[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant at Smith SWA

2023-05-04 Thread mvjo...@gmail.com
Action is really picking up in the San Luis Valley.

At Smith Res SWA there was a Neotropic Cormorant, posed on a rock not 100
feet from a much larger Double-crested Cormorant. The Neotropic was about
2/3rds the size of the nearby Double-crested. Bird had the smaller relative
bill and white border on the gape, which was pointed. Tail was relatively
longer than a Double-crested. If approved, it may be the first for the San
Luis Valley.

Another exciting feature was the fact that I saw 5 species of gulls on the
lake today. The Herring Gull that I found a while back is still there,
along with RB, Bonaparte's, Franklin's and a large gull that appears
initially to be a 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Its a great time to be out there enjoying the new greenery and birds
flitting in it!

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Jaeger sp., and others - Barr Lake SP

2020-09-07 Thread Jack Bushong
Hi all,

Barr Lake was phenomenal this morning for migrants. I started off below the
dam, which had a Cassin's Vireo, Nashville Warbler, and early Brown Creeper
among the hordes of Wilson's Warblers. Also present were Hammond's, Dusky,
and Willow Flycatchers, Townsend's Warblers, and throngs of Wilson's
Warblers (I tallied 134 of them today).

I then went to boat launch to scan for gulls and terns. One of the first
birds I laid eyes on was a Neotropic Cormorant. It was between the boat
launch and the dam on a slender island. While looking at the cormorant
through my scope, a juvenile jaeger made several passes above the dam.
Given its robust flight and relatively large appearance, among other
things, I'm thinking Pomarine/Parisitic (leaning the former). Also in the
area was a nice flock of Stilt Sandpipers.

After this, I went to the nature center where the continuing Philadelphia
Vireo was providing great views. It was with a Warbling Vireo in the tall
deciduous trees at the entrance.

I then walked out onto the mudflat to search for Doug Faulkner's
Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and found it with a flock of Killdeer in the SE
corner of the lake. Other birds there included a diverse assortment of
waterfowl and a flock of 17 Red-necked Phalaropes. On the way back to the
parking lot, I saw a Pink-sided Junco among a mixed flock near the banding
station (apparently Colorado's first eBird record this fall).

Overall a great outing, although it was getting warm and smoky toward the
end.

Good Birding,
Jack Bushong,

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant at John Martin Reservoir, Bent County

2013-04-17 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

An adult Neotropic (or is that Olivaceous?) Cormorant was at John Martin
Reservoir. I saw it with a large group of Double-crested Cormorants on
the south side of the reservoir about 1/4 mile west of the dam. The area
has a gravel bar that just into the lake and makes a curl at the tip.
The cormorants swam in the bay just north of this gravel bar. This
particular cormorant was exciting for me, as it was the first adult in
breeding plumage I'd seen in Colorado, complete with noticeable white
plumes on the cheeks. As I was watching it, it flew and landed close to
the dam, and disappeared among the throng of other cormorants.

I have every expectation that this bird could hang around. Patience
might be required, as there may be more Double-crested Cormorants on the
reservoir than one might think possible. I think there are over 1000 on
the reservoir. There are multiple shoreline roosts covered with
cormorants scattered around the lake, which, at 9 percent of capacity
(due to the cataclysmic drought here) is still a very large body of water.

No snow here today, but it is cold and windy.

Respectfully,
Duane Nelson
Las Animas, Bent County, CO

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant, etc., Timnath Reservoir, Larimer County, August 14th

2011-08-14 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, birders.

I visited Timnath Reservoir, Larimer County, early this morning, Sunday, August
14th. The place has fairly low water, very few shorebirds, and gazillions of
non-shorebird aquatic avian species.

Amid the many hundreds of Double-crested Cormorants was an adult Neotropic
Cormorant. The bird was hanging out mainly by itself in a tree at 40.5538
North, 104.9531 West. This is in the northeast arm of the reservoir, with
access from Majestic View Drive, a semi-abandoned, semi-public stretch near the
northeast shore of the reservoir. Re-finding the Neotropic Cormorant will
probably be something of a needle-in-a-haystack effort, what with all the
Double-crested Cormorants out there. Plumage-wise, you're looking for an adult
typical of this time of year, i.e., not as brightly patterned as in spring;
nonetheless, the white brace around the fairly small and yellow-orange gular
patch, especially below the gular patch, is reasonably conspicuous. And, as
always, go for size and structure; compared to a few nearby Double-crested
Cormorants (they came and went), the Neotropic stood out for being long-tailed
and puny overall.

