I do typically ... if I am working on several research projects
concurrently, I can have 6 programs and 20 to 30 windows open for days.
I can handle this on a Linux or XP machine even without resorting to
their optional optional multiple/ virtual desktop features but I just
don't attempt it with the OS X machines available to me because of
Apple's more serially oriented interface.

Re: [CGUYS] BroadBand Speeds

2007-10-24 Thread Eric S. Sande
I believe that T1 lines come standard with a static IP number. As
you state below their up speed is as much as their down speed. (Most
home DSL's and Cable setups have a high down speed, but a much
slower up speed.

Depends on how they are configured. Most DS1s (don't say T1) are
channelized in one way or another. We break the 1.544 bandwidth
down into either 24 56kb (T0) channels or 23 (64 kb D0) channels and
a signalling channel (D channel) in the case of a PRI.

A point to point DS1, sometimes misreferred to as a "wide open T1"
is indeed a symmetrical 1.544 path. But it doesn't magically access
the internet, it has to be hooked up to a provider POP (Point Of Presence)
to do that. Otherwise it's just an alternative means of accessing the PSTN
(Public Switched Telephone Network).

A point to point DS1 can also connect two subscriber locations, etc.

It's just a data pipe.

Also I believe there is no limit placed on a T1 line where limits are
regularly placed and enforced on home DSL/Cable lines (ask the AP who
just caught Comcast limiting bandwidth on customers).

Point to point DS1 usage isn't metered. PSTN access is metered just like
a regular phone line unless there's a specific contract agreement in place.

I also think but am not sure how to state it, but the width of the T1
line is much greater than any home DSL/Cable hook up. (What I am
trying to say is a T1 line can handle a lot more volume than a home
DSL/Cable connection).

No, actually I can download faster with 3 mbps ADSL than I could
over a DS1, if the DSLAM is in good shape and the other network
equipment is nominal. I only get half the upload speed of a DS1, and
probably a reliability tradeoff, but as long as my provider doesn't cap
my transfer volume and data rate I'm doing better with ADSL.

Far better in terms of cost.

A T1, or what is more accurately referred to as a DS1, IS a Digital
Subscriber Line. At 1.544 megabits of bandwidth. If it's configured
with ISDN signalling it's a PRI, Primary Rate Interface. But it's still
generically a "DSL" "line".

The "DSL" that has become common parlance is a digital signalling
protocol that rides a T0 line (your basic home phone line or in some
cases a naked loop). This can be asynchronus or synchronus depending
on the service offering. ADSL or SDSL.

To muddy the waters, ISDN BRI (Basic Rate Interface) is also a
"DSL" configuration. In this case, as with DS1 configurations, there
is no analog functionality.

But as has been mentioned, there is a distance limitation. I can
actually push ISDN BRI past the 18K feet limit, but only with a
powered repeater or an Adtran package. A repeater needs a
power source mid-span, and an Adtran package needs a powered
card at the CO and the destination. Neither of these is cost effective.

And ISDN BRI is only 128 kbps.

A DS1 or a PRI configured DS1 has powered customer equipment
(CSU/DSU) at the terminating end. Reach is improved.

If I have fiber available I essentially have no line losses but I still need
(sometimes expensive) equipment, with power, at the terminating
end.

I can't make consumer "DSL" work reliably past 18K feet from the
CO. Well, I can out to maybe 20K with a clean loop and a lot of
luck. But it won't work well enough to sell.

"DSL", as it is commonly known, is a transitional product.

FiOS is where it's at. The basic strategy is to deliver very high
bandwidth over a next generation network at prices that make cable
look even more expensive than it already is. But talk is cheap,
whiskey costs money. This is an immense capital investment but it
is paying off.

Nothing here reflects anything but my personal opinion and all of
it is public domain.

