 pm, while one birder waited to see if the Roadrunner
would emerge on the east (C-470) side of the Ridge. (The bird was not
seen to emerge.) I did not hear if anyone could tell what the
Roadrunner was eating. Several folks got excellent photos today.

Excellent weather conditions today with temperature in the low 50s,
light winds from the west, and mostly sunny.

[cobirds] Jefferson County: No Greater Roadrunner Sunday 10:10 - 12:20 at Dinosaur Ridge

2012-02-05 Thread Kathanne
Of course we've been wondering if the Greater Roadrunner will make it
through this snowstorm. It has not been spotted yet. I searched this
morning, saw one other birder, and passed the baton to two exceptional
birders. Hopefully more folks will be out this afternoon during the
prime activity time.

Birds seen: 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 9 Western Scrub-Jay, 5 Black-billed
Magpie, 1 Common Raven, 12+ Townsend's Solitaire, 25 American Robin, 6
European Starling

Birds *not* seen but thought about: 0 Greater Roadrunner, 0 Am
Kestrel, 0 Coopers Hawk, 0 Woodpeckers, 0 Am Crow, 9 Nuthatch, 0 Mtn
Chickadee, 0 Bushtit, 0 DE Junco, 0 House Finch

Birding Conditions: The snow on the ground makes an excellent backdrop
to see movement of birds on the ground and in the low brush/juniper.
The snow in the junipers aid in seeing any feeding birds, as the aware
birder will hear snow dropping or see the tree move easier with the
snow in the needles.

Conditions at Dinosaur Ridge: Alameda Road and parking lots are
plowed. Pavement is totally exposed and dry. CR93 parking lot has ice.
I snowshoed up from Red Rocks Gate 2 (one-half mile toward Morrison
from Alameda/CR93 lot). My focus was on the hillside below the Alameda
hairpin, between Alameda/CR93, and above Alameda from the hairpin down
to the Alameda/CR93 lot. These are the places where the bird was
sighted in the seven days prior to the storm. There were slight
tracks in the snow -- almost all of fallen dirt/rock -- although I
tried to imaging bird prints. No distinguishable prints of feeding
activity. Fresh deer droppings in one spot.

History: The snowstorm began Thursday 10:00 pm and lasted through
Saturday 12:00 pm. About six inches of snow are on the hairpin. The
snow depth is generally 9-15 inches in the mountain mahogany and
juniper feeding areas between Alameda and CR93. Weather this morning
was 27-32 degrees with 100% strong sunshine, and 0 wind.

[cobirds] Jefferson County: Roadrunner (Yes!) Monday 3:00 - 3:30 +/- and (Yes!) Tuesday 2:20 -2:35 at Dinosaur Ridge

2012-01-31 Thread Kathanne
Roadrunner (Yes!) Monday 3:00 - 3:30 +/- and (Yes!) Tuesday 2:20
-2:35 (see Mary Keithler's post) at Dinosaur Ridge. This headline
makes it sound easy to see the Roadrunner. As many watchers and
waiters can attest, however, it can take several trips to the locale
and a few hours there to see the bird once. Best times remain between
12:00 and 3:45.

A map with the location sighting is on a link from the CFO homepage