Otherwise, Timnath was loaded with gulls (including a goodly number of
Franklin's); a few Black Terns; many Pied-billed Grebes and an obscenity of
Western Grebes (although only a few Clark's); nearly 50 Snowy Egrets and about
a half dozen Great Egrets; many Redheads, Gadwalls, and Northern Pintails; and
scattered Plegadis ibises, all of which seemed to be pretty straightforward
White-faces. The only shorebirds, other than Killdeer, were Wilson's
Phalaropes. But there's a lot of ground (er, mud and water) out there to cover,
and I didn't hit all of it, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone finds the
shorebirds I couldn't find.

In the landbird department, a few Brewer's Sparrows and only one Chipping
Sparrow were on the move; also Lark Sparrows.

Great place. Very birdy, and I bet it will offer additional delights in the
weeks to come.

Hi all,

Highlights of a great day in the Denver area.

Genesee Park this morning yielded several nice Williamson's Sapsuckers and

Trading Post feeders (Golden-crowned, White-crowned, White-throated and
Harris's) plus the Curve-billed Thrasher. Also a male Broad-tailed
Hummingbird there.

Cherry Creek State Park this afternoon:

Neotropic Cormorant seen from the Marina - but the bird was in the SW corner
of the reservoir with 3 Double-cresteds - thank goodness for the 25-50 zoom
on the Swarovski scope! We could not relocate the bird late afternoon.

RE: [cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant, Cherry Creek SP (4/11/11)

2011-04-12 Thread Wayne Wathen

My wife (Laura) and I arrived at the marina shortly after 10:00 a.m. yesterday
(4/11) and were fortunateenough to have both species of cormorants standing
nearly side-by-side at the marina. They flew off perhaps10 minutes later and
we did some other birding in the park adding for this spring a nice close-up
Swainson'sHawk and male American Goldfinch among other species. We returned to
the marina shortly after noon andit was feeding not to far our from the marina.
 Nice bird.

[cobirds] neotropic cormorant Cherry Crk Res/Arapahoe Cty

2011-04-10 Thread Karl Stecher Jr.
When I arrived at the marina at 1000, no cormorants were there. One could
be seen way out in the water. After nearly half an hour, 5 appeared sitting
on the log just past the end of the marina; one was the neotropic. When
spreading its wings, it looks like a miniature double-c. More cormorants
arrived, and two of us progressed out the dock. Unfortunately, a
non-birding (but nice person) photographer was at the end, and the
cormorants were spooked before we were halfway out...some (of the total of
about 9 by now) headed towards the rock wall to the north, some straight out
just past the long line of pelicans and gulls, and some over toward the
fishing pier. After some scope searching, we noted the neotropic swimming
with three d-cs just past the pelican line.
I left to bird for 45 minutes or so, but rechecked the marina The neo was
there with four d-cs 1215-1230.
One lesser bb gull was on the pelican spit/bar. There were less Franklin's
gulls than yesterday. Horned grebe numbers are way down compared with a
week ago. But western type grebes are numerous in the center of the lake.
A few red-br mergansers, mostly in pairs, are present. Land birding was
limited due to the wind, but western meadowlarks were singing everywhere.
Yesterday afternoon 4/9 I had one greater yellowlegs at the Cottonwood pond
near Belleview/Peoria.

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant Update

2011-04-08 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

The juvenile Neotropic Cormorant found by Connecticut birders Nick Bonomo, Phil
Rusch and Bill Asteriades continues at Cherry Creek Reservoir. The bird
associates with the handful of Double-crested Cormorants hanging around the
marina. At one time the bird flew to the southeast cove and sat up on a log in
the water. It then flew back to the marina, where it was when I left at about
2:30 pm. Photos of this bird can be seen at the link below. Thanks to Nick,

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant and more, Timnath Reservoir, Larimer Co.