Re: [CGUYS] BroadBand Speeds

Sometimes. DSL in AZ is worse then the software I use on my sony mp3
player. They have zero support here for anything above 6mbit and Qwest
customer service/support is nonexistent. I had cable for almost five years,
it might have been down twice, several times they increased my speed with no
price increase. They have now gone from 5 to 18 mbit and next year will be
at 25, all at little cost increase to customers. Qwest charges 26 minimum
up to 45 a month for 1.5mbit service. No email, no usenet. I've called
many times to see when they are going to upgrade the lines to some
respectable speed, Qwest reps have told me 'never'. They have no plans to
do anything in AZ. I had faster speeds 7 years ago then i do now. I'm sure
in some places dsl is better, but then again that's not DSL it's fiber,
which is not DSL. But the blanket statement dsl is better then cable is not
so true.

My days go back to punch cards and an IBM 360. I too remember using
dumb terminals to UNIX. I remember early Sun UNIX workstations, Xerox

What the heck has all that to do with Mac OS? I'm sure not leaving Mac

Linux folks have an agenda - We all work together, contribute to and
improve the OS and share it for free with everyone.

The OLTPC group wants everything free, or nearly so.

That old stuff has damn little to do with a commercial operating system.
Feel free to be smug about supporting their agendas. I will continue to
ignore all of that and focus on the O/S that makes me the most
productive when it counts - my own time (I am paid to use WXP in my
job).

Re: [CGUYS] Anecdotal Comparison of Broadband Service Worldwide

2007-10-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have had similar experiences. Red Roof Inns and their ilk provide broadband
free of charge, but upscale places typically charge $9.95 per day, more or
less. I stayed at the Hyatt in downtown Indianapolis in August, and I just got
back from a Marriott in Newton, MA and both charged.

I have an even bigger complaint regarding bargain vs. upscale hotels (somewhat
ot): small places (like the motel I stayed at in Ann Arbor in June) tend to
give you "normal" cable channels, but the "nice" places restrict you to some
subset of what you'd get at home (even with basic cable). Does anybody know
why this is?

As far as other countries are concerned, I stayed in a number of hotels in
Japan this summer. Some were nicer than others, but the only one that charged
for broadband access was a resort near Mt. Fuji. I can recall staying at a
hotel in Nagoya which is used by many locals as a catering hall for weddings
(they take weddings very seriously in Japan); I'd say it was at least the
equivalent of the Marriott in Newton, and no charge for broadband.

As for quality of service, I'm no judge of that. I very seldom notice a slow
connection unless it's egregiously slow.

Multiple buttons makes learning much more difficult.

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-24 Thread Paula Minor

I can't help but say that the worst thing about Macs/OSX is the Dock.
Great operating system otherwise but whenever I am using OS X and
multi-tasking between programs, web pages, files etc, I am spending
a LOT of time struggling with the various windows... trying to
find one I had open before, trying to get others I have, open out
of the way etc.

Hmmm, I also have several programs running at once with multiple
windows but I love using the dock. When I was on Windows, I put a
dock-like software on that so I could have the same function there.
I guess you must have a LOT more running than I do if it's hard to
find them on the dock.

a scroll ball on the top. One could hardly ask for more.

> (It is easier, but that doesn't stop the sense of panic a new
> employee gets when they first confront a one-button mouse.)

I have been training people to use computers for over 20 years. I can
assure you that people do not panic at the sight of a 1-button mouse.
Someone who is new to computers and new to using a mouse does not have
the necessary coordination to operate a multi-button mouse. I have seen
people's rising frustration at trying to operate a 2-button mouse.
Multiple buttons makes learning much more difficult.

Macs now come with multi-button mice, but don't require them. The buttons
can easily be activated as desired and customized for different user
preferences. This flexibility is a good thing.

Windows lets you flip the buttons, but not every application respects the
user's preference. Not so useful.

It may not be as fast, but it will be more steady and reliable in most

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-24 Thread John Duncan Yoyo
When we bought our latest Mac the second thing we did was pick out a
decent two button mouse at the Apple store. The supplied mouse hasn't
even been out of the box.

I haven't had a new Mac in over a decade all though i do have a
friends cast off G3 that still works well enough to surf with and
anything is better than the 6340 we have. I'd almost rather pull out
the MacPlus and fire that up.

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-24 Thread Constance Warner
You can buy Macs with all sorts of bells and whistles nowadays,
including some pretty exotic mice, but employers usually just buy the
basics. Any employee who wants anything fancier must provide their
own--if it's permitted--or do without.

