Re: [CGUYS] DSL Home Wiring
What parts do we need? What's the best method for wiring that doesn't require spending all day in a black widow spider infested crawl space? Two approaches here. One is put a filter at the metwork interface (where the phone line comes into the house) and rig dedicated DSL loops off the unfiltered side. Second approach is to just plug in a filter at each phone outlet and run the phones off the filtered side and DSL off the unfiltered side. The second method is easier but if you know you have a short fix that first. What leads you to believe you have a short, the phones will either not work or be intermittent under that condition... Cable cat won't matter to any appreciable degree. It's just twisted pair copper. You may want to check polarity at your jacks, Radio Shack sells a polarity tester for less than $15. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] DSL Home Wiring
Our house has old phone wiring that has a short circuit somewhere between the box and the outlet for the DSL modem. We've decided to replace the wire with new, and have dedicated lines for the computers. Is it better to attach phone and data lines together at the outside box and run each to phones and computers? Or do I take one line from the box and split it inside with another box? I installed the original inside phone lines and they're fine, but the contractor who build our addition put in the data lines attached at the same post in the outside box, and they're only Cat3. I have Cat6 wire to replace them, but want to do a better job than he did; the building construction is excellent, but the builder hates to do wiring in crawl spaces so he took that unfortunate shortcut. What parts do we need? What's the best method for wiring that doesn't require spending all day in a black widow spider infested crawl space? Re: [CGUYS] Latest Safari version for MacOS v10.3?
I bought my computer in February 2004, which makes it roughly 4.5 years old. I currently run 2 OSes on it, Windows SP2 and Ubuntu 8.04. Since buying the computer, I have never had an OS upgrade for which I needed to pay anything. Compared to the computer I use at work (I am a J2EE developer) it is slower, but still does what I need. The slowest thing I have run on it is SQL Server 2005 which I needed for some side work, but it still ran fast enough to server the need. This computer runs Safari 3.1.1 with no problem. Run a file search for "bookmarks.html". There may be more than one copy on your machine. If so, look at the file size for all of them and pick the largest one (or all that are more than a few KB). On your new machine, back that file up regularly. You can open that file as a regular html file and use it if you like. That item was just too rich for you and you should happily let it go by. If you did not bid the maximum you were willing to pay and therefore lost the auction you should have your head examined. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

So sniping is a way to use inefficiencies in the auction process to sometimes win an auction that otherwise would have been lost. It works by denying others the time to think about raising their bid. Okay. Well explained. I accept that. Thanks. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] Firefox bookmarks etc (XP)
My company laptop was just replaced. The installer did not get any of my Firefox bookmarks or other settings. Where are they stored in XP so I can get them? Re: [CGUYS] iTunes System Requirements
Along this line; just a reminder that you may also maintain separate iTunes libraries. Holding down the Shift key when starting iTunes allows you to point to (or create) another iTunes library. See: http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-201828.html and this part of the URL 07-26-2007, 05:51 PM If you have a recent version of iTunes (7.2 or later?) you can now move your library a whole lot easier. The steps that your friend provided are not necessary; you certainly don't need to delete the songs from your library! Instead, do the following: 1- Make sure that iTunes is organizing your music all within the iTunes Music Folder (check your iTunes preferences to see that "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" are selected. There is no need to change the location of your iTunes Music Folder in preferences. 2- Close iTunes and move the entire iTunes folder to the new location (e.g. move C:\..\My Documents\My Music\iTunes to E:\iTunes). 3- Hold down your shift key while you launch iTunes. You'll be prompted to Choose Library or Create Library. Select Choose Library and navigate to where you moved your iTunes folder and find the "iTunes Library.itl" file. Select that file and iTunes will launch as it always did, but all the files are on the new drive. Note that the iTunes preferences will automatically change the default iTunes Music Folder to where it now resides. In previous versions of iTunes it didn't do that, which required a more complicated method to move your library. mike wrote: Under FILE select ADD FILE or ADD FOLDER and it will scan the folders/files and subdirectories. Right now everything's on "C" by default on my system. Richard P. AFAIK, there is no portable version of itunes so it has to be installed on any system you use it on. You don't need your audio files on the same drive as itunes...I keep mine on a esata drive so i can move it between systems. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

The FIOS installation has a largeish inside the house component that he did first. The backup power supply and the electricity to run the box that converts from fiber to internet/phone/TV. My house wasn't all that well grounded at the time of installation. I know people keep their files on a central NAS drive or home server but I haven't got my PC to recognize my NAS drive all of the time.