2009-08-26 Thread Larry Griffin
COBirders,

Tom, Mary France and I spent a most pleasant morning enjoying several thousand
waterbirds at two locations on the east side of Timnath Reservoir today. There
were at least 3 Black-bellied and several Semipalmated plovers present, along
with a dozen or so Long-billed Dowitchers and many Baird's, Least, Semipalmated
and Stilt Sandpipers and Wilson's Phalaropes, along with a large assortment of
herons, grebes, cormorants and gulls (mostly Franklin's). We couldn't find the
Sabine's or Laughing gulls that had been reported.

We initially looked for the previously reported Neotropic Cormorant in the
roadside pond to the north of the mudflat viewing spot w/o success. But after a
couple of hours we came back and a single suspect cormorant was there. While
returning to the car for our cameras, it flew off to the NW. We then drove into
the newly developing subdivision on the NE side of the reservoir. Following the
existing blacktop to its NW end, we found a pond with a dead tree on its N
side. A cormorant was perched there and it proved to be the Neotropic. As we
were leaving about 12:15pm Mark Peterson arrived and confirmed our ID. The bird
was still in this tree when we left.

The open water and edges of the main reservoir contained many thousand birds. A
steady stream of hundreds of gulls flew in from the east between 11am - 12 noon
and congregated on mud flats way out near the west side of the reservoir,
beyond reasonable scope range. Its so sad this reservoir has such poor access.

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant still present (Larimer)

2009-08-17 Thread Eric DeFonso

Hi all,

After a few earlier unsuccessful attempts I finally managed to see the
Neotropic Cormorant that's been seen lately at Timnath Reservoir in
eastern Larimer County. I was quite lucky this morning, as I happened
upon the small, unvegetated lake right next to the county road where
they were first reported right as a pair of cormorants were flying in.
(This was around 7:10am.) Just as I was hoping, one of them was in
fact the Neotrop, discerned by its notably dark lores, pointed gape,
squatter bill, and diminuitive size as seen in flight when the pair
were flushed from the pond 3 minutes later by a passing truck.

The bird apparently flew back west to the main reservoir, and probably
joined the very large group of about 200 cormorants loafing on the
sandspit way out, viewable only from that area just north of the
unfinished house in that empty subdivision on the east side of the
reservoir.

Lots of birds out at the main viewing area just south of that pond,
including Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Wilson's Snipe, Willet,
Cattle Egret, a juvenile Plegadis ibis, and even some Redhead. No
Blue-footed Boobies though, best as I could tell.

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant at Timnath

2009-08-16 Thread stevenelarson

Hi Folks,

Spent a good part of the afternoon searching for the NECO. I got to the area
about 12:30 and at that time there were very few cormorants on the res and none
on the sand spit on the West side of the lake. About 1:45 cormorants started
streaming into the lake in small groups from the North and East. I was standing
North of the unfinished house on the East side when a line of several birds
flew over me to the lake. There was one much smaller, longer tailed bird which
I suspect was the NECO. When I left at about 2:30 there were probably 200
cormorants on the sand spit.
Good hunting,

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant in Bent County

2009-06-01 Thread Duane Nelson

Cobirders,

At around 9:30 a.m. on 6/1/09, I observed an immature-plumaged Neotropic
Cormorant on the south side of Adobe Creek Reservoir. It was perched on
a low snag in the water at the end of the outlet canal road heading
north from the dam.

I got to observe the small size, slender body, neck and head, and long
tail. The bird was brownish overall, including the throat and chest. The
bird spontaneously flew south from the end of the spit, and south to the
dam, where it briefly swam in the outlet canal. I got to observe it in
flight, neck extended without the crook seen in Double-crested
Cormorants (some are in the area), but the Neotropic Cormorant did not
associate with them. It headed south along the outlet ditch for about
1/2 mile, and may have landed along the flowing outlet canal. I am not
entirely sure if it will return to the reservoir.

To reach this site, drive west on Bent County Road UU from Bent County
Road 10. The dam structure and outlet canal area will be obvious.

While doing a Big Day today Bill Kaempfer, John Vanderpoel, Gary
Matthews and Todd Deininger spotted a Neotropic Cormorant on a sand
spit on the east side of Lower Latham Reservoir. There is a oil
gas road (no trespassing) off Weld Co 47 Rd that leads to the spit.
The bird is visible from 47 Rd. It was in the company of a Double-
crested Cormorant so they were able to compare size in addition to
other field marks.
Bill called this in at 1:30 p.m.