The one-button mouse is only one hurdle a new Mac user has to confront
at work, when they're expected to hit the ground running. Although
modern operating systems do a lot of the same stuff at the basic
level(when you're just coping with word processing, spreadsheets,
e-mail, and the like) there are still differences that you run into
pretty early in the game. My current workplace used to be all-Mac, so
we always made sure that new employees knew that they could ask us any
question at any time.  Only one new-hire didn't adjust quickly;
unfortunately, he was the boss, so we're now a Windows workplace.

A T1 is a designation of speed, among other things.DSL is a generic term
for technology to move digital signal over analog lines. More and more
connections labeled DSL really aren't. I think the fastest DSL can go and
still be technically DSL is 7mbit. Someone on the list might have a better
ideal.

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-24 Thread Constance Warner
Hey, we should ALL be so lucky as to own Microsoft or Apple stock! (Or
any stock, for that matter.)

Microsoft and Apple have advertising budgets that dwarf the GNP of even
a few first-world countries. They don't need to enlist people on lists
like this to do their work for them. In fact, big companies like that
don't like amateurs getting involved in their PR efforts; they like to
control every detail of the message.

Actually, I believe most of us do have a vested interest in one OS or
another, even beyond considerations of security, compatibility (with
software and the nature of the work), and ease of use. Figuring out
computer stuff, and taking computer courses, can be fun, but there's a
limited amount of time and money you can spend on learning basic
operating systems--which you have to know, in today's society, to get
any job above the level of office cleaner. Employers don't provide
training; most employees expect you were born knowing Windows, and often
the Mac people don't provide training because Apple OS is "so much
easier." (It is easier, but that doesn't stop the sense of panic a new
employee gets when they first confront a one-button mouse.) So that's
just one more reason why people can get very partisan about the OS they
use and have already mastered--even if it's a case of "the devil you
know."

Who's paying you to ask this and how much? Whatever it is, I'll double it.

Re: [CGUYS] The Worst Thing about Macs

2007-10-24 Thread Snyder, Mark (NGIT-CA)
Except when the Taskbar loses the application, which it does
occasionally. Clicking for the next row of applications on the task bar
is stupid, too.

OS X 10.5 has a nice looking stacking method in the Dock, which may help
in finding things more quickly. I haven't experienced the problem,
personally.

Thank you,

I can't help but say that the worst thing about Macs/OSX is the Dock.

Great operating system otherwise but whenever I am using OS X and
multi-tasking between programs, web pages, files etc, I am spending a
LOT of time struggling with the various windows... trying to find one I

had open before, trying to get others I have, open out of the way etc.

I know the various techniques & shortcuts that OSX gives you to deal
with these issues but they are clumsy and laborious compared to Windows
Taskbar where all can be seen at a glance and accessed with one click or

keystroke.

Re: [CGUYS] Mac OS UG's

2007-10-24 Thread Snyder, Mark (NGIT-CA)
Apple charges for the major releases, such as 10.4, 10.5. The minor
updates are a free download.

Apple's major OS X major releases have been pretty good since 10.3; most
of the problems have been relatively minor.

Thank you,

Mac 10.5.0 arrives next week. someone is selling it for $106. when
they fix it 6 months from now with 10.5.1, what will be the
charge, another $106, or 170?? or historically when mac went from
10.4.0 to.1.2.3.4, ect, what did they charge?

I sort of recall MS sending out the UG's which they called section 8's
or some such, and did not charge.

from what I read on the mac/apple BB's, the anals are all confident that
10.5 will not run right, but they got to have it.

I would hope some of my 401k funds have both M$ ($30.90) and Apple ($186.16)
stock. So what? My job requires M$, but I have OS X on my computers. Do you
think anyone would be naïve enough to try to sell what ever they own stock in
to this list? This list?

Thank you,

Microsoft vs Apple.

In order to asertain whether a participant in this forums opinion is tainted
by the money motive. I would like to see a disclaimer from
anyone commenting on how good or bad apple or Microsoft are
or are not,

Let us know whether you own Apple or Microsoft
stock or a fund that has MS or Apple stock.

I think that this would be appropriate.

I do not own either Microsoft or Apple stock.
